Crash claims second girl By Andries van Zyl

A second pupil from Eric Louw High School in Musina has died, following the horror crash last Thursday afternoon involving the school’s first girls hockey team. The 16-year-old Zanelle Breedt died during the early hours of Tuesday morning, 3 April. She sustained severe head injuries during the crash and never regained consciousness. Fellow teammate Isabel du Plessis (17), was airlifted by medical helicopter shortly after the accident, but passed away en route to the hospital. Zanelle and Isabel, together with

fellow teammates from the school’s first girls hockey team and teachers Ms Carita Vorster and Ms Lerina Opperman, were on their way to Groblersdal for a hockey clinic. The pupils were travelling in two of the school’s minibuses and a sedan. According to information available, the accident occurred at about 15:30 when the bus in which the girls were travelling overtook a slowmoving vehicle on the Lebowakgomo road some 50km from Polokwane. When they were right next to the slow-moving vehicle, it apparently drifted over to their side of the road. (Contd on P2)

(Contd from P1) In an effort to avoid a crash, the teacher driving the minibus, Ms Vorster, swerved, with the vehicle hitting an embankment next to the road. The minibus was thrown back onto the road, spinning out of control and capsizing. All but three passengers of the minibus were apparently flung from the vehicle. At the time of going to press, another two of Zanelle and Isabel’s teammates, Anandie Oosthuizen (17) and Rona-Lee Johansen (18), were still being treated in the Medi-Clinic in Polokwane. Both Anandie and Rona-Lee were left paralyzed after the accident, due to severe neck and back injuries. Shortly after the accident, Anandie had to undergo a seven-hour operation

to remove and replace a neck vertebra. Rona-Lee Johansen also sustained serious injuries from her fifth to her 11th spinal vertebrae. According to family members, both Anandie and Rona-Lee are showing remarkable signs of recovery, although they are still paralyzed. The two are sharing a room at the Medi-Clinic. RonaLee’s mother, Ms Nelie Carstens, said on Tuesday that her daughter was scheduled for another operation that afternoon to repair her broken right arm. “We are waiting for the swelling in her back to subside. The vertebra that pinned her spinal cord has relaxed and fortunately her spinal cord was not damaged,” Carstens said. She added that her daughter also showed signs that the

feeling in her lower body was returning. “These are all very positive signs,” said Carstens. Anandie and Rona-Lee were scheduled to be transferred to the Muelmed Hospital in Pretoria for further specialist treatment. Vorster and Opperman, together with three other girls, Clara Beckman, Siniciwe Ncube and Modeline Sitauze, have since been discharged from hospital, following the accident. In the meantime, the school has started a support fund for the injured children to help pay for their medical expenses. All contributions are welcomed. The account is in the name of Eric Louw High School, at ABSA Bank, with cheque account number 2050390058. The reference is “Ongeluksfonds”.

So het me. Vanessa Dunhil vertel oor haar 32-jarige broer, mnr.

Hy is onderweg dood verklaar.

Foto verskaf.

Leach’s new book sparks huge interest

The launch of the book The Legend of Breaker Morant is DEAD and BURIED by Charles Leach (middle) took place on 31 March at the Lalapanzi Hotel. With him are his spouse, Bev Leach (left) and Laura van Zyl, responsible for the design and layout, to whom the first copy was presented.

Prof Malie Smuts (left), the granddaughter of Rev CAD Heese, one of the murder victims, attended the launch of Charles Leach’s The Legend of Breaker Morant is DEAD and BURIED.

Let us spread the word for you!

The long-awaited book on the controversial events that occurred towards the end of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) in the remote northern part of South Africa, has seen the light. Well-known local historian and author Charles Leach finally released his book, titled The Legend of Breaker Morant is DEAD and BURIED. Harry Harbord ‘The Breaker’ Morant was the commander of ‘A’ Squadron of the Bushveldt Carbineers, a predominantly Australian regiment of the British army. Morant vowed revenge when his best friend, Captain Percy Hunt, was killed in August 1901. What followed was “a series of callous murders and trumped up accusations – leading to arrests, court marshalls, and executions, the result of which still reverberates today,” writes Leach. The book brought to light that no fewer than 35 known murders had been committed. The objective of the book is to expose “the premeditated murder of unarmed, sick and captured prisoners, witnesses, civilians and children.” Lieutenants Morant and Handcock were executed before a firing squad in February 1902. This incident, “despite having occurred some 100 years ago, is alive and well and has certain proponents in Australia launching appeals to the British government to have Morant and Handcock pardoned for murder – the most recent appeal having been in 2011,” says Leach. Professor Louis Changuion is of the opinion that this book may well change the minds of some who might be supporting the “pardon” effort. Leach’s book may be the last word on the Breaker Morant debate and the matter might be laid to rest. “Either that, or the book might provoke the opposite - it might lead to a completely new debate. I wait with interest to see what the reaction will be,“ Changuion said at the launch on 31 March at the Lalapanzi Hotel. Changuion declared Leach as having become the authority in the world on the Breaker Morant episode. “Many self-acclaimed experts on the Busveldt Carbineers and Breaker Morant have set aside the truth in favour of a popular Australian legend ...

After the formal function, author Charles Leach was occupied for a long time by writing personal messages for those who requested him to write in their pre-autographed books. The function was attended by close to 300 people.

your disciplined research, along with the fact that your family have lived in the area for generations, make you a unique fountain of knowledge. Even those who disagree with you, acknowledge and respect your knowledge,” states a letter by Andries Pretorius, living in Australia. SANParks applauded Leach on his publication that will promote tourism and heritage, since many of the events and atrocities took place in and around the areas that are current national parks (Mapungubwe and Kruger National Park). “It is also of significance that the heritage in the rural areas of our country is ... protected and this important publication will further elevate the need for this to be preserved for current and future generations,” Joep Stevens said on behalf of South African National Parks. SANParks, as well as many other speakers, acknowledged Leach’s contribution as tour guide of the Zoutpansberg Skirmishes tours which, to date, has seen more than 4 000 tourists of varied nationalities. Part of the function had a military flavour. Doug Connell explained the symbolic meaning of the ceremonial stand that he had made for the occasion. The canon shell ‘gong’ was hit by a ‘gong’ striker made from a piece of warthog tusk found in the Soutpansberg. Various uniformed people and descendants of the murder victims struck the ‘gong’ and toasted, while a candle in remembrance of the fallen burnt. The close to 300 guests indicated the interest that many people had in Leach’s research and book. Leach acknowledged more than a hundred people who were part of a concerted effort to make the “true South African story” known. The book is dedicated to Leach’s supporting spouse, Bev. The design and layout were done by Laura van Zyl.

Part of the book launch had a military flavour. Here Doug Connell explained the symbolic meaning of the ceremonial stand that he had made for the occasion.

Young pastor launches his first book

Marcel van Niekerk (25), a former student of Soutpansberg Primary School and Louis Trich ardt High School, has published his first book. Pastor Marcel van Niekerk is one of the pastors at the Agapé Christian Centre. He looks up to his father and senior pastor of the church, Pastor Sampie van Niekerk, as his spiritual leader. The title of the book is The Space Between Us. “We were never created to take life on singlehandedly, but unfortunately, our inability to grow intimate with God has left us flying solo. The space between us and God leaves us in a desolate place where we succumb to loneliness and frustration. We are part of a company of modern-day Christians who believe in a disconnected God rather than a personal Father,” says the young Van Niekerk. He explains that the Holy Spirit is the one who closes the gap between us and the Father. The Holy Spirit works in a person to accept Jesus Christ, who opens the way to the Father The book endeavours to clarify the role that the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of Christians and “eradicate the mysterious shadow that has veiled

the Holy Spirit for many generations.” “I chose this topic because it is very relevant in my life and the lives of others right now. Though I completed the book in a short period of time, it flows from my walk with God and living experience of Him over the past 21 years,” says Van Niekerk. The book launch will take place on Saturday, 26 May at 18:00 at the Agapé Christian Centre and all are welcome to attend. There will be a formal programme, followed by an opportunity to buy the book at R80. “I already have ideas for a second book!” says Van Niekerk.

Officials prepare for Easter movement South African and Zimbabwe immigration officials at the Beit Bridge border post have started putting mechanisms in place, aimed at decongesting the border post in anticipation of a huge influx of travellers during the Easter holiday period. Zimbabwe’s regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, told Zoutpansberger that they had since held a preliminary inter-border meeting with their South African counterparts and other local key stakeholders. “As we approach the Easter holiday period, we normally get an increased volume of travellers coming from or heading to South Africa, resulting in pressure on our personnel. “We have therefore started working on various strategies to ensure that we speed up the clearance of travellers during that period. We held a meeting with South African immigration officials and other stakeholders, so that we harmonize our operations and are able to jointly coordinate the implementation

of our plans. Congestion on our side has a direct link with what would be happening on the South African side as well,” he said. Gwede said as part of the decongestion strategy, commercial vehicles and buses would be cleared according to their sequence of arrival at the border to avoid unnecessary congestion, adding that more counters would be created to ease cthe situation. “As part of our decongestion drive, we have collapsed our shifts from four to three, so that we have more officers per shift to manage the queues and speed up the clearance process,” he said. Gwede said they had since deployed more officers to help beef up the existing staff. “We have also suspended leave days for our staff up to 16 April, taking into account that they would be school holidays in Zimbabwe and South Africa, hence an increase in the number of travellers on both entry and exit side. We will, however, continue to adjust our shifts, depending on the movement as we monitor the

situation,” he said. Gwede said all our checkpoints both on the exit and entry side would be adequately manned to enhance security at the border. The local police spokesperson, Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo, said they had since deployed more officers at the border to enhance security. “We have tightened security at the border and more officers have been deployed at all strategic points, so that we curb crime during the Easter holiday. We want to ensure that criminals who normally capitalize on the commotion during the peak to rob travellers have no access to the border area,” he said. Chinhengo said they had also intensified patrols along the major highways to clamp down on robbers targeting mostly foreign motorists. “We are aware that criminals have a tendency of wanting to cash in on the increase in the volume of traffic at the border. They go to the highways and waylay motorists, hence we have intensified our patrols along highways.”

Apart from its new look, the Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zoutpansberger.co.za) offers readers a new calendar entry service on their Events Page. Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process first.

CALENDAR / WHAT’S ON? KALENDER / WAT GEBEUR? (Contd from P8) This is galaxy time, with the constellation of Orion slipping below the horison in the west. On the opposite side of the sky, two constellations that are galaxy-packed, Leo and Virgo, have made their appearance, as have the galaxies within them, which are well placed for observation. Favourite targets for small telescopes are M95 in Leo, that was host to a recent nova a few weeks ago and the Sombrero Galaxy (M104) in Virgo. The light that has reached our eyes from some of these deep-sky objects has been travelling through space for 38 million years. Braai packs, refreshments and amenities are available. MAKHADO CARE GROUP IS A NON PROFIT ORGANISATION WHICH ASSISTS WITH THE CARE OF CANCER PATIENTS

BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the rapid uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both breasts. It is the most common type of cancer in women, but can be cured if found early CAUSES OF SKIN CANCER: - The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown. - Some women with breast cancer have genetic mutations of some genes. - The risk for breast cancer is higher if a member of your immediate family has breast cancer. - Increased estrogen and age also seem to increase risk. - Some women with breast cancer, however, don’t have any of these risk factors. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SKIN CANCER - The most common sign of breast cancer is a painless lump in the breast. - Early detection of breast cancer is done by mammogram, often before a lump can be felt. - Advanced breast cancer may cause thickening in the breast or arm pit. - Change in size or shape of the breast. - Change in skin appearance of the breast e.g. dimpling/orange peel effect. - Change in the nipple e.g. nipple turns in, discharge, bleeding or change in skin. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: - Breast self examination is very important for the early detection of breast cancer.

- The doctor may send you for a mammogram or sonar. - The doctor may take a fine needle aspiartion of the lump where a needle is inserted into the lump and cells are drawn into a syringe. This will be sent to a laboratory for investigation. - Factors that will determine the course of treatment include size of cancer, whether it has spread to lymph nodes, whether the cancer is sensitive to hormone treatment, your age, the grade of cancer. - Treatment options are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or a combination. PREVENTION - Regular self examination. - Preventing weight gain after menopause by healthy diet and exercise. - Studies have shown that women in populations with high-fat diets are more likely to die of breast cancer, though it is not proven that a low-fat diet decreases risk. - Responsible alcohol consumption. - Women that have had children and breastfed have a decreased risk for breast cancer.

Yet research has shown that safely and relaxed. (Issued by Goodyear SA) badly maintained vehicles and fatigued drivers are two of the biggest causes of accidents over the festive season. Many people still rush off straight from work to their holiday destination. In their rush to leave, they often skimp on checking and preparing their vehicles adequately for the journey. Not surprisingly, this is often reflected in problems experienced during the departure trip. Estimates suggest that fatigue is a factor in up to 30% of fatal crashes and 15% of serious-injury crashes. “A safe, relaxed journey begins by having your vehicle – car, caravan or trailer – checked and well maintained before you depart,” says Lize Hayward, the Goodyear Group’s public relations manager. Driving, whether it’s a journey of 500 kilometres or it involves a long trek of over 1000 kilometres, brings its own set of challenges: high volumes of traffic, long distances and the combination of dayand night-time driving can test a driver’s limits. Research shows that many drivers still underestimate the effect of fatigue, drowsiness and decreasing alertness on their driving abilities. “Driving to one’s holiday destination is not at all like the driving we do daily between home, work and social commitments. Going on a long motoring journey brings its own set of challenges that we need to take into consideration,” says Hayward. “Unfamiliar roads, long hours behind the wheel, day- and night-time driving coupled with a family A well-known resident of the Soutpansbergimpatient to get to its destination do not constitute area, Mr Jimmy James, passed away after a short illness last Tuesday. The Way, the Truth and the Life

Holiness - Romans 6:6-14

H

ow can a weak human sinner having been born in sin and lived in sin, living in a wicked world and daily exposed to fierce and subtle temptations, ever aspire to being a holy person, living a holy life? Another question. Will the Allmighty, All-wise, All-living God demand that we should be holy in heart and life when He knows that it is impossible? Verse 6 contains a threefold declaration, and upon these we will focus our thoughts. 1) The declaration of an accomplishment. “That our old man is crucified with Him.” This happened on the first Good Friday at Calvary. This is a fact that cannot be disputed. Paul confidently says: “Knowing this. It is a fact that we must accept by faith, the same way we accepted Jesus as our Saviour. It is a fact that fits our deepest needs.” 2) The declaration of a definite purpose. “That the body of sin must be done away with.” Our old self was crucified there with Christ that the body of sin might be destroyed here. What was done for me then must be done in me now. 3) The declaration of an achieved result. “That we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Freedom from the slavery of sin. Jesus said he who commits sin is the slave of sin, and he whom the Son sets free is free indeed. In Romans 6:1011 Paul tells us Jesus died unto sin once and for all and we are to likewise reckon ourselves to be dead indeed into sin and alive unto God. “But now having been set free from sin ... you have your fruit to holiness” - Rom 6:22. - 079 5168303

Man charged with illegal elephant hunt A 54-year-old man from the Alldays area ap hunting of an elephant. peared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Steven Barber from the farm Weltevreden, Monday in connection with the alleged illegal situated in the Alldays district, was charged with the hunting of wild or alien animals. The charge against him relates to an incident during August 2006 on his farm. According to the information provided, Barber played host to Spanish hunters on the farm. During the visit, an elephant hunt was arranged for the hunters. Barber, who allegedly does not have any ele phants on his farm, arranged that an elephant from the neighbouring farm Kruidfontein would be lured to his farm. He supposedly placed a load of oranges close to the bordering fence inside of Weltevreden. The elephant was then chased through the fence with the help of a helicopter and hunted. Barber was only arrested in June 2011, following an investigation by the Limpopo Department of Environmental Affairs, which received a tip-off from an informant. Since then, Barber has appeared in court numerous times. During Monday’s appearance, his defence council asked the State for further particulars to prepare its case. Barber and his legal representatives were reprimanded by the court over their apparent lack of communication when it was revealed that there was an outstanding bench warrant for Barber’s arrest. The warrant was issued when Barber failed to apThe MEC for Education, Mr Dickson pear in court in February this year because he was Masemola, has been appointed the acting out of the country. premier, following the vehicle accident After Barber had apologized, the court ordered of Premier Cassel Mathale a week ago. the State to provide his council with further parAccording to a spokesperson for the ticulars in the matter and postponed the case to 4 Office of the Premier, Masemola will act and 5 June for trial. as premier until Easter Monday (9 April).

Motorists have been warned to violate traffic regulations at their own peril this Easter. In a press release, the Department of Roads and Transport in Limpopo states that it will adopt a zero-tolerance attitude to ensure safety on all the roads. “As the province is anticipating high traffic volumes from 5 April, the objective is to make a meaningful contribution towards the achievement of the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety which aims to reduce by 50% the rate of road accident fatalities by 2020 and integrate enforcement tactics with appropriate publicity campaigns,” says the department. High traffic volumes during the Easter weekend on the roads leading to the province are expected as a result of the annual Moria Pilgrimage and holiday makers from neighbouring provinces and countries. “We know from the eNaTIS system that we have a huge number of vehicles (buses, minibuses, trucks) that were not submitted for annual roadworthy tests or on change of ownership. And we also have a significant number of vehicles that have failed to renew the vehicles licenses within the time frame allowed,” says the

department. Limpopo also has a significant number of bus, taxi and truck drivers who are on the road with expired professional driving permits. The total vehicle population on the province’s roads is 549 858, with 530 871 being licenced and 18 987 being unlicensed. In total, 4 550 buses and 19 287 taxis use our roads. “From 1 January to mid-March this year, during our daily law enforcement operations, we have discontinued 868 and impounded 313 unroadworthy vehicles. We have arrested 29 drivers for possessing false documentation and fraudulent operating licences and permits. We will continue with these daily operations during and beyond Easter, closing the net on irresponsible and unlawful drivers and owners,” says the department. Since the beginning of this year, 75 people have died in 129 crashes in Limpopo. In December 2011, 74 fatalities and 780 injuries were recorded. During Easter 2011, 25 people lost their lives on the province’s roads, as compared to the 31 recorded fatalities during Easter 2010 (a fatality reduction rate of 19%). During Easter 2008, there were 41 reported fatalities and in

2009, 36 fatalities were recorded. The main contributory factors to accidents during Easter 2011 were speeding, unroadworthy vehicles, motorists’ not maintaining a safe following distance, irresponsible pedestrians, driver fatigue, stray animals and unsafe overtaking. To ensure safety and compliance on the region’s roads with the objective of curtailing crashes, injuries and fatalities, the department will deploy its available resources, and traffic violators will face the full wrath of law enforcement. The province’s 1042 traffic officers and 33 road safety officials will be manning all roads. The department will deploy 378 marked and 136 unmarked traffic police and road safety vehicles on identified priority routes daily, as well as eight patrol vehicles fitted with high-tech moving violation recorders (MVRs) at identified hazardous areas within the province. The top five priority routes are the N1 between Louis Trichardt and Mokopane, the R521 Dendron road, the R71 Tzaneen/ Polokwane road, the R101 Polokwane/Bela-Bela road and the R36 Tzaneen/Lydenburg road.

Committee finally elected for Ward 21 Ward 21 of the Makhado Mu nicipality at last elected a Ward Committee on 20 March. The ward, comprising Tshikota and Louis Trichardt west of the N1, attempted in vain to elect a committee in October last year. The meeting in October was disrupted when the representatives from Tshikota had to be elected. Ward 21 was taken from the ANC in the past election and is a Democratic Alliance ward run by Cllr Brian du Plooy. The following people were elected on the Ward 21 Committee: Aretha Smit, N E Rasilavhi, Martha Babadu (Louis Trichardt), Phillemon Maphari (Waterpoort), SS Mathidi (Padkamp), Azwi Ramalamula (Kavhambe) and a representative from Songozwi (traditional leader). “During last Tuesday’s meeting, there was once again a disruption of the meeting when the three representatives from Tshikota had to be elected. The meeting was disrupted by a

certain group of people who did exactly the same at the October meeting,” Du Plooy said on 27 March. Du Plooy said that the meeting was well attended by residents of Tshikota, but not as well attended by residents of Louis Trichardt. The chairperson of the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association, Ms Inga Gilfillan, expressed her disappointment that not enough of the association’s members turned up for the election. “This is not good. We missed our second representative by a couple of votes,” Gilfillan said. The SRPA manager, Ms Smit, was elected on the Ward Committee. “In theory, a ward committee is the right thing. But in practice, the residents get tired and overworked since they have to spend too many hours of their time on issues that are the responsibility of municipal officials and fulltime councillors. It is not fair that residents have to be con-

fronted minute by minute with a lack of water or dirty water, poorly maintained roads, lack of electricity, sewerage spills, destruction in the graveyard, poor administration, tender corruption and poor management of projects. If officials are not able to fulfil their functions, let them step down and be replaced by skilled people who can get the job done,” Gilfillan said. In a meeting with Wards 20 and 21 on 15 March, the mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Lerule, stressed the importance of the ward committees that work closely with the ward councillors to represent the interests of the ward. The ward councillor should bring issues to the office of the Speaker to capture it in the IDP where applicable. Du Plooy will announce at a later stage how the representation of Tshikota will be implemented.

om 14:00 by hul klubhuis by die gimnasium by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt.
