Residents beware - the “toilet scammers” are back - page 4

You can save them By Jo Robinson

Last week’s news of the death of Sharkie the Bull Terrier in a poacher’s snare has residents calling for action to be taken to prevent this from happening again. Alicia Thomas and Lesley Gaigher of the Louis Trichardt SPCA hope to take steps with the help of the community to do just that. They will try to do this together

with Lawrence Khodobo, senior inspector at the town’s SPCA, fellow committee members and local volunteers. At present, the SPCA conducts weekly outreach programmes to help animals and their owners both in and around Louis Trichardt and in villages further afield. Their outreach activities include the obvious spaying, deworming and medical assistance, but the SPCA concentrates

very much on education as well. Alicia says that a lack of understanding of what an animal needs rather than malicious and wilful mistreatment sometimes leads to the neglect of animals. Some cases of actual abuse obviously also occur, and these outreach activities can pinpoint them. Then, if necessary, Lawrence will institute proceedings to help such animals and prosecute abusers. (Contd on P2)

Armed robbery suspects denied bail By Andries van Zyl

The two alleged armed robbers arrested in Louis Trichardt’s CBD last Tuesday both appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 27 September. The two suspects, Mpho Marchel (32) and Nkhume Leshiba (38), appeared on charges of being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle and two illegal firearms and ammunition. They were denied bail and their case was postponed until 5 October for further police investigation. Marchel and Leshiba were arrested during a joint-intelligence-driven operation composed of various police units and the Makhado Rural Safety structures (including the town and farm watch) as a concerted effort to eradicate incidents of TRIO crimes (robbery with aggravating circumstances, which include carjacking, house and business robbery) that are still prevalent in the area and in some parts of this province. Outreach programmes run by the Louis Trichardt SPCA staff and “The arrest emanated from an incident volunteers happen every weekend. received a tip-off from members of the community about the existence of a suspicious motor vehicle with armed occupants roaming around the area with a planned criminal mission. The joint operation was immediately activated and reacted swiftly, until these suspects were pulled off the road and apprehended,” said provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe. During the arrest, two pistols, eight rounds of ammunition and one vehicle, a Mercedes Benz that was reported stolen in the Mokopane policing precinct earlier this month, were recovered. Following their arrest, Ngoepe said that the two men were also positively linked to a series of serious TRIO and other crimes in the Mahwelereng and Seshego Clusters. “The suspects will still appear before the Seshego and Mokerong Magistrate Courts respectively next week,” said Ngoepe. In the meantime, the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, applauded the team of police officers and the Rural Safety community who participated during this operation on a job well done.

five metres and a further one metre from the collar to the running chain is illegal, many people are still tying animals to too short chains. Not only this, but they are putting actual chains and padlocks around dogs’ necks, resulting in severe discomfort, pain and injury. Donations of old or new collars and leads of all sizes are desperately needed and residents are asked to contact the SPCA if they have any that can be collected. Alicia and Lesley will be meeting with Lawrence and local SPCA committee members to discuss the planned new outreach programme, called Sharkie’s Snare Search Project, named in memory of Sharkie. They are calling on members of the community to help with this in any way they can. A specific need is for people willing to join them one weekend morning whenever they can, to search for and collect snares around the trails in the forestry area. Dates and times will be announced in the very near future. They hope to conduct these searches on a regular basis and are hoping that Louis Trichardt’s “muscles” will come forward to help them and to help any animals that could possibly get killed or maimed in these horrific death traps. (Contd from P1) The SPCA wants to join with the community of Louis Trichardt to help animals as much as they can and are calling on residents to come forward and offer whatever assistance, funding, animal feed or equipment that they feel they are able and willing to give. Several programmes exist to get involved with. At present, the SPCA team drives around looking for cases that need action. “We have to find cruelty,” says Lesley, “It’s not going to come to us.” Apart

from investigating and helping with cases of abuse, the local SPCA team arranges for animals to be sterilised, dewormed, treated for mange, and vaccinated, especially for rabies. Alicia says that she has personally witnessed 10 cases of rabies in three years, which, she says, is a number that can be classified as an epidemic, given the nature of this particular virus. One of the SPCA’s current drives is also their Break the Chains programme. While chaining an animal, other than with a running chain of at least

Consumers run on fumes after latest fuel price hike By Jo Robinson

Reeling from steadily increasing fuel prices since May this year, residents who had been hoping for some respite from further hikes are out of luck for now. This week, prices increased to record-breaking numbers. According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), this increase is once again the result of “the rising price of crude oil, compounded by exchange rate depreciation resulting in record prices of fuel at the pump”. The slight relief of no increase during September, due to a brief intervention by the government, has been followed by massive hikes this month. These increases mean that a litre of 95 octane petrol now costs R17.08, while all diesel went up by R1.24 per litre. Paraffin is up by R1.39 per litre and gas by R1.79 per kilogram. Residents, who have already commented on the financial impact of the previous increments, are now left concerned about the impact this latest hike will have on their way of life as well as their ability to commute as much as their families require. People are unimpressed with the fuel-conserving tips doing the rounds and are more concerned about rumours of more increases to come. In an interview with Jacaranda FM’s Martin Bester, Layton Beard of the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) unofficially predicted a further increase next month. “In terms of the outlook of the fuel price,” he said, “the trend as we have seen it is most likely to increase in November

He added that the cause of the accidents of three people in a gruesome vehicle accident was still unclear at that stage “…but the ongoing during the early hours of Tuesday morning on police investigations will tell,” said Ngoepe. the N1 south just outside Louis Trichardt. A case of culpable homicide was opened after a truck travelling north collided head-on with a sedan at around 04:00 near the weighbridge. All three the occupants of this sedan died instantly. No one was injuredin the truck. The deceased are aged between 22 and 30 and are members of a Pretoria-based church. “The process of their identification is still The badly mangled wreck of the sedan in which three people, including underway, but it was an international recording artist, were killed early Tuesday morning confirmed that one of outside Louis Trichardt. as well.” The Department of Energy (DoE) stated that fuel prices were adjusted monthly in South Africa. They said that international factors included the fact that South Africa imported both crude oil and finished products at a price set at international level, including importation costs such as shipping. They cited the current rand-to-US-dollar exchange rate as a further reason for the exorbitant hike in the fuel price this month, as well as the increase in the price of crude oil from US$74.25 to 78.25 per barrel. Other contributing factors stated were the unwillingness by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries to increase their production output and the negative impact of the season’s hurricanes on petroleum infrastructure in the US during the period under review. They continued, “Furthermore, the looming sanctions against Iran oil exports by the USA will put more pressure on crude oil prices”. Not only residents of Louis Trichardt are worried. The AA has named the country’s economic policy as the culprit and referred to the October increase as “catastrophic”. Head of marketing and information at FNB Agric Business Dawie Maree stated that it would be small businesses and poorer households who would bear the brunt of this increase as their transport costs accounted for a large portion of their household expenses. He said that these sustained fuel price increases would “further erode disposable income and cause financial stress”. Maree continued that locals were facing a dim festive season if the current pace of fuel price increases was sustained in the two months ahead.

Hospital CEO suspended amidst investigation By Kaizer Nengovhela

The Limpopo Department of Health suspended the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital’s chief executive officer (CEO), Dr Irene Malatji, last week while allegations of corruption, maladministration and nepotism are being investigated. The suspension follows weeks of protest action by employees and general workers at the hospital. The workers demanded the resignation of the CEO. Last month, the workers’ union representative handed over a memorandum to a representative of the Department of Health wherein the department is urged to remove the CEO from the hospital. The groups involved include members affiliated to the National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa), Health & Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (Hospersa) and the Public Servants Association (PSA). The Department of Health’s spokesperson, Mr Neil Shikwambane, said that Malatji’s suspension followed an investigation into allegations of nepotism and corruption. He did not want to elaborate on the nature of the charges against Malatji, merely

stating that no charges had been brought at the time. “We are still waiting for the investigator’s report,” he said. Asked how long Malatji’s suspension would continue, Shikwambane stated that he could not give a time frame, as “these things can drag on and on”. He did, however, state that the department wanted to conclude the issue as a matter of urgency. For the interim, Ms Lettie Ramaru has been appointed as acting CEO. Nehawu’s local chairperson, Mr Mashudu Mabala, said that the workers and unions were satisfied with the department’s decision to suspend Malatji, whom they blamed for not providing “strategic leadership”. He said that Malatji had tarnished the image of the hospital and they needed a person who would change the hospital to be a home of the patients.

Duvenhage and Hibbert acquitted due to discrepancies Court News

The two Louis Trichardt men accused of trying to steal a municipal water pump were both acquitted on all charges last Wednesday. Petrus Richard Duvenhage (24) and Andries Hibbert (26) were allegedly caught red-handed while attempting to steal a municipal water pump in December 2016. They were subsequently charged in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act, Act 18 of 2015, in the Louis Trichardt District Court on 2 October last year. At the time, talk was that an example might be made of the pair as this case was only the second time that the newly amended Act 18 of 2015 had been used in a criminal charge. This law is specifically targeted at dealing with increasing incidents of vandalism and theft of important infrastructure, particularly very costly infrastructure such as municipal water pumps, as well as the

ongoing stealing of copper from wherever thieves can find it. Duvenhage and Hibbert were charged with conspiring to damage or destroy essential infrastructure. On 5 December 2016, Duvenhage and Hibbert allegedly broke into the municipal pumphouse in Kort Street. Local police patrolling in the area investigated and noticed a parked vehicle nearby. On entering the pumphouse, the officers allegedly came upon Duvenhage and Hibbert in the process of cutting the cables with the supposed intention of removing the pump. Originally charged with breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods, the decision was made to rather charge them with the newly amended law. This was not only because the damage that they allegedly sought to do would have resulted in exorbitant losses to the municipality, but also because the supply of water is an essential service. Duvenhage and Hibbert’s

alleged actions therefore caused a break in this service to residents, which rendered them liable to be charged in this way. Two police officers and two municipal officials testified in the case. The court found, however, that too many discrepancies and contradictions existed in the evidence given by the witnesses for the State. Some of the discrepancies included what the police officers had witnessed at the scene and the time they witnessed it. Subsequently, the court ruled that the case against Duvenhage and Hibbert could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt, and the two were therefore acquitted of all charges. If Duvenhage and Hibbert had been found guilty, they could have faced sentences of a maximum of 30 years in jail or a fine of R100 million each, as well as being found unfit to possess a firearm. The case was heard in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court.

During the course of this viewing, one of the women asked if she could use the toilet as she had a “terribly upset stomach”. The domestic worker allowed her to use the en suite toilet in the master bedroom unsupervised. Apparently ecstatic about the house, the “buyer” left a note saying “Can you pls call me when you come home. I want to talk to you about the house. I really want to talk to you!!!” The name used on the note was Sharon Nkuna. After phoning the number left by “Sharon” several times without being able to have a proper conversation with the woman, Haasbroek stopped trying to get hold of her, and it was only the following morning that he and his wife Tillie realised that they had actually been robbed. Tillie’s jewellery box had been pillaged by the thieving pair, who clearly

- 079 516 8303

ound Table 66 hosted Jonathan, also known as Radio Raps, on 29 September at the local wrestling club’s hall. As was expected, it was again a huge turnout. Everybody appeared to gasp for breath as the jokes kept on coming for the 90-minute duration of the show. Round Table 66 would like to thank the public for the support they have shown as the show was a total sell-out. A special thanks goes to Louis Trichardt Lodge for hosting Radio Raps, Leach Printers for the printing of the tickets at no charge, Palm Liquor Store for their willingness again to ensure all our liquor requirements were met, Ladies Circle 4 for the food stall and the local wrestling club that made the hall available for us to use. And then lastly, thank you to all the Round Table members, friends and their family members that assisted with all the operational requirements of the event.

Lucky will be greatly missed by many local residents By Jo Robinson

Most Louis Trichardt residents know and like the men who work as car guards and assist shoppers with all sorts of things from pushing trolleys to cars, to helping to unpack them, and then returning the trolleys to the shop entrance at Checkers. Three of them have been there mostly every day for quite a few years, so when one of them, Lucky Mudau, did not show up, many people noticed. In a letter to the Zoutpansberger last week, Ms Ria van Zyl said: “People don’t always know the car guards’ names. You just nod in their direction and trust that everything will be fine when you get

back to your car. Lucky was one who knew everyone. He never minded or complained on the days when you never had a few rand for him. He always greeted you with the words, ‘Next time, drive safe,’ as he closed your door for you. Lucky, you were a good person, and I will miss you very much.” When the Zoutpansberger tried to find a photograph of Lucky to share the sad news of his demise with the very many people whom he helped and spoke to every day, we could not find a single one. Another well-known and well-liked car guard at Checkers, Joseph Ratombo, said that he appreciated people’s wanting to know because, thus far, nobody had been able to trace any of Lucky’s family. Lucky passed away in the Louis Trichardt Me-

morial Hospital after a brief illness on 19 September. Ratombo said that they had been co-workers for over six years and that he, too, would miss his friend very much. It saddened him, he said, that no trace could be found of any of Lucky’s family at this time, and he hoped that someone might possibly read this article who had some information. If anyone knows Lucky Mudau’s family, he asked them to contact him as soon as possible on 072 230 7047. Mr Joseph Ratombo.

081 217 9213 of Frikkie by 082 058 7601. Hulle kan ook vir bystand met slangbyte geskakel word, asook Mike Perry (083 448 8854), Johan Marais (082 494 2039) of Arno Naudé (083 739 9303).

Questions as NLC-funded school starts falling apart by the NPO Directorate. Despite not complying with these warnings, Simba’s registration was never cancelled, thanks to a still-in-force moratorium on removing non-complaint NPOs implemented in 2015 by then DSD Minister Bathabile Dhlamini. As a result, an unknown number of non-compliant NPOs such as the SCDF, which would have been deregistered were it not for the moratorium, are still included on the DSD’s register of NPOs. Some of these NPOs have received funding from the NLC based on their still being listed by the DSD.

By Raymond Joseph and Kaizer Nengovhela

A school in Vuwani in Limpopo that was rebuilt less than two years ago with a R28.3-million Lotto grant is falling apart because of structural problems. Nineteen months after the school was opened with great fanfare, parts of the buildings are unsafe to use as they have developed cracks and other serious structural problems. At least a third of the new classrooms and part of the administration centre have been cordoned off with tape to block access to unsafe areas. Makeshift lintels supported by wooden poles have been erected to support sections of the building that are in danger of collapsing. Cement is falling out between bricks and many of the classrooms have developed cracks in their walls. Students say they feel unsafe and some are experiencing respiratory problems because of dust from the walls and ceilings in some classrooms still in use. Questions are now being asked as to why a non-profit organisation, run by a Limpopo boxing promoter with no experience or track record in the building or construction industry, was chosen as a recipient of the multimillion-rand grant. It also appears that the National Lotteries Commission failed to do due diligence when Simba was appointed to oversee the multimillion-rand project, and during the building of the school. The official handover of the new Vhafamadi High School took place in December 2016. Dignitaries attending the function included Ishmael Kgetjepe, Limpopo’s Education MEC, and Lottery Chairperson Alfred Nevhutanda. Traditional leaders, community members and learners also attended the opening. The school was destroyed in a fire during violent protest actions the year before. The violence, which began in

2015 and continued into 2016, left about 30 schools totally or partly destroyed, affecting more than 50 000 learners. Protestors were against the incorporation of several municipalities to form the new Collins Chabane municipality. The multimillion-rand Lottery grant was used to construct 20 new classrooms, a library, a computer lab, a science laboratory, a kitchen and a school hall at Vhafamadi High, according to the 2017-2018 Annual Performance Plan of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

The NLC is, at the best of times, not the most transparent of institutions. It routinely refuses to make specific information available about funded projects and the organisations involved in them. When members of the media resort to requesting the information under the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) legislation, these requests are denied by the NLC for a variety of reasons, including the need to protect the privacy of people involved in Lottery-funded projects. During our investigation into the school-building project, information about SCDF was obtained via the records filed at the NPO Directorate. When contacted for comment, SCDF chairperson Azwindini Simba said he had no knowledge about the construction work done at the school. “I know

Who received the money? When the school buildings were handed over, the NLC released a statement saying that it had been approached with a request to help fund the rebuilding of the school. The assistance was approved according to the NLC’s “proactive funding” model. This allows the NLC Board to identify needs in communities and allocate funding to address them. The funds to rebuild the school were channelled through Simba Community Develop (sic) Foundation (SCDF), an NPO run by Limpopo boxing promoter Azwinndini Simba, who has no experience in the building industry or in handling big projects. Nevertheless, the NLC appointed Simba as the “implementing agent” responsible for hiring contractors and overseeing the “flagship” project. This despite the fact that his NPO is non-compliant in its reporting to the Department of Social Development (DSD). Documents made available by the DSD show that SCDF was issued with “non-compliance notices” in 2015 and again in 2016, after it failed to submit financial statements and to meet other statuary reporting criteria. The non-profit organisation was warned in 2015 and in 2016 that failure to submit the necessary documentation and rectify some issues would result in its deregistration

SCDF chairperson Azwindini Simba said he had no knowledge about the construction work done at the school.

nothing about what is going on at the school. My only role was to produce the [NPO] document for that project to assist them to get funding from the Lottery. I know nothing else … I know nothing about any problems at the school. The only time I visited the school was when I attended the opening. I never went there at all while it was being built.” Simba said a committee had been elected to oversee the project and to appoint contractors to oversee the building of the school. He declined to name the company that built the school. Instead, he referred inquiries to a man he would only identify as “Tshisimba”, who he said was “directly involved” and had attended meetings with the NLC to discuss the structural problems at the school. In a brief telephonic interview, “Tshisimba” - who claimed his name was actually “Simba” – said: “Are you sure there is a problem at the school?” When he was told that reporters had visited the school and had also taken photos of the damage, he then changed tack and said: “The Lottery did not fund the parts where there are problems”. He said there had been insufficient funds to build the school and “our company funded parts of it.” Told that the NLC had claimed to be the sole funder of the project, “Tshisimba” said: “The Lottery Makeshift lintels supported by wooden poles have been erected to support has not given you the right information.” The NLC said it was “unaware” of sections of the building that are in danger of collapsing.

any other “funding or funders” involved in the project. “Tshisimba” said that his company would only comment at a face-to-face meeting at their offices in Johannesburg. He added that “my MD will call you” but refused to name the company or the managing director and would not supply phone numbers for either. Pressed further, he abruptly hung up. A while later, “Tshisimba” called back to say, “the MD will call you” and hung up again when questioned further. The “MD” never called and further SMSs to him went unanswered.

NLC is aware of the problems The NLC denied that Simba was merely used as a conduit to channel money to other organisations. The legal executive manager of the NLC, Tsietsi Maselwa, said that Simba was “the beneficiary” and was responsible for appointing contractors for the construction of the school. “In terms of NLC funding regulations, only non-profit organisations can be funded, and the subsequent contracting of companies becomes the responsibly of the funded NPO, and therefore the money could not have been paid directly to the contractor/ company that would have been engaged in the work,” he said. Tsietsi acknowledged that the NLC was made aware of problems at the school buildings. “The NLC … subsequently appointed an engineering company which has assessed the extent of the challenges and compiled a report for consideration by the NLC. Upon assessment of the report, the NLC has engaged the implementing agent and outlined corrective measures to be implemented. The NLC is currently undertaking monitoring and evaluation processes in line with its funding policies.” But Simba said that while he was aware that a meeting had been held at the school with representatives of the NLC, he had not attended it and was unaware of the discussions that had taken place. He had also not been contacted by the NLC. This is not the first time that the NLC has been questioned about implementing proper monitoring systems. Earlier this year, the NLC’s CFO Philemon Letwaba explained that the NLC did not get involved in the implementation of funded projects. “However, we provide any support necessary to ensure that the beneficiary is well capacitated to deliver on the project; this is required by the regulations and the Act. It is the responsibility of the NPO to ensure the appointment of adequately competent service providers to ensure the quality of the work meets the standards. [The] NLC has a team of engineers who gives report on the quality of the work done on all our infrastructure-funded projects. The NLC has monitoring and evaluation which monitor the implementation of such projects.”

itching. Parents say they have pleaded with the Department of Education to fix the school, but their appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Parent Mercy Mugovhani said parents were worried about the safety of their children. “There was no greater joy for the parents than witnessing the construction of the new school building in 2016, but now it’s a nightmare.” Mugovhani said she was “disappointed” that, even though the school had received more than R28-million from the Lottery, the contractors had done a shoddy job. “We had hoped our school would be rebuilt properly. We’re not saying we want a new school, but we would be happy if they fix the cracks and renovate the buildings,” she said. “We fear for the safety of the learners because the buildings could collapse on top of them. We are also worried because the conditions at school are not conducive to learning. In some classes, there are walls that are cracked and could collapse at any time. This disturbs the learners, especially when it is rainy,” Mugovhani added. A teacher at the school, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being victimised, said the crumbling infrastructure was a barrier to teaching and learning. “On rainy days we can hardly teach because the learners cannot focus. It can’t be that we only act when something bad has happened. It’s not like the department didn’t know about it before,” he said. A learner, who also asked to remain anonymous as she also feared victimisation, said, “We go to the toilets in groups because it’s so dangerous”. Provincial education spokesperson Sam Makondo said that the department was engaging with different structures to try and resolve the issue. Local traditional leader Thovhele Vho-Thavha Mashau said that he had received a report from community members about the problems at the school. He said that the school or SGB should report such problems to him, in his capacity as the traditional leader of the community. He said that he would visit the school himself to find out what was happening, adding that learners must be taught in a healthy environment with safe classrooms. Mashau-Magweni Civic Association’s secretary, Ms Polinah Malemela, said that they had not received any reports about problems at the school. She said that if the classes were damaged, the contractor must rebuild the school, “because he is the one who built it and was paid”.

“It can collapse at any time” Parents and learners are concerned that the school “could collapse at any time”. They blame poor work by contractors and say the damage must be properly repaired. Learners complain that dust from the cracks often falls on them in some The entrance to the administration block needs to be classrooms still in use, supported by wooden poles to stop the bricks from causing uncomfortable falling down.

On Sunday, 30 September, more than 120 000 “classic” bikers in over 650 countries took part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR). This is a worldwide campaign whereby riders of classic and vintage-style motorcycles dress up to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and men’s mental health. The DGR was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa. He was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. In Limpopo, no riders have registered for the campaign, but two local riders decided to try and get things going. Anton van Zyl (left) on a 1960 BMW R50 and Roger de Troch on a 1934 FN drove to Adam’s Apple Hotel on Sunday afternoon. For next year, the plan is to get a group of riders together and fully support the project. Photo: Mark Archer.

He thanked all his supporters. “I think success comes from what you want in life. The most important thing is to be very disciplined and be very humble and listen to your parents and your coach. The competition was tough, but I was well prepared. What I like about this competition is that, once you complete your race, you feel like you are on top of the world,” Sibanda said. During the prize-giving ceremony, the mayor of Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, extended her congratulations to the participants. She added that they were working hard to ensure that next year’s race would be even bigger. The event, which is jointly organised by the Beit Bridge Rural District Council, Beit Bridge Municipality and Musina Municipality, celebrated its 14th anniversary this year.

gional final proved to be a great end to the regional leg of the league, with perfect weather and unparalleled excitement from participating riders and the crowd. He added that a record number of 345 high school riders pedalled off from the starting line at Ellisras High School for the final league race, the Tour de Maroela. “Beautiful hot and sunny weather greeted us on race day, with a great turnout from riders and spectators. The track was awesome and punchy, with some great obstacles along the way,” he said. Van Dijkhorst said a total of 1 324 riders participated in the regional league of this action-packed season and covered a total of 515.1 kilometres, which he adds is further than Johannesburg to Durban. “We had a wonderful season and we’re so excited to make our way to the inter-schools final in Magaliesburg. It’s going to be an exciting event and we can’t wait to see our riders perform well there,” he said. The Limpopo schools making their way to the inter-schools final are Louis Trichardt High School, who finished top of the log, Stanford Lake College, who came in at second place, followed by PHS in third place and Merensky High School in fourth place. The inter-schools final will take place on Friday, 5 October, while the inter-provincial final will be decided on Saturday, 6 October. As winning school, Triegies qualified to enter a 12-rider team for the national finals. The team consists of riders Richard Lambert, Jennavieve Truter, Christelle Coetzer, Eliz-Mari Pretorius, Rohan Cronjé, Calvin Lee, De Wet du Toit, Ditau Mandobe, Danelle Steyn, Vossie van Zyl, Dominique Nel and Michelle Steyn. During last year’s school’s final at Bekker, the Triegies girls’ team caused a stir by finishing fourth overall in the country out of 55 teams.
