Mysterious fire destroys headman’s house Louis Trichardt JRS to close its doors? The recent burning of a headman’s ten-roomed house at Lwamondo-Habelemu outside Thohoyandou has tongues waging and the community in shock. Headman Nelson Malima Belemu (60), who stays with his mother, Vhakoma Vho Munzhedzi Tshakona Belemu, was asleep on Saturday at around 21:00 when his house was allegedly torched. Hundreds of thousands of rands’ worth of damage was caused during the fire that gutted the house with all its contents. The headman himself sustained serious burn wounds and is recuperating at the local hospital. The exact cause of the fire is
not known yet, but residents are adamant that it was arson and this has made the community furious. Mr Joseph Ramagoma (46), who is the headman’s neighbour, said they were watching the soapie Muvhango when they heard noises outside. “On investigating, we saw huge flames emanating from the headman’s house, but before we could help, the whole house was already engulfed in flames and we could not save anything.” Ramagoma further indicated that they had found the injured headman and his mother, who had fainted, outside. “We had to use a wheelbarrow to carry the injured headman to the ambulance, which was a kilometer away from the house.
It’s painful that they did not attempt to come to the house and the headman spent a long time without help. At the same time we are also putting the blame on our municipality, which has not tarred the road like we have asked for a long time. It is not easy to come up here,” he said. He said they had no doubts that a flammable liquid had been used to burn the house. “There is no electricity here and the headman confirmed he had lit a candle but had made sure it was off before he slept. The speed at which the fire spread also makes us very suspicious,” said Ramagoma. Vuwani police spokesperson Const Thomas Thovhakale said no case had been opened as no foul play was suspected.
The Jesuit Refugee Service’s branch in Louis Trichardt will in all likelihood close its doors at the end of the month. This will be a devastating blow to the hundreds of people who are reliant on this organisation for assistance. The Jesuit Refugee Service, more commonly known as JRS, has been active in the region for quite some time and handles some 4 000 cases per year. The staff members focus their efforts on the needs of the migrants crossing the borders of the country. Many of these people are undocumented and in most cases they flee from their own countries because of political unrest or simply because of the dire socio-economic circumstances there. The JRS project director stationed in Louis Trichardt, Ms Bertha Chiguvare, confirmed this week that they will in all likelihood have to close their doors. This is mostly due to the withdrawal of the project’s major funders. The main sponsor, a German-based NGO, opted to move the funds to another country. For Bertha and her team this is a big setback, but more so for the projects that are currently being run by JRS. “The past year we looked after 181 children,” she explained. The children are
placed in shelters in, among other places, Tshikota. JRS supports them with food parcels and also enrols them in training programmes, so as to equip them for the future. One of the main projects of JRS focuses on people who are HIV positive. Currently, more than 150 such patients are being cared for. JRS has the services of a qualified and experienced social worker as well as two auxiliary social workers. They investigate each case to see how JRS can assist. In the past couple of years, JRS has probably done more than any other local organisation to cater for the unfortunate ones who end up sleeping in the streets. When a person arrives in the area and has no place to go to, they often end up knocking on JRS’s doors for help. Each case is investigated and the people are documented. JRS works very closely with law-enforcement authorities and with other social service institutions to ensure that the limited available resources are maximised. Internationally, the Jesuit Refugee Service is very active and operates in 10 regions spanning more than 50 countries. The organisation has strong ties with the Catholic Church and was
founded by one of its priests, Father Pedro Arrupe, in Cambodia in November 1980. The goal of JRS is “to work in areas where there is a real and present need among forcibly displaced people and where other agencies are not present.” JRS places a lot of emphasis on training as part of the assistance it offers, and in Louis Trichardt, several institutions were roped in to help cater for this need. The training projects included sewing classes, hairdressing courses and even computer proficiency training. Some of the courses were also conducted in outlying areas such as Magau and Tshiozwi, where a large number of the displaced people stay. As far as the future is concerned, Bertha and her team of eight dedicated staff members are uncertain about the direction that it will go. They will officially close at the end of December, but will wrap up the various projects during January and February next year. At the time of our going to press there were talks of a meeting between different stakeholders to discuss future options. The stakeholders included other service organisations that try and cater for the needy in the region as well as government departments.

Revenge attacks are on the increase Fed-up by the ever escalating crime, angry residents of Thohoyandou and the surrounding villages are now resorting to instant justice where suspected criminals are killed or, if they are lucky, they are badly beaten and escape with their lives. The rule of law seems to have lost momentum as communities feel betrayed by handing over criminals to police and seeing them roaming the streets the following day. In recent times, mob killings have been reported at Mbilwi, Makhuvha and Hatshifura. As if that were not enough, Thohoyandou and Tshisahulu this week experienced incidents of revenge attacks on alleged criminals. In the first instance, a notorious thug who is alleged to have instilled fear wherever he went and has been fingered as being behind a spate of criminal activities at Tshisahulu and Itsani was beaten up and hacked and left for dead at Tshisahulu. The man from Itsani is said to have given revellers at drinking holes around Itsani and Tshisahulu a tough time, robbing them at will. Before he was attacked by unknown assailants in the late hours of last Thursday evening, he is said to have robbed an Indian shopkeeper in Tshisahulu and shot a member of the community. A group of unknown revenge seekers are alleged to have gone hunting for him in the village and finally caught up with him at one of the taverns at Tshisahulu. They are alleged to have hacked him with pangas and hit him with bricks and left him for dead and
bleeding heavily on the road. He was taken to hospital in a very serious condition. In a second incident in Thohoyandou, another man who allegedly prowls on victims in broad daylight, picked the wrong target on Monday when he was beaten and faked death for the mob to leave him. The man, who is feared by all in Thohoyandou, got more than he bargained for when early morning shoppers taught him a lesson he will not forget for the rest of his life. After allegedly trying to rob and injuring a hawker at a busy street in town, it is said that he had boasted that no one could touch him and that he would kill anyone who dared come near him. It is suspected that he had robbed a hawker of his stock the previous day and that nothing was done to help the hawker. Eyewitnesses say the incident happened at around 08: 30 on Monday morning when the hawker was busy serving a customer. “I was not far from where it happened when I saw this man trying to search the hawker. The hawker tried to defend himself and that was when the robber used a brick to hit him on the head. The hawker was seriously injured and was taken to hospital,” said a man who did not want to be identified. He further indicated that the man stood at the road shouting at the top of his voice, saying that no one could touch him and he would kill anyone who tried to catch him. “This man is feared here in town and people were just standing there, fearing to catch
him. But they soon gathered courage and surrounded him. That was when all hell broke loose. He was attacked by all, using an assortment of weapons, including bricks and a sjambok. He ran to a nearby shop and the owners had to close it in fear of the angry shoppers,” he said. The timely arrival of the police saved him from certain death. The police struggled to keep order, with angry shoppers threatening to finish him off. The police summoned an ambulance and he was taken away to hospital, but angry residents also tried to block the way for the ambulance. Residents sighed with relief. “We know this man; he robs people in broad daylight. But with him having been disciplined today, we will spend our monies without fear and we hope this sends a message out there to all that crime will not be tolerated in Thohoyandou,” said a man at the scene. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe said two attempted murder cases had been opened in connection with the incident at Tshisahulu, while another one was opened regarding the incident at Thohoyandou. She said two men aged 20 and 30 years were under police guard at the local hospital. They will appear in court as soon as they are discharged from the hospital. Tshiovhe further warned residents not to take the law into their own hands but to work with the police in apprehending criminals.
GEPF attempts to assist state pensioners The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) national outreach campaign at the Christ Worship House Church at Shayandima a fortnight ago, was a roaring success. Hundreds of serving and former government employees from all corners of the province gathered at the church hall to receive first-hand information and status updates regarding their pensions. Established in May 1996 through the amalgamation of a number of pension funds serving government employees, GEPF is the largest pension fund in Africa, with over 1.2 million contributing members and about 400 000 pension recipients. The fund is also responsible for the more than R1.4-trillion of assets
under management. Ms Kedibone Madiehe, general manager of government pension administration, said that the roadshow was more educational, and members had the chance to engage with the many consultants about funeral benefits and many other events. “For those who would like to make enquiries, we only need copies of ID, persal numbers or a driver’s licence for us to access their information,” she said. She further indicated that the fund intended to address the delays in processing claims being experienced by members when they exited the fund. “The campaign also affords members an opportunity to update their personal information and to have
their queries attended to on site.” The updated and correct personal information makes it easier for members to receive their payments on time when they exit the fund. Failure to adhere to these simple basic requirements could lead to hardships, such as loss of income while waiting for payments to be processed,” she said. Mr Moses Mudau, who attended the road show, said that it had been informative. “I went on pension some two years ago, but felt that I did not get the correct payments. After stating my case, I found that everything had been done according to the book. I am quite impressed and feel that this should be done on a regular basis for the benefit of those who did not attend this one,” he said.

“This award serves to affirm my stability as a writer who has just started writing in my mother tongue after endless discouragements from older writers.” A talented author and Limpopo Mirror freelancer, Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho, has just returned from Cape Town, where he won the prize as overall winner in the Tshivenda category during the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards last Thursday. “At some stage I was made to believe that no young people like me could produce literary works in Tshivenda, because it is not easy to do,” he lamented. “I received discouragement such as only the old could write: youths lacked the knowledge and writing tools to produce passable, publishable writings. And I say that has been proved wrong.” The title that won this young writer an award is Mveledzo na Zwigevhenga, which is a children's story. Pearson published the book, which will be available in bookshops soon. The award also came with a cash prize. “The book tells the story of a nineyear-old Mveledzo who uses her mobile phone to snap a short video clip of gun-wielding criminals at a local supermarket,” he said. “The robbers felt that they had a legitimate right to rob Ahmed of his hard-earned money and items, because he was a foreigner who operated a successful shop in their village.” Mukwevho said that he failed to grasp the logic behind the actions of people who attacked foreigners who

Lightning strikes eight cows to death The strange weather the past two weeks caused havoc and, apart from the hail damage, eight cows died after being struck by lightning on Saturday (21st) morning. The residents of Tshaulu village were busy with their morning chores, while others were preparing to go to either Sibasa or Thohoyandou for shopping, when a dark cloud appeared up in the sky just over the village at around 08:30. Soon afterwards, lightning and thunder shook the village. “People came to inform me that my eight cows were lying dead under the mufula tree,” said a cattle owner, Vho-Sarah Kwinda (71). “When I reached the spot, I found my eight cows lying dead on the ground. I
couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing.” Kwinda explained that one of the eight cows had just given birth to a calf the day before, and that the other seven cows were also heavily pregnant. “It will not be wrong to say that I have lost 13 cows,” she said, shaking her head. “I can’t believe that this thing has happened to my cows. They are all dead.” Kwinda said that she had been practising subsistence cattle farming for the past 15 years. Some of her children were put through school using the money derived from this type of farming. “I am a widow who relies on cattle farming,” she said. “How am I going to take my grandchildren to school now that this evil lightning has killed my cows? Where
will I get money to buy food?” A herdman, Vho-Wilson Madoba (68), said that he was among the first people to get to the place where the lightning had struck the cows. “I found a day-old calf sucking on its dead mother’s teats,” he said. A 62-year-old resident, VhoEnoch Makungo, said that he had lived in Tshaulu for many years, but he had never seen an incident of this nature. “Hezwi ri hafha ro tshuwa! (We are all shocked!),” he said. “One cannot easily accept the consequences of the lightning as if it were something small. We have been praying for rain to wet our land, so that we can plough our fields and cultivate crops. We all want rain, but not the kind of rain that destroys our livestock.”

“Continue with the good work” - Mmbi Chief Nditsheni Victor Mmbi of Maniini has urged members of the Muledane Reformed Church to continue the good work they are doing in the community. Mmbi was guest of honour during the church’s second group birthday celebrations, where members of the church born during specific months jointly celebrate their birthdays. Church elder Alex Mbulaheni Netho-

Here we come together and say a big thank you to God. There are many challenges in one’s life and our still being safe means a lot, as it is by the grace of God.” Chief Mmbi urged the youth not to forget to put God first in

The skyrocketing crime in our communities is a source of much concern, since we find that mostly youths are involved. There is also a high level of immorality in villages, and the church has to lead the way in speaking against this.” The youngest of those who celebrated their birthdays was two, while the eldest was 71 years old.

Soccer playing granny (66) laid to rest
The Mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi, cuts the ribbon during the official opening of the 500-metre tarred road and traffic circle near Sibasa Spar on Thursday. The road and traffic circle are part of the R35 million Sibasa Taxi and Bus Rank, which is scheduled to open very soon.
Granny Tshinakaho Kharidzha Mutavhatsindi Denga (66) was known as a dedicated Christian and a member of the local Ngwekhulu Uniting Reformed Church outside Vuwani. She was also known as “Belani” in soccer circles and was also described as an all-rounder who could take any position in her gogo’s club, Faranani FC. When she passed on, church members in church regalia and her team, relatives and friends came in their numbers to bid her farewell. A soccer display was also done at her funeral service, held in tents at her home on Saturday morning. She was later
buried at Hamasia, a neighbouring village. Speaking at the funeral, team captain Catherine Mutavhatsindi said that Tshinakaho was a well-disciplined player. “We enjoyed her company a lot. She was our shining star and we will miss her a lot. Her position will be hard to to fill,” she said. The coach of the team, Nkhume Sithagu, said the granny was a pillar of strength to all of them. “We are very sad and we will always miss her sense of humour. She always gave us courage and we relied on her for advice,” she said. Family member Rufus Kharidzha said her death had leftt a void in the family.
“She was a unifier in the family and was very passionate about issues of royalty, having been of royal blood herself. She also played a role in the establishment of the family bank, which is among the few in the country. Her contribution in the community and family will forever be cherished,” he said. Tshinakaho was born at Hamasia Kurhuleni Mission in 1936. She did her primary school education at Kurhuleni. Food parcels for victims of storms About 500 victims of the recent storms in Vhembe received food parcels, but more than 2 000 victims are still without food and a place of shelter. Heavy rains and storms occurred a fortnight ago and damaged numerous houses and blew off many roofs. The chairperson of Venda Muslim, Mr Adam Patel, said that they donated groceries to the value of R50 000 and presented these to the storm victims.
He added that, according to Islamic culture, they must provide for needy communities. Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe said he was thankful for donors such as Venda Muslim and Spar for the generous donations of maize meal, rice, cooking oil and other items. Matibe and the Makhado mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, and the Mutale mayor, Cllr Sarah Rambuda, presented parcels to the affected families during an
event at the Muledane Disaster Centre in Thohoyandou on Thursday. A victim of the storms, the unemployed Ms Portia Vele of Muledane Block J, said life was hard “without a roof over your head and food. I stay with my two children, and after the roof of my house was blown off, our mealie meal became wet due to the rain and left me without any food for my children. I am thankful for the donation,” said Vele.

“Stand united and fight abuse” - King King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said that all senior traditional leaders around Venda had decided to speak out against “a society that continues to prey on the vulnerability of women and the innocence of children.” In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, he urged community members to unite and fight against abuse in all its forms. “As we do our best to fight these challenges, we call upon everyone to support the campaign as we raise awareness and demonstrate support for our women and children. Over the years, we have had to contend with the fact that incidents of abuse continue to occur, in spite of the existence of a progressive constitutional and legislative framework that protects women while promoting human rights.” He said culture and tradition played a major role in the exploitation of women and children and that culture and tradition “are still used to justify the physical and emotional abuse of women and children.” He added that traditional and religious leaders could make a difference in this regard “by instilling change in people’s perceptions about customs and family values.” He emphasised that good moral values were keys in the fight against violence and abuse of women and children. “By embarking on this campaign today, all of us are clearly sending a message that women and children are worthy human beings who deserve to be valued and respected as equal members of society.”

The theme was I am a man of substance. The commissioner on gender equality in Limpopo, Mr Mbuyiselo Botha, told the gathering that men should be part of the solution in the society. He also explained the importance of a healthy lifestyle and responsibility in a relationship as part of combatting HIV/Aids and related diseases.
Mr Phala Sekgweng, provincial chairperson of the men’s forum in the Department of Agriculture, encouraged men to take care for their families, support them and not to harm them. “We found it good for men alone to discuss issues affecting them and their families, and we hope seminars such as these will help to solve the problem of woman and child abuse.”

Women’s League takes a stand against abuse The unresolved cases of woman and child abuse in the Vhembe region have prompted the ANC Women’s League to display their dissatisfaction during a march to launch the 16 Days of activism against woman and child abuse.
They started their march at the gate of Khoroni Hotel in Thohoyandou last Tuesday and marched to the ANC regional offices in Thohoyandou P West. “The ANC being the leader of the society, must be at the forefront of promoting the progamme. We are
worried that several cases of woman and child abuse in Vhembe are still unresolved,” said Ms Florence Radzilani, former MEC for safety and security and chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in Vhembe. She added that the region had started with a programme of action and that they wanted to visit the Thohoyandou and Malamulele Magistrate’s Courts on 30 November to investigate these unresolved cases. Mr Lutanyani Denge, member of the regional executive committee of the ANC, who received the programme of action submitted by the ANC Women’s League, said that their party, through the Freedom Charter, Gateway Primary’s top achievers in Grade 6. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The musical journey has not been easy for a talented house music artist who started off by recording himself using “radio tape” for enjoyment. “It was around 2004 when I first recorded my demo at Willy’s Music Production in Brakpan,” he recalls. “Listening to that demo often afforded me a critical ear, so that I was able to to hear my flops and seek ways to develop my music as an up-coming singer. However, I did notice some promising quality as a singer in the material contained on that demo. So I gained some courage to face more studios with my work and I finally approached Masana Records in Soweto.” Black Poison arrived at Masana Records, but he had no money to record his music. So it took him about three years to record and finish the songs that were finally compiled together on his debut album, Zwi Do Luga. “Zwi Do Luga talks about hope and courage even when things don’t seem to favour us,” he says. “It teaches us never to give up in life because life can only be too short if we allow it to be too short with our laziness and failure to focus on the positive side of life.”
Black Poison felt that he needed to establish himself fully as a singer with a strong voice in society. “I joined Loudly Comix Records where I completed an album called Mbilu Yanga, which was released some two months ago,” he said. “I hope this album will pave my way up there in the music industry.” “People think house music is only for the youth for partying and dancing, so my music is for all generations,” he said. “It has all you want: a message, and you can dance to it too.” A resident of Khakhanwa village, Black Poison has always been in love with music and it was the reason why he was moved by the sounds of the legendary reggae artist Colbert Mukwevho from an early age. “I like Cobert Mukwevho for the good messages in his songs,” he said. “As a reggae artist, he has transcended the ordinary and used his creative skills to give us a combination of sound and lyrics which speak directly to our hearts.” For more information, call 061 323 0386/ 073 209 8912. Black Poison is also on Facebook as Fhatuwani Black Poison Mbau. His e-mail address is fhatuwanimbau@gmail.com .
TONNY PREACHES FORGIVENESS AND UNITY
In the music industry, the reggae genre, too, seems to be gaining more momentum with new names who continue to release studio-based albums. One such new name is Tonny Mukosi, who had recorded his debut album, I need to find my new home, in 2012. Now, he has just released his second album. The offering is aptly titled Let It Go. “I grew up with my uncle who loved reggae music so much and he didn’t want me to borrow music from other people, but to play what was there,” he said. “So I started loving reggae music from an early age. I was touched by the strong bass, percussion drums and rhythm in reggae, to the extent that I told myself that I wanted to sing reggae too.” He revealed that he had dreamed of composing music that had a similar quality to that of Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Eric Donaldson. “I like how all those musicians do their best with their voices and guitars,” he said. “Reggae music is a movement; it’s not static – it keeps
on moving, just like a stream of cool water in all seasons.” He told Limpopo Mirror that he sang in Tshivenda and English. His latest album has good songs such as Respect, Dani Ritshine, I don’t care, Ni muthu de?, Ri khou di nwela and Khari shume. “On this album, I worked with Shufflers Ragimana, Elekanyani Tshabuse, Abby Chinada, and Rendy Mario Mukwevho at Chinada Records. This album advocates forgiveness, respect for other people and unity,” he said. “With respect and unity, people are able to achieve more.” Mukosi became popular with two songs from his first album in 2012. The songs were Days, Mercy, and Nne ndi funa honoyu. “Music is part of my life and it has taught me that, without music, the world will just appear dark as if the sun has refused to rise,” he said. He is on Facebook as Tonny Mukosi, and he can be contacted on 0712687760. His music can still be downloaded at artistecard/mukosie. Mukosi hails from Makhuvha village.

Four Macuveze orphans get food and clothes at last Four Mozambican orphans displayed bright smiles when they received poverty-relief food parcels and clothes from the Red Cross at Mahatlane village a fortnight ago. The representatives from Red Cross Limpopo, Messrs Frans Senoa and Paol Mailula, presented them with the clothes and food. The children have been relying on the mercy of their neighbours for food, clothes and parental guidance since both their
parents had passed away. Their father, Mr Louis Macuveze, died in 2008, and their mother, Ms Anabela Shilenge, passed away in 2013. This left their children, Palmira (16), Nkhensani (13), Endlani (4) and Julius (2), with no one to care for them. None of them gets a Sassa grant, since they have no birth certificates. Even though Palmira was born in Mozambique, her parents came to South Africa when she was barely two. All these orphans know
nothing about Mozambique. They all live at their deceased parents’ house at Mahatlane village near Masakona. “Our parents left us with good shelter, but we are all still minors,” said Palmira. “We need birth certificates, so that we can access social grants and have food like other children who live with their parents.” They sometimes go to bed hungry. “Life is tough for us; it’s really hard,” Palmira said. “But we are happy that the Red Cross has provided us with some food.” Ms Agnes Shirindza, a neighbour, had been trying to assist the orphans with clothes and food ever since the death of their parents. “What I give them is not enough now,” she said. “I am unemployed too, and I was relying on my husband, who is no longer working either. We are now happy that the Red Cross has given them food.” Sanco’s Sammy Mabasa said that the struggle continued for the Macuveze siblings since all of them needed to get birth certificates, so that they could get access to social grants. “I have visited many government offices, including Home Affairs and the Welfare Department in an effort to seek help for the orphans,” he said. “But I have not received any help so far.” The Department of Social Development’s spokeswoman, Adele van der Linde, has since said that social development could assist in such cases. “Cases of this nature should be reported to social workers for them to see where and how they can get involved, whether it be for the child-headed households to be assisted with food and shelter or getting advice on how to obtain documents from Home Affairs,” she said. She stated that, if social workers in a particular area cannot assist or say they are unable to assist, the matter must be escalated to the particular district, by involving the social work Nkhensani Macuveze, Endlani Macuveze and Palmira Macuveze and Julius Macuveze, who were supervisor or the district executive manager. stuggling to get birth certificates, were presented with food parcels last week.

Divhambele Mbalavhali is a radio journalist and presenter who grew up with media juices flowing in his veins. He is popularly known to thousands of Phalaphala FM’s listeners as Mbalavhali D. He told Limpopo Mirror that he had started out as a freelance reporter for The Weekend Mail in
Gauteng in 2009. “I needed to cut my media teeth, so I took the plunge into freelancing,” he said. In the same year, Mbalavhali D had a short stint with popular soapie Muvhango, where he had played the role of Mbudzeni Mulaudzi. “I left both The Weekend Mail and Muvhango in 2010 to join Fifa as a Public Affairs and Communications Intern,” he said. At the end of the contract, he went to Univen Radio and worked as a radio presenter in 2011. It was only a year later that his clear voice charmed its way to Limpopo’s first commercial radio station, Capricorn FM. It seemed from the beginning that Mbalavhali D was always destined for greener pastures and progress in his career. He left Capricorn FM in 2013 to join Phalaphala FM and has never looked back. At the station he started as the producer of the most loved break-
fast show, Vhandilani. “The powers-that-be had realised that my voice was needed in the station’s line-up, so I was given a time slot to present Dzhalinga, which is an early morning party time between 00:00 and 03:00 on weekends,” he said. Despite enjoying his time on radio, the public relations bug still haunts Mbalavhali D. “It’s this bug that led me to Black Leopards FC where I am a PR and communications officer; a role that I juggle with that of a presenter at Phalaphala FM,” he said. At young age, this astute master of ceremonies, PR and communication enthusiast is surely destined for a place beyond the skies as he knows no limits. His interests include a taste for casual wear and formal attire occasionally. He said that he loved gospel music “all the way”. “Pasta and mince always whet my appetite,” he said. “My favourite book is Things I wish I had known before I got married by Garry Chapman. I also have an interest in boxing and soccer.”

Beauty contest for Tshimbupfe’s eldery At least 16 elderly ladies participated in the beauty contest at the Tshimbupfe Apostolic Faith Mission church a fortnight ago. The event, which had aimed to boost the participants’ morale, self-worth and celebrate their contribution to society, was attended by about 400 people from neighbouring villages. “As the church, we had realised that our mothers derseved to be respected, celebrated and loved at all times,” said Tshimbupfe Apostolic Faith Mission’s Mme-mufunzi Thanyani Mphephu. “We organised this event because we wanted all our elderly people In the photograph are (from left to right) Pastor Owen Mphephu, Ms Lilly Ramadzhiya, Ms to know that they have responsible children who will not neglect them.” Regina Mulaudzi, Mrs Thanyani Mphephu and Cllr Azwihangwisi Mukhaha. According to Mphephu, the preparation for the actual pageant started around July, where the old ladies were taken through the pageant etiquette. “We had spent much time with the ladies during the preparations, where we trained them and socialised,” she said. “It was during that time when we realised that this kind of activity helps the elderly to forget about stressful situations and issues that affect their lives and to focus on things that are positive. They feel appreciated and that they are still useful members of the community, even in their old age.” The 64-year-old Ms Musthekwa Maeba was crowned Mrs Tshimbupfe Apostolic Faith Mission. Ms Mutshekwa Mbedzi (85) was named 1st princess, and Ms Maria Ramaligela (59) the 2nd princess. “I am happy to be called Mrs Tshimbupfe Apostolic Faith Mission; it is indeed an honour for me,” said Ms Maeba. “I am filled with renewed strength and energy. We are now pleading with the organisers of this contest to continue to do this contest even next year.” The church’s pastor, Mr Owen Mphephu, said that the women in the church had started a praiseworthy project that needed to be sustained. Mutale Soccer Challenge knock out competition launched Advertorial A knock-out soccer challenge for teams around Mutale and the surrounding communities; which also aims to take young people off the streets; was launched here on Saturday. Three well-known businessmen in Mutale, Moudy Mudzielwana of Tshikovha Environment and Communication Consulting, Dan Neluheni of Ts Consulting, and Takalani Mabila of Rendani Trading came together to start the initiative. They said that when young people are kept busy; they could become responsible people, which is important because they are our future leaders. In a glittering ceremony held at Big Tree hotel outside Mutale on Saturday, Moudy Mudzielwana injected R139 000 into the project, to be given as
prize-money for the winning teams. Dan Neluheni donated R10 000 for the knock out competition, wherein about 50 soccer teams in Mutale would compete against each other, while Takalani Mabila handed over executive suits to members of Mutale Local Football Association, so that they can market the team wearing smart suits and be recognized within South African Football Association (SAFA). “We understand that if our young people are involved in sports, they could be kept away from all the evil that can lead them to jail. One can also make a living through playing soccer, and we are proud to announce that some of the Professional Soccer League (PSL) players have been scouted
from the local teams, and they are playing well in national teams,” said Mudzielwana. Chairman of Mutale Local Football Association, Ntodeni Mulovhedzi was over the moon when he learnt that some of the business people around Mutale are making a difference by promoting soccer talent among the young people. “Now that our young people will be kept busy, we hope that they will be getting away from crime and alcohol abuse at their young ages,” Mulovhedzi said. SAFA Vhembe President, George Kubayi said that football is one of the sports that can unite and keep the people together. “Our children should do something to better their lives and their futures; and through donations of some businessmen around here, we hope that we could develop the soccer talents of our young people. We are worried that Mutale stands alone in the Vhembe region as not having even a single artificial stadium, and we urge the municipality to erect a better stadium for Director of Tshikovha Environmental and Communication Consulting the benefit of our young people,” said Kubayi.

Huge interest in elimination rounds of Phalaphala and Matsila’s dance contest
The colourful Phawe cultural dance group.
The young people from Maniini pose after the event.
Last Saturday’s elimination rounds of the Phalaphala FM and Matsila Development Trust traditional dance competition took place at Tshifulanani Stadium with the malende and tshigombela dances being performed. Each week, groups will be eliminated until the categories have been trimmed down to five groups that will participate in the finals at the Makhvha Stadium on 12 December. At least 50 groups will be participating in various dance categories, such as tshikona, malende, tshigombela,
xigubu, ntshongolo, xibelani, xichaichai, kiba kiba and makgakgasa. The winners will share more than R100 000. Phalaphala FM’s marketing manager, Ms Rudzani Mulaudzi, says that thus far the competition has lived up to the organisers’ expectations. “Judging by the huge turnout of the spectators and the commitment of the participants, it is clear that everyone is taking this competition seriously.” According to her, the competition is the biggest traditional music event ever in the area. “We are very pleased with the
response we received from the groups that participated in this competition since it started four weeks ago.” “The competition will run one category per week,” says Mulaudzi. The final competition will proceed to Makhuvha Stadium on 12 December, with different groups participating. The sponsor, Chief Livhuwani Matsila of the Matsila Development Trust, said that the competition accommodated all the dominant language groups in the province, such as Xitsonga, Sepedi and Tshivenda.
This group of young pupils is now ready for the big school. They attended the pre-school at Murunwa Private School and “graduated” last Friday. With them in the photograpgh is their teacher, Ms Malange.

Manavhela Black Aces will no longer play in the PCO knock-out competition, as they were beaten 2-0 by Gogobole Bucs at Ravele on Saturday. It was war from the onset. It took Bucs only 25 minutes to stamp their authority on the game. Their overlapping midfielder, Thabelo Tharini, capitalized on a defensive error by Aces’ defenders and blasted in a rocket from close range. The keeper of Aces, Dineo Foromo, watched helplessly as the ball crossed the goal line. Bucs’ goal was an insult to the players of Aces. They created a number of clear chances, but their strikers caused numerous upsets by fumbling at the goal finish. The goalkeeper of Bucs, Tondani Madebeni, was the top performer for the better part of the game. He repeatedly made fine
saves to frustrate the attackers. Aces missed a fortune towards the end of the first half. The half-time score was 1-0 in favour of Bucs. The Manavhela side had two clear chances in the 50th and 54th minute. Tikanani Mandiwana received a neat pass from Rodney Lifuwa within the box and unleashed a half volley. The shot did not give the Bucs keeper, Tondani Madabeni, any headaches, as there was not enough power behind the ball. Their giant attacker, Ndivhuwo Maemu, committed a similar blunder, following a square pass from Donald Ramudzuli. Bucs scored again when their speedy midfielder, Phethani “Chicks” Sikwibilo, beat the keeper in the 77th minute.

He indicated that the sponsorship would assist them in their campaign to unearth hidden talents in the team. He praised the company for sponsoring the association, saying sport brought people together, irrespective of their religious, cultural or political backgrounds.

Mukula Young Santos reserve place in Gwede semi Mukula Young Santos secured a place in the semifinal stage of the prestigious Gwede Mantashe Soccer Challenge by beating their neighbours, Phandulaluvalo FC, 5-4 at Makwarela on Saturday. It was clear from the onset that the game was a derby as the teams displayed entertaining football from behind, dishing out some telling passes to the goal poachers. Phandula threatened to score in the 10th minute when their left-footed striker, Ampfarisaho Kutama, shot straight to the keeper after receiving a neat pass from Phathutshedzo Masindi just outside the box. call and they started to put more pressure on the opponents’ defence in their search for an early goal. The referee, Mr Olani Kwinda, flashed the only card of the game in the 24th minute. Ndivho Matshomo of Phandula found himself on the wrong side of the football law when he tackled Vhahangwele Tshifhango from behind. Santos were in the lead when the teams adjourned for half time. Their vastly experienced midfielder, Phathutshedzo Takalani, tried his luck with a long-range volley. The keeper of Phandula, Maanda Magaba, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net.
The technical team of Phandula took the risk of using all their substitution chances at once. They replaced Maanda Ramugondo, Murangi Likhala and Aluoneswi Singo with Orifuna Munzhelele, Vallen Mudzanani and Khethani Mugeri respectively. Phandula retaliated in the 78th minute. Ndivho Matshomo sent the keeper the wrong way with a ground cutter. Both sides played defensive football for the remaining part of the game. The winner was determined through penalty shootout as the score remained unchanged until the end of the regulation time. Santos converted four of their five chances while Phandula missed two.

New equipment for tennis players Timmy’s Project has decided to sponsor the Univen Tennis team, who will soon participate in the USSA Summer games at the University of Cape Town. The official handover of the equipment, to the value of about R30 000, took place a fortnight ago. Mr Timothy Khushawani, manager of Timmy’s Project, said that he had recently received a request from the team management for assistance. After assessing the application, “we felt compelled to help," he said. He said that he was very passionate about sport and would
continue assisting the team where possible. He added that the donation was also a way of motivating the team to dominate the competition and was a way of giving back to the community. “We have been touched by the plight of the young players, who seemed committed and dedicated to sports but lacked resources. We then decided to buy them brand new kit, tracksuits and racquets,” he said. Khuswani stated that they would continue to sponsor school sports and that it formed part of their mission. “It is our obligation
to ensure that the society in which we are living is healthy and, sponsoring participation in sport is a step in the right direction.” Ms Cathy Selepe praised Timmy’s Project CC for their involvement in Univen Tennis. "I'm very proud that we have grown young people of real quality,” she said. Selepe stated that she was convinced that the sponsorship would help to produce stars. “Despite the difficult economic conditions, we still find companies that are prepared to share their takings and support development.”

Training kit for Springbok sevens hope Home Defenders on top in shoot-out Limpopo’s rising rugby star and Springbok women’s sevens hope, Rembuluwani Ndou, received a major boost when Limpopo Shuttle, Printing and Signage Company’s Vhadinda Group recently donated a training kit to her. After being selected to participate in the Springbok sevens development team camps, Ndou (26) of Tshikota found herself with a dilemma as she did not have the proper training kit. An M-student in public health at Univen and Ndou’s agent, General Chauke, then took the initiative to look for a sponsor. This culminated in a relationship with Vhadinda Group CEO Castro Musinyali. Musinyali saw the potential in her and decided to assist her.
Ndou is now fresh from a training camp in Cape Town and will attend another one in January 2016. She hopes she will be good enough to play in the squad that will represent the country in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil next year. Musinyali never tires of contributing to development in his community. His generosity is fast endearing him to his people and is becoming a household name when it comes to giving. Not long ago, he donated a soccer kit to a rural village team that has been struggling without a sponsor. The kit changed the complexion of the team altogether and their performance changed for the better. “After learning of Rembu-
luwani ‘s achievements, I did not need any more motivation to decide to help her. She is our hope and she is doing very well in a sport that used to be known as predominantly white and for men. As a company, we will continue giving her the necessary support and we would like to be part of her success story,” said Musinyali. Ndou herself said the kit served as a great motivation. “I feel very great and motivated, and I can now promise that I am going to make it to the squad that will represent the country in Brazil next year. I would like to thank Mr Castro Musinyali for having faith in me; with all the support I am getting, there is no reason to disappoint,” she said.

“Donation will make a huge difference” Their relationship started some 13 years ago while the company was still in the hands of their father, John Sigidi, who owned Tshitshithe and Bros Funeral Undertakers at Lwamondo and other branches throughout Limpopo. Then the father passed away in 2012 and there was no more communication between the company and Mulenzhe Boxing Club, which Sigidi had sponsored. This relationship was revived this week, when the Sigidi siblings, who are now running the company, handed over branded caps and shirts and R15 000 to the founder of Mulenzhe Boxing Club, Mr Mpho Khorommbi. The handing over took at the compa-
ny’s headquarters at Tshifulanani outside Thohoyandou. In handing over the goods and the cash, Zwivhuya Sigidi (28), operations manager at the company, said that they were involved in many social investments and also focussed on sports development. “We are following in the footsteps of our late father who had a generous heart. He buried many poor people, he helped many with education and he also sponsored this club as a way of developing and supporting sport.” Ms Tshilidzi Sigidi, another director of the company, said they were given an instruction to serve the community by their father before he passed away.“We are also taking care of
girls from 65 schools in Vhembe, whom we give sanitary pads from time to time and we will continue being of service to our community whenever we have resources at our disposal,” she said. An ecstatic Mr Mpho Khorommbi (35) of Mulenzhe, who has produced top-class boxers who hold provincial titles, could not hide his excitement, saying the donation would make a big difference. “We are based in a province that does nothing to improve boxing, and we have to fend for ourselves to assist our boxers. Tshitshithe’s sponsorship could not have come at a better time as we are preparing our boxers for fights that could come at any given time.”

The champions of the Gwede Mantashe Soccer Challenge will be crowned at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow afternoon. The programme for the day shall commence with the semifinal matches. Mukula Young Santos, Rockers FC, Mpheni Home Defenders and United Artists booked places in the semifinal stage of the prestigious competition. Young Santos and Rockers will enter the field of play at 09:00. Rockers beat Wayeni Sea Robbers 2-1 at the Makwarela Stadium last weekend to book a place in the last four. When asked about their state of readiness for the game, the captain of Rockers, Mulalo Kudzingana, said that Santos would have a mountain to climb in order for them to book a place in the final. When responding to that, the communications manager of Santos, Mr Tendley Tshifhiwa, indicated that they had not reached the semifinal by default. He sent a warning to Rockers, saying they must prepare themselves for what he described as the “mother
of all battles”. Mpheni Home Defenders and United Artists will meet in the second semifinal, starting at 11:00. Artists will be without their striker, Vhonani Munyai, who was given his marching orders in their semifinal game against Muziafera Blue Eagles. They beat Blue Eagles 2-1 at the Makwarela Stadium last Saturday. Home Defenders beat Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions 5-4 in the quarterfinal stage. The winners in the semifinal matches will meet in the final at 15:00. The champions for the tournament will become R15 000 richer and will also receive a soccer kit. The runners up will receive R10 000 and soccer kit, while the teams that will lose in the semifinal stage will each take home R5 000 and soccer kit. Some of the dignitaries who are expected to attend the event include the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, Dr Irvin Khoza (chairman of Orlando Pirates), Mr Kaizer Motaung (chairman of Kaiz- Vhonani Munyai of Artists will miss tomorrow’s er Chiefs) and Mr Patrice Motsepe match, as he saw red against Muziafera Blue (chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns).
