Jan se hand was egter in die pad. Heidi-Lene Jonck with her sister, Elze-Marie du Preez, are looking forward to celebrating Heidi’s birthday this year at the fundraising golf and fun day being held by the Soutpansberg Golf Club on 22 March.
Help to make her birthday special By Jo Robinson
A fundraising golf day is going to be held to help with the travel expenses for Heidi-Lene Jonck, who, at the moment, has to travel to Pretoria every two weeks for surgery to keep her throat open. Cherise Botha, who is arranging the day, told the Zoutpansberger that the emphasis of the day was fun. “It is not only to try and help to lighten the load that Heidi-Lene and her sister Elze-Marie du Preez are dealing with of having to travel to Pretoria every two weeks, but also to celebrate Heidi’s birthday,” said Cherise. “She spent her birthday

last year in the intensive care unit.” On 11 March last year, Heidi-Lene was involved in a boat accident on the Albasini Dam. She received a serious blow to the head that rendered her unconscious and led to her face being submerged for long enough for brain damage to occur. Following that, a breathing tube was left in her throat for weeks longer than it should have been, leading to a severe build-up of scar tissue in her throat, which almost caused her to suffocate last year. Heidi-Lene is now waiting for a life-saving operation that will remove the scarred portion of her oesophagus, but in the meantime, she has to have a temporary operation every two weeks to keep her airway open. “It has been a long and hard year for both sisters,” said Cherise. Heidi-Lene is making progress with learning to walk again, and with relearning how to read and write and is staying positive about her future. The Soutpansberg Golf Club is hosting the fundraising and fun day on 22 March. It will only be nine holes played in the afternoon, followed by a braai and prizegiving, which is all included in the price of R1 000 for a four-ball alliance. “Everyone is welcome, though,” said Cherise. “Anyone can join in and family members not playing golf can join the braai for a fee of R65 per person. Just come for the day, and to spend time with Heidi to celebrate her birthday. Businesses are invited to put up gazebos and advertise their products or services for a little sponsorship on the day. Fees and donations can be paid into the golf club’s account, using the reference ‘Heidi’s Golf Day” and their name or send proof of payment to 082 818 2315. Payments can be made into Standard Bank account number 331660806 in the name of the Soutpansberg Golf Club, branch code 051001. For more information, phone Cherise at 082 818 2315.
Johan is die hoof by Eltivillas Primary en Elsa was vir jare ‘n onderwyseres by ons skool. Arina was in 2006 in Graad 7.
Christiaan was ‘n ingenieur wat werksaam was by ‘n plaaslike myn.

“Buitengewone” weerlig slaan ses beeste dood Deur Jo Robinson

Road blocks part of DAFF efforts to stop FMD By Andries van Zyl
The FMD road block at the Beja turnoff on the R524 road to Thohoyandou was found completely abandoned last Friday amidst ex tensive efforts by the government and industry stakeholders to stop the spread of the disease. Photo supplied.

A disease-management area, roadblocks and an intensive vaccination programme are among the steps taken by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to minimize the spread and to eradicate the foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease outbreak in Vhembe. This according to a joint statement by DAFF minister Senzeni Zokwana and the Red Meat Industry, following a meeting in Pretoria on Monday with the government and industry stakeholders on the crisis. The FMD outbreak at Sundani Village near Vuwani at the beginning of January caused South-Africa to lose its recognised FMD-free-zone status with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). This has had a devastating effect on the trade in cloven-hoofed animals and their products from South Africa. While some countries instituted official bans, trade was further disrupted as a result of the inability to certify any exports that require FMD-free-zone attestation. “I must commend the contributions so far from the industry, in particular at technical committees’ level. The update we are giving today is the cumulative work of the collective past two weeks,” said Zokwana. Zokwana said that his department had updated the country’s trade partners on the FMD outbreak in South Africa. He added that a request had been made to trade partners to consider the continuation of trade in safe products. Guarantees were also provided for products that do not pose a risk of transmitting the disease, such as heat-treated meat and dairy products, deboned and matured beef, scoured wool, salted hides and skins, livestock embryos and pork products from known FMD-free pig compartments. “Following the sharing of update reports with trade partners, trade restrictions on the export of processed products have been relaxed by many trade partners. Trade in safe commodities to direct neighbouring countries have largely been accepted and, where necessary, negotiation of new health certificates is underway,” said Zokwana. He added that good progress had also been made with negotiations to re-open markets for deboned matured beef, processed dairy products and processed hides and skins to the other African countries, the Middle East and the Far East. According to Zokwana, up to 30 January this year, four positive locations for FMD in Limpopo Province had been reported to the OIE. The animals affected by the outbreak are cattle kept in rural villages with communal dip tanks and grazing. The affected villages are in close proximity, within a 20km radius. The estimated number of cattle in the 20km around the affected villages is 15 000, of which 4 500 are in the FMD-free zone. A disease-management area has subsequently been declared, namely the area enclosed by the R81, R36, N1 and R524 roads. “A Joint Operations Committee (JOC) was established and meets on a daily basis, consisting of traffic, departmental and district disaster management, police, industry (the National Animal Health Forum, Feedlot Associa-
tion) and provincial and DAFF veterinary officials. The JOC has facilitated the placement of 15 road blocks at strategic points to restrict the movement of animals,” said Zokwana. One of these road blocks was established on the R524 between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou at the Beja-turnoff. The main aim of these roadblocks and management area is to see to it that no cloven-hoofed animals are allowed to move within, into or out of the area. “…there is a complete standstill of cloven-hoofed animals. Movement permits that were previously issued for this purpose were withdrawn. Products from cloven-hoofed animals may be allowed to move within this area, but movements out of the area will be considered on merit and only allowed with permits issued by the local state veterinarian and in compliance with the conditions of such permits,” said Zokwana. Since the vaccination of cattle commenced on 14 January, starting with the cattle in the affected villages as well as cattle in the 20km radius around the affected villages, a total number of 10 000 cattle were vaccinated and marked by the beginning of the week. “Culling of affected or in-contact animals in the area is at the moment not advocated,” said Zokwana. Emphasising the importance of containing the spread of the disease within the FMD management area once again, Zokwana said that the movement of cloven-hoofed animals (including wildlife) and unprocessed products out of the Mopani and Vhembe Districts, as well as the Molemole Municipality of Capricorn District, was discouraged until further notice. “As mentioned above, it is only products processed using methods validated to inactivate the FMD virus that are safe to be moved out of the area,” said Zokwana. At face value, the government appears to have gone out of its way to curb the spread of the disease effectively. Some farmers, however, are of the opinion that, at ground level, this enthusiasm to stop the spread of the disease is not shared. Specific reference was made to the FMD-control road block on the R524 at Beja some 30km from Louis Trichardt. The road block was set up about two weeks ago. The road block was, however, found completely deserted last Friday, apparently for the whole day. The Zoutpansberger informed the department of this and asked for a response on the status and functionality of this and other road blocks in the management area. In response, departmental spokesperson for the DAFF Mr Steve Galane said that the situation around the Makhado road blocks in Limpopo had been resolved. Money to man the control point seemed to have been the problem. “Our HOD Ms Maisela made a commitment to the SAPS about their payment. All the road blocks have veterinary officials and traffic police. The SAPS in Makhado will also deploy police to the road blocks. They have officials who will be doing spot checks and we requested officials to be deployed to the road block for 24hrs [period]. No road block was left unattended without the presence of veterinary officials,” said Galane.
Bank employee arrested after money disappears from client’s account Court News
A 47-year-old bank employee in Musina was arrested last week by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for allegedly defrauding a bank client of more than a million rand. Mpho Melbah Ndou appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was granted R5 000 bail, after which her case was postponed until 5 March
this year. Ndou was arrested last Tuesday. “The consultant, who is employed by Standard Bank in Musina, allegedly invaded a client’s bank account early this month and fraudulently transferred sums of money into different fictitious accounts, where her fellow syndicate members would then allegedly make withdrawals,” said Hawks spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke. According to Maluleke, the
Hawks’ investigation has thus far uncovered that the consultant allegedly authorized replicated bank cards with a valid pin code on the victim’s account to enable the looting to appear as if it was the client’s transactions. “The suspect is likely to face charges of fraud‚ money laundering and contraventions of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act. Additional arrests cannot be ruled out as investigations continue,” said Maluleke.

CASA indicated that online gambling (apart from sports betting with a South African licensed operator) was totally illegal in South Africa, even if the website was hosted beyond the country’s borders. Transgressors are liable to face prison sentences of up to 10 years, fines up to R10 million or both such prison sentences and fines if convicted. The association regularly calls for individuals and businesses to be aware of possible online gambling operations in their area and urges them to report any suspicious activities. In an interview with the Saturday Star newspaper last September, CASA CEO Themba Ngobese told the publication that the National Gambling Board estimated that about 4 000 jobs were being lost because of the illegal gambling industry. He told the paper that this industry was responsible for funding other criminal activity as the money made from these illegal establishments could not be kept in banks. Ms Molepo urged members of the public to report any such illegal establishments. They can contact the Law Enforcement Unit of the Limpopo Gambling Board, led by Dr P Masogo, on 015-230 2300. When contacted about Cybernet, Dr Masogo insisted the matter was under investigation by the LGB and the Makhado police. “It is very bad to the economy of Makhado and to society in general
because it is not licenced,” he said. Asked as to how many cases of illegal gambling the board had investigated in the past six months and if they had closed down those outlets in the province, Dr Masogo only indicated that a journalist should visit the LGB for an interview.
From the outside no sign boards or any other indication that a gambling outlet is being operated from this premises in Songozwi Street, Louis Trichardt, can be seen.

What matters is taking part. For more information about Louis Trichardt’s own park run, dates and times, phone Jaco at Tel 084 616 2299.

Verskeie ander is ernstig beseer. Foto verskaf.
Maandag was ‘n spesiale dag vir Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se nuwe Graad 8’s.
Foto verskaf.

“Not many might be aware that town is being overcome by termite nests” Termite Warrior from Louis Trichardt, writes:
I
think our readers are not aware but our town is being overcome by termite nests. Please go and have a look in especially the North-Eastern part of our town on the municipal pavements in the municipal parks, on the municipal grounds along the perimeters of our town especially in the Forestry Road-park you will see these termite nests. I attach for you a pageant of shocking photos of some of these nests that is hair raising. Any building within 100m of such a termite nest and especially the roof trusses and woodwork are in serious danger of being eaten and totally destroyed within months. Each inhabitant should urgently take his torch and inspect his ceilings and roof trusses. If you don’t do it, it could all be gone soon and your corrugated iron roof will only hang by its roof nails, ready to collapse. The termite nests on private property are the responsibility of the owners. But what are the municipal councillors and officials doing about the termite nests on their pavements, parks and A pageant of photos of just a few of the public lands? termite nests found in municipal parks and on Mr Editor, if you have the time, please get pavements in Louis Trichardt.

Twenty-five years ago, the Zoutpansberger informed farmers of a warning issued by the police, especially in the Witvlag area, to be on their guard against a man who was showing up on farms on the pretext of searching for the graves of his ancestors. The man introduced himself as Samson Nephawe, although, according to reports at the time, his real name was Samson Magagadele. Allegations were made at the time that, rather than honestly looking for actual gravesites, this person was somehow creating graves with the purpose of later “reclaiming” land on the strength

of their being there. In recent years there have been claims and challenges for the royal throne of Venda, including one by Chief Tshidziwelele Nephawe of the Vhangona clan, who argued in court papers that “he was the great-grandson of King Tshidziwelele III, who was assassinated between 1759 and 1800”. He further stated in the same court papers that the current King Toni Mphephu-Ramabulana’s clan only arrived in the 1750s after his clan had already settled in the area”. So, while Samson Magagadele was foiled in his plans to plant fake royal tombs in the bush, the truth is that there very probably are real ones just waiting to be found

While most children went on holiday in December of last year, Champions Combined Academy outside Louis Trichardt’s Grade 5 pupils decided to rather spend their time collecting clothes for the needy. With their teacher, Ms Naomi Sibanyoni, as guide, they collected enough clothing to fill eight boxes. The clothes were handed to local angels for the needy Helena and Pierre van den Heever on 24 January. “With this we would like to thank all of the people involved in this project. Teaching our children to give to those in need is a very important part of our school Champions Combined Academy’s values,” said the school. Pictured to the far left is school principal Sonja Prinsloo. Next to her are Helena and Pierre van den Heever and at the back is Naomi. Photo supplied.
Also 25 years ago, the Zoutpansberger shared the news of the swearing in of the new Head of State of Venda by acting Chief Justice H J Liebenberg. Major General T G Ramabulana filled the position previously held by Major General Gabriël Ramushwana, who had moved on to become the commanding officer of the National Peace Keeping Force. Major General Ramushwana had led a bloodless coup d’etat, as the Venda Defense Force Deputy Chief, to great celebrations by the residents of Thohoyandou who did not at all want to be part of any “homeland”. Being a part of the population of an independent homeland in South
Africa back then meant the loss of South African citizenship, and the reality that South Africa was the only country in the world who recognised the “sovereignty” of them.

Lesley Gaigher of the Louis Trichardt SPCA told the Zoutpansberger that they have “…hit a bit of a rough patch, with finances dwindling.” Tens of thousands of rands are needed every month to do the volume of good work that they do to help animals of all descriptions. For those residents who do not yet follow their updates on their Facebook page, Lesley has shared a few of their upcoming fun fundraisers. The first one is called ‘Donate on Your Birthday’. “Hey, February birthday peeps,” said Lesley. “Love only grows by sharing. You can have more for
yourself by giving it away to others. February babies kinda just get this, right? Being born in the month of LOVE, how can it be any different?” The SPCA is asking those born in February to donate on their birthdays and to send high-definition photos of the furry loves of their lives to be featured on the SPCA Facebook page. Then there is their Valentine’s Day Hamper. The hamper is full of delectable sweets, bubbly and bubblebath. A voucher for an intimate dinner at home and something delicious for dessert. All this and much more is on offer to the highest bidder. Lesley said that “You can battle it out online right up
until midnight on 13 February. The bidding will open at R600 and rise in increments of R50 (minimum). Only bids on a post on the SPCA Louis Trichardt’s Facebook page will be taken into consideration.” Finally Lesley encourages people to remember to get their orders in for Woofentine’s Cupcakes before 9 February by emailing yolandacronje8@ gmail.com. Keeping up with technology We need to pause a bit and look at the processes used by early photographers. Up to the mid-1850s, the scene was dominated by the daguerreotype process. Daguerreotypes were easily identifiable, because they were shiny and had to be viewed at an almost 45-degree angle. Some of the sizes were as small as shirt buttons. The last successful daguerreotypist to reach Cape Town was probably John Paul in February 1851. He introduced daguerreotypes up to 8 inches (just over 20cm). An English scientist and inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot, introduced the calotype process in 1841. This technique makes use of a sheet of paper coated with silver chloride. When the sheet is exposed to light in a camera obscura, those areas hit by light become dark in tone, yielding a negative image. One of the big advantages of the calotype process is that it allows the photographer to make an unlimited number of copies, using a simple salted paper process to make contact prints. This was not possible with daguerreotypes. The setback for this type of photography was that Talbot had strict patent rights and it was fairly expensive. The earliest record of this type of photography being used in South Africa dates back to 1854, when Oliver Lester used it at his Jetty Street studio in Port Elizabeth. The year 1851 saw another Eureka moment for the photographic industry when Frederick Scott Archer introduced his wet-plate collodion process. For the next almost 50 years, this process became a popular choice for professional and amateur photographers. The process was a lot less expensive than the daguerreotype and more immediate, with exceptional detail and contrast. Space unfortunately does not allow a detailed description of how the wet-plate collodion process works. It was described as a “wet” process, because from the time when the collodion was poured onto the plate (glass or metal), the photographer only had about 10 to 15 minutes to take the picture, develop the image and then “fix” it with chemicals such as potassium cyanide. It was a process that required a lot of skill and experience. For our story, however, we need to move on, as Hendrik Potgieter died in 1852 and the first records of wet-plate collodion being used in South Africa dates back to 1854 when a Cape Town-based photographer, William Syme, advertised that he was prepared to take photographs using the collodion process. The last process used by photographers in the mid-1800s
The photo of Andries Hendrik Potgieter and his wife. Is it possible that this photo was taken before his death in December 1852? that is important for our story is the carte de visite. This format was patented by the French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819–1889) in 1854. In short, it entails an albumen print mounted on a piece of card the size of a formal visiting card—hence the name. In South Africa it became popular in the 1860s. It is recognisable by the smaller size (normally 4x3 inches, or 10cm x 7,6cm), printed on cardboard.
Why is this important? We have reached the end of the second article, but we need to summarize what we have found and what we are looking for. Firstly, we know that the photo of Potgieter must have been taken between about
November 1846 and December 1852. We also know that it must have been taken by a daguerreotypist, since the other processes were either introduced after Potgieter’s death or were not available here. In next week’s final chapter, we need to look at the movements of the commandant. Was he close to Cape Town or Port Elizabeth during the last few years of his life? Was the photo perhaps taken when he visited Mozambique? Scrutinizing the photo to see what process was used is also important. Could it perhaps be a copy of an original daguerreotype? To be continued … (Most of the information used in this article comes from the book, Silver Images, by Dr AD Bensusan, published in 1966 by Howard Timmins.)

LTT XI demolish Eltivillas in local cricket derby Cricket News
The Louis Trichardt XI side scored a fairly comfortable victory over Eltivillas on Sunday, thanks to an excellent opening-partnership century between Dewald Joubert and Craig Viljoen. Eltivillas batted first in this local derby and their opening pair, Imran Yusuf Bathia (58) and Moin Giza (32), got them off to a good start. Munaf Patel scored a patient 21 from 47 balls, but after his departure, wickets collapsed in quick succession. Only Sufiyan Bux (10) could also manage double figures. The last wicket tumbled in the 40th over with the total on 169. For Louis Trichardt, Dirk van den Berg did most
of the damage with the ball, taking 4/29 in 7.4 overs. Craig Viljoen (2/26 in 10 overs), AJ Fourie (2/22 in 7 overs) and Vimal Shah (2/33 in 9 overs) also had success with the ball. The home side clearly had no plan to be overly cautious with their batting and Dewald Joubert demolished the bowling attack. His 91 runs (not out) came from only 51 balls and included six sixes and six fours. On the other side of the crease, Craig Viljoen also showed no mercy. His 57 runs came from 37 balls and included eight fours and one six. When Craig lost his wicket, Dirk van den Berg joined Dewald in the middle. Dirk added 17 runs (scored from 18 balls) and he was still there when the required total was passed in the 18th over.
On 11 January, teachers from Ridgeway Independent School, Ridgeway College and Ridgeway Preschool in Louis Trichardt all got together and spent a team-building day at a venue in Schoemansdal. Activities for the day centred around relying on each person’s particular strengths, supporting others and conquering personal fears. Pictured is Ridgeway preschool teacher Jenny van der Merwe, showing no fear as she leads the way across the ropes. Photo supplied.

Bruce Fordyce to compete in town’s first official parkrun Health and Fitness
Nine-time Comrades Marathon winner Bruce Fordyce will not only attend but is also expected to take part in Louis Trichardt’s first ever parkrun this coming Saturday, 9 February, from 08:00. The concept of parkruns is simple: You turn up every Saturday and run 5km, or if you are a junior, then 2km every Sunday. How fast you go does not matter and neither does what you are wearing. What matters is taking part. The first ever parkrun was in Bushy Park, Teddington in the United Kingdom, when 13 intrepid parkrunners got together on 2 October 2004. The volunteer team included Paul and Joanne Sinton-Hewitt, Duncan Gaskell, Simon Hedger and Robin Drummond. It took nearly two years before parkruns spread beyond Bushy Park. Wimbledon was the chosen venue and they had to prove to themselves that they could manage more than a single event at a time. This was the start of the ‘cookie cutter’ approach to events that would allow parkrun to expand. To begin with, they collated all results on paper and the finish tokens were washers from the local hardware store! But eventually they ramped up the technology, and so the parkrun registration and barcode result system was born. Now, many thousands of runners are processed, websites are updated, and emails are sent each week. The parkrun community is growing all the time – but everything is still based on the simple, basic principles formed from the start: weekly, free, 5km, for everyone, forever. Fordyce is the CEO of Parkrun South-Africa. He A map of the parkrun route, starting and introduced the parkrun concept to South Africa in 2011, with the first run taking place at Delta Park finishing at the tourism information centre.
