Commuters on the Thohoyandou road could not resist stopping at this accident scene around midday on Wednesday. A small truck, carrying a full load of atchar, overturned while on its way to Thohoyandou from Louis Trichardt. Long before rescue workers arrived at the scene, more than half of the atchar load was scooped up in empty containers and taken from the scene. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

Twee kunsskole van Louis Trichardt, La Mia Nuvoletta Art Studio en KidZart, het saam ‘n uitstalling van kinderkuns gehou. The provincial Department of Water Affairs and Forestry responded last week to the public outcry that followed the damage caused by contract workers to baobab trees along the D2692 road between Musina and Venetia Mine. As part of a provincial contract (contract number PUDP 573), a contractor was appointed to clear the road reserve on this stretch of provincial road. The clearing of the road reserve, however, sparked outrage among residents after people noticed that several baobab trees within the road reserve had been severely damaged by the contract workers. In some cases it appears that baobab branches were not even cut but were torn off trees. Baobab trees are listed as a protected tree in terms of Section 15(1) of the National Forest Act of 1998. The Act states that “no person may cut, disturb, damage or destroy any protected tree or possess, collect, remove, transport, export, purchase, sell, donate or in any other manner acquire or dispose of any protected tree”. Last Thursday, Ms Mudau Ndinannyi from the provincial Department of Water Affairs and Forestry responded by stating that the department was not aware of the trimmed trees, but that they were aware that a li-

cense had been issued to the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) to trim the trees. This, she said, was done in accordance with the requirements of the National Forest Act, Act 84 of 1998, and by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “If it is determined that the contractor acted without the necessary authority to prune, he or she will be conducting an offence in terms of Section 62

(c) (i) and the action would be to enforce the Act (admission of guilt fine route, court case, etc.) which is not the case in the matter because the permit is granted to RAL. Should the contractor not comply with the condition of the permit, the action will be taken against RAL as the applicant,” Ndinannyi wrote in her response. She added that the matter had also been communicated to RAL.

Honderde kindertjies is deur haar versorg. “Dit alles sou nie vandag moontlik gewees het nie as dit nie vir my man, kinders, onderwysers, kleuters en hul ouers was nie. Beminde en geliefde tannie Ella oorlede Een van Louis Trichardt se mees beminde en geliefde inwoners, tannie Ella Agenbacht, is verlede Donderdag, 27 November, na ‘n kort siekbed in die ouderdom van 77 jaar oorlede. “Ons moet afskeid neem van ons mamma en ouma. Die gat in ons harte is onmeetbaar, maar dit word opgevul met dankbaarheid dat Mamma se lyding kort was en met vrolike herinneringe

aan ‘n pragtige mens,” het haar kinders en kleinkinders gesê. Tannie Ella is op 25 Mei 1937 te Koppies in die Vrystaat gebore as Elsie Maria Dorothea de Bruin. Op ‘n baie jong ouderdom verhuis die gesin na Boksburg waar sy grootword en haar laerskoolloopbaan by Laerskool Baanbreker voltooi, asook in 1955 by Voortrekker Hoërskool matrikuleer. Van 1956 tot 1980 werk sy by die destydse Volkskas Bank, asook die munisipale pensioenfonds en Standard Telephones and Cables. In hierdie tydperk ontmoet sy haar man, die ewe bekende en beminde oom Wille Agenbacht, tydens ‘n KJV-kamp in 1957. In 1958 besluit die jong paartjie om te trou en drie kinders, Gustav, Elize en Lo-Ammi, word uit die huwelik gebore. In 1980 verhuis die gesin na Tzaneen en in 1984 na Louis Trichardt. Hier werk sy tot met haar aftrede in 1995 by die destydse Intercity Delta. Baie inwoners sal ook onthou hoe lief sy vir brei was en sy kon enige stuk breiwerk soos ‘n ware kunswerk laat lyk. Oom Willie en sy kinders het ná tannie Ella se afsterwe hul opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor ds. Rudolph Botha en sy vrou Edith, drs. Gaigher en Badenhorst en hul spreekkamer personeel, asook die personeel van die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal, vir hul ondersteuning tydens haar siekte. “Dan aan vriende, familie, lede van die NG-gemeente Soutpansberg (met spesiale vermelding van die Evas), Gister-se-Jeugklub en die breër gemeenskap: Baie, baie dankie vir jul wonderlike ondersteuning in die vorm van gebede, oproepe, besoeke, SMS’e, kos aandra, hulp met haar versorging tuis en watter aspekte ons dalk misgekyk het. Cell C the worst performer in Limpopo A recent study by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has identified problems with the accessibility and retention of mobile voice calls in Limpopo. ICASA released their quarterly quality-of-service report, which looks at the performance of South Africa’s three biggest mobile network operators, at the end of November. The purpose of the report is to assess the standard and quality of services offered by the mobile giants, MTN, Vodacom and Cell C. Monitoring was conducted in Mokopane,

Mutale, Polokwane, Sekhukhune and Thohoyandou by means of a drive-testing. With this test, focus was placed on network performance in terms of accessibility and retention of voice calls. ICASA found that MTN was accessible in the test areas, but failed in the retainablity test in Sekhukhune. Vodacom was also accessible in all the test areas, but failed retainability in Thohoyandou, Mutale and Sekhukhune. Cell C was found to be the worst of the network providers. They failed accessibility

in Thohoyandou, Mutale and Mokopane, as well as the retainability in Thohoyandou, Mutale Sekhukhune and Mokopane. ICASA noted that they have offered all three operators the opportunity to comment on the areas of concern highlighted in its report. “Both Vodacom and Cell C have taken to address areas of concern and ICASA continues to engage with the licensees for better quality of service. MTN did not submit any further comments,” said the communication authority.

Double murder accused to remain behind bars The man accused of the double murder of Darlene Mapula Madiba (34) and her friend Victor Mthokozisi Radebe (36) briefly appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Tuesday. Vincent Teboho Moabelo was the ex-boyfriend of Madiba and was arrested in connection with their deaths on 13 October. Madiba and Radebe were shot dead in Madiba’s Louis Trichardt home in Duiker Street, shortly after her court order for protection against Moabelo was cancelled. According to court records, Moabelo was charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm in August this year. The newspaper was able to determine that the circumstances which led to Moabelo’s weapon being handed back to him were investigated by the Makhado police, as well as the national prosecuting authority (NPA). Even if Moabelo is cleared of the murder charges against him, the release of his weapon was not supposed to have happened before the first case of assault had been properly investigated and finalized. Moabelo will appear in court again on Friday, 5 December.

Doris Mthembi a free woman again Doris Mthembi is a free woman again. The 41-year-old Mthembi turned to the High Court to ask for permission to appeal her sentence. She was handed a six-year prison stay in November of last year, when she was found guilty of perjury. Mthembi lied to the police when she accused her ex-husband, Mr Goddard Tendani Mugwena, of kidnapping and raping her. She has served just more than a year of her sentence. Mthembi’s argument for her

appeal will be that the Louis Trichardt Regional Court had been too harsh and unfair when it handed down a custodial sentence to her. She further feels that the court did not take into consideration that she has little children that she has to take care of. On Monday, during a brief court appearance, Mthembi was released on R3 000 bail. If she fails to prove that she has lodged her appeal application with the High Court by 28 January, her bail will be revoked.

SANParks official’s case postponed

A South Africa National Parks (SANParks) employee, accused of selling illegal hunting packages to game hunters, again appeared in court this week. Michael Sematla was arrested on 27 January, following several months of investigation by the SANParks Environmental Crime Investigative Unit. Sematla allegedly sold animals to hunters

by means of fake permits. SANParks first realized something was wrong when they discovered a giraffe carcass in Den Staat, which is an open-system park bordering the Mapungubwe National Park. Sematla was employed as a general worker for the Mapungubwe Park and allegedly used SANParks stationery to mislead professional hunters and

game meat operators to hunt on Den Staat. Permits were allegedly issued for the hunting of leopards as well. Sematla, who is currently out on bail, appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Tuesday. His case was postponed for trial until 29 January 2015 to afford his attorney time to prepare his defence.

Rudolph en sy vrou Edith, afgeneem tydens die kaas-en-biltong aand verlede Vrydag ter viering van die gemeente se 60ste verjaardag. Pieter, Dewald en Gustav het die hele naweek saam met die gemeente gekuier. Saterdag was daar ‘n kersmark op die kerkterrein en die aand is daar lekker saamgekuier om die spitbraai. Die naweek se feesvieringe is afgesluit met dr. Gous wat Sondag die oggenddiens by die gemeente behartig het, met Dewald wat met sy sangstem die nodige luister aan die geleentheid gegee het. Hier is ons wenners vir 2015! Die Zoutpansberger en Limpopo Mirror se jaarlikse kalenderfoto-kompetisie het vanjaar weereens ‘n paar praginskrywings opgelewer. Net meer as 40 van die streek se fotograwe het ingeskryf, vir ‘n totaal van by die 200 foto’s. Vanjaar was dit weereens moeilik vir die beoordelaars om slegs 12 weninskrywings te kies. Diegene wat nie gewen het nie, moet glad nie teleurgesteld wees nie, want enige van die oorblywende agt foto’s wat deel was van die top 20 keuses vir finale beoordeling kon net sowel gewen het. Die oorgrote meerderheid van vanjaar se inskrywings was weereens natuur- en dierelewefoto’s. Daar was talle wat dadelik uitgestaan het, maar daar was ook dié foto’s wat met ‘n bietjie meer “afronding” soveel beter kon gelyk het. In dié verband gee die beoordelaars ‘n paar wenke vir volgende jaar se kompetisie:

* Die beste tyd om natuur– en dierelewefoto’s te neem is vroegoggend en laatmiddag wanneer die opkomende of ondergaande son die kleure in die foto soveel ryker maak; * Belê gerus in ‘n paar goeie filters vir jou kamera. ‘n Polariserende filter help baie om die kleure in die foto uit te bring en soveel helderder te maak; * As diere of landskaptonele gefotografeer word, vermy mensgemaakte voorwerpe soos paaie of telefoonpale en –drade in die foto; * Let op die komposisie van die foto (met die klem op die twee-derdes reël). Skuif die voorwerp in die foto twee-derdes links of regs in die foto. Voorwerpe wat bloot in die middel van die foto geplaas word, maak meestal nie ‘n goeie foto nie; en * Belê in ‘n goeie lens, veral as daar van ‘n telefotolens gebruik gemaak word.

Die optiese kwaliteit van die lens maak dikwels die verskil tussen ‘n baie goeie of swak foto. Soos gewoonlik was daar weer ‘n paar fotograwe wat meer as een weninskrywing opgelewer het, alhoewel niemand tydens die beoordelingsproses geweet het wie die fotograwe was nie. Daar was nuwe wenners, maar ook fotograwe wat al vorige jare weninskrywings opgelewer het. Daar sal binne die volgende week telefonies met elk van die wenners geskakel word om te reël vir die betaling van die foto’s – R700 vir elk van die 12 wenfoto’s. Die fotograaf wat die beste gevaar het, was Christo Tait met drie wenfoto’s. Hy sal prysgeld van R2 100 huis toe neem. Martie de Jager en Jaco Lyon lewer elk twee weninskrywings en palm elkeen R1 400 vir hulle moeite in. Die res van die wenfotograwe wat elk R700 in hul sak sal druk is Ashleigh Cloete, Ronel van der Schyff, Sandra Boshoff, Peet Snyder en Eben van de Vyver. Die 12 wenfoto’s word opgeneem in ‘n A2-formaat, volkleur 2015-kalender. Alhoewel die kalender deur die Zoutpansberger en Limpopo Mirror gebruik sal word vir bemarkingsdoeleindes, sal die kalenders ook aan die publiek beskikbaar gestel word om te koop teen ‘n minimale bedrag van R50. it is Maandagoggend, 1 Desember. Ek word wakker en ek besef die voorreg om na 12 jaar ‘n boodskap te bring aan die plaaslike gemeenskap. Eerstens, om my dank uit te spreek teenoor my God, my Saligmaker, Redder en Geneser. Twee dens, my dank aan die gemeenskap wat my opgedra het in hul gebede en wat my bygestaan het. As u sou onthou, was ek in ‘n fratsongeluk met ‘n vurkhyser en het ten volle herstel. Die voorreg is so groot dat God my die geleentheid gespaar het om my tweelingkinders die geleentheid te kan gee om my sakeonderneming oor te neem en hul touwys

te maak. Die gebeure 12 jaar gelede het plaasgevind oor die Kerstyd, daarom is my boodskap in hierdie tyd: Gaan die Kerstyd in en wees versigtig. Spaar jou familie en vriende hartseer, sodat elkeen kan terugkeer huiswaarts met liefde en geluk om 2015 met vreugde in te gaan. Vertrou op God, plaas Hom in beheer, en kom veilig tuis. Dear Mr Mayor, what do you fear?

ear Mr Mayor, Some three weeks ago you stood up in Council and vented your anger at the people responsible for the name change situation in Louis Trichardt. You vowed to fight against the ones who are “against transformation”. You even made a comparison between such people and birds that flew in from Europe. It took some time for me to digest what you were on about. Transfor mation is a complicated issue, because one person’s transformation is another’s racism. Some people fear transformation, while others use transformation as an ideology to instil fear. This made me wonder what the fear or the anger is all about. Should we still, in the town as it is today, fear transformation? I love numbers. In spite of what Mark Twain is supposed to have said (“lies, damned lies, and statistics”) I find solace in these statistical facts. It is also by looking at these realities that I start to wonder whether our elected leaders fear empty rooms, simply because they never bothered to open the doors. According to the 2011 census data, the Makhado Municipality has just over 10 000 residents who classified themselves as “white”. That is less than 2% of the population in the municipality. If you look at the two wards that fall in the traditional Louis Trichardt town area, this figure drops to just below 7 400. Take into consideration that just over 50% of these are in the “economically active” age groups and you realise that the “threat” is even less impressive. In the past 20 years, Louis Trichardt underwent a metamorphosis that is probably difficult to surpass in the rest of the country. For more than 10 years I lived in a house in town where all my neighbours were black. Their neighbours were also predominantly black, and if I may say so – I could not ask for better neighbours. This brings me to the other reality – the ones making the biggest con-

tribution to the town’s coffers are not the aforementioned 2%. Those who still believe that all services in town are being sponsored by the “white” residents need to get in touch with reality. It is simply a statistical impossibility. If you live in a house and two or three of your neighbours are not white, you make the lesser contribution. During the last census, almost 30 000 households in the Makhado Municipality indicated that they have Internet access. Most of these (64,7%) were via cell phones, but the reality is that these households are in all probability making the biggest contribution via their taxes. The argument that the country’s wealth is still centred among certain race groups might be valid, but given the figures in the municipali ty, this becomes almost irrelevant. In the Makhado Municipality, 3 688 households declared an annual income of more than R300 000 per year. Even if all the white households in town fall in this category (which is totally impossible), this will not represent two thirds of the households. But the figures also tell another story. It tells a story of poverty, where only 26,3% of the population is employed, where more than 2 000 households in our municipality are headed by children below the age of 18 and where only 30% of the people have completed matric. Why don’t we stop the racial biases? Why don’t we rather ask what the historical figure Louis Trichardt had contributed to society? Was he the Biblical “salt of the earth” or did he simply arrive in this beautiful part of the world to start wars and divide people? If he was not worthy of having a town named after him, then start the process again to have the town renamed. Mr Mayor, you are in a position where you don’t have to fight a racial war. You can listen to history, as told by different groups, and base decisions on facts. - Anton van Zyl

it is ‘n helder, skoongewaste Maandag oggend in Pretoria toe Daisy en Kathy by die stasie registreer vir die Bloutrein. Oral is daar vriendelike gesigte van deftige personeel. Halfagt die oggend verskyn daar glase sjampanje in Daisy en Kathy se hande terwyl hulle bagasie suutjies verdwyn. Op silwer skinkborde is daar guitige klein ontwerpershappies wat aangebied word vir die passasiers. Daisy se oë dwaal oor die versameling toe riste - die meeste natuurlik buitelanders, van ‘n sekere ouderdom en baie duidelik welvarend. “Dis ook maar dêm goed dat ons by al daai haar- en skoonheidsalonne uitgehang het, of hoe vriendin? En al die nuwe klere ... Ons is duidelik nie heeltemal deel van hulle dammetjie nie! Maar gelukkig help die rooi naels, die ge klitsde bolla en die nuwe haaipolfaais om ons te kamoefleer, nê? Kyk, kyk gou daar, Kathy, daai mense het ‘n volledige reeks Louis Vuitton bagasie. Tot die skeepskis! Ek kan so wragtig my oë nie glo nie...” “Maak toe jou mond, Daisy, en moet asseblief tog nie so staar nie! Hou die pose, Daise,

hou die pose – verbeel jou dat jy ook ‘n celebrity is. Hier is vir jou nog ‘n glas bubbly, dit sal help om jou airs en graces te gee.” Kathy kan haar lag nie hou nie. Sy kan ook nie besluit of dit noodwendig ‘n goeie eienskap is dat Daisy so ‘n ope boek is nie. Sy sou nooit ‘n goeie politikus wees nie... ‘n Aantreklike ouer man kom stel homself aan Daisy en Kathy voor. Sy naam is Herman en die twee is aangenaam verras toe hy nie ‘n passasier is nie, maar hulle persoonlike butler vir die volgende twee dae! Hy nooi hulle op ‘n kort toer van die Bloutrein voordat hy hulle na hulle kompartement vergesel. “’n Laat ontbyt word bedien tot ongeveer 14:30, dan is daar ‘n egte High Tea om 15:30 en julle weet dat daar ‘n dragkode is vir aandete? Net julle fraaiste en blinkste tabbertjies sal doen vir die aand,” gee hy vriendelik advies. “Maar julle twee pragtige dames is natuurlik welkom om vooraf by die kroeg in die sitkamerwa iets te drink voor ete. En gedurende die dag is daar die Observation Car of die Club Car waar julle allerhande afleiding sal vind of net die geselskap van die ander passasiers kan opsoek. Rook word toegelaat in die Club Car. Alle eet- en drinkgoed is ingesluit by die prys, behalwe natuurlik vir Franse sjampanje en kaviaar.”

“Nee, regtig?” vra Kathy teleurgestel. “Die Franse vonkel vloei nie verniet nie? Wat van oesters? Is dit darem ingesluit?” “Soveel as wat jy aan kan weglê,” belowe Herman. “Julle is ook welkom om kamerdiens te bestel – daar is ‘n spyskaart op die tafel by die venster. Ek is 24 uur tot julle diens en as dit van my afhang sal julle nooit honger of dors ly nie!” verklaar hy opgeruimd. “Salig, saliger, Bloutrein!’ sug Daisy en sak in ‘n leunstoel neer met haar lang bene oor die armleuning. “Ek is só bly my geliefde het my in hierdie trippie ingepraat! En is dit nou nie perfek dat jy dit saam met my doen nie, Kathy? Kyk, ons klere is alreeds uitgepak, ons hoef regtig nie ‘n vinger te lig nie!” “Kom ons gaan rook ‘n sigaret in die Club Car, en sodra die trein goed op pad is, kan ons gaan brêkfis eet. Oeee, ons moet seker maak ons mis niks nie, Daisy,” raak Kathy ook skielik uit haar vel uit. “Ek het nog nooit ‘n High Tea gehad nie. Nie eers toe ons net na skool vir daardie tyd in London was nie. Elkeen sal verslag moet doen van sy gedagtes, woorde en dade. Die belangrikste is egter ons verhouding met Hom wat as Regter sal oordeel. Die weergebore kinders van God sal die versekering hê dat hul sondes vergewe is as gevolg van die reddingswerk van Jesus Christus aan die kruis. Hulle sal vertroue hê want Jesus Christus die Regter is niemand anders as Jesus Christus die Redder nie. In Joël 3:16 lees ons: “Die Here is ‘n toevlug vir Sy volk.” Die Regter is die Seun wat self Sy kinders beskerm. Christus nooi almal om na Hom te kom vir vergifnis van sonde en die ewige lewe. ZOUTPANSBERGER For Mr Kos Coronaios, the fight against poachers setting wire snares on his smallholding just outside Louis Trichardt on the road to Elim is a constant one. “I have removed something like 200 snares off the plot in the last couple of weeks. Now this!” Coronaios was referring to the message (see photo) left for him by one of the poachers at the carcass of one of the animals caught in a snare on his property. “The police were prompt and professional, and have opened up an illegal poaching and intimidation docket. Hopefully we can flush him or them out!” said Coronaios. In the meantime, Coronaios said, they remain terrified of the damage these snares could do to our horses,” Coronaios said.

Awards for local nut farmers Green Farms Nut Company held their year-end function for their Limpopo farmers at their Levubu processing factory on 14 November. The function was very much a social occasion and an opportunity for Green Farms Nut Company to thank farmers for their support, as well as the White River Factory staff for their hard work. Prizes were also given out to farmers for various quality categories. Alex Whyte, one of Green and Gold Marketing’s sales managers, updated the farmer’s briefly on the macadamia market. “The 2014 season has been the best ever recorded. Green Farms Nut Company achieved the highest prices ever and de-

mand from our customers, despite these high prices, remains incredibly strong. Come February, we will be paying a good agterskot (backpay) to our growers who supplied us in 2014. Our farmers will be smiling,” Whyte said. Werner van Niekerk, the company’s procurement manager, also explained how the payments to growers are arranged: “Green Farms Nut Company has a unique sales model whereby any sales prices achieved over and above the offer made at the beginning of the year is paid to the farmers in full. The result is an extremely lucrative agterskot at the end of the year, and we believe we pay the best in the South African industry,” he said.

P&L reward their top cyclists The P&L Cycling Club in Louis Trichardt ended their year’s activities on a high with the hosting of the club’s annual prize-giving function on 29 November. During the event, 16 of the club members received certificates for official kilometers done in 2014, from 500km for bronze to 2500km for a platinum award. The time-trial and club champions in every category were also honoured with a very unique trophy. The top awards of the evening went to Douglas Archer as most improved junior mountain bike cyclist, while Zian van de Heever walked away with the trophy for most improved junior road

The club’s most improved newcomers were Turner de Swardt and Chris Knoesen (males) and Jernay McLeod (female), while the award for outstanding track building was awarded to the Venter family (Casper, Sarah, Casper John and Owen) for all their hard work in creating the permanent mountain bike trails in Komatiland Forest. Another top award, that of Most Outstanding Achievement, was awarded to Amanda Kruger for participating in the International Duathlon event, representing both the P&L Cycling Club and the Soutpansberg Athletics Club. Johan van Dijkhorst walked away with the club’s ambassador’s trophy for not only representing the club at all events, but also the member whose loyality to the club was exceptional. He was always promoting the club by marketing and canvassing for new members by promoting school cycling and organising the first ever Limpopo MTB XCO Schools League. The Handicap trophies were awarded to Renata Joubert and Zian vd Heever, who performed exceptionally well for their respective ages. The evenings top award, that of Cyclists of the Year, was awarded to another of the club’s upcoming cycling sensations, Marco Roets. He constantly achieved at all events, is very active in all the club’s activities and social functions and promotes the club by wearing the official club colours to all races.
