Netshifhefhe added that the Makoya team strongly condemned this type of behaviour. “Those people who do this kind of mischief, we cannot identify

ourselves with them. They are not part of us; they will never be part of us; they have never been part of us.”

Rumours that a part of the entrance money of the show had gone missing or had been stolen could not be confirmed.

Netshifhefhe said he was unwilling to comment on this as the matter was still being investigated to determine if money was really missing.

The public park opposite the show ground (along Leeu Street) was littered with thousands of empty liquor bottles and beer cans on Sunday morning. The park was used as a taxi rank the previous night. It was also the seen of a murder, with the discovery of a man stabbed to death.

Verder word beweer leerlinge se toetsresultate is nie privaat gehou nie en die aangeklaagdes is glo aangehou sonder dat hul regte aan hul voorgelees is. Verder is hulle in ‘n gemerkte polisievoertuig vervoer.

Die polisie het in ‘n verklaring dit duidelik gestel dat hulle uit hul pad gegaan het om te verseker dat die kinders se regte nie geskend word nie.

“Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens het hulle huiswerk deeglik gedoen, voordat hulle die klopjag uitgevoer het,” het plaaslike polisiewoordvoerder A/O Takalani Madzhigili gesê.

Madzhigili het bevestig dat die polisie net betrokke geraak het op versoek en uitnodiging van die skool en die skoolbeheerraad. “Dit is aan die SAPD verduidelik dat daar ‘n

dwelmprobleem is by die skool en dat die polisie se hulp nodig is,” het Madzhigili verduidelik.

Madzhigili het beaam dat die polisie vooraf ‘n ondersoek geloods het om te bepaal of daar redelike gronde is vir so ‘n klopjag. Die koerant kon vasstel dat die dwelmprobleem reeds in 2013 onder die polisie se aandag gebring is.

Dit het beteken dat die leerlinge na die hof vervoer moes word, en later na die staatshospitaal vir verdere bloedtoetse. “Die rede hiervoor is dat ‘n bloedtoets meer akkuraat is. ‘n Bloedtoets kan bepaal hoeveel narkotiese stowwe in iemand se stelsel is, en ook onderskei tussen

medisinale en onwettige misbruik,” het Madzhigili gesê.

Madzhigili het bevestig dat die aangehoude leerlinge in ‘n gemerkte polisiebus, met getinte vensters, van die skool na die hof vervoer is. Volgens Madzhigili was dit die gemaklikste voertuig tot hulle beskikking.

In terme van wetgewing rus daar nie ‘n verpligting op die polisie om ‘n ongemerkte voertuig te gebruik as minderjariges vervoer word nie, maar wel een wat so min as moontlik inbreuk sal maak op sy of haar reg op privaatheid; derhalwe die getinte vensters.

Madzhigili het gesê dit is nie waar dat gearresteerde leerlinge se ouers nie in kennis gestel is nie, of dat leerlinge se regte nie aan hulle verduidelik is nie. “Toe die kinders by die hof aangekom het, is hul ouers onmiddellik in kennis gestel. Indien ‘n ouer nie opgespoor kon word nie, is ‘n ander familielid of voog in kennis gestel.

Toe die ouers geskakel is, is hulle ook ingelig dat die kinders honger en dors is, en die ouers het saam met die staatsaanklaers verseker dat hulle gevoed word.”

Madzhigili het bevestig dat die leerlinge nooit saam met volwassenes aangehou is nie. “Tensy die ouers wil argumenteer dat die vier leerlinge wat oor die ouderdom van 18 is, geklassifiseer word as volwassenes – dit is egter, op ‘n meer ernstige noot, ‘n belaglike argument,” het Madzhigili gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat dit nie die laaste klopjag is wat by die skool gedoen sal word nie.

Another crash at notorious intersection The notorious Munnik and Breda Street intersection in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has seen yet another accident.

The collision occurred just after 11:00 on 30 July, the force of which threw the one vehicle right into the palisade fence of an adjacent house on the corner of the intersection. Judging by the damage to the vehicles, it was a miracle that no one sustained injuries.

According to local police spokesperson WO Takalani Madzhigili, the two vehicles involved were a bakkie driven

by Mr Esau Pandelani and a sedan driven by Mr Anderson Magwira.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated, and both drivers are sus-

pects…” said Madzhigili. The case docket will be submitted to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) for a decision.

The report does not state which vehicle was travelling in Munnik Street. More often than not, motorists skip the stop signs in Munnik Street at this intersection.

Traffic in Breda Street have the right of way and do not need to stop. This intersection nearly claimed a life in June 2012 and many vehicles have been severely damaged in collisions here.

But why is this sad history still repeating itself?

“Accidents seem to occur every three or four weeks at that intersection. I will once again recommend to the town council that the intersection should

rather become a four-way stop,” said local DA Councillor Brian du Plooy.

In reaction to the accident, the municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, said that he would check the Munnik and Breda intersection by 7 August, speak to the traffic people and then apply his mind as to what would be the best course of action.

Upon investigation by the Zoutpansberger, it appeared that the stop sign in Munnik Street, for vehicles travelling north, is situated further from the roadside and is somewhat obscure. There are almost no road markings left and only the last two letters of STOP are barely visible. The stop sign on the opposite corner is very faded, as are the road markings.

AfriForum claims water victory for Makhado A day of victory for the water supply to Makha­ do (Louis Trichardt) dawned when contractors handed over the 10 old boreholes to the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM). These boreholes supply water to the Bergh Street reservoir, one of the main reservoirs in town.

This week, the Bergh Street reservoir and the large Mowkop reservoir were reported to be 100% full, which is indeed a water supply victory.

In light of this fact, the town’s crisis of not having water in the reservoirs was officially declared over

by AfriForum’s head office. AfriForum approached the court in 2012 to force the VDM to adhere to their constitutional responsibilities regarding water supply to the community. The court had to be approached a second time, this time to bring a Contempt of Court Application against the municipal manager in his personal capacity.

“While we celebrate delivery on the mandate given to us by the community to restore the water flow to town – as ordered by the High Court - we warn the municipality that we retain the right to monitor their maintenance of newly renovated facilities. The court order demands a consistent water supply and we will not consider lifting the conditions dictated by this order until water flows uninterrupted,” said Mr Wally Schultz, local AfriForum chairperson.

AfriForum’s provincial coordinator, Mr Morné Mostert, said that inadequate service delivery, and especially in terms of water supply, was a big problem in municipal areas all over the country.

“AfriForum identified the need to establish local branches in communities across South Africa, empowering them to address such important issues.

The branch in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) tackled the water crisis situation with huge success, which is an example of how communities can demand their constitutional rights at municipal level,” said Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum. Once a branch reaches the 1 000 member mark, a full-time manager can be paid to solve a crisis or ensure management and maintenance.

“Without intervention from AfriForum, the water crisis would never have been solved. We provided the framework and plans to the municipality, and it is their responsibility to ensure that the water supply is sustainable,” said Schultz. Although his patience was sorely tried throughout the daily battle of the past years, the handing-over event on 24 July was rewarding for Shultz. All the old boreholes south and southwest of town have been refurbished.

“When these boreholes are all on stream, pumping hundreds of thousands of litres back into our water supply system, along with the already-linked existing boreholes, our reservoirs will be constantly full and the town should have a consistent supply of water daily,” said Schultz.

Five of the 10 old boreholes are already pumping.

The other five await electrification by the Makhado Municipality. After intervention by AfriForum, the electrification is back on track. “I have given instruction that the electrification must be done by Friday this week,” said Mutshinyali.

het Du Plooy gesê. Hy is van mening dat die munisipaliteit intussen op die vorige waardasierol met die vorige tariewe behoort te werk. “Die raad moet nie die huiseienaar ekstra belas as hulle ‘n moontlike tekort aan kontantvloei het nie,” het Du Plooy gesê.

Die Soutpansberg Belastingbetalersvereniging (SBBV) het reeds aan die munisipale bestuurder, mnr. Sakkie Mutshinyali, ‘n kommunikasie gestuur dat hulle verwag dat die vorige waardasierol moet geld, totdat die regte prosesse gevolg is.

“Ons eis dat huiseienaars belas word op die vorige rol se waardasies, al sou die nuwe tariewe dan daarop geld,” het me.

Inga Gilfillan, voorsitter van die SBBV, gesê.

Intussen het die Makhado Munisipaliteit eensydig sekere huiseienaars se nuwe waardasies minder gemaak, ten spyte daarvan dat hulle aanvanklik talle huiseienaars se besware afgekeur het. ‘n Eiendom in Kroghstraat, wat met die nuwe waardasierol

van R1.5m na R2.5m opgegaan het, se waarde is afgebring na R2m, alhoewel die eienaar se beswaar nie gehandhaaf is nie.

In Rooibokstraat het ‘n huis se waardasie van R450 000 na R1.3m opgegaan. Op die nuutste munisipale rekening is die waardasie afgebring na R800 000, wat die eienaar voel is billik. ‘n Huiseienaar in Celliersstraat was bly dat die waardasie van R1.3m na R900 000 laat sak is, sonder dat ‘n amptelike beswaar eers ingedien is. Nog ‘n huiseienaar in Vorsterstraat, wie se huis vir R2.2m gewaardeer is, het beswaar aangeteken, maar dit is nie gehandhaaf nie. Op die rekening is die waardasie nou R1.5m.

“Dit is nog steeds te veel en ek gaan voort met die appèlproses,” het dié eienaar gesê.

Provinsiale AfriForum koördineerder mnr. Morné Mostert het hierdie week inwoners aangemoedig om met die appèlproses voort te gaan indien hulle meen dat hulle huiswaardasies nog steeds te hoog is.

Following the burglary at the Van Zyls’ in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), where it is suspect­ ed that they were made to sleep deeply by inhal­ ing the smoke of a burnt CD, the Zoutpansberger put this theory to the test. (See article on p. 3).

First, a cigarette lighter was used to try and burn a regular CD. This proved ineffective as the CD only melted a little bit, with a little bit of smoke. It became apparent that a bigger flame was needed, because as soon as the lighter flame went out, the CD stopped smoking.

A second theory, that burglars burn Doom insecticide and a CD to intoxicate home owners, was tested. Sprayed onto the CD, however, the Doom was not flammable at all.

Next the newspaper entertained a third idea that an even bigger and hotter flame was needed. Petrol poured onto the disk, however, also proved to be ineffective.

The flames melted the CD, but did not produce smoke or reduce it to ashes. Not even a fuel-soaked rag, rolled up in the middle of the CD, produced any positive results.

According to a quick Internet search, there is no proof that a burnt CD produces toxic smoke – perhaps only in large amounts. The local police also confirmed that burning a CD as a burglary aid might be nothing more than an urban myth.

According to information provided by the police,

there have been cases were burglars might have used some kind of industrial gas – but reported cases are few and far between.

The Zoutpansberger traced a more plausible theory in an article that appeared in the West Cape News in February 2011, written by Nombulelo Damba.

In this article, a self-confessed burglar demonstrated to the newspaper how he used a sleep-inducing smoke, from a muti mixture, into victims’ house before breaking in and stealing their belongings.

The robber said he used the smoke made of a powder that contains hyena tail, a bit of soil from a grave and a secret mix of herbs. This smoke he blows into the house by burning the powder in a rolled up piece of paper. There might not be any scientific proof about the intoxicating properties of grave soil and hyena tail, but herb mixes can be bought locally from pharmacies and traditional healers, or can even be home-grown.

Examples of home-grown herbs that can help one sleep include kanna, passion flower, henna and Artemisia afra (Wilde Als).

Perhaps burglars burn their secret mix on a CD as to not leave a burned patch as evidence, or perhaps they have just learnt to move around like cats, without making a sound…

SEPTEMBER • MOTH’S GOLF DAY The MOTH’s

Turbi Hills Shellhole in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) will be hosting their annual Golf Day at the Soutpansberg Golf Club on Saturday, 27 September.

The format of the game will be a four-ball alliance and the entry fee for the four-player teams is R1 500 per team. The entry fee includes, among others, green fees, space to display advertising material, evening meal and prizes for each player.

All players will, however, be responsible for their own caddy fees and refreshments.

Registration takes place from 08:30, with tee-off at 10:00. The maximum handicaps for players with no handicap are 18 for men en 24 for women. The prize giving will start at 18:00.

Kwansuis vir selfverdediging ... absurd! Indien dit die geval is, beteken dit hy weet presies wat gaan gebeur en dan word onskuldige kinders weer in die spervuur geplaas ten koste van die vrot appels!

Ons as ouers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt wat die skool wil maak werk en dit weer in die spogskool verander soos wat dit voorheen was (en ek dink ek praat vir baie) is nou gatvol, om dit in plein Afrikaans te stel! Ons wil die goeie terugsit en die slegte elemente weghê en ons sal aanhou baklei totdat dit gebeur!

Daar moet net ‘n “zero tolerance” gesindheid ingeneem word, en dis klaar!

Daisy en Plore is saam met Bernard in Johannesburg, besig om die lewe van die sosiale vlinders van nader te bekyk. Plore is beïndruk met Bernard se kragtige motor, maar die omgewing omvou hulle en begin die skanse van bravade aftakel. Gaan Daisy hier kan aanpas?

The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will, for the third year running, be participating in National Science Week (NSW).

NSW 2014, organised by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), will run until 9 August.

The week, an initiative of the DST, is a countrywide celebration of science, involving various stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activities during the week. The aim of SAASTA is to advance public awareness, appreciation and engagement of science, engineering and technology in South Africa. SAASTA is a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

NSW is run in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province. This year’s theme is

Today’s science, tomorrow’s world.

The SAC will focus on astronomy, space technology and mathematics during the week. Various activities will be run, including the opportunity to look at the sun, moon, Saturn, stars and deepsky objects through a telescope, discussions and demonstrations, and handout material, including posters and career information, will be available.

Gruelling Akkedis around the corner It is almost time again for the annual Akkedis Mountain Bike challenge with races over dis­ tances of 60km, 35km and 10km respectively on 9 August.

The gruelling 60km race will start and finish at the Hanglip Komatiland Forestry office outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt) with a circle route, while the 35km race will be an intermediate to moderate route with marshals at every critical intersection. If the 60km and 35km races do not appeal to you, there is always the 10km race. The entry fee for the 60km, 35km and 10km races are R150, R100 and R50 respectively.
