Lazy or victims? By Jo Robinson
“Why is our tax money being spent to pay people to lie around and sleep under trees all day?” This is the question asked a little over a week ago by a distressed Levubu resident, Lana Hoffman. She contacted the paper with what began as a complaint that Louis Trichardt residents may be accustomed to hearing and repeating quite often. A group of people dressed in bright orange overalls with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) logo on their jackets had been spending their days mainly lying in the shade on the sidewalk close to Rev Petrus Kriel’s home (on the G road). This situation had been ongoing for several weeks, Hoffman told the newspaper, and many residents were complaining about this blatant squandering of taxpayers’ money. Not only were these people lounging around all day, long after they had been dropped off every morning and before being collected every evening, but they were making fires by the roadside to cook meals for themselves. The area around them was looking messy and residents were getting angrier and angrier. Eventually, Kriel decided to approach these apparent layabouts and enquire directly from them as to the reason for their behaviour. When Kriel shared what he had been told with Hoffman and other interested Levubu residents, shame set in. He was told that these people
had been employed by a contractor to work for a six-month term as part of the government’s EPWP programme. However, they continued, this contractor had not paid them their wages for two months. Terrified of not showing up every day for work, in case their employer then had an excuse to charge them with desertion and, in so doing, not pay them at all, they had tried to show up daily. They were simply waiting every day, they said, hoping to get paid. The previously angry Levubu residents were now filled with empathy and shame at their instinctive reactions, and Hoffman and Kriel agreed that people should not be overly quick to judge others merely on appearances. They requested that the newspaper follow up on this issue, with the hope that, by doing so, help would be forthcoming to the unpaid and desperate workers. When the paper finally did manage to contact one of these workers on her cellphone, the newspaper was informed that all was well as the contractor had now agreed to pay them, followed by an SMS on 6 November that they had finally been paid. The contract has apparently expired for both the EPWP workers and Levubu. The newspaper will continue to follow up on the story and try to contact the contractor. After getting paid, one of the EPWP workers said that no further need existed to phone their employer. The EPWP programme was launched by the government in
2004, stemming from the Growth and Development Summit (GDS) of 2003. At the summit, four themes were adopted, one of which was ‘More jobs, better jobs, decent work for all’. The aim of the programme is to provide poverty-and-income relief for the
unemployed. They are mostly local, lowskilled persons. These EPWP workers are employed on a temporary or on-going basis, either by the government, by contractors, or by other non-governmental organisations under the Ministerial Conditions of Employment for the EPWP or
The sight of what Levubu residents believed to be a group of municipal workers having a snooze in the shade begun an investigation that, at this point, appears to point to the non-payment of innocent employees. Photo supplied.

Rioolstortings in Louis Trichardt is deesdae ‘n alledaagse gebeurtenis. Foto verskaf.

Die ses mans wat gearresteer is, is later geïdentifiseer as Simon Mahlangu (36), Welcome Sifiso Nzima (40), Andrew Moagiemang (44), Anthony Letsoalo (39), Thabo Mabula (34) and Godfrey
Hlongwane (40).
Women’s federation is looking for male rolemodels for Men’s Day Competition
International Men’s Day takes place on 19 November this year, and the theme is positive male rolemodels. The objectives of International Men’s Day include a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting
positive male role models. The Louis Trichardt SAVF wants to use this opportunity to honour positive male rolemodels in our community. “We invite people to nominate any male person, be it a husband, father, son, grandfather, teacher or any other male person. Send us a photo and in fewer than 300 words, describe why this person is a pos-
itive role model to you. Entries can be submitted electronically (louistrichardt.swo@savf.co.za) or manually at our offices,” said the SAVF. The closing date is 16 November and the winner will be announced on 22 November. For more information contact Friede Meissenheimer on 071 628 7949 or 015 516 3841.
BUSINESS talk Riaan thinking big for RC Solutions By Jo Robinson
Owned and run by Riaan Hamman, with the support of a team of seven others, RC Solutions opened for business in Louis Trichardt in March this year and is already doing well. “Even though this business is just beginning, we are not thinking of it as small. This is something I have always wanted, and it has taken off. We offer the best online prices, and are currently selling our products countrywide. Customers in Louis Trichardt can also purchase straight from our online shop, but local buyers get free delivery on all goods. Our aim is to still offer that direct person-to-person experience in an online world. In that spirit, we operate a live chat feature on our website that is manned 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. Feel free to call any time with queries or questions,” said Riaan.
The company specialises in corporate, home and gaming hardware and software, website development and consumer electronics. They have an active online site where they sell computer and gaming components. Riaan says that they can repair, upgrade or fully install computer servers and assist clients with their networking requirements and website start-ups. RC Solutions are online gaming specialists, currently supporting gamers all over the country while also being active sponsors of competitors. Games that they are involved in include PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) and they have already registered for the team of five that they are sponsoring in 2019 to play CSGO. As well as managing all aspects of the business on a daily basis, Riaan says that he also is a website designer.
Sharlene Bird is responsible for all administration and is also in the office every day. Vernon Bezuidenhout runs the gaming division and Erik Welman heads logistics and marketing. RC Solutions also supplies and installs closed-circuit television systems. They build computer work or gaming stations according to customers’ requirements. What next for three lawmen convicted of corruption? By Andries van Zyl
What comes next for the three Limpopo lawmen who were each sentenced to lengthy prison terms after an eightyear-long court battle that saw them exhaust all possible avenues to avoid jail time? Former senior regional magistrate Tshirufho Ronnie Rambau (58), regional court prosecutor Estene Anver Willemse (42) and attorney Tivoneleni Edmond Lubisi (38) spent their first night in jail on the evening of 25 October after being sentenced by Magistrate E K Patterson in the Regional Court in Musina. Rambau was accused of accepting a bribe to influence a court case, while Lubisi and Willemse also faced charges relating to corruption and conspiracy to commit corruption. They were arrested after a successful police undercover operation in February 2010. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), members of the police’s Counter-Intelligence Unit in Pretoria applied for and were granted authority in terms of section 252A of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 for the setting of the trap to investigate the suspicion of corrupt activities at the Musina Regional Court. This was based on information received from informers. The authorisation was granted, and the arrest of a deep-cover agent was arranged on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. After the arrest of the deep-cover agent, a second agent approached Lubisi to act as the deep-cover agent’s attorney. The deep-cover agent was released on bail shortly thereafter. During the days that followed, several conversations and meetings were held between Lubisi and the two agents. They were informed that the matter could be
placed before a specific magistrate (which turned out to be Rambau) and that a pre-arranged sentence could be imposed in court, against payment of a certain amount of money to all the role players. The NPA stated that, in total, R27 000 was paid over by the agents to Lubisi. The deep-cover agent once again appeared in the Regional Court at Musina on 5 February 2010 and was convicted and sentenced to the pre-arranged sentence. Lubisi was the attorney on record, Willemse was the prosecutor and Rambau was the Regional Court magistrate. Following the court appearance of the deep-cover agent, the three accused were arrested. A sum of R8 900 of marked money was found in possession of Lubisi, R100 of marked money was found in possession of Willemse and R5 000 of marked money was found in possession of Rambau. Following their arrest, Rambau, Lubisi and Willemse were charged with the contravention of various sections of the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act 12 of 2004 (POCA). The charges related to the corruption that took place on 5 February 2010. In addition, each was charged with being in a corrupt relationship for the period between 1 January 2008 and 5 February 2010. Lubisi faced four charges of corruption, Willemse three charges and Rambau two charges. The respective charges alleged that the accused’s corrupt activities were aimed at Rambau’s passing pre-arranged sentences. On 28 June this year, the three were all convicted by Magistrate Patterson, with sentencing postponed to 25 October. During sentencing two weeks ago, Rambau was sentenced to 15 years each on two counts of accepting a gratification (bribe) as a judicial officer. Willemse was sentenced to 10 years for conspiring to
commit corruption and 10 years each on two counts of giving a bribe to a member of the prosecuting authority. Lubisi was sentenced to 15 years each on four counts, namely contravening the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, giving a bribe to a judicial officer or alternatively conspiracy to commit corruption, and two counts of giving a bribe to a member of the prosecuting authority. Although Rambau received a total sentence of 30 years, Willemse received 30 years and Lubisi 60 years, Magistrate Patterson ordered that all sentences should be served concurrently. This means that Rambau and Lubisi will each serve 15 years, while Willemse will serve 10 years. All three were denied leave to appeal against their sentences by Magistrate Patterson. In the years following their arrest and leading up to their conviction, Rambau and his co-accused tried every trick in the book to have the case against them get thrown out. They brought several applications to this end, including bringing an application to have the criminal cases against them dismissed in October 2012 as they claimed that the State’s evidence and witnesses were lacking in credibility. When this application was dismissed, Rambau himself brought an application that the presiding officer in the case, Magistrate Patterson, should withdraw from the case as “he had befriended some of the state witnesses” and that this friendship could influence the outcome of the case negatively for Rambau. This application was also dismissed and Rambau then turned to both the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeals, which also dismissed his application to have the magistrate withdraw from the case. Rambau then appealed to the Constitutional Court, which also dismissed this same

Fourth annual auction a huge success
By Jo Robinson
(Filippense 3: 14,15). Heiligheid is God se standaard (1 Petrus 1:14,15). “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2 NKJV). - 079 516 8303

Louis Trichardt residents arrived in style on 2 November at the fourth annual SPCA auction, with wallets and hearts wide open. Northgate Lodge’s hall was packed on the night when bidders showed their support for the animals and the SPCA team that looks out for them. As well as the impressive items offered on auction, trays of delicious snacks were offered to guests seated at tables decorated with large freshly cut proteas and dark-chocolate cupcakes. The hugely talented and good-hearted Jak de Priester put on a show, with songs and humour that had the crowd whooping out loud and waving cellphone lights in the air. Alicia Thomas of the Louis Trichardt SPCA said: “When we first contacted Jak, it was already quite short notice, but we had heard about his charity shows for SPCAs in Gauteng, called “Gee jou hart vir liefde”, so we thought we had nothing to lose and gave him a call. Miraculously, he was still available, and he agreed to do the concert for us, even though he had to fly to Cape Town first thing the next morning. We are so grateful to this Jak de Priester clearly has a soft spot for little ones as well as animals, and took time to pose for special human and his incredibly kind heart. Thank you to Jak de Priester and his whole team; it was such a pleasure working with you all.” Auctioned items reached top prices, with enthusiastic bidding for a variety of things, including an electric guitar signed by Karen Zoid for R15 500, both sponsored and bought by Letitia Weyers in a great show of support for this cause. Phillip Potgieter won the bid for the sought-after 200 grafted Beaumont Macadamia trees for R14 000. A few mystery boxes were also auctioned off, and they proved to be not only worth the laughter their names elicited, but also their thoughtfully-put-together contents. People particularly appreciated the Mother-in-Law Hamper and the Hangover Hamper. Finally, DJ Jonty supplied the music for those who wanted to dance the night away to do just that. The organisers and participants agreed that the evening had been a great success for all, but especially for the animals. To view a video of the stylish event by Leslie Gaigher, visit https://www. WAT GEBEUR?
11 REMEMBRANCE DAY
On Sunday, 11 November, the South African National Defence Force, military veterans and civilians will spend two minutes remembering those who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country as part of Armistice Day, also called Remembrance Day. This year will see the 100th anniversary of Remembrance Day. At 05:00 on Monday, 11 November, 1918, a document was signed that brought an end to the First World War. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was supposed to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives. To pay homage those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs) of Louis Trichardt will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 11 November at 10:30 for 11:00 at their Turbi Hills Shell hole at 66 Burger Street. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

A loving farewell to the legendary Sue-Anne Cook By Jo Robinson
The passing away of Sue-Anne Cook on 1 November has resulted in outpourings of love and respect, not only from the local people who knew her well and interacted with her daily, but also people from afar. Sue-Anne has left behind a legacy that will live on at Vhutshilo Mountain School, which she founded and was the director of, as well as those who are helped by Positive Care, a non-profit organisation (NGO) that she co-founded, and in the hearts of all whom she touched with her love and care over the course of her life. She lived in Venda for more than three decades, but in 2002 Sue-Anne started a crèche in the Nzhelele Valley, based on a sudden and irresistible impulse. A journey began that would touch the lives

of many suffering people in ways that they could never have imagined. In that year, she also met the child who would become her beloved daughter, Vhuhuwavho Nevhungoni. Nevhungoni, fondly known as Woo, was a two-year-old toddler then. Her biological mother had already passed away, and her grandmother was not well, but from the day that the little girl wrapped her arms tightly around Sue-Anne’s neck, refusing to let go, the two of them became family—mother and daughter. Sue-Anne never intended for the small crèche that she ran for three children from her mobile home for two years to become an NGO. She soon realised, though, that it would never be the income-generating business that she had originally thought it might be. The crèche quickly became a preschool for vulnerable children, particularly AIDS orphans. Over the years, it grew into the fully established centre that it is today, where children who do not have HIV and whose parents pay fees, learn side by side with children who have no parents, no money, and are also infected with the most dreaded virus in Africa. Kathutshela Nemafhuohoni (Khathu) was SueAnne’s protégé at the school for many years, with Khathu supporting her in all functions as administrative and financial manager and the two of them running Vhutshilo together. The school and its outreach programmes will continue exactly as Sue-Anne wanted it to. The life that Sue-Anne led was an eventful one, although not easy. She refused to give up, however, and was named in the 2013 Mail & Guardian Book of South African Women as one of South Africa’s extraordinary women of that year. She celebrated her ups and downs and won the hearts of many along the way, unfailing in the sharing of anything she could give or do to help those who could not help themselves. Her actions gave many people the hope of life, which is what the word Vhutshilo means in English, and the reason that she chose this name for her school - Life. Vhutshilo has been supported by many organisations over the years, and still is, thanks to Sue-Anne’s tireless dedication. Studies have been

of her passing]. We were her neighbours at Thathe Vondo. She taught my kids to swim. She had a horse called Samson, who stuck his neck through the window to participate in conversations. I rode him in Santa guise for the kids’ Christmas party. Wonderful memories.” On their Facebook page, Vhutshilo Mountain School say their farewell with “…Suzi will be sorely missed, not just by her family and friends, but by the community of Tshikombani and the hundreds of children whose lives she changed. She will be remembered not only for her selfless commitment to bettering the lives of vulnerable children, but also for the quirky sense of humour that endeared her to us all. Muya wavho u edele nga Mulalo, Vho Suzi. Your legacy lives on, but we will miss you dearly.” And finally, from Woo, Sue-Anne’s beloved daughter: “Mom was suffering, and I could see it in her. Yesterday [1 November] was a long and painful day. It tore parts of me I never knew could get torn apart. Things took a turn for the worst and the hospital staff, her nurse, and a couple of doctors tried all they could to help my mother, but I could tell people knew what was to come. The staff were truly amazing. “Heather and her sister Anthea were there for me throughout if all, and I was grateful to have such loving company surrounding me, because honestly in amongst all her pain and suffering, I felt like I was going to burst. I could not handle watching her in such a state, and then and there we let her know that it is okay to let go and she’s suffered for too long. I thanked her for being such an amazing mother and I told her over and over again that I love her. She got to hear me saying all of those things to her while she was going, and I think it made her feel better. “She said to us, ‘I’m ready. I want to go.’ She put up a fight but then she just closed her eyes and slowly went. She had people who loved her and whom she loved around, and I think that was all she ever wanted. What a woman, what a woman!” said Woo. Details of services for Sue-Anne can be found on Vhutshilo Mountain Schools’ Facebook page.

conducted there because of the success achieved in integrating people with HIV/AIDs and not only allowing them to integrate into society, but to become successful, happy individuals. The children at Vhutshilo, who themselves try to educate others, are not ashamed of either their health or their financial status. Vhutshilo gives them what Sue-Anne intended for them to have all along dignity and life. Born on 4 September 1955, Sue-Anne was 63 when she succumbed to the cancer that had caused her much pain for the past year. Her most fervent prayer was to see her daughter Woo a little more established as a young adult. Gillian Enslin, a Louis Trichardt teacher and friend to both mother and daughter, said that when Sue-Anne brought Woo weekly to board at Ridgeway College from Grade 8, this was costly for them both. “Woo was very unhappy in hostel and missed Sue-Anne so much … Later, I taught Woo in maths and life sciences, where she was exceptionally hardworking and responsible. I used to take Woo to the hospital to visit Sue-Anne when she had to be admitted, so I got to know her mom then. I also took Woo home to Thathe Vondo for weekends occasionally, when Sue-Anne was not well enough to drive. They lived in a simple little house in a beautiful garden near to the lake. That was where Woo grew up and became such a loving, responsible person.” Sue-Anne’s niece, Trudi Winton, had this to say: “Years ago, when I was just starting my journey as an adult, over a glass of wine, my Aunt Sue-Anne shared with me words of wisdom that have stayed with me … She said, ‘All you need in life is a bottle of red wine, a loaf of bread, and friends and family to share it with. If you have this, then you have a full life’. When times have been tough, these words echo in my mind to remind me how blessed I am. Sue-Anne was one of the bravest and most inspiring women I have ever known. RIP, Aunty Sue.” Dr Murray Hofmeyr, the National Director of the Study Trust from 2008 and a lecturer in theology and philosophy at the University of Venda for 18 years prior to that, said, “We are very sad [to hear

Polly needs a lot more than just another cracker
They were designed to fly free. The NSPCA is against caging any bird, but if you already have one, make sure to give it a lot of attention, love and care for its wellbeing, says Lesley Gaigher. Photo: Elsie Went.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) does not promote keeping birds in cages, and so no articles by them can be found where they encourage parents to buy budgies for their children. The local Louis Trichardt SPCA agrees, but, says the SPCA’s Lesley Gaigher, since people are already keeping pet birds and parrots in cages, she will share some tips on their upkeep. “In the movie The Shawshank Redemption,” says Lesley, “Ellis Boyd Redding says ‘Some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knew it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they are gone’.” Lesley says that while this quote might resonate with bird lovers who agree that keeping any creature in a cage for its whole life, especially one designed to fly, is cruel, letting captive-bred birds free to fly away is not an act of kindness. They are not equipped to fend for themselves in nature and will either die of starvation or be killed by a predator. The NSPCA recommends that people stop encouraging the trade in and breeding of birds for the pet market by not purchasing them. “Polly needs way more than a cracker,” says Lesley. “Keeping a pet parrot is a lot of work. They require more attention than any animal you’ve ever kept. They can be super destructive, very messy and extremely noisy. Their diets are particular and will very likely be costly. Parrots need more space than the average pet shop cage, and toys last about a day with them. Depending on the species, you’re looking at a 10- to 80-year commitment. Your parrot will most likely outlive you, and you will need to plan for Polly’s well-being in your will,” says Lesley. Budgies, cockatiels and other small birds are often purchased for children by loving parents because they are cheap. Children will often quickly lose interest in these “new toys” and so they will be left in cages that are not cleaned and without having fresh food and water replaced every day as they should be. “It is not a great financial loss if these
birds die, which is an attitude that is absolutely not acceptable according to the SPCA, who say that all animals have rights to safety, comfort, food, and happiness,” says Lesley. The SPCA’s advice is not to purchase a bird at all, but for those who already have, Lesley encourages them to ensure that their pet bird is given love and attention every day, not kept in a cage all the time, and properly fed after carefully researching what they require in their diets daily. Birds do not need seed and water alone; they have other needs as well. In their natural habitat they eat insects, fruit and nuts, among other things. “Birds are social creatures and being alone is unnatural and stressful for them. They should be able to interact with their human ‘family’ rather than being confined to a cage all the time. “If you are going to keep any bird, make sure that you keep it kindly and responsibly,” says Lesley. “You have to consider carefully why you want to keep a bird. Especially a parrot. If you just want to keep something beautiful, get a stunning orchid instead. You must bear in mind that they are individuals with personality traits, and like humans, they are a product of their environment. If they are mistreated, you will definitely have your hands full. If you have the inclination, the time, and the money to keep these creatures, they will certainly return much more than you invest, and can prove to be the best companion you have ever had. Just remember to take care of them and their future existence if anything should happen to you,” says Lesley. The SPCA reminds Louis Trichardt residents to contact them when finding any wild animal or bird that is either injured or otherwise unable to care for itself. Report animal abuse of any kind when you see it. “Look after all of your pets,” says Lesley. “Think about their happiness and well-being before buying animals that might end up spending all of their days in a cage. Rather adopt a puppy or kitten from the SPCA.” The SPCA would like to remind all pet owners to take extra care of their safety when celebrations involving fireworks take place and to remember that panicked animals can hurt themselves.

Wanneer jy dus hierdie slang teëkom, bly so stil as moontlik staan, totdat die slang wegbeweeg.
082 058 7601.
Foto’s verskaf.
Pure plesier tydens kaskardag Skolenuus
