Numerous death threats to Home Affairs official
“I am ready to die” A Home Affairs official residing in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), Vhamusanda Vho-Maanda Themeli, spoke out for the first time after he had been receiving numerous death threats since around 2011. The latest incidence of a threat took place on Saturday morning when he discovered a threatening note thrown into his yard. “When I woke up on Saturday morning, I found an A4 page with a threatening message printed on it in bold, black lettering,” he said. “I am not scared - in fact, I am even ready to die.” The note had the words (verbatim and unedited): “Vhakhovhonwa Vho Themeli. Khavhalitshe rine rishumele vhana vhashu vhalitshe urisala murahu and your days are numberd (sic). Vhufogisihavho vhudovhavhulahisa. Ridivha movement yavho yothe. Nndaa. Vhadofasammbwa.” The note can be loosely translated as follows: “You are being watched. Stop interfering with us because we are working for our children. Your days are numbered. Your spying will get you killed. We know all your movements. Ndaa (A Tshivenda masculine mode of greeting or acknowledgement). You will die like a dog.” On December 2013, Themeli was deployed at the Beit Bridge border post. He alleges that he got numerous anonymous calls, warning him to stop spying or else he would get killed. “I am not afraid of these threats. When I go to work, I tell myself that I am going to work for myself and my family,” he said. “I go to Home Affairs’ offices to serve my country through my contribution as an official.” On 2012, a carcass of a dog was thrown into his yard, which also suggested that those who had done that were telling him that he would die like a dog. “I reported the matter to the police at the time,”
2012 Audi Q5 2.0T FSi Triptronic 155Kw, Pano Glass S/R, 18” Wheels, Xenons
he said. “I won’t allow anybody to threaten me. And I won’t bow down to persecution.” At one stage, his “persecutors” stole the keys of his car from his table at the Beit Bridge office, and he had to use a spare key, which was kept safely at home. “I strongly believe that everyone’s life belongs to God, who holds the power of death and life, and not just a mere human being who threatens another fellow human being,” he said. Vho-Themeli said that he had reported Saturday’s incident to
the Makhado police. When contacted for comment, Const Tsietsi Lamola of Limpopo SAPS’s Media Liaison Centre said that there was at this stage nothing tangile in their records to prove that Vho-Themeli’s case had been registered at the police station. Right: Vhamusanda VhoMaanda Themeli says he is not scared by death threats.

“We want nothing less than our own municipality” Malamulele resembled a ghost town, with everything coming to a standstill for the day. The community on Friday embarked on a complete shutdown, with schools, businesses, taxi rank and offices closed in the area spanning more than 100 settlements The shutdown was as a result of promises made by political leaders just before the elections for a speedy resolution to the municipal issue at Malamulele. Members of the Malamulele community want to break away from the Thulamela municipality and have their own municipality. The shutdown was decided upon when the community felt that the ANC and the government had reneged on their decision to conclude the matter by July 31. They said that Pres Jacob Zuma has said, on visiting the area in April, that he was committed to seeing the matter concluded “as soon as possible.” Prior to the national elections, ANC leaders Ruth Bhengu, Billy Masetla and Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele spent a long time in Malamulele, talking to ANC structures to persuade them and the community to vote. During that time, it was mentioned that Premier Stan Mathabatha and SACP deputy secretary general Solly Maphaila had also indicated that they believed the Malamulele community’s demands were reasonable. Unlike previous stay-aways that left the town a mess, the town was deserted. The situation was
calm, with only a handful of people and police placed at strategic points around the town. On Sunday, the community held a meeting at the local boxing gym and it was decided to suspend the stay-away. However, the Malamulele Demarcation Task Team said that the community would not back down until they were given their own municipality. Task team secretary Dr Jan Nkuna said the community had
suspended the stay-away "in order to give negotiations a chance. We are are to meet Min Pravin Gordan in Pretoria. We want nothing less than what our people demand. We are not representing ourselves but the community, who want their own municipality. We expect the government to give us the municipality,” he said. The Malamulele police spokesperson commended the community for a peaceful meeting and stay-away. Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana celebrated his birthday at Dzanani on Saturday. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including many chiefs and mayors from around Vhembe and the MEC for Roads and Infrastructure, Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli. Marakele National Park best in northern cluster The Marakele National Park in the Waterberg biosphere received the award as the northern cluster's Park of the Year during a ceremony held at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage site a fortnight ago. SANparks' northern cluster parks comprise Mapungubwe, Marakele and the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The annual awards acknowledge excellent work of committed employees and it is one of the initiatives driven by the annual Kudu awards intended to award excellence throughout SANparks. The ceremony also meant to instil a culture of achievements and excellence, encourage excellent performance and ensure a continuous quality service for the stakeholders. Employees, mostly from Marakele Park, walked home with most of the accolades during Friday's ceremony. Mr Risenga Craven Mashave received the most prestigious award of the day, namely the regional manager's special award. This award also came with a R3 000 prize. SANParks' northern regional manager, Mr Property Mokoena, said the ceremony would motivate the team of at least 400 employees in the northern region to compete and uplift the region to the highest level. “We are celebrating those employees who work tirelessly in their daily jobs,” he said. Mr Mokoena said the northern region national parks were very complex and faced many challenges. “Our parks are buffer zones. The moment I stepped into the mobile toilet courtyard at the Makhado Show, maddened shouts and screams snatched my attention. When I looked to the right, I saw that a large group of mainly males was assaulting a man. I rushed over and came to stand nearby, listening to people shouting that he deserved to be taught a lesson, so that he could stop his silly habit of snatching cell phones and handbags from powerless ladies. There was a strong team of security officers around who tried to rescue the helpless man. As one security officer tried to reason with the en-

Man feigns death and survives mob attack raged mob, one of the men hit the security officer across the face with a fist. More people shouted that the security officers must stop rescuing criminals because, in doing so, it might seem like they condoned acts of crime. The team of security officers stepped back and the men continued to teach the 'thief' a lesson. Some poured cold beer on him, and another man urinated on his face and head. “You wanted to rape our sister, bhari yehiyi (you fool)!” shouted the one who urinated on him. The victim wailed and cried, but that didn't help either while they kicked him and hit him with cans of beer. He probably feigned death to try and escape their wrath. As I stood around, I sympathised
with the helpless, beaten man and raised my voice for all to hear. I pleaded with the mob to show him some mercy. I knew that I was also putting my life at risk. After reasoning with the mob for about 10 minutes, they listened to me and stopped beating him. The mob dispersed. The security officials were not sure if an ambulance or the police had been called. It was about 45 minutes after the man had been assaulted. I had no numbers for the EMS ready either, so I called the Makhado SAPS's cluster commander, Brig Alex Seopa, and asked him to do 'something'. He agreed and promised to get back to me. Indeed, he called and notified me that the police and ambulance had been sent for the man, who needed immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, the man was still sprawled on the ground, his body shaking from the cold. His t-shirt was torn. He opened his eyes and tearfully said: “I thank you for rescuing me, brother. I am not a habitual thief. I was only trying my luck, so that I could sell that phone and have cash to buy beer like other people here. But now they taught me a lesson I will never forget in my life. I thank them for beating me.” Soon the ambulance arrived. The personnel helped him An unidentified woman tried to speak into the ambulance with the assaulted man. and drove off.

Several meetings to honour region’s women Esteemed photojournalist laid to rest The Vhembe District Municipality planned several events in the region to celebrate Women’s Day. The celebrations started on Wednesday (6th) at the Makhado municipality. More than 100 women were expected to clean a local orphanage centre in the Bungeni area in an effort to highlight the challenges experienced by women in the 20 years of democracy. The district municipality spokesperson, Mr
The Thohoyandou police are appealing to community members who might have information about the whereabouts of Tshifhiwa Ratshilumela (photo) to please contact them urgently. They believe he could help them in solving outstanding fraud cases. He is believed to be in the Vhufuli area or at Tshakhuma village. Those with inormation are requested to contact Const Mashudu Tshisikule at 072 676 6221 or Captain Dau 082 469 1067.
Matodzi Ralushai, said during this month the municipality would engage several stakeholders to tackle challenges that women were facing. He said the municipality increased its efforts to engage more women in the district. The municipality has several programmes throughout the year to empower women, he added. “We always have workshops to provide economic opportunities for women, entrepreneurial competitions within the district and we also urge women to do business with the municipality, and this will empower them,” he said. The provincial government will host Women’s Day celebrations at the Tafelkop Stadium in the area of the Elias Motswaledi municipality in the Sekhukhune district tomorrow (Saturday). During the day, government departments and the local municipalities will be exhibiting and rendering services to the members of the community, with the main focus on women empowerment. The Premier of Limpopo and the members of the executive council will also attend the celebrations. The spokesperson for the provincial government, Mr Phuthi Seloba, calls on members of the public to attend the event. “The event is centred on women empowerment and it is important for women in the province to attend,” he said. Next Saturday (16 August), the district municipality, in cooperation with the Musina municipality, will host a Women’s Day celebration in the Nancefield community hall, and on 22 August, the Thulamela municipality will celebrate the month during an event in the Thohoyandou town hall. The main district event, which that will close the month’s celebrations, will take place at the Thohoyandou Arts Centre. At the time of going to press, the date was yet to be confirmed. The co-ordinator, Mr Khathutshelo Mapholi, said the event would be an opportunity for women to discuss issues that affected them. “Our women will debate issues that impact on their lives, especially about opportunities for them. This will include women in politics, women in government, economic empowerment and financial independence,” said Mapholi.

The Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthambi, described photojournalist Elijar Mushiana as a unique man who was able to express what a thousand words could not. She was addressing thousands of mourners at the Vuwani Apostolic Church on Saturday, who came to pay their last respects to Mushiana on Saturday. “Elijar was reliable and competent, but it was his hard work that made him a supreme photojournalist who devoted his entire life to the media industry. He was a man of substance, who earned the respect of everyone through his consummate work, not only in Limpopo, but across South Africa. The journalism industry and South Africa as a whole have lost a truly remarkable man,” she said. Muthambi added that, through his excellent work, Mushiana had demonstrated that there was room for the industry to play a role as facilitator for development in our country. “His contributions will never be forgotten,” she said. Veteran journalist and executive director of the South African National Editor’s Forum (Sanef) Mathatha Tsedu said the journalism industry would no longer be the same without Mushiana. “He was such a remarkable photojournalist, who would capture ordinary things in an unusual manner. He did his work diligently, not for the love of monetary rewards. It is rare to find people with work passion of Mushiana’s caliber.
He was a guiding light to many young people who wanted to pursue a career in journalism, especially in Vhembe, where he originated.” The editor of Sowetan, Mr Mpumelelo Mkhabela, said the newspaper had lost a valuable asset that would be difficult to replace. “His pictures were outstanding and he was one of the most loyal employees we could rely on. A dark cloud of mourning is hanging in our newsroom and things will no longer be the same without him. We thought he would recover and come back to join us but, unfortunately, God’s plan was far different from ours.” After an emotional service at Vuwani Apostolic Faith Mission Church, Mushiana (41) was laid to rest at his family’s burial plot at Tshimbupfe village. He was born on 28 May 1973 at Tshimbupfe Chielfarm village. He is the third-born child of his late father, Insp (Vhaingameli) Joseph Mpomokeni Mushiana and his mother, Selinah. He completed Grade 12 at Tshimbupfe Secondary School in 1990. During this time, he developed an interest in photography. He briefly joined the South African National Defence Force but did not stay long because of his passion for photojournalism. During the past 20 years, he worked for different media houses as a freelance photojournalist. These include Limpopo Mirror, City Press, Capricorn Voice, Sunday Sun, Sunday
World, Sunday Times, Drum Magazine, Pace Magazine and Next Magazine. At the time of his death, he was photographic head of the Limpopo bureau of Sowetan in Polokwane. When all local journalists were practicing their trades in the streets, Mushiana was the first one to establish an office in the heart of Thohoyandou. This was followed by the opening of his own news agency, called Northern Independent Press Association (NIPA), in 1993. He was a founder member of Vhembe Media Forum, of which he served as chairperson for two years in succession. As a prolific and versatile media practitioner, Mushina won more than 20 awards during his lifetime, in addition to being crowned the 2012 Sowetan Photographer of the Year. A community builder in his own right, Mushiana taught photographic skills to local young journalists, free of charge. He strived for unity among the media fraternity by organizing countless workshops and award ceremonies to motivate fellow journalists. A staunch member of the Old Mission Zion Apostolic Church, the ever-smiling Mushiana lost his battle with colon cancer at Polokwane Mediclinic on 27 July. He was furthering his studies with the University of South Africa at the time of his death. He is survived by his mother (Selinah) two sisters (Mashudu and Livhuwani) and a brother (Joshua).

Two people killed in bakkie accident Two people were crushed to death when their small bakkie was pinned underneath a truck and dragged several meters along the highway. Another two people also sustained minor injuries in this
accident that occurred close to the entrance of the Lalapanzi Hotel on the N1 south towards Polokwane on Sunday, 27 July. According to information supplied, the bakkie was trying to overtake the truck when it

After 15 years Nkomo still without water The residents in the rural village of Nkomo near Giyani continue to suffer thirst, even after many attempts at convincing the municipality to provide them with tankers on a regular basis. “We last had running water some 15 years ago,” said a resident, Ms Annah Ngobeni. “Each time we went to vote, we just hoped that things would change for the better. But, still, we got no change!” The village is stony and dry, and is dottled with leafless trees. Recently, Limpopo Mirror noticed three ladies, Ms Idah Hhlungwani (52), Ms Maria Chuma (49) and Ngobeni (51) pushing wheelbarrows in the dusty streets. They said that residents buy water from villagers who have got boreholes drilled in their homes. They added that a 20 litre bottle of water costs R2.
Hlungwani said that at her house they normally use about 11 bottles per day, “but when we do our washing we need more water,” she said. “It’s unimaginable that a rural, unemployed woman like me could spend around R900 per month on water!” Ngobeni echoed Hlungwani’s statement. “We are suffering right in our dry village and we are no longer sure where to report our plight,” she said. “Sometimes our children and grandchildren go to school smelling bad as a result of not bathing properly for several days.” Chuma said that life has been difficult for her and those of her house for all those years. “Buying water from those who have the previlege of owning a borehole is a real heartache to us, since they refuse to sell to us sometimes,” said Chuma. “They say their boreholes are getting dry, and we
can’t blame them for closing their gates! We can’t afford to drill our own boreholes. Most of us here are unemployed and have no other means of earning a living.” Residents claimed that there were at least three dysfunctional boreholes in the village, which should have been fixed long time ago. The spokesperson for the Greater Giyani Municipality, Mr Steven Mavunda, admitted that there was a water problem in the area. “The lack of water in this area is a big challenge which the district municipality is tackling,” Mabunda said. “We believe that this issue will be addressed and that residents will finally get water at the end of the day.” He then referred the newspaper to spokesperson for Mopani District Municipality, Neil Shikwambane. Shikwambane was not available at the time of going to press.

Mphaphuli school wins books and mobile library Learning and teaching at Mphaphuli Secondary School near Thohoyandou will change for the better, after the school’s boys soccer team won a mobile library in the recent Express Store soccer tournament. The school won a mobile library to the value of R60 000, some 250 educational books, soccer kits and a trophy. The principal, Mr Lufuno Mulaudzi, was over the moon with the prize. “We believe learning and teaching at our school will change for the better. The school
received good books, written in simple language that even Grade 8 pupils can read and understand. The books will improve the usage of the English language for our pupils,” said Mulaudzi. According to him, although his school’s building is old and dilapidated, they are usually not performing well in sporting codes such as soccer, netball and basketball. However, at academic level, the pupils are excelling, especially the Grade 12s. The manager of Express Stores in

“Competent drivers will ensure safety on roads” The regional round of the annual Driver of Year competition took place at the Makhado Municipality’s testing grounds in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) two weeks ago. Drivers competed in different categories, such as for rigid trucks, rigid trucks with trailers, LDV 3.5 ton trucks, articulateds, male bus drivers and female bus drivers. According to the deputy manager for road safety in the Vhembe District, Ms Khathutshelo Netshifhefhe, accidents caused by truck drivers had made headlines the past year. She said that it was vital for companies to employ competent drivers who abided by the rules of the road to ensure public safety and com-
pany productivity. Netshifhefhe said that the main objective of the competition was to revise the driving skills of the drivers in the country. “The competition tests the competency of the drivers of the big vehicles, such as buses and trucks. We test all the drivers participating in the competition, both on a public road and inside the testing grounds. It’s like when a person is getting tested for a driver’s license,” she said. “Competent truck drivers will not only ensure safety on our roads, but also ensure that business productivity is increased with minimal or no cost.” Netshifhefhe emphasised the importance of these competitions.
“The tests that our drivers were subjected to are just one of the strategies that the department has developed in a bid to reduce road fatalities by 50% by 2020,” she said. The winners of the event will participate in the Vhembe championships on September 13 at Mphephu Airport. Ms Tshimangadzo Dzegere won the first prize in the female section in the rigid-truck category. Constance Luvhengo and Lilly Rambuda ended in second and third position respectively. Mr Raymond Rikhotso was the best LDV 3.5 ton driver, while Mr Humbulani Ramasunzi won the male division for rigid trucks with trailers.
The top 5 in Grade 6 at Gateway Primary are, from left to right, Samantha Shaba (top achiever), Manana Nkuna, Luyanda Nkundlande, Khan Mohammed and Caroline Maphosa. Ms Tshimangadzo Dzegere won the first prize in the female section in the rigid truck category. Constance Luvhengo and Lilly Rambuda ended in second and third position respectively.

Annual Makhado Show a colourful celebration of culture and entertainment
By Phathutshedzo Luvhengo

The annual Makhado Show was official opened during a glamorous ceremony last Thursday, following a parade from the civic centre to the municipal show grounds. The municipal mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said the show was an opportunity for families and communities to meet at one place and celebrate the existence of the Makhado municipality. The King of the Vha-Venda, Khosikhulu
Vho-Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, also thanked the public and all stakeholders for supporting the event. Apart from entertainment and fun, information and education were also at the centre of the annual show. Several exhibitors disseminated information from Thursday until Saturday afternoon. Government institutions, including the Premier’s Office, the Department of Transport, local business enterprises, Makhado AFB, Vhembe District Municipality and the Makhado municipal library
distributed information to the public. Sgt Thomas Mulaudzi from Makhado AFB says they were not only giving the information to the public, but also exhibiting information to the pupils who were interested in pursuing careers in the South African National Defence Force. Kuniyuki Takahashi from Japan, DJ Jack Swartz from the Netherlands, South Africa’s longest-spinning and influential House deejay DJ Christos and various local artists entertained the public during the music festival.
The traditional bare-knuckle fighting, musangwe, attracted many fans.

“God is good.” These were the words of the Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Phaswana when he recently installed Mr Joseph Phungo as a member of the Prayer Men’s League (PML) at the Zamekomste Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa. As a member of the PML, Phungo is to lead a faithful life of daily worship. He is to set an example of being a good Christian neighbour in the church and the community. He is the chairperson of the Tshiozwi congregation and a principal in the Soutpansberg West Circuit. “Indigenous food is very healthy” Several residents of Tshiozwi, especially some of the elders, flocked in numbers to the Sinthumule tribal offices a fortnight ago to attend a project aimed at highlighting the importance of indigenous foods. The elderly displayed indigenous food and clothing, while the guests were also entertained by impressive traditional dances. Indigenous food on display included mukusule (dried vegetables) and thophi (pumpkin). An organisers, Mr Petrus Mamburu, said they wanted to encourage people to eat food prepared with fresh ingredients. He expressed his gratitude towards the rural women who had provided them with information and tips on the preparation of traditional Venda cuisine. “Indigenous food is healthy food. Our dishes are made up of food that is packed with vitamins, because the vegetables are raw and have not been kept in cold-storage rooms.” He added that the communities must be proud of their culture and customs and not “be copycats of other peoples’ cultures. We must learn to love and appreciate our history, tradition and morality, because those are the basis from which a strong nation develops. Our indigenous languages should also be preserved for the benefit of the young generation and the community at large,” said Mamburu. Ms Elisa Tambani said most vegetables were fat-free and low in calories, because they contained a lot of water.

Good victory for Sambandou Professionals Sambandou United Professionals beat Phandulaluvalo FC 2-0 to book a place in the semifinal stage of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Saturday. The score was not a true re-
flection of the game as Phandulaluvalo squandered numerous scoring chances within the first 20 minutes. It took them only a few minutes to realize that it was not their day. Mbebo Nephawe received
a beautiful pass from Phathutshedzo Masindi, but his ground cutter hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play. Professionals gained momentum as the game approached the half-time mark. Unlike Phandulaluvalo, Professionals made use of whatever chances they got. Their captain, Tshivhona Nthangeni, who scored a brace in the match, made his presence felt in the 39th minute. He capitalized on Ndivhuwo Ramunwana’s clearing error and beat the keeper with a half volley. Phandulaluvalo did not stop fighting after conceding the first goal. They continued to fight collectively, but their strikers were unlucky. United had another scoring chance early in the last half. Tshimangadzo Munzhelele forced his way Mulisa Netshitongwe of United Professionals hooks the ball. through the defence of Phandulaluvalo, but he lost possession just before he unleashed from inside the box. United Professionals increased the margin in the 78th minute. Tshivhona Nthangeni was on target with a long-range volley. The keeper of Phandulaluvalo, Millet Rambuda, watched helplessly as the ball hit the crossbar and landed across the goal line. The referee, Mr Christopher Mugeri, was forced to stop the fast-flowing game after Murangi Likhala of Phandulaluvalo sustained serious injury Khangwelo Nelwamondo of Professionals (right) hooks the ball, while after colliding head-on Murangi Likhala of Phandulaluvalo attempts to intercept. with an opponent.

Human Rights resource centre at Univen Ms Katherine Liao from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has urged Univen students to make use of the new human rights resource centre for research. The recent donation of a resource centre to the law library by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights forms part of the collection of hard copies of law books. The centre aims to give free access to publications of the Office of the High Commissioner
for human rights professionals, researchers, civil society and the public at large. “High Commissioner Navi Pillay has a special bond with the University of Venda as in May 2012 she received an honorary doctorate from Univen during the celebrations of its 30 years of excellent academic scholarship and service to the country.” According to Liao, the establishment of the human rights resource centre is part of a larger project whereby the regional
office for Southern Africa of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights seeks to establish centres in all countries in the area. The dean of the School of Law, Ms Annette Lansink, welcomed the establishment of the resource centre as a “most generous gift to the University of Venda and its community. We have made enormous strides at the University of Venda, as we have almost 13 000 students and eight schools in the School of Law.”

A goal in the early minutes of the second half was good enough to secure Mutale Vikings a place in the final of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge at the expense of Tshibvumo Young Stars. The match was played at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Saturday. Realizing that it was difficult for them to match their opponents when it came to pace, Vikings abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the back and relied on counter-attacks. It was only after Young Stars had started to show some signs of tiredness that Vikings took the game to them. That forced the Stars to play with their backs against the wall for about 15 minutes. Young Stars were lucky not to concede an avalanche of goals towards the end of the first half. At that stage, Vikings were doing as they pleased in Stars’ danger area. The referee, Mr Calvin Nemavhola, warned Rembuluwani

Maphagela of Vikings with a card four minutes before the teams adjourned for half time. Maphagela tackled Thabelo Mabila from behind at the edge of the penalty box. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Vikings strengthened their striking force by introducing two new faces early in the last half. Vikings’ replacements were a good cause for Young Stars to press the panic button. They demonstrated this by starting to play defensive football as if they were leading. They were severely punished for that. In the 59th minute, the boys were separated from the men. Mulavhelesi Munyai, the Vikings' overlapping midfielder, forced his way through the defence of Stars and blasted in a close-range ground cutter. Young Stars did not give in without a fight, though. They initiated some promising moves from behind, but their fighting spirit faded as they approached the opponents’ danger area. They threatened to find the equalizer in the 78th minute, when Hulisani Vhulahani tried his luck from outside the box, but the ball went a little wide.

Huge interest in show’s musangwe fights Thousands of people turned up at the Mabirimisa Bus service stage at the Makhado show on Saturday to watch the musangwe tournament. The event was officially opened by King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, who also celebrated his birthday on Saturday. King Toni said that the roy-
al council was committed to preserving the Venda culture and they felt bound to support the tournament as musangwe formed part of the Venda culture. He praised the organisers for bringing back the forgotten cultural sport. The organiser, Mr Patrick Ramarada, praised the management
of Mabirimisa bus company for their decision to sponsor the tournament, despite the economic hardships that are facing the business community in the area. He said it was important that future stars' talent be identified. Mr Robert Mabirimisa of Mabirimisa Bus Service said that it was the policy of his company to plough back into the community. He said that sponsorships played a vital role in sports development. One of the fighters, Steven Nditwani, said it was the sport that he enjoyed most. “Some say it is a primitive game, but I don’t agree, because it is like other games. It is meant to promote friendship, because we bear no grudges after the fight, even if one is defeated. This is the game of our forefathers and we will never stop Phindulo Ndou (left) and Nkhumbuleni Nemadialaga in action. following in their footsteps.” Steven Nditwani showed his supporters that he was not roaring for nothing, when he convincingly beat his opponent, Timer Munyai. In another match, Meshack Masikwa lost to Thanyani Sithavhandou. In the fight between Khetho Ndou and Khodani Nephalama, Khetho was declared the winner. The most entertaining fight was between Shane Ramarada and Mulalao Tshifura. Shane was Thanyani Sithavhathavha (left) takes a swing at Khodani Nephalama. declared the winner. By Frank Mavhungu
