‘n Verwoestende veldbrand in die Waterpoort-omgewing het Maandag meer as 4 000 ha se weiding in puin gelê. Dit het vir talle boere wat reeds sukkel met weiding te midde van die heersende droogtetoestand ‘n geweldige nekslag toegedien. Foto’s verskaf.

Te midde van die reeds erge droogtetoestand in die Soutpansberg is boere in die Waterpoort-omgewing die afgelope week ‘n verdere nekslag toegedien toe ‘n verwoestende veldbrand meer as 4 000 ha se weiding in puin gelê het. Die brand het vermoedelik tussen 08:00 en 10:00 Maandagoggend op ‘n plaas sowat 25 km wes van Waterpoort ontstaan, vanwaar dit na vyf buurplase versprei het. Een van die plase het in totaliteit afgebrand. “Gelukkig het daar niks geboue en strukture in die slag gebly nie. Ek dra tans ook geen kennis van enige wild- of veeverliese nie,” het mnr. Rudolph Otto, voorsitter van die Waterpoort Boerevereniging, Woensdag gesê. Grondeienaars, plaasarbeiders en selfs boere vanaf Vivo het hul hande vol gehad om die brand

onder beheer te kry. Otto sê hul werk is veral belemmer deur die sterk wind wat gewaai het. “Die sterk wind het ons die heeltyd op die agtervoet gehad, omdat dit die hele tyd gedwarrel het. Net as jy op ‘n plek begin terugbrand, swaai die wind om en dan spring die vuur weer,” het Otto gesê. Daar is feitlik deurnag gespook om die vuur onder beheer te kry. “Die laaste mense het eers so 03:00 Dinsdagoggend klaargemaak,” het Otto gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat die brand veel erger kon gewees het, was dit nie dat die boere se brandbane in so ‘n goeie toestand was nie. “Dinsdagoggend was daar weer twee opvlammings, maar ons kon dié brande binne ‘n uur onder beheer kry,” het Otto gesê. Otto het genoem dat die moontlikheid bestaan dat die vuur kwaadwillig begin is en dat die polisie die brand ondersoek. Volgens Otto is daar geen twyfel dat die versen-

gende hitte van Maandag en Dinsdag, asook die huidige droogtetoestand, daartoe bygedra het dat die vuur so vinnig versprei het nie. “Ons bid vir goeie reën, asook goeie opvolgreën,” het Otto gesê. Wat die verlies aan weiding betref, sê Otto, is dit hoofsaaklik wildsplase wat deur die brand geraak is. “Vir baie van die plaaseienaars was dit al weiding wat hulle gehad het en sal hulle nou moet begin voer,” het Otto gesê. Die prentjie lyk egter maar sleg vir nie net boere in die Soutpansberg nie, maar vir boere landswyd. Die Staat het reeds aangedui dat geen droogtehulp aan boere gegee sal word nie (sien artikel op p.2). Daar is ook geen korttermyn vooruitsig vir goeie reënneerslae nie, aldus die Suid-Afrikaanse Weerdiens se langtermyn weervoorspelling vir die periode Oktober 2015 tot Februarie 2016. aandui, asook hoër somertemperature. Intussen is waterbeperkings vir Limpopo reeds in September aangekondig. Dit nadat me. Margaret-Ann Diedericks as Direkteur-generaal van die Departement Waterwese en Sanitasie in die Staatskoerant van 2 September aangekondig dat daar sterk gronde is om te glo dat waterskaarste in die provinsie bestaan weens die huidige droogtetoestand. Derhalwe het sy waterbeperkings aangekondig vir die Nzhelele area stroomop van Mutshedsi en die Nzheleledam se opvangsgebied, sowel as die Nwanedzi-, Klein Letaba-, Molototsi- en Tzaneen opvangsgebiede. Talle boere in die streeks het reeds vroeër vanjaar aangedui dat die droogtetoestand krisisafmeting op hul plase aanneem. Van hierdie boere koop reeds voer aan teen groot ekstra koste. In die Levubu-omgewing, soos vroeër berig, het talle standhoudende fonteine en boorgate die afgelope paar maande opgedroog. (Vervolg op p. 2)

Minister se uitlatings laat boere woedend Deur Andries van Zyl

Die drukkersduiwel het verlede week amok gemaak met die Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se prysuitdelingfoto’s. Daar is berig dat beide Daniël Minnie en Bernice Meiring die Kultuurseun en -meisie trofeë ontvang het. Dit was toe eintlik net Bernice wat die trofee vir Beste Kultuurleerling ontvang het. Wat nie genoem is nie, is dat hulle ook die trofeë ontvang het vir die beste akademiese presteerders - Daniël vir die senior fase en Bernice vir die junior fase.

Lugversorgers en waaiers het die afgelope week behoorlik oortyd gewerk in die Soutpansberg-streek, met inwoners wat desperaat gepoog het om af te koel te midde van die versengende hitte. Die hittegolftoestande het genadiglik Dinsdag begin wyk, maar nie alvorens ‘n paar nuwe rekordtemperateure landswyd vir November opgestel is nie. Dit was beslis ‘n week van uiterstes - van maksimum temperateure van oor die 40°C op plekke, terwyl die kwik dieselfte tyd op ander plekke tot onder vriespunt gedaal het en sneeu selfs in Lesotho geval het. Volgens statistiek van die Suid-Afrikaanse Weerburo was Punda Maria die warmste plek in die land op 2 November met ‘n lesing van 43.5°C. Dit was ook ‘n rekordlesing, met die ou rekord van 42.8°C wat vir 38 jaar gestaan het. Op Levubu is die 51-jaar-lange rekord maksimum temperatuurlesing ook verpletter toe die kwik op 2 November tot 42.5°C gestyg het. Die vorige rekordlesing was 41°C. Thohoyandou en Giyani het ook rekord maksi-

mum temperature opgelewer. Die rekord temperatuurlesing van 41°C vir Thohoyandou wat 33 jaar lank gestaan het, is op 2 November gebreek toe die kwik tot 41.1°C gestyg het. Op Giyani het die Weerdiens ‘n rekordlesing van 42.9°C gemeet, met die ou rekord van 40.6°C wat vyf jaar gestaan het. Die nuwe maksimum temperature is hoofsaaklik in die noorde van die land aangeteken. Aan die ander kant van die land was die teendeel egter waar, met talle nuwe minimum temperature vir November weens die kouefront wat oor die land beweeg het. Op 3 November was Sutherland die koudste plek in die land, nadat die kwik tot -2.6°C gedaal het. Nuwe minimum temperature is ook elders opgestel, almal op 3 November. Op Wepener daal die kwik tot 0.8°C (vorige rekord van 16 jaar was 1.7°C), terwyl Bloemfontein 1.9°C meet (vorige rekord van 22 jaar 2.3°C). Welkom en Kroonstad was ook ysig koud, met lesings van onderskeidelik 2.1°C (vorige rekord van 40 jaar was 2.4°C) en 3°C (vorige rekord van 37 jaar was 3.1°C), terwyl Kimberley 1.5°C meet (vorige rekord van 55 jaar 2.5°C) en Ottosdal 3.1°C (vorige rekord van 39 jaar 3.2°C) vir November.

TLU SA is erg ontsteld oor die Minister van Waterwese en Sanitasie, me. Nomvula Mokonyane, se ongeërgdheid oor die krisis wat boere in die huidige droogte in die gesig staar. Volgens TLU SA se president, mnr. Louis Meintjies, is die minister se uitlating Sondag dat boere geen droogtehulp gaan ontvang nie en maar moet leer om aan te pas, uiters arrogant en uittartend. Meintjies het aan die ander kant sy waardering uitgespreek teenoor die Nasionale Raad van Provinsies wat aanbeveel het dat die regering wel droogtehulp aan boere moet gee. TLU SA Noordstreek het reeds in Mei vanjaar ’n beroep op die LUK vir Landbou in Limpopo gedoen om dringend stappe te neem om droogtehulp in te stel. Veral veeboere wat op kommunale grond boer, word erg geraak. “Opkomende en gevestigde tradisionele veeboere se weiding is uitgeput. Daar waar daar nog plek-plek bietjie weiding is, is dit onvoldoende en van lae voedingswaarde. Riviere, spruite, damme en boorgate het opgedroog. Ander boorgate droog een na die ander op. Kort-, medium- en langtermyn weervoorspellings dui daarop dat daar nie binne die afsienbare toekoms goeie reëns gaan wees nie. Die droogte is ook te wyte aan die feit dat daar vanaf verlede seisoen geen weiding ‘oorgedra’ is na die nuwe seisoen nie, aangesien die vorige reënseisoen ook vêr onder gemiddeld was. Die buitengewone hoë temperature het verder ’n versengende invloed,” het TLU SA Noord se streeksbestuur, mnr.

Drickus Botha, gesê. Volgens Botha is kommersiële veeboere en wildboere baie bekommerd oor die droogtetoestande en het reeds begin om kuddes te verminder. “Die swak vleispryse maak dit ook baie moeilik om onder hierdie omstandighede te oorleef. Staatshulp is nou broodnodig om die provinsiale kudde minstens te onderhou. Vleispryse gaan met die komende feesseisoen beslis hoër wees as verlede jaar en sal vir baie verbruikers onbekostigbaar raak,” het Botha gesê. Wat Minister Mokonyane se uitlating betref, het Meintjies gesê dat sy haar moet hou by haar prioriteite, in plaas van opmerkings te maak buite haar portefeulje. Hy sê haar taak is om toe te sien dat daar kwaliteit en bruikbare water is vir die ekologie van die land, vir drinkwater, en vir landbou, sodat daar kos op almal se tafels kan wees. “Sekere water is egter deur haar departement se toedoen al so besoedel en onbruikbaar, dat dit selfs nie eens geskik is vir kragopwekking nie as gevolg van te veel soute daarin,” het Meintjes gesê. Meintjies het gesê boere het klaar aangepas. “Hoe dink die Minister sou hulle dit anders reggekry het om al meer as drie eeue in hierdie land te bly boer? Dalk moet sy in dié opsig ook aandag gee aan die opkomende en bestaansboere. Hoe effektief is hulle watergebruik en tot welke mate het hulle al aangepas?” het Meintjies gesê. Hy het die hoop uitgespreek dat die regering ook sal aanpas, “as hulle besef dat dit die geval sal moet wees as daar nie meer kos nie, en gevolglik ook minder inkomste vir die Staat, gaan wees.”

Brand dien boere ‘n nekslag toe (Vervolg van p. 1) Die sink van nuwe boorgate kom ook teen ‘n prys, en weens verhoogte insetkoste waarsku boere dat verbruikers ‘n verhoging in prys op landbougewasse kan verwag. Wat Maandag se brand in die Waterpoort-omgewing betref, het Otto inwoners wat beskik oor

ekstra weiding of voer versoek om dringend met hom kontak te maak. Hy kan geskakel word by tel. 072 412 2593. Otto het ook elkeen wat by Maandag en Dinsdag se poging betrokke was om die brand by Waterpoort onder beheer te kry, bedank vir hul onbaatsugtige hulp.

Vlamme verswelg huis, maar brandweer daag nie op nie Deur Isabel Venter

Wat vat mens as jou huis in ligte laaie staan en die brandweer daag nie op nie? Jy red jou kinders en diere want “hulle is die heel belangrikste,” sê mev. Corrie van der Horst. Sy het nie net haar kinders en kleinkinders se veiligheid verseker nie, maar het die vlamme aangedurf om haar geliefde budgie, Pietie, te gaan haal. “Ek het hom gekry toe was hy so ‘n babatjie,” beduie sy die grootte met haar hande. Sy staan en speel met die blou-en-geel Pietie deur die traliewerk van sy hokkie, terwyl sy vertel hoe sy en “mense van die community” die huis se voordeur platgeskop het. “Ek het sy hok gevat en toe só met hom uitgeloop,” sê sy terwyl sy haar hemp oor haar mond trek en beduie hoe sy gekeer het dat sy nie versmoor van die digte rookwalms nie. Die Van der Horsts se huis, sowat 20 km buite Louis Trichardt op die Madombidza-pad, is op 26 Oktober gedeeltelik in puin gelê ná ‘n verwoestende brand. Corrie en haar man, Johan, deel die huis met hul seun Johan jnr. en sy vrou Maria, Maria se dogter Dalene en haar man Manie en hulle dogtertjie, klein Corrie. Corrie sê hulle verskeringsmaatskappy is nog besig met die ondersoek, en dat die ondersoeker se voorlopige bevinding is dat die brand ontstaan het in die kombuis. Sy, Dalene, klein Corrie (3) en Rozario (16), Corrie se kleinseun wat daar gekuier het, was alleen by die huis gewees toe die brand ontstaan het. Dit was omstreeks 17:15. Corrie het laaste nog ‘n stukkie wors in die oond gebraai vir aandete. Almal was in hulle eie kamers besig terwyl hulle

gewag het vir Johan en Manie om van die werk af te kom. Klein Corrie het eerste agtergekom daar’s fout en histeries begin skreeu. Die grootmense het die kombuis gekry, verswelg in vlamme. Groot konsternasie het toe losgebars soos wat hulle probeer red het wat hulle kon. Ongelukkig het die vlamme intussen na die dak versprei, en van daar na die res van die huis. Die hele voorste deel van die Van der Horsts se huis het afgebrand. “Hier is baie skade,” het Corrie gesê. Die inhoud van die kombuis, eet- en sitkamer het uitgebrand, en die res van die huis is toe onder die roet. “Ons het nou nie eens meer klere vir die kerk nie,” het Corrie gesê. Sy en Dalene was juis besig om vir die soveelste keer hulle klere en linne te was tydens die Zoutpansberger se besoek by hul huis verlede Donderdag. Wat die Van der Horst-familie egter warm onder die kraag het, is dat hulle teen die einde van laasweek nog steeds gewag het vir hulp van die brandweer. “Vir ons het hulle gesê hulle het nie ‘n voertuig nie,” het ‘n ontstelde Dalene gesê. “En dit was nadat ons hulle aanhoudend probeer bel het en gesukkel het om hulle in die hande te kry,” het sy gesê. Hulp het genadiglik egter van die bure en gemeenskap van Madombidza gekom voor dit te laat was en hulle alles verloor het, het Corrie bygevoeg. Die Makhado Brandweerstasie het by navraag gesê dat hulle was bewus van die voorval, maar dat hulle enigste brandweerwa stukkend staan vanaf September. Die stasie het ook bevestig dat hul benarde

posisie onder die aandag van die Vhembe Distriksmunisipaliteit (VDM), asook die provinsiale departement, gebring is. Verder het die stasie ook bevestig dat hulle die Van der Horsts se klagte ontvang het, maar dat hulle die familie na Lugmagbasis Makhado verwys het vir hulp. By navraag het die VDM egter gesê dat brand- en reddingsdienste nie die provinsiale departemente se verantwoordelikheid is nie, en alleenlik die verantwoordelikheid van die VDM is. “Dit is ons [VDM] mandaat om eiendom en menselewens te beskerm in die geval van ‘n ramp,” het mnr. Ralushai Matodzi, die munisipale woordvoerder, hierdie week in ‘n e-pos gesê. Hy het vrae rondom die herstel van die brandweerwa afgemaak as irrelevant. “In hierdie stadium bespaar die munisipaliteit geld deur voertuie direk na die handelaar te neem, in stede daarvan om ‘n diensverskaffer werkswinkel te gebruik om die herstelwerk te doen,” het Matodzi gesê. “Die munisipaliteit het besluit om in te tree en kostes te besnoei deur die gebruik van konsultante of diensverskaffers te verminder, wat die munisipaliteit die geleentheid sal gee om addisionele voertuie te koop,” het hy nog bygevoeg. Matodzi het gesê dat die VDM bekommerd is oor wat gebeur het met die Van der Horsts, “weens gapings in hulle [brandweer] operasionele werk” en dat die saak ondersoek sal word, sodat so ‘n tragedie in die toekoms verhoed kan word. Intussen moes die Van der Horsts dorp toe trek, sodat hul versekeringsmaatskappy die ondersoek kan afhandel en ‘n besluit kan neem oor wat met hulle huis sal gebeur.

Mev. Corrie van der Horst saam met Pietie, haar liefling budgie wat sy met die hand grootgemaak het. Nadat sy haar kinders en kleinkinders se veiligheid verseker het, het sy aangedring dat omstanders die brandende huis se deur oopskop, sodat sy vir Pietie kon red uit die vlamme.

Rhino poaching war is fast gaining momentum By Isabel Venter

The LRSG’s aerial fighting machine, taking on poachers from the air. The LRSG was started by a group of committed rhino owners in November of 2014. Since then, they have had a reported 82% drop in rhino poaching cases in Limpopo.

Spoor lands poacher 11 years in jail By Isabel Venter

A young man who tried to poach a rhino on a local farm paid for his mistake by being sent to jail for 11 years. In an unusual turn of events the rhino was not killed, a fact that attracted lots of praise for the local K9 unit of the Makhado Police station. The unit played a vital role in not only catching the poacher, but also gathering the evidence that led to his conviction. Prince Talani Maluleke (20) from Mutale was found guilty of illegal hunting, trespassing and the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Tuesday, 27 October, where his sentence was handed down. Maluleke was caught on 21 May 2014, together with his co-accused, Vincent Ramavhoho, near the farm where they intended to hunt a rhino. (At the request of the owner, the farm’s name is being

withheld). Ramavhoho passed away in a vehicle accident shortly after the criminal trial commenced. Their tracks gave away their wicked intentions. Farm workers had noticed human tracks that were following a set of rhino spoor on the farm. The farm owners were notified immediately, and a tracking team was assembled. This team consisted of three private helicopters, the K9-unit, farmers and experienced trackers from the surrounding farms. Local police at first held Maluleke and Ramavhoho for questioning after they found them walking along a dirt road close to the farm. The policemen made a request for the K9-unit and trackers to leave the farm to come and inspect the two suspects’ shoes. Unaware of this request for their assistance, the K9-trackers continued to follow the suspicious tracks found near the rhino spoor and were led right up to place in the road where Maluleke and Ramavhoho were being held for questioning. Sgt. Anton Jongbloed, one of the K9’s dog masters, testified that he was able to lift two cast impressions of the suspicious tracks found on the farm. He was able to match them positively to the shoes that Maluleke and Ramovhoho were wearing at the time of their arrest. Upon questioning, the two laid bare their plan to hunt a rhino. They also pointed out a place next to the road where they had hidden a .303-rifle, knives and an axe when they heard the approaching helicopters. During the trial, Maluleke denied the allegations against him, saying he was never found on the farm, that the rifle belonged to Ramovhoho and that he had been coerced into his confession. The court, however, found that the evidence of the tracks was irrefutable and found Maluleke guilty on all the charges. Maluleke was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment on the charge of illegal hunting, five years for the illegal possession of a firearm, six months for trespassing and one year for the illegal possession of ammunition. The sentence for the trespassing and possession of ammunition was ordered to run consecutively. This means that, in effect, Maluleke was sentenced to at least 11 years’ imprisonment. He will only be eligible for parole after he has served a third of his sentence.

The war on poachers, especially rhino poachers, is gaining momentum right here in Limpopo. Private rhino owners, who own at least a sixth of South Africa’s herds, pooled their resources by starting the Limpopo Rhino Security Group (LRSG). As yet, the group is still small, but as the saying goes: Dynamite comes in small packages, or in the group’s case, a yellow-and-green Bat micro-light aircraft. LRSG’s “soldiers” are currently on the front line, fighting poachers face to face, risking their lives and families to protect rhinos all across the Limpopo Province. Apart from the foot soldiers on the ground, the group also keeps a watchful eye from above in their micro-light aircraft. The Zoutpansberger had the rare opportunity to have a secret faceto-face meeting with an LRSG-pilot and discover firsthand the work being done to protect the rhino. Due to the high risk surrounding their work, the group requested that no names be published. The high levels of security and secrecy are not only to protect the company, but also the lives of their volunteers, as well as the LRSG rhino owners. In recent years, the onslaught on South Africa’s rhino populations has taken a turn for the worse. So much so that rhino owners are reluctant to even divulge information on a rhino that was killed on their farm out of fear of further attacks. “You know, apart from losing the rhino forever, we are already facing a severely dwindling rhino gene pool,” explained the LRSG-pilot, Tim (not his real name). Needless to say, Tim got involved with the LRSG not only because of his absolute passion for conservation, but also because he could not sit back and watch the whole situation go to pot. Tim explains that while the government is going through the motions of politics, not enough is being done to protect both the owner and the rhino. “Rhino owners have no choice but to find a different

approach. Some can’t afford it and simply sell all their rhinos,” said Tim. The British News Group Sky News recently reported on the efforts made by the government to curb rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park (KNP). According to their figures, the number of rhinos poached was up by nearly 30% by mid-October of this year. As far as the Zoutpansberger was able to determine, only one privately owned rhino was poached locally during October. The success can largely be contributed to the LRSG. Praise is also high for the efforts of the local dog masters, stationed here in Louis Trichardt at the Makhado SAPS. Musina’s stock theft unit and the Rhino Task Team also received acknowledgement for their continued effort. The LRSG was started by a group of committed rhino owners in November of 2014. Since then, they have had a reported 82% drop in rhino poaching cases. “Farmers here in the Soutpansberg also reported a drop in normal poaching,” said Tim. A recent example where LRSG played an active role can be found where a would-be rhino poacher was caught and sentenced to several years behind bars. (See accompanying article left). “The LRSG’s success is due to the close relationship that the members have with local authorities, the South African Police, local communities, rhino specialists and rhino security companies,” Tim added. Intelligence information is shared almost immediately with all the relevant people and they react on it quickly. Farmers, rhino owners, or anybody who wishes to get involved or donate to the LRSG’s cause can contact them via their website by logging on to www.lrsg.co.za. The LRSG is a fully registered and legal non-profit organisation and SARS approved. They are currently in the process of installing bulletproof gear on their aircraft. Tim also confirmed that they are looking into to the possibility of acquiring three more aircraft, and that he is training pilots to command them.

Die Bessinger-egpaar het in 2008 hulle eerste kragomsetter en battery aangeskaf, sodat hulle darem die ligte kon aanhou en ‘n bietjie televisie kon kyk. Hulle het vinnig besef dat dit slim sou wees om ook sommer na ander opsies te kyk wat sou help elektrisiteit spaar. Hierdie omskakelaar het ook ‘n ingeboude batterylaaier en ‘n ingeboude rekenaar waarmee ‘n mens onder andere die sonpanele kan beheer. Ernst se stellings op die omskakelaars is dat dit eerstens staatmaak op die sonpanele se gestoorde krag om die batterye te laai. Hy wissel dan tussen Eskom- en batterykrag. “As die battery vol is, gebruik ons batterykrag, totdat dit gedaal het tot ‘n bepaalde punt en skakel dan oor na Eskom krag, en omgekeerd,” sê Ernst. Verder beheer die omskakelaar se rekenaar die omskakelings, en hy loer net af en toe of alles nog in ‘n werkende toestand is. Volgens sy berekening sal ‘n mens nie heeltemal sonder Eskom elektrisiteit kan klaarkom nie, want dit sal net te duur wees (bykans R250 000). “Maar vir ons inkomste het ons goed gedoen. Kan ons die kostes verhaal? Ons glo nie, maar die onkostes balanseer teen die ongerief, want ons leef soos voorheen – asof daar altyd krag beskikbaar is. En ons kry nie meer die opstuwings wat ons sensitiewe masjinerie beskadig nie,” het Ernst gesê.

As far as service delivery is concerned, Mutshinyali said that there had been a big improvement over the past couple of years. “Our financial management and service delivery have improved drastically as evidenced in the past two AG reports wherein the municipality moved from more than 10 years’ disclaimers and adverse opinions, to an unqualified opinion,” he said. Mutshinyali pointed out that there seemed to be some confusion as far as the appointment of staff was concerned. “The municipality has no temporary employees, but do have project employees, i.e. EPWP, and there is no agreement whatsoever reached with unions to provide temporary employees with permanent posts. All posts would be advertised for sound recruiting processes and be filled,” he said. The municipal manager also invited any person with proof of public money being used by the mayor, the municipal manager, councillors or any council official for private interest, to report such cases to law-enforcement agencies.

The Makhado municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, this week reacted to the SAMWU memorandum in which the union members make several allegations as to the manner in which tenders are awarded and the council’s funds are being spent. One of the allegations SAMWU makes, is that a tender to upgrade the electricity infrastructure was awarded to Spectrum Utility Management (Pty) Ltd without the proper procedure being followed. Mutshinyali said that in this specific case the regulations made provision for a municipality to participate in a tender already awarded by another municipality or organ of state. “(The tender) was awarded to this company to survey the municipal electricity network and submit to DMR for future budgetary processes in which the municipality could benefit, and not using any municipal money or MIG as alleged,” he said. Mutshinyali also commented on criticism that he had made multiple claims for relocating from Tzaneen to Louis Trichardt. “The Municipal Manager was paid a once-off relocation allowance in terms of the Employment Contract and the transporting of his furniture was paid directly to the service provider in terms of Council policy,” he said. The money spent the past year on security to protect the municipal manager also came under SAMWU’s spotlight. The union is concerned that more than R300 000 was spent on the personal security of Mutshinyali. He defended this expenditure and said that it had been for both the municipal manager and mayor’s security and it had been approved by Council. “All people should note that the municipal manager is not responsible for awarding tenders,” Mutshinyali said. He explained that several committees first sit and then make recommendations to the municipal manager. Tyd raak min om foto’s in te skryf vir kompetisie Dit is weer tyd vir die Zoutpansberger en Limpopo Mirror se gewilde jaarlikse kalenderfoto-kompetisie. Vanjaar het die streek se fotograwe tot Vrydag, 27 November, om 12:00 kans om hul foto’s in te skryf. “Let daarop dat ‘n maksimum van slegs vyf foto’s ingestuur kan word. In die verlede het sommige fotograwe ‘n CD met tot 30 foto’s daarop ingestuur met die versoek dat die koerant maar self vyf moet kies. Ons gaan dit nie weer doen nie en fotograwe moet asseblief self besluit wat is hul vyf beste inskrywings,” sê Andries van Zyl, nuusredakteur van die Zoutpansberger. Oudergewoonte word daar gesoek na daardie spesiale foto wat die uniekheid van die Soutpansberg-streek uitbeeld, met die klem wat hierdie keer sal val op die Soutpansberg se erfenisskatte soos ondermeer unieke landmerke en besienswaardighede. Ruimte word egter steeds gelaat vir wildlewe foto’s vanuit die Kruger Nasionale Wildtuin. Enige iemand kan vir die kompetisie inskryf en enige een staan die kans om in aanmerking te kom vir die R8 400 in totale prysgeld. Vanjaar sal daar egter bietjie meer klem wees op die tegniese aspekte van die foto-inskrywings soos beligting, skerpheid en komposisie. Ten opsigte van die tegniese aspekte van fotografie kan daar aandag gegee word aan die volgende paar wenke. Die beste tyd vir natuur- en wildlewefotografie is vroegoggend of laatmiddag. ‘n Sakkende of opkomende son maak die foto se kleure soveel ryker. Daar is ook heelwat meer fotomoontlikhede, soos die neem van ‘n silhoeëtfoto. Ook baie belangrik om te onthou as dit kom by natuur- en wildlewefotografie is om te pas-

op vir mensgemaakte strukture soos krag- en telefoonlyne, heiningdrade en mure in die foto. Neem eerder bietjie langer om die foto op te stel en dié strukture uit die foto te sny. Die twee-derdes reël kan ook help vir beter komposisie. In kort behels dit dat die fotograaf dit wat hy of sy in hul kamera se oogvinder sien, horisontaal en vertikaal in drie gelyke dele moet verdeel. Dit mag dalk ‘n mooi foto wees, maar dit maak selde vir ‘n goeie foto as die onderwerp presies in die middel van die foto is. Plaas eerder die onderwerp twee- of een derde na links of regs in die oogvinder. By mense en diere maak dit ook ‘n beter foto as die onderwerp in die foto inkyk as by die foto uitkyk. In lae lig toestande, gebruik eerder ‘n langer sluiterspoed, maar in sulke gevalle gebruik dan eerder ‘n driepoot. Slegs hoë-resolusie digitale foto’s sal aanvaar word. Geen selfoonfoto’s sal oorweeg word nie. Die foto’s kan in hoë resolusie per e-pos gestuur word, of op CD of geheuestokkie ingehandig word by die kantore van die Zoutpansberger te Joubertstraat 16B in Louis Trichardt. Elke inskrywing moet vergesel wees van die fotograaf se naam, kontakbesonderhede, waar die foto geneem is en met watter kamera dit geneem is. Uit die inskrywings sal die koerantgroep 12 wenfoto’s kies wat opgeneem sal word in ‘n A2-formaat, volkleur 2016-kalender. Elk van die wenfoto’s sal teen R700 by die fotograaf aangekoop word. Die kalender sal deur die Zoutpansberger en Limpopo Mirror gebruik word vir bemarkingsdoeleindes, maar sal ook aan die publiek beskikbaar gestel word om te koop teen ‘n minimale bedrag.

very day we drive, walk and (the more energetic) even run past them. Few of us bother to look at the signs on the intersections where the roads meet. Those of us who do notice the street signs often wonder where the names come from. Who were Van Warmelo, Heysteck, Cronjé or Bergh? What did they do to deserve a spot on the corner of a street? In a new column, we want to delve into the history and search for the origins of Louis Trichardt’s street names. We want to find out who these people were, when they lived and what impact they had on the town and the region. Many towns have a Rissik Street or a Landdros Street, so we’re not that interested in them. We’re interested in the uniquely Soutpansberg names. For the column to be interesting and relevant, we need the input from our readers. If you know a bit of the history of the people whose names appear on a street sign, please let us know. Laerskool Louis Trichardt het verlede week deelgeneem aan die nasionale finaal van die Radikale Redenaarskompetisie wat by Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria aangebied is. Die Afrikaanse span het ‘n tweedeplek behaal. Die span is voor, van links na regs, Shani Potgieter, Sanri Ludick, Luan Kotze en Wilme Pretorius. Hulle afrigters was Danelle van Tonder en Vickey Potgieter. Agter is Mia Alberts, Willem Schutte en Joné Potgieter. Hierdie drietjies is afgerig deur Heidi Alberts. Angelique van der Westhuizen was afwesig tydens die neem van die foto.

Louis Trichardt Primary School had two English teams that competed in the Radikale Orators Competition that was held at Garsfontein High School in Pretoria from 30 to 31 October. The second team is in front, from left to right, Sally Machochi, Naki Sadiki, Tshedza Khangale and Bono Mamphiswana. They were awarded a second-place trophy. The first team, standing at the back, is Modjadji Sefole, Matamela Muleba, Funi Dovhada and Makgomo Nkoana. They won first place and were trained by Louise Dekker and Madelein Nel.

Dié groot privaat plaasdam is gewoonlik nie oop is vir die publiek nie en word met vergunning vir die gemeente beskikbaar gestel. Levubu police searching for murder supect By Kaizer Nengovhela

The body of a 50-year-old woman, Grace Guma ni of Makushu, was found in a pool of blood at a Levubu farm last Friday. According to a police report, the son of the deceased tried to call her that day, but the phone kept ringing. He later decided to visit his mother at the room where she stayed. On arrival he noticed that one of the windows was broken and left open. He went into the house, only to find his mother’s lifeless body. She had apparently been stabbed and injured with a heavy instrument, the police report states. The police took in two neighbours who stayed at the same hostel for questioning, but later released

them. They have since launched a manhunt for the suspect. Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola said the deceased had sustained serious injuries to the chest and neck. “The victim was so seriously injured that she died at the scene. There was blood all over the room, which clearly indicates that the suspect was ready to kill.” Mukhola appealed to community members who might know something about the suspect to report at the nearest police station. Ms Gumani left behind three children, one son and two daughters. Philemon Tshinyelo, son of the deceased, said that the death had brought a lot of misery to the family as they had to prepare for a funeral that they had not planned.

A high-ranking delegation from the Limpopo provincial government, led by the MEC for Economic Development Environment and Tourism, Mr Seaparo Sekoati, Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe and the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Joy Mashoge, visited the Venetia Mine last Thursday to scrutinize the progress that has been made at the mine. Mr Ludi von Maltiz, the general manager of the mine, expressed the hope that the officials from the government would inform the outside world about what was happening at the mine. He said that they were doing their best to make rural scholars take education seriously and that the

mine was proud of its partnership with the Department of Education. “We are also supporting four schools with the building of new classrooms and refurbishing the old and dilapidated schools,” said Von Maltiz. He said the mine was also assisting some nearby communities with infrastructure programmes and also improving the skills of teachers of schools which are found near the mine. Venetia Mine is situated near Musina, close to Botswana and Zimbabwe, and is one of De Beers’ major diamond-mining operations. The mine opened on 14 August 1992. MEC Sekoati said the government was excited that the jobs of miners at Venetia would be sustained through the extension of the mine underground, which was scheduled to commence in 2021 and would continue to 2043.

Drie van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se jong fietsryers, Kombo Bere, Marno van Zyl en Gerhardt Meyer, het die afgelope naweek besluit om bietjie die eksamenboeke opsy te skuif en te gaan deelneem aan die vyfde jaarlikse Mooketsi Bergfiets Uitdaging buite Tzaneen. Die drie het reeds ‘n bedrywige jaar van fiets ry agter die rug. As deel van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se fietsryspan het hulle op 19 September deelgeneem aan die vierde en finale rondte van die Limpopo DebtSafe Skoleliga. Op grond van hulle en hul spanmaats se prestasies in dié reeks was hul deel van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se skole fietsryspan wat gekies is om op 3 en 4 Oktober te gaan deelneem aan die nasionale 2015 Spur Skole Bergfiets-finale by Hoërskool Bekker in Magaliesburg. Kombo was ook deel was van die provinsiale

span wat Limpopo op die tweede dag van die finaal verteenwoordig het. Tydens Saterdag se Mooketsi Bergfiets Uitdaging, wat as kwalifiserende rondte dien vir Limpopo kleure, het Bere, Van Zyl en Meyer skitterend gery en spog hulle almal met top podium posisies. Bere wen die uitmergelende 70 km wedren in ‘n tyd van 02:46:08. Sy naaste kompetisie, Dick Rood, eindig bykans drie minute later in die tweede plek met ‘n tyd van 02:48:56, terwyl Bill Noel derde was in ‘n tyd van 02:54:41. Altesaam 30 fietsryers het aan die 70 km

deelgeneem. Die 35 km wedren het ‘n vol veld van digby 140 deelnemers gelok, met Van Zyl en Meyer wat onderskeidelik eerste en tweede in die wedren oor die eindstreep jaag. Dit was Van Zyl

wat Meyer naelskraaps klop met ‘n sekonde. Van Zyl se wentyd was 01:31:33 met Meyer tweede in 01:31:34. Ricardo Gutierrez eindig sowat 14 sekondes later in ‘n tyd van 01:31:48.
