Love your pets, but try and stay clear of worms By Jo Robinson
soil. When children are a little older, they play in gardens and other outdoor areas. “Parasites and worms are easily picked up this way via mouth, nose, or skin,” he said. Pets are also very effective hosts for these critters, and all of us who live in close proximity to them are fair game as far as these unwanted passengers go. Many owners regularly deworm their pets, but never their children or themselves, thinking that keeping their animals free of parasites is enough to keep them all safe. Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are with your family and home, not everyone else wherever you happen to go during your day-to-day activities will also be. “Schools are notorious for the spreading of all sorts of things,” said Klopper. He urged the public to go and seek medical attention if they suspect that they or any members of their family have been infected with worms. The WHO recommend the drugs Albendazole 400 mg and Mebendazole 500 mg as “effective, inexpensive and easy to administer by non-medical personnel (e.g. teachers). They have been through extensive safety testing and have been used in millions of people with few and minor side-effects.” We asked local pharmacist Mr Louis van den Heever for the best preventative treatments. “It is best to take the three-day course, as prescribed, twice per annum, although not for children younger than two years old … For adults who aren’t willing to take the three-day course for any reason, there is also a single dose available, so it is not at all difficult to do,” said Van den Heever. Quite a lot of mostly unseen parasites are around us, in us, and on us. A disturbing thought to some, but not all of them are harmful to humans; some are actually beneficial. “Mainly we should be concerned with roundworms and flatworms,” said Van den Heever. They are so named for their shape. They all have different methods of reproduction, and some can end up in surprising parts of the human anatomy and cause severe trauma to their hosts, both physically and mentally, so this is definitely not a part of your family’s health that you should avoid looking into. A few tips given by those interviewed to lessen the possibility of infection are firstly to make sure that the water you drink is clean. Secondly, wash foods that you are going to consume raw very well. Thirdly, wash your hands after touching anything that could possibly be a source, such as a pet. Certain parasites use various modes of travel during their cycles, such as animal fur or saliva. Lastly, wear shoes in outside spaces that could host these pests as some parasites can and definitely do enter their hosts through the skin of their feet.
“Your child has worms!” This is probably one of the scariest things you can tell a parent. Perhaps, if you want to create more panic, you can add “And you have worms too!” Ironically enough, this is not a strange occurrence in the Soutpansberg. Whether the term “worms” refers to threadworms, roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms or hookworms, we have to deal with the problem. Just the thought of the squirmy little (or sometimes not) creatures infesting one’s body is enough to cause nightmares for years to come, but they live among us and we have to try and avoid them. You can love your dog, but kissing them is not always a good idea as that is exactly how parasites It may not be commonly known, but doctors do end up in the owner’s body. recommend preventative deworming in humans. Every single local health professional the newspaper queried in town agreed on the dosage and time frame. Dr N Makatu, who specialises in occupational medicine, recommended a twice-per-annum preventative deworming for families, as did Dr G E op sowat R180 000.
Rambau then appealed to the Constitutional Court, which also dismissed this same application. With all his options exhausted, Rambau was forced to return to the Messina Regional Court to stand trial. He then argued that the case against him was nothing more than bogus charges brought against him by agents within the South African Police Service and the National Prosecuting Authority who had plotted against him. Judgment On Thursday, 28 June, Regional Court Magistrate Patterson convicted Lubisi of all four counts (three counts relating to the events of 5 February 2010 and one count relating to his being in a corrupt relationship with his co-accused for the period 1 January 2008 to 5 February 2010). Willemse was convicted of the two charges that related to the events of 5 February 2010 and on the alternative count to the period charge, namely that he had conspired with his co-accused to commit corruption in contravention of Section 21(b) of the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act 12 of 2004. Rambau was convicted on two counts (one relating to the events of 5 February 2010 and one relating to the period charge). Postponement of sentencing Following their conviction, the court postponed sentencing to 23 to 25 October this year while awaiting pre-sentence reports. All three’s bail was extended until that time.
In what can only be described as a marathon court case, the State finally walked away with a conviction against three high-ranking lawmen of Musina last week. For the past eight years, the State has pulled out all the stops to secure a guilty conviction against former senior regional magistrate Tshirufho Ronnie Rambau (58), regional court prosecutor Estene Anver Willemse (42) and attorney Tivoneleni Edmond Lubisi (38). Background According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), members of the police’s Counter-Intelligence Unit in Pretoria applied for and were granted authority in terms of section 252A of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 for the setting of a trap to investigate the suspicion of corrupt activities at the Musina Regional Court. This was based on information received from informers. The authorisation was granted, and it was arranged that a deep-cover agent be arrested on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. After the arrest of the deep-cover agent, a second agent approached Lubisi to act as the deep-cover agent’s attorney. The deep-cover agent was released on bail shortly hereafter. During the days that followed, several conversations and meetings were held between Lubisi and the two agents. They were informed that the matter could be placed before a specific magistrate (which turned out to be Rambau) and that a pre-arranged sentence could be imposed in court, against payment of a certain amount of money to all the role players. The NPA stated that, in total, R27 000 was paid over by the agents to Lubisi. The deep-cover agent again appeared in the Regional Court at Musina on 5 February 2010 and was convicted and sentenced to the pre-arranged sentence. Lubisi was the attorney on record, Willemse was the prosecutor and Rambau was the Regional Court magistrate. Following the court appearance of the deep-cover agent, the three accused were arrested. The charges Following their arrest, Rambau, Lubisi and Willemse were charged with the contravention of various sections of the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act 12 of 2004. The charges related to the corruption that took place on 5 February 2010. In addition, each was charged with being in a corrupt relationship for the period between 1 January 2008 and 5 February 2010. Lubisi faced four charges of corruption, Willemse three charges and Rambau two charges. The respective charges alleged that the accused’s corrupt activities were aimed at Rambau’s passing pre-arranged sentences. Cat and mouse Since their arrest, Rambau and his co-accused tried every trick in the book to have the case against them get thrown out. They brought several applications to this end, which saw the case dragging on for years. First the three brought an application to have the criminal cases against them dismissed in October 2012 as they claimed that the State’s evidence and witnesses were lacking in credibility. When this application was dismissed, Rambau himself brought an application that the presiding officer in the case, Magistrate E K Patterson, should withdraw from the case as “he had befriended some of the state witnesses” and that this friendship could influence the outcome of the case negatively for Rambau. This application was also dismissed and Rambau then turned to both the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeals, who also dismissed his application
A Thohoyandou-based legal practitioner caused major havoc in the High Court after it was ruled that he had acted as an attorney since 2011 without the necessary certificates in place. This may mean that the outcome of dozens of court cases can now be challenged, and trials will have to restart. In a circular sent out last week, Limpopo Judge President Ephraim Makgoba called on other legal practitioners not to “jump the gun” and try and challenge court cases but to wait for the Supreme Court of Appeal to rule on the matter. He pointed out that the High Court ruling has serious ramifications, for example in divorce matters, the parties would now stay married to each other. In cases where money has been claimed and execution proceedings have taken place, such transactions may have to be reversed. Even criminal cases where the legal practitioner appeared on behalf of clients may have to be re-opened and trials will have to start afresh. Judge Makgoba said the respondents in the case had filed a petition with the Supreme Court of Appeal. He requested legal practitioners to wait until this court has ruled on the matter before taking any action. The lawyer’s conduct formed the centre of a court case between NW Civil Contractors and Anton Ramaano Inc and the Thohoyandou Sheriff of the Court. The case served in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou and Judge Legodi Phathudi made his ruling on 14 May. The respondents in the original case (dating back to September 2016), Ramaano and the Sheriff of the Court, complained that the applicant (NW Civil Contractors), had been represented by an attorney who, at the time, did not have a Fidelity Fund Certificate issued by the Law Society. Without such a certificate in place, legal practitioners are not allowed to represent clients in court cases. Ramaano and the Sheriff took the matter to the High Court, requesting that the proceedings be declared null and void.

DEL15 REMEMBERING VILLE WOOD
On Sunday, 15 July, a number of wreaths will be laid at the MOTHs Turbi Hills Shellhole in Louis Trichardt to commemorate the battle of Delville Wood and to pay tribute to the South African soldiers who lost their lives during this battle. The Battle of the Somme occurred between 1 July and 18 November 1916 and is described as one of the bloodiest battles in human history. More than one million men were wounded or killed on the banks of the river Somme in France. Among the soldiers killed and injured were more than 2400 South Africans who fought for control over a small piece of land in the northeast of France, called Delville Wood. The ceremony at Turbi Hills Shellhole at 66 Burger Street will start at 10:30 for 11:00. Residents who had family members or close friends who were involved in this battle are welcome to participate in the event. For more information, Alan Odendaal can be contacted at 083 660 2472.

About 130 journalists from more than 80 local newspapers, in all nine provinces, entered this year,” said Fanie Groenewald, the convenor of the judges. He added that the judges’ overall impression was that local newspapers were still very much alive in South Africa. “They are indeed serving their communities very well,” Pictured is the winning team from the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo said Groenewald. were no strangers to the podium once more. In the category for Independent Commercial Newspapers, the Zoutpansberger scooped up a second place, while the Limpopo Mirror was a close third. The overall winner of the category was The Village News from Hermanus. The Zoutpansberger also managed to scoop up third place in the Best Front Page category for Independent Commercial Newspapers. The top award of the evening for both newspapers, however, went to editor and owner Anton van Zyl. He was crowned Investigative Journalist of the Year, a very tough category to clinch. Upon receiving his award, the judges remarked that Anton had gone to great lengths to investigate what had happened to the Lotto money allocated to a Vhembe NGO. “What he uncovered was ‘a tale that included a music festival, dietary training workshops and a system where the real beneficiaries are not always mentioned.’ He also found ‘a system that is as transparent as a toilet window.’ The story had some further developments with documents being leaked to the Zoutpansberger about irregularities within the National Lotteries Commission.” This year, Zoutpansberger colleague Andries van Zyl managed a fourth place in the Investigative Journalist of the Year category. He also scooped up an overall third place in the highly contested Human Interest category, while receiving a Top
10 finish in the Hard News category and the prestigious Journalist of the Year category. The Zoutpansberger’s colleagues from sister publication the Limpopo Mirror also did exceptionally well. Although Andries secured a Top 10 finish in the fiercely contested Hard News category, it was the Mirror’s Elmon Tshikhudo who had outdone the “local competition” this year by receiving an overall third place nationally in this category. Another fellow Limpopo Mirror journalist in the running this year was Tshifhiwa Mukwevho, who also managed an impressive Top 10 position in the Human Interest category. As for the photography categories, former Zoutnet employee Isabel Venter also featured under the top names nationally and made the Zoutnet group of newspapers proud. Her top award for the evening was a well-deserved overall third place in the Photographer of the Year category. She also boasted several Top 10 finishes, including being fifth in the News category, sixth in the Sport category and seventh in the General category. Isabel left the newspaper group in June after accepting a position at Netwerk24 in Gauteng. Overall, the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror did exceptionally well in the competition, with 14 mentions in the different categories. These included podium places and Top 10 nominations.
or “they” have taken our land. Incidents such as the Annapolis shooting again shows us that we are all in the same boat. We are dealing with similar opportunistic and often idiotic “leaders”, and our messengers are under threat. The Annapolis shooting occurred a bit more than a year after president Donald Trump declared that the media are “the enemy of the American people”. The shooter apparently had a grudge with the newspaper, starting before Trump uttered these words, but such irresponsible statements create an environment wherein a growing number of people feel justified to act on their irrational hatred.
Much of the sameness is happening in our country. We have (I wanted to say shitloads full of, but let’s be decent) dozens of politicians who are simply fearmongers, specializing in working up emotions and driving the “us and them” agenda. The one thing that stands in their way is good-quality and objective journalism. It is not the Facebook postings or the Whatsapp messages that will expose them, but the well-researched articles and the real facts. In a brilliant opinion piece published last week, Tim Grobaty of the Long Beach Post writes the following: “…the media is not the enemy of the American people; that’s one of the more dangerous of the lies that are flooding the country today. Rather, the media, especially in the form of small community newspapers, is among the American people’s best friends and vigilant guardians. In little communities all across the country, journalists from small newspapers—mostly weeklies—are the reader’s neighbors. They live where their readers live, shop where their readers shop, share their readers’ concerns… …real news of what’s going on and what’s important in many American neighborhoods still comes from small community newspapers, and many of them are thriving while the major dailies are, to admit to one man’s assessment, failing. To add to the woes is the fact that many politicians see the media as overzealous watchdogs. And they’re right to think so; their fear is warranted, because that’s what the small newspapers do so well: Keep a steady eye on the opportunistic city government, the shady school board, the double-dipping water commissioner. And there’s a direct relationship between a town’s size and its paper: The smaller the city, the more important its paper is to the community.” Tim Grobaty is my hero - for this week at least - because he could not have stated it better. Our communities now, more than ever before, need their small newspapers. These voices are part of the very few things that will help save them from the clutches of the greedy and the corrupt. I truly do not believe we live in a society where people hate each other. You will, of course, get a percentage of racists and crooks. They come in all sizes and shapes and in an assortment of shades. You get good people and you get bad people – and that is it. We live in communities where people are (by a great majority) good people. The role of the journalist in a community is to expose the bad people, but not lose track of the fact that most people are good. As Grobaty said, we live where our readers live, we meet them at the shops, we share their concerns. We can also spot when a politician climbs onto his or her soap box and tells the world that our people are bad people. We know they are not. But, as either Voltaire or Spiderman said, with great power comes great responsibility. I very much doubt if the media have that much power, but they do take on great responsibility. It means that we need to be excellent watchdogs, not just overzealous lapdogs. The journalist should also take heed of the fact that “it takes two to tango”. For every corrupt official, there is someone in the private sector simply too willing to join in the looting of the scarce resources.
The past weekend’s Forum for Community Media’s award event was encouraging. The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s journalists received no fewer than 11 top-10 category mentions. Between the “Limpopo twins” they collected one trophy (best investigative journalism) and two third places (best human-interest reporter and best hard-news reporter). This may not seem very impressive, but take into account that this is one of the very few independent newspaper groups left in the country that is economically self-sustainable. To boast five journalists who receive national acknowledgement out of such a small newsroom takes some doing. Not even the big publishing groups could achieve this. All this means that we are serious about doing what is expected of us. We may not always get it right, but we try really hard. We battle on amidst ever-increasing obstacles, the biggest being the world-wide eroding in revenue models. For centuries, content providers relied on an advertising model to subsidize news. In the last decade the “new kids on the block” such as Facebook and Google have managed to usurp this monetization model, leaving behind only some crumbs for newspapers trying to survive. The local or neighbourhood newspapers managed to survive for longer, but even here the casualties are becoming common. This should be a wake-up call for businesses in deciding where to spend their advertising budget. Spending it on SMSs and buying one or two databases containing thousands of phone numbers and email addresses are attractive options. With the assistance of a mail server, you can spam millions of people. It may be unethical and bordering on illegal, but, so what? It’s cheap! Many ways exist to do cheap marketing, but once you have made that decision, just remember: you are also a resident of the area, dependent on proper service delivery. You are also someone who would want the rule of law to protect citizens against abuse, whether from government or private business. You will also need a watchdog. You may just get what the crooked “leaders” are hoping for.

In Annapolis, Maryland in the USA, five employees of the Capital Gazette were gunned down by a lunatic last week. The shockwaves reverberated through the world, and in newsrooms, whether small or big, journalists were asking themselves the question: “Is it worth it?” We tend to think of our own problems in South Africa as unique. We believe we have the most crooked politicians, that crime is getting out of hand and we simply love to drive the “us and them” agenda. Yes, “they” are taking our jobs, “they” will take our land

Louis Trichardt Memorial “our hospital of shame” By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho
Hospitals are places where people seek comfort, hope, and healing when they are sick – but this becomes an ironic tragedy when their physical pain is compounded by mental anguish because of the bad treatment some apparently get from unsympathetic medical professionals. A resident of Tshirolwe village in the Nzhelele area, Ms Sophie Magadani (65), was recently admitted to LTT Memorial Hospital. According to Magadani’s family, the treatment she got was not what would be expected from such a facility. “She fell off the bed after the nurse failed to lock its wheels, and she was then assisted by another patient after her crying for help fell on deaf ears,” said Magadani’s son, Tshifhiwa Magadani. “I learnt from other patients that while all this was happening, the nurses were sleeping and didn’t want to be disturbed.” He indicated that when tte nurses finally did come over to her bed, they harshly insulted her. Magadani added that the hospital’s x-ray scanner has not worked for a period of three months now and that this is adversely affecting patients. “Even when we visited my mother during her stay in the hospital, the linen on her bed was always dirty. The floor and bedside locker were also not clean, and rotting from decay and negligence,” he said. “An empty, dirty drip bag that had held blood for transfusion lay on the floor long after it was removed from her body, and nobody bothered to dispose of it. We even took some pictures with our mobile phones because we were not happy with the state of the ward she was housed in.” Ms Magadani was eventually discharged. However, she went to LTT Memorial Hospital for a routine check-up on 28 June, but she was turned away on the basis that she was from Nzhelele and
not Louis Trichardt. She was very disappointed by the way everything transpired. “They said that she should go to Siloam Hospital, even though she had been admitted to LLT Memorial and her doctor was based there,” said Magadani. “I feel that this shabby treatment towards our people must come to a stop. While there are very good nurses and doctors there, some are just there to fill up the posts.” He stated that, on that very day, he witnessed a Concerned patients say that the the LLT Memorial Hospital scenario where an elderly man ended up in a tussle treatment. with a nurse after he complained that he couldn’t afford to be turned back twice without receiving any attention. “The seemingly possessed nurse wanted to hit the patient but was restrained by other saving water,” says the departEnvironmental News officials,” he said. “Patients wait for a doctor the ment. whole day, only to be finally turned away because According to the department, With the South African the doctor has not arrived due to other committhe Polokwane Water Supply Weather Service’s forecast ments, even though they are visibly very sick.” showing that Limpopo will not System was at 95.7% last week, “It is reported that 37 000 posts are vacant in be getting enough rain, except showing a slight decline when South Africa’s hospitals, health centres and clinics, for some minor showers in compared to 95.8% the previous and Limpopo tops the list,” he said. “My plea to some regions of the province week, but still in a better state MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba is for her office to in July, the Department of than last year this time, when it consider appointing a task team to have the Hawks Water and Sanitation (DWS) stood at 63.5%. Residents to continue saving water always play their role in saving water as it will affect their crops and animals if the dams were to run dry,” warns the department. The department also cautions that although the provincial storage is at a satisfactory percentage, the province still needs to continue to implement water restrictions, so that reliable water provision is sustained until the next summer rains. “Water is a scarce resource and catalytic towards economic development, and it must therefore be conserved at all times,” says the department’s regional head in Limpopo, Mr Lesiba Tloubatla, in his appeal to the people of the province to continue saving water. “With the climate change affecting the way in which it used to rain in this province, we encourage people to continue saving water. The South African Weather Service forecast shows us that we will not have sufficient rain to fill up our dams, not until the summer seasons hopefully,” concludes Tloubatla.
Amidst the trade war between the USA and China, Green Farms Nut Co decided to spread the risk for local macadamia farmers. Photo supplied.
Green Farms spread risk for farmers amidst US and China trade war Green Farms Nut Co (Green Farms) has issued a statement, following a number of enquiries from their macadamia growers regarding rumours about the Chinese market. According to Green Farms, the issues stemmed from the trade war between the US and China. “Macadamias are extensively exported into China through ‘grey channels’, which are used to avoid high import duties into the country. Due to the ongoing trade and tariff duty conflict between the US and China, Chinese authorities have clamped down on all ‘grey channels’. This is to ensure China’s retaliation tariffs imposed on the US have the intended effect. Unfortunately, macadamias appear to be caught in this crossfire,” reads a media statement by Green Farms. As a result of this, said Green Farms, Chinese (“grey channel”) importers are dialling down their activities this season and are
attempting to delay shipments in the hope that the embargo will pass. This has seen a slight softening of the nut-in-shell price. “The impact of this may play out similarly to 2015, whereby the new Chinese premier intended to demonstrate a clampdown on corruption and so also closed off ‘grey channels’, which resulted in huge contract defaults. In the long term, fundamentally, the Chinese market at a consumer level remains durable; however, it is the route to this market which is compromised,” says Green Farms. For exactly this reason, explained Green Farms, one of their strategic imperatives has always been to ensure they spread their risk in all markets around the globe to ensure they do not leave their growers exposed. “And as such, we planned to only sell 20% of our 2018 nut-in-shell intake to China. Because of this, we feel secure that our growers are not likely to be overly affected by this issue,” says Green Farms.
