The prolonged legal battle concerning inferior pipes halted the process until the government decided to erect parallel pipes while litigation continued. Pictured is a section of the pipeline near the Nadoni dam. By Linda van der Westhuizen
R482 million for much-needed pipeline Since the announcement early in the new millennium that the Nandoni water scheme near Thohoyandou would bring much-needed relief to thirsty communities by 2003, these communities have been waiting for this to happen. The water scheme was completed by 2005, but no one expected that, eight years later, the communities would still be eagerly awaiting a continuous water supply for domestic use. The Nandoni water scheme was supposed to supply water to the urban areas of Thohoyandou and Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the rural areas from Malamulele and Lambani in the east to Sinthumule and Kutama in the west. The community of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) got so desperate for a regular water supply that they approached the civil rights organization AriForum, who entered into a legal battle to force Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to supply water. The latest highlight is that VDM has announced its opti-
mism about securing funding for part of the pipeline from the Nandoni Dam. “VDM is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department of Water Affairs on the Valdezia-toMowkop water project, which is estimated at R482 million for the 2013/14 financial year,” said VDM spokesperson Moses Shibambu earlier this month. He explained last week that Water Affairs will be handling that part of the project themselves. This is significant in light of the above-mentioned failure to complete the pipeline network from Nandoni to the end users. After the completion of the dam and its water treatment works, work on the pipeline commenced. So-called GRP pipes, or glass-reinforced pipes, were installed. Although they bore the SABS stamp, they could not handle the water pressure and the government sued the company for R500 million. The prolonged legal battle halted the process until the government decided to erect parallel pipes
while litigation continued. In September 2011, Water Affairs said that they were hopeful that residents would be using water from Nandoni by March 2012. That seemed to have been a bit overoptimistic. Nonetheless, according the Department of Water Affairs, the pipeline from Nandoni to Valdezia is being funded and work is underway and could even be completed by the end of 2013. Three contractors are being used and one part of the pipeline is being done by Water Affairs themselves. Funding had been the main stumbling block in the starting of the pipeline from Valdezia to the Mowkop reservoir in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Consequently, the MoU indicating the R482 million for that part of the pipeline is sparking some hope again. “Once the money is there, that part of the project could take about two years,” said Mr Bernie Badenhorst, engineer and planner of water services in Limpopo’s Department of Water Affairs.

Manager of Messina Hospital put on leave The clinical manager of the Messina Hospital, who was forced out by nursing staff, might be soon be managing the affairs of the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. Three weeks ago, disgruntled staff members of the Messina Hospital had had enough and went on strike to have Dr Allick Dube thrown out. He had been the hospital’s clinical manager for the past three years. Hospital staff, patients and local health organisations claim that Dube has been ill-treating patients by allegedly refusing them adequate care and medicine. According to a report that was compiled by Médecins Sans Frontièrs / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and forwarded to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), Dube also refused to provide anti-retrovirals (ARVs) to rape victims. The report was filed against Dube as an official complaint about his conduct as a registered medial practitioner. The Zoutpansberger managed to obtain a copy of this report. In the report, an incident on 9 April this year is mentioned in which Dube allegedly denied treatment to a five-year-old girl who had been raped. This was despite the fact that he had recorded “evidence of rape” on the girl’s examination chart. According to the report, foreign patients have been receiving the poorest treatment of all. Hospital staff echoed the concerns mentioned in MSF’s report. Dube, they claim, has been treating Zimbabwean rape victims and patients from the Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) as if they are a burden on the health-care system. The TTC, which is on the same premises as the Messina Hospital, was established specifically to provide comprehensive medical treatment for victims of sexual and gender-based violence. MSF, which is a non-governmental humanitarian medical organisation, has been providing health care for migrants and refugees in and around Musina since 2007. In July 2011, MSF entered into an agreement with the TTC and provided them with a qualified forensic nurse, as well as a psychosocial counsellor. This agreement worked well until September of last year, when complaints about Dube’s conduct towards victims at the centre started to stream in. Dube allegedly allocated himself as the only physician responsible for sexual assault survivors, despite the fact that he also had duties as the Messina Hospital’s clinical manager. Apart from the complaint filed by MSF, several other official complaints were also filed with the hospital’s chief executive officer, Mr Simon Netshivhambe. Nothing came of these complaints. Nursing staff told the newspaper that there were at least 64 complaints from community members. Dube also fired several doctors without following the proper procedure. The staff claims that he
chased away three Congolese and one Ugandan doctor because their “foreign training is not good enough.” A fifth doctor was allegedly fired because he performed an abortion on a teenage rape victim against the wishes of Dube. After the strike, both Dube and Netshivhambe were placed on leave. Nursing staff demanded that Netshivhambe leave the hospital, with claims that he had appointed two managers for a year in acting positions that did not exist. Last Wednesday (22nd), the newspaper has learned, a stakeholders meeting was held at the Messina Hospital. Even though the newspaper was denied access to the meeting, it was later revealed that two officials from the Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development (DoH) had attended the meeting. They were commissioned by the department to investigate the claims against Dube and Netshivhambe. The DoH was approached for comment regarding this meeting, as well as the outcome of their investigation. Repeated follow-up calls were ignored. On Monday, the provincial spokesperson, Ms Sinenhlanhla Gumede, acknowledged receipt of the newspaper’s enquiry and said that it was receiving attention. The DoH was also asked whether rumours that Dube might be transferred to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital were true. Questions regarding the Messina Hospital’s current staffing crisis were also put to the DoH.

... yet another crash
Stray cattle claim five lives on N1 Stray animals on the region’s roads were once again the cause of a gruesome accident that left five people dead early on Monday morning. The accident happened on the N1 south, about 10km outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt). A truck that was travelling north collided head-on with a sedan, after the truck driver swerved to avoid a herd of stray cattle in the road. The truck literally drove over the sedan. The driver and front passenger in the sedan were decapitated. Two of the three passengers in the rear of the vehicle were crushed, while the third was flung from the wreckage. All five died on impact. After the initial impact, the outof-control truck ploughed through a fence and overturned. Miraculously, the truck driver and his passenger managed to escape with minor injuries. The accident caused the N1 to be closed for almost an hour as clean-up operations ensued, with traffic backing up for several kilometres. One of the cattle also had to be put down as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Following the horror crash, Makhado police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike said that the cattle had no ear tags or branding marks, which made
it difficult for them to determine who the owner of the cattle was. Rumour has it, however, that the cattle belong to a police officer stationed at the Tshilwavhusiku police station, but this could not be confirmed at the time of going to press. Monday’s crash once again highlighted the problem of stray animals on the region’s roads. In one of the worst accidents on the region’s roads, 17 people died in February 2007, after two buses on the Tshikowi/ Rabali road in the Nzhelele area collided head-on. This came after one of the buses swerved to avoid a stray donkey. This life-threatening situation incited the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mr Jacques Smalle, who was on his way to Cape Town, to visit the accident scene. He expressed his sympathy with the family and promised to address the issue of stray animals on national roads. The newspaper was able to determine that, should the police succeed in identifying the owner of the cattle, he or she will be facing charges of culpable homicide. At the time of going to press, only four of the five victims had been iden tified. Police withheld their details until all the next of kin could be notified.

The driver of this bakkie miraculously escaped with his life and walked away from the wreckage of what used to be his Toyota Hilux bakkie. The accident happened about 35km outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on the N1 south on Tuesday evening. According to information provided, the man was driving in a southerly direction when he drove into the back of a small truck carrying a load of scrap metal. The impact of the collision caused the bakkie to overturn and skid across the road. The truck swerved off the road, losing most of its load. Rescue personnel treated the driver of the bakkie on the scene for cuts and bruises that he sustained to his head and face.
Scattered pieces of scrap metal along the N1 south led people first to believe that a taxi accident had occurred. The accident happened close to the Bandelierkop area. A Toyota bakkie travelling in a southerly direction collided with a small truck towing a trailer loaded to the brim with scrap metal and iron of all kinds.

“I’ll break that camera!” The Makhado Police has launched an internal investigation into the conduct of a police officer caught on video while threatening a journalist of the Zoutpansberger. The journalist was trying to photograph police officers making an arrest of two suspected thieves. The incident, which took place a fortnight ago, happened near the corner of Joubert and President Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), almost right in front of the offices of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror. Minutes before the incident, the newspaper was called to witness an apparent act of “mob justice”. As it turned out, officers from the Makhado SAPS appeared to be roughing up two suspected burglars who had allegedly robbed a church in Eltivillas. When a journalist from the newspaper arrived on the scene and tried to take a picture of the two male suspects lying face down on the sidewalk, Warrant officer Edward Ramuthuthu, busy threatening the journalist taking the picture while an officer confronted the journalist, threatening he is pulling along the cuffed suspect by his arm. to break the journalist’s camera. The newspaper opted for the latter option. The local station commander, Col Francois Ramovha, responded in writing this week, confirming an internal investigation into Ramuthuthu’s conduct. “An officer has been assigned to investigate the allegations contained in your letter and should it be that the member was on the wrong side, steps will be taken against him,” reads Ramovha’s response. Makhado police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike reaffirmed the investigation, saying that the police were not afraid to investigate their own and would not hide anything under the table. In the letter to Ramovha, the newspaper also mentioned the fact that this was not the first time that Ramuthuthu’s behaviour had reflected badly on the image of the Makhado SAPS. On 19 April this year, Judge J Makgoba in the North Gauteng High Court labelled Ramuthuthu and a fellow officer, Sgt Bethuel Makananise, as “tough, uncompromising and regrettably arrogant police officers.” This classification was made by the judge in a case where Mrs Issie Combrink of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) claimed damages from the Minister of Safety and Security for wrongful arrest by the police. Ramuthuthu and Makananise arrested Combrink for allegedly being in possession of suspected stolen property in the form of scrap metal. She was later cleared of all charges against her after providing proof of her innocence. Judge Makgoba ordered that the Minister of Safety and Security, Ramuthuthu and Makananise pay Combrink the sum of R60 000 in compensation, as well as all her legal fees. Sadike said that, as soon as the investigation was completed, the newspaper would be informed of its outcome. (To view the video clip of the incident, visit www.zoutnet.co.za)

Awards for Local Media
Limpopo newspapers scoop up top awards Limpopo-based newspapers once again did exceptionally well during the third annual MDDA/ Sanlam Local Media Awards. This prestigious awards ceremony took place at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in Johannesburg on Friday, 24 May, and serves as platform where excellence in grassroots and local media is promoted, with more than 500 entries received in the newspaper categories. The Polokwane Observer once again scooped up the prestigious Hultzer trophy as the best corporate-owned paid-for newspaper with a circulation below 10 000 per week, with the judges remarking that this publication could hold its own against better-resourced publications that enjoy national support. Two other Polokwane publications also received top honours in the newspaper awards category, with The Eye News walking away with the title of best front page in the Community/Grassroots Media category and Titimuleni Nthavela winning the front page category in the Independent Emerging Newspaper (two to five years) category. The Eye News was also runner-up in the Best Newspaper category for Community/ Grassroots Media. Photographer Herman Steyn of The Post (Die Pos) in Bela-Bela also did his province proud when he walked away with the coveted Press Photographer of the Year award. Not only did he take top honours in this category, he also scooped up the best news photographer and best features and portraits photographer categories. The award ceremony coincided with the annual national seminar and annual general meeting (AGM) of the Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ). The seminar was attended by about 90 delegates from across South-Africa, with Mr Mzilikaze wa Afrika and attorney Willem de Klerk as keynote speakers. Wa Afrika is an award-winning investigative
journalist working for the Sunday Times’s investigative unit and is probably best known for his arrest in August 2010 on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice, which escalated the debate in South Africa about media freedom in light of the proposed Media Appeals Tribunal and Protection of Information Act. He was later released and all charges against him dropped with an apology from the Minister of Police. His presentation entitled Journalists under Seige – We are our own worst enemies gave journalists a lot to think about regarding how they report on acts of intimidation against them with reference to the large number of journalists being killed in the line of duty. Wa Afrika mentioned that according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 70 journalists were reported killed around the world during 2012, of which 15 were from Africa. “And the carnage hasn’t stopped as the monotonous killings of our colleagues continue unchallenged ... This year alone (this is the fifth month of year), already 19 journalists were killed and 11 other scribes were also slaughtered and the motive for their deaths is not yet confirmed. Again politicians are suspected to be behind these murders,” Wa Afrika said. De Klerk, who specializes in media law, in turn gave an informative presentation on newspapers that use social media platforms to market their publications and to encourage readers to communicate their thoughts on articles more freely. His focus was on where to draw the line when it comes to possible defamatory comments posted by readers and the legal consequences this holds for publications. The national seminar was followed by the FCJ’s AGM. During the AGM, the news editor of the Zoutpansberger, Andries van Zyl, was elected as national chairperson of the FCJ. He was also re-elected as provincial chairperson of the FCJ for Limpopo.
This year’s annual MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards coincided with the Forum of Community Journalists’ (FCJ) national seminar and annual general meeting. Pictured are the two keynote speakers at the seminar, along with FCJ management committee members and a representative of Sanlam South Africa as FCJ sponsor. From left to right are Messrs Mzilikazi wa Afrika, Ben Burger (outgoing national chairperson of the FCJ), Willem de Klerk, Andries van Zyl (incoming national chairperson of the FCJ) and Ainsley Moos (Sanlam’s Group Head of Communications). During their annual memorial service, members of AFB Makhado honoured air force members who died in service of their country. The memorial parade took place at the base’s memorial monument on Friday (24th). Photo: Cpl Eugene Jansen, AFB Makhado.

Ronnie Rambau, suspended regional magistrate, needs to start afresh with his civil claim against several parties which include the Minister of Police and the National Director of Public Prosecutions. Last week Zoutnet, publishers of the Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpansberger newspapers, successfully applied to the North Gauteng High Court to have the bulk of the claims against them struck off. Rambau, together with his co-accused, attorney Tivoneleni Edmond Lubisi and ex-state prosecutor Estene Willemse, are currently facing corruption charges in the Musina Magistrate’s Court for allegedly trying to influence the outcome of court cases. Rambau was also accused of compiling a “hit list” and conspiring to have several people, which include state prosecutors and policemen, killed. Following the withdrawal of charges in this case, Rambau opted to sue the police and public protector, stating that he was wrongfully arrested and prosecuted. In the papers, the arrest is described as malicious and without reasonable or probable cause. Rambau’s legal team argued that, through these actions, he had been deprived of the preservation of his status as a senior magistrate and suffered physical and psychological trauma whilst in jail. He claims just over R21 million in damages from the parties Almost as an afterthought, Rambau also sued the Zoutpansberger, Limpopo Mirror and Isabel Venter for defamation. Some of the articles focussing on Rambau’s court appearances were written
by Venter. In this case, he demanded R20 million because his reputation was tarnished. Zoutnet’s legal team opted not to file a plea defending them against all Rambau’s allegations. They argued that in the majority of cases the arguments were either so vague or incoherent that it would have been impossible to formulate an answer. Advocate Christiaan Bester, on behalf of Zoutnet, argued that the paragraphs where the “media defendants” are mentioned, should be scrapped as they are either not compliant with the various court rules or simply make no sense. The application for an exception was filed and the case was scheduled to be heard on 13 March this year. On the specific day, Rambau’s legal representative said he was not ready to argue the case. Judge Mmonoa Teffo criticised him and said it was his responsibility to have documents in order and file them timeously. The judge then punished him with a cost order on an attorney-to-client basis. The exception application was then postponed to 22 May. On Tuesday (21st) Zoutnet’s legal team was informed that Rambau will not oppose the application. Rambau’s attorney undertook to remove the paragraphs and re-compile the particulars of the claim. Judge AJ Janse van Nieuwenhuizen presided over the case and made it a ruling of the court. He also ordered Rambau to pay the costs relating to the case to Zoutnet. Rambau’s legal team must now decide whether they want to include the media in their claim once again.

Hier is me. Relay For Life
Nuwe lede word dringend benodig
115 KROGH STREET – LOUIS TRICHARDT TEL: 015 516 6308 – FAX: 015 516 6328 ENQUIRIES: ANDRE – 082 926 7313 IVAN – 079 882 6114
082 789 3927.
Verder het hulle ‘n liedjie geleer, “My body belongs to me”, verversings gekry asook ‘n gebreide handpoppie vir elkeen.
Teachers and parents of the Louis Trichardt Primary School are pleased that there is progress with the repairing of the sidewalk in front of the school, after trenches had been left open since the start of the second term. This caused huge frustration with parents picking up and dropping off their children. The electrical department of the Makhado Municipality has now finally closed the trenches. Pictured are members of the municipality’s technical team preparing to compact the soil and lay the paving.
Laerskool Louis Trichardt bedank me. Me. Diederiks het ook by die siekeboeg gehelp. In haar plek verwelkom die skool me. Lizette Kotzee.

Daar is ongeveer R1 500 ingesamel. Foto verskaf.

to provide proper services to the public. In the meantime, irresponsible conduct of unnecessary sitting at court during work time, which could comprise unauthorized expenditure by the Makhado Municipality, has to be funded by the public through the payment of taxes. “It is of absolute importance to the Soutpansberg Rate Payers Association to determine who organized this sympathy strike as disciplinary steps should be taken against the organizers as well as these employees, in order to stop the re-occurrence of something like this in future,” says Gilfillan.

the municipal workers completed leave forms in order to sit at court as it is surely not part of their duties to sit at court in sympathy with a co-worker who is a complainant during processes where the matter was simply postponed for hearing. If these workers were paid for their services while sitting at court, then we as a ratepayers association would like to know on what basis they were being paid,” asks the SRPA through their chairperson, Ms Inga Gilfillan. The SRPA says that the impression is created that these workers look for every possible opportunity not to work and not

The Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA) noted with grave concern the fact that 56 employees of the Makhado Municipality were at the Magistrate’s Court on 21 May in support of a co-worker who was a complainant in a criminal matter. The co-workers were sitting at court in their Makhado Municipality uniforms or overalls, and Makhado Municipality vehicles were used to transport these people to court, with the vehicles parked in the open space in front of the court. “As a ratepayers association, we would like to know whether

Mnr. Louis Bobodi, die munisipale woordvoerder, het Woensdag

“Mom was the most wonderful mother”
In Memoriam
Foto verskaf.
Well-known Makhado (Louis Trichardt) resident Ms Patricia Mckena Adendorff passed away on 25 May at the age of 83 after a short illness. Pat’s three daughters, Susan, Irene and Eugenie, as well as her only living son, John, have precious memories of their mom. Patricia Adendorff (née Futter) was born on 13 April 1930 in Paul Roux in the Free State and was a staunch Cheetah supporter all through her life. “Mom was cheering the Cheetahs on in their match against the Reds two Saturdays ago from her hospital bed and was very glad when they won,” says Irene. The young Pat had a very sharp mind and excelled at school, not only academically but also on the sports field, participating in tennis, hockey, softball and various other sports. She kept contact with her school friends throughout her life. On 14 April 1956, Pat married Gus Adendorff, the son of one of the oldest pioneering families in the Soutpansberg and he became a renowned nature conservationist in the Kruger National Park. “Mom always said that she had been especially blessed as she had a wonderful life with our father in the Kruger National Park, joining him on patrols and camping out. Having grown up in Kruger, we are a very outdoors family. Mom was such a ‘game for sport’ and even as she got older she joined in all the physical activities. At the age of 79, while on a family holiday with our brother John, who lives and works in Addo Elephant National Park, mom joined John on a sandboard and coasted down a 25-metre sand dune. On top of that, she took to the air with John in a two-seater microlight, showing no fear at all,” says Irene. Their father passed away in 1982. After 26 years of being a housewife, Pat went to work for Kerneels Kern, who mentioned that she was a most remarkable woman, extremely bright with a very positive attitude to life. Pat started working at the age of 53 and only retired at 74 years. Pat lost her eldest son, Michael, in 1987. Pat had a great sense of humour and the family loved sharing jokes and funny incidents. Reading was one of Pat’s favourite pastimes and she had a remarkable general knowledge. She was
creative, an accomplished cook and an excellent needlewoman. She knitted exquisite jerseys for the entire family, including her granddaughters, Jess-Anne and Josie. “Mom was the most wonderful mother that anyone could have been blessed with,” say her children. The late Patricia Adendorff leaves her four children and two grandchildren. Her funeral was conducted by Prof Koos van Rooy in the Agapé Christian Centre on Thursday, 30 May, at 11:00.

Ms Jowien Williams (47) stands near a pool of sewage at the back of her house at Tshikota in Makhado. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho
Sewage still causes big stink in Tshikota Home is the place where the heart is - but what if you have a river of raw sewage that flows past that home? This is the predicament of Ms Jowien Williams who stays with her husband and 10-year-old son in Tshikota. According to Jowien, the problem started some two years ago and each time the municipality had fixed the problem, it would just resurface again. “This is giving me a headache because I have no other place that I can call home,” she says. The problem surfaced once more about a month ago and her neighbours are getting very agitated because the bad smell coming from her home is reaching them. “I keep on going to the municipality’s offices in town to report this case, but they are not coming out to clear off this mess and fix the problem,” she complains. She says that she has had enough of collecting the sewage in buckets and emptying them in the nearby bushes, because each time she does so, the pool of faeces just grows again. One of Williams’s affected neighbours, Ms Takalani Mulovhedzi, says that they can hardly eat any food inside their house as the stench from the sewage is affecting them directly. “Being neighbours to Williams is a pain to us,” she says. “We last saw three men from the municipality who came and looked at the sewage and went away. That was some two months ago.” DA councillor at the Makhado Municipality Mr Itani Sikhwari acknowledged the existence of the problematic sewer at house number 1210 and
indicated that he had been reporting the matter to the municipality’s technical director, Mr Thivhonali Ralulimi, for the past year. “Even the director knows about that family’s bad situation, but nothing is being done,” Sikhwari said. “The open sewage is a health hazard to the affected household and their neighbours.” When contacted for comment, Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi said that they would follow up the problem and address it. “But people should contact us when they want help and not go to newspapers,” Bobodi advised. At present, Tshikota is experiencing major problems with the sewerage system. In an old but still existing case, five families continue to live near the trench that was dug by municipal workers to divert the raw sewage from the mainline to the open bushes. The trench was dug late last year. This trench, which is still open, continues to pose danger to little children who play near it when the grown-ups are not around.

Border situation improves The movement of both human and vehicular traffic at the Beit Bridge border post has improved tremendously on the South African side in the last few days, following a review of operational strategies by the country’s home affairs department. The latest development follows a recent meeting between the Zimbabwean and South African border authorities. The meeting was held last Wednesday, following an outcry over the delays and congestion encountered by travellers on the South African side of the border. In the last two weeks, the situation at the border post had turned chaotic as South African immigration authorities were failing to cope with an increased volume of travellers. Zimbabwean travellers and those from neighbouring countries such as Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia were
affected the worst. Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, told the Zoutpansberger: “We had a very fruitful meeting last Wednesday with our South African counterparts where we sought to address the problem of delays in the movement of traffic between our borders. They indicated to us that they had challenges regarding their staffing issues as some of their officials were attending an in-house training programme. They assured us, however, that they had introduced a number of changes in their operations, so that they are aligned with movement trends at the border posts,” he said. He said that during the meeting it was agreed that both Zimbabwe and South Africa would review their strategies constantly.

“Thanks for helping the samangos”
I
would like to thank the Vhembe community again for being so supportive of my samango monkey conservation efforts. The sticker campaign, sponsored by Leach Printers, was a great success and the revenues and donations will be used to print more stickers and design and print information brochures about samango monkeys. I have seen samango stickers on many vehicles in the area. I am, however, sad to have to inform people that since the sticker campaign started, another two dead samango monkeys were found on the Thohoyandou/Makhado (Louis
Trichardt) road and I do ask people to be alert when driving on this particular road. I would especially like to thank those individuals who informed me immediately about monkeys killed on the road. If you have samango monkeys in your area or on your property, if you see a samango crossing a road or if you find a dead samango, please do contact me at birthe.linden@univen.co.za, birthelinden@gmx.de or by phone on 071 105 8117. You can also send me a ‘please call me’ SMS and I will contact you. - Birthe Linden

Belastingbetalersvereniging werk voluit vir ‘n beter toekoms vir streek
D
The Way, the Truth and the Life
Open your mouth. - James 3:1-12
W
e have all been to the dentist, and we all know his first words after greeting is: open your mouth. According to Scripture there is a time to open your mouth and a time to keep it shut. If you are going to say something kind, then open your mouth and say it. If you want to praise God, then open your mouth and praise Him. But if you are going to say something hurtful, then keep your mouth shut. Before you say something about another person, ask yourself three questions: Is it true, is it kind, and is it necessary? “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may import grace to the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29) On Judgement Day each of us will have to give an account to Christ the Judge concerning the words we have spoken. Jesus said: “But I say to you for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt 12:36&37.) How we need to place a guard upon our mouths. - 079 5168303

Now the time to enter Kremetart Time is running out for those who have not yet entered for the region’s sporting event of the year. Entries for this year’s PPC Kremetart Cycling Race will close on 2 June. On Tuesday, the total number of entries was already at 1 083. This year, entries will be limited to 1 500 cyclists. The Kremetart will take place from 7 to 9 June in and around Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The Kremetart mountain bike race will also be hosted as a cross-country Olympic event and will also be a Limpopo qualifying event. Online registration is open and cyclists who wish to enter are encouraged to do so soon before all the slots are snatched up. Cyclists can log on to www.kremetartcy-
cling.co.za to register. On Saturday, 8 June, the younger cyclists can look forward to the KFC 10km fun ride, with just over R5 000 in prize money. Cyclists between the ages of 10 and 13 can enter. Entries for the fun ride will open on Friday, 7 June, from 12:00 until 20:00 at the tourism information centre. Cyclists can still enter up until 15 minutes before the race, which will start at 08:45. Medals will be given to all finishers. This year, 10% of the entry fees will also be donated to the Rhino Peace Foundation to help in the fight against rhino poaching. After the fun ride, youngsters between the ages of two and 11 will have a chance
to participate. Here, R2 200 in prize money can be won. The race will start at 13:00 on Saturday and parents can also enter their children at the information centre. With this record-breaking Kremetart, accommodation for visitors is already fully booked and becoming a serious headache for the organizers. They have therefore appealed to anyone who may have accommodation available, such as a room to rent, to phone Pétria Marais at 015 516 5771. She will be responsible for coordinating all the accommodation available at private homes. For further information, Renda can be contacted during office hours at 015 516 1328/9, or people can log on to www. kremetartcycling.co.za.
