The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday that they were shocked and saddened by the recent farm attacks and murders in the province. Mr Jacques Smalle was referring to the vicious attack on the 80-year-old Ms Joekie Nortjé and her 62-year-old son Johan on their farm Nooitgedacht just outside Louis Trichardt. Both were seriously injured during the attack. “We wish them both a speedy recovery as they deal with the physical and emotional wounds,” said provincial leader of the DA Mr Jacques Smalle in a press release shortly after the attack. He visited them in the private hospital in Louis Trichardt. Smalle said that enough was enough. “Over this weekend, another man and his elderly mother were attacked in George’s Valley. During this attack, the man was allegedly burnt with an iron. The cruelty of these attacks leaves one shocked to the core. This is the second incident that has been reported in George’s Valley within a week as a farm worker was also shot on a farm,” said Smalle. Smalle’s response comes just a week after the senseless and brutal murder of well-known local artist and anti-farm murder activist Ms Annette Kennealy, who was found murdered on her farm last Tuesday. Kennealy was a personal friend of Smalle’s. “Too many lives have been lost unnecessarily. Enough innocent farmers and farmworkers have been tortured. Enough is enough. We cannot allow this brutality to continue in South Africa,” said Smalle in his statement. Smalle said that they had on numerous occasions called for specialised rural safety units to be established. “Our pleas have been ignored and have fallen on deaf ears by an uncaring government. The safety of our farmers and farmworkers across the country has been compromised. We cannot and will not sit by while nothing is done to protect our farmers and farmworkers,” said Smalle. In the meantime, the Makhado police have confirmed that the man arrested in connection with
the brutal murder of the 51-year-old Kennealy was indeed her employee, the 40-year-old Kenny Ramatshimbila. Provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe also confirmed that Ramatshimbila had appeared in court in Louis Trichardt last Thursday on a charge of murder and house robbery. He was denied bail and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 1 July for a bail application and further police investigations. Kennealy’s body was discovered in her farmhouse on the farm Welgevonden last Tuesday morning after family members failed to reach her by phone and a neighbour went to check up on her. Her body was found in a pool of blood and had severe head injuries, presumably caused by a bloodied hammer found close to her body. She also appeared to have been strangled. Following the discovery of her body, an extensive search began for her killer(s). This led police to Ramatshimbila’s house in Mauluma village in the Nzhelele area where he was arrested last Tuesday evening, hours after Kennealy’s body was discovered.

Johan is reeds by sy seun, ook Johan, in Pretoria.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has declared the end of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, as no new cases of FMD have been detected in the declared disease-management area since February, and more than three incubation periods have lapsed with no new cases being observed. This is according to a joint statement issued by the DAFF and the livestock industry. “The battle is over, but the war continues,” reads the statement. South Africa experienced an FMD outbreak in the high-surveillance area of the FMD-free zone in Limpopo’s Vhembe District on 7 January this year and, as a result, lost its World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recognised FMD-free zone without vaccination status. The DAFF, however, stated that intensive surveillance had demonstrated that the virus was no longer circulating. “However, control measures remain in place in the area. The farming community and public are urged to remain vigilant,” says the DAFF in the statement. Tuesday’s announcement follows a ministerial visit to the Vhembe District in April. DAFF minister Mr Senzeni Zokwana led a high-profile delegation to the affected communities to express their heartfelt appreciation to the farmers and all other parties that worked with the DAFF to contain the outbreak and resolve the situation. The statement goes on to state that the DAFF successfully prepared and submitted a dossier to the OIE, applying for a containment zone. This application does not form part of the normal OIE processes for zoning and thus will not be considered by a formal sitting of the OIE’s scientific commission but will rather be considered through an electronic round-robin process. “The DAFF is hopeful for a positive outcome of its application in the near future,” reads the statement. In the meantime, China has lifted its ban on wool. “The Department has successfully negotiated market access for safe commodities to most of the trading countries. The most recent success was China lifting their ban on wool imports from South Africa. Negotiations are still underway for beef exports to China, and the DAFF is in the process of confirming dates for the next inspection visit by the Chinese veterinary authority,” reads the statement. In conclusion, the DAFF urged people not rest but remain vigilant and continuously seek to improve biosecurity procedures and measures to protect animals and people against the spreading of disease.

Municipality’s actions show a lack of respect By Andries van Zyl
The Makhado municipal cemetery in Louis Trichardt is nothing more than a complete embarrassment to the town and its people. This has become the view of many. The cemetery has deteriorated into a state of almost complete disrepair. Not only is it overgrown, it has also become a haven for muggers and thieves literally leaving no gravestone unturned to make a quick buck. Gravestones are stolen for cash while even the plastics flowers on graves keep on disappearing. None of this, however, comes close to the nightmare that a family and their friends had to endure on 14 May. Mr Dries Vermeulen from Tzaneen said that they were in Louis Trichardt on that day to pay their final respects to his mother. What greeted them at the The Makhado Municipality dug such a massively wide grave that the undertakers had to construct gravesite was shocking. “On our arrival at the gravesite we noted a special platform (in the foreground) from which to lower the coffin. whatsoever in the outlining of graves. It seems like they just dig graves without having any concern about the families who need to go and lay their relatives to rest there,” said Vermeulen. Vermeulen said he and his family felt dehumanized by the municipality’s actions while battling with the loss of two loved ones. “We feel there is no more value in laying someone to rest,” said Vermeulen. But the family had to endure even more trauma. The ground needed to fill up the grave again on the day of the funeral had, for some reason, been dumped more than 10 meters away from the grave. Vermeulen said they ended up having to borrow shovels from a nearby local business to try and fill up the massive grave. “We walked up and down, shovel by shovel, and eventually missed most of the family who were gathering at the church. At one point, the church phoned us and said that they needed to close,” said Vermeulen. That was still not the end of their ordeal… Two days after his mother’s
funeral, Vermeulen said, they returned to the cemetery to make sure the municipality had completely covered the grave. “I found that cattle had walked all over her grave, which is totally unacceptable and disgraceful,” said Vermeulen. In response to Vermeulen’s ordeal, Makhado municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi said that he agreed that what had transpired at the graveyard showed a total lack of respect. He confirmed that the municipality themselves are the ones who dig the graves and that this function is performed by the cemetery caretaker. “The caretaker is to be reprimanded and given further training,” said Bobodi. He added that, for the umpteenth time, all their equipment at the cemetery was out or order, resulting in a backlog of maintenance. Despite the ordeal suffered at the hands of the Makhado Municipality, Vermeulen has high regard for AVBOB. “On behalf of myself and the family, we praise AVBOB for their amazing service and respect showed to us during this difficult time,” said Vermeulen.

It is your duty to report any form of child abuse Social Welfare
In an era where children are subjected to extreme acts of violence, National Child Protection week is being celebrated from 26 May until 2 June. “We would like to make the public aware of when a child is in need of care and protection, and what type of services can be rendered by social-work professionals,” said Ms Friede Meissenheimer, senior social worker at the Louis Trichardt SAVF (South African Women’s Federation). The SAVF’s theme for this year is “It takes a community to nurture and protect a child every day”. According to Friede, social workers who work in a Child Protection Office mainly work with the Children’s Act, Act 38 of 2005. In terms of Section SAVF senior social worker in Louis Trichardt 111 of this Act, certain people are legally obliged Ms Friede Meissenheimer. example any educational or medical professionals. “However, any person who suspects that a child might be in need of care and protection may report such suspicions to a social worker or the police,” said Friede. In terms of Section 54 of the Sexual Offences Act (Act 32 of 2007), ANY person of the public who is aware of a child or disabled person being sexually abused is legally obliged to report it to the police. “Failing to do so is a crime and could lead to a fine or imprisonment,” warned Friede. But what constitutes a child in need? In terms of Section 150 of the Children’s Act, a child might be in need of care and protection if the child has been abandoned or orphaned; displays behaviour that cannot be controlled by a parent or caregiver; lives on the street or begs for a living, is addicted to a dependence-producing substance and is without any support to obtain treatment for such dependency; has been exploited or lives in circumstances that might expose the child to exploitation; lives in or is exposed to circumstances that may seriously harm that child’s physical, mental or social well-being; may be at risk if returned to the care of a parent or caregiver of the child as reason exists to believe that he or she will live in or be exposed to circumstances that may seriously harm the physical, mental or social well-being of the child; is in a state of physical or mental neglect; and is being maltreated, abused or deliberately neglected or degraded by a parent, caregiver, and a person who has parental rights and responsibilities or a family member or by a person under whose control the child is. Regarding the above, Friede said numerous signs to look out for existed. In case of physical abuse, the child may: have bruises, welts, cuts, burns, bite marks, fractures and other indicators of physical abuse that do not correlate with the explanation offered; display the presence of several injuries and repeated injuries over a period of time; and have bilateral injuries, injuries at various stages of healing, absence of injuries or differences in the location of the injury you would associate with the explanation of the injury. Sign of emotional abuse may include: low self-esteem; impaired or inadequate mental or emotional development; may behave like an adult or display regression behaviour (inappropriate for age); have a fear of failure, setting overly high
standards for the self; be reluctant to play; have mood swings, aggression, depression, overly controlled or dramatic expression of emotion; and overly compliant behaviour, too well-mannered, excessive concern about neatness and cleanliness. In cases of sexual abuse, the child may have psychosomatic complaints, such as abdominal pains, headache and nausea; any physical complaints, such as difficulty to walk or sit, unusual or excessive itching in the genital or anal area due to infection(s), have sexually transmitted disease(s), be pregnant and have injuries to the mouth or the genital or anal areas such as bruising, swelling, sores, infection) and have had an abortion(s). Some children will also often cry or display undue anxiousness. An older child may display low self-esteem, a lack of self-confidence, or may even display a lack of self-care. They may also experience sleep disturbances and/or nightmares and have a fear of persons or places (a sudden fear of a family member, bathroom or closet). As for neglect, this may manifest as unattended medical, dental or educational needs (e.g. no immunisation and no medical check-ups when required); poor hygiene, consistent hunger and associated nutritional deficiencies; and persistent conditions (e.g. scabies, head lice, diaper rash, skin disorders) that remain untreated. So how can the SAVF help? Friede said they rendered numerous services, including prevention campaigns to make people aware of the social problems and prevent such problems in the first place. “We look at early intervention. This is when a family has become involved with social services, but the service rendered does not include Children’s Court at this stage,” said Friede. On the flipside of the coin is statutory intervention. This is where the Children’s Court is involved, but it does not necessarily mean that the children will be removed from the family. “Other services may include temporary safe care or foster care. It can also include orders for mediation, skills development such as parental guidance, or rehabilitation,” said Friede. Lastly, the SAVF offers reunification and after-care services. This entails foster-care supervision and ensuring that children are reunited with their parents. “If you have suspicions that a child is being abused or neglected, please phone us,” said Friede. The office of the SAVF can be contacted at Tel 015 516 3841 or 071 628 7949.
Vereniging (v. 46): Dit is “eendragtig”.

Sy was betrokke by tientalle kursusse waardeur ‘n paar duisend mense genoemde opleiding ontvang het. (A Luta Continua - Die Stryd Duur Voort). Goeie groete.

PP’s Venda Pension Fund report going to court By Anton van Zyl
The Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, has indicated that her office will oppose the application of the Minister of Finance to have the report on the Venda Pension Fund saga reviewed and set aside. She appointed Boqwana Burns Inc

The fact that the Public Protector (PP) will be opposing the minister’s application, is quite significant, said Mr Hennie Erwee, a Musina based attorney earlier this week. Top provincial trophies for LTT Cricket Club Cricket News
Players from the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club were awarded several of the top trophies during the Limpopo Impala Cricket prize-giving function last Friday. The Louis Trichardt XI side won the province’s promotional league the past season. The trophy for the best batsman of this league went to Dewald Joubert of Louis Trichardt, while his team-mate, Dirk van den Berg, won the trophy for best bowler of the league. Dirk was awarded two trophies, also receiving the award as best bowler of the provincial T20
league. Another Louis Trichardt player, Leon Olwage, won the award as best batsman of the T20 league. Louis Trichardt showed the past season that it can field a very competitive side. In the T20 league the team won the Vhembe District round-robin competition. The team came up against Seshego, the winners of the Capricorn District, in the semi-finals of the competition. Seshego won this encounter and then continued to win the final match. Another player from Louis Trichardt, Gerhardus Fourie, won the award as the province’s U/17 Player of the Year.
These roads will be closed on 8 June Cycling
