While elsewhere the days grow shorter, the opposite is happening in Zuidas. Office workers are trying to meet their year-end deadlines, schools are preparing for mid-term exams, the hospitality industry is gearing up for the Christmas season and the retail industry is also anxiously awaiting the hustle and bustle of the holidays. The only exceptions are probably the area’s gyms: they’ll have to wait until January for the usual steady stream of new customers thanks to New Year’s resolutions. ‘Elite sports are mostly self-centred, but with medicine I can make a difference for other people’ Ilse Paulis, Professional rower (Olympic Gold in 2016)
At 26, Ilse Paulis is a professional rower who in 2016 was awarded a gold medal in Rio de Janeiro. These days, she’s once more training hard for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Apart from working daily to achieve her athletic goals, Ilse is also studying medicine at the VU in Amsterdam. Athletic, smart and funny, this star talent is also unusually down-to-earth. Hello Zuidas sat down with Ilse to talk about her life as an athlete and student and to hear what she thinks of Zuidas, where she combines her life in sports and science. EYE FOR THE FUTURE De Puls is a sustainable urban biotope on the Zuidas. The higher you go inside De Puls, the more the accent shifts from people to plants and animals. On the ground floor on the south side of the building the municipality is creating a park, while in the middle section between the two towers, there will be a green roof garden. In order to keep Zuidas accessible, it is essential to reduce car traffic. The De Puls mobility plan therefore focuses on maximum use of public transport, cycling and walking. The car park will only be available for electric shared cars.

MINUTE? Smoking in Zuidas: What’s your opinion? Did you join Stoptober? Stoptober is an initiative to get people to quit smoking over 28 days during October. Cigarettes have become an issue of growing debate. As of 1 October, they’ve been banned at Amsterdam UMC, and now ACTA, O2 and the AUAS have followed suit. The VU campus will be going smoke-free sometime in 2020 (read more about this on page 36). We talked to four local professionals about their stance on smoking in Zuidas, and their experiences.
RENE TETTERO & LEON KEIJSERS Engie Rene: ‘I don’t smoke, but I do feel it’s important that ENGIE spotlights quitting smoking and Stoptober. Inside the WTC Amsterdam, where we work, they also discourage smoking. Smoking is prohibited in shipping now and people have to keep a 7,5 metres distance from the entrance to light up their cigarette. As a non-smoker, I approve.’ Leon: ‘I do smoke and am consider quitting. I know it’s a really dumb habit.’
GIDEON LEENDERTSE Greenberg Nielsen ‘One month a year we put an extra emphasis on physical fitness and cutting down on alcohol and tobacco. Though nobody is under any obligations, we do see people drink more nonalcoholic beverages at our after-work drinks on Fridays, though admittedly fewer people attend. Fortunately, we don’t have many smokers here at Greenberg Nielsen, so we don’t have any specific rules.’

DEMI HORSTMAN & NATALJA KERKMAN De Blauwe Engel Demi: ‘At the café we don’t really notice any difference during Stoptober. Lots of guests here smoke, and after a Friday night there are easily a hundred stubs around the door. Inside it’s all smoke-free, of course. Natalja: ‘Staff of De Blauwe Engel smoke out of public view, that’s decorum. Personally, I think smoking is bad for health and a waste of money.’
JESSICA BEKKER HELLO ZUIDAS ‘To better address topics of concern to facility managers and office managers in the Zuidas district we decided to set up the ‘FM Platform Zuidas’. The first session was held at CIRCL, about smoking. We looked at the question of how employers and building managers deal with facilitating a smoke-free environment. We also discussed Amsterdam policy on smoking. ABN AMRO, VU Amsterdam, GGD Amsterdam and Artis presented their policies and experiences with a smoke-free workplace.’

MOBILITY
On 10 October BYCS hosted an inspiring event for Zuidas employers to promote commuting by bicycle. More bicycles in Zuidas could transform the area, ensure that it remains accessible and help keep employees happy and healthy. BYCS wants to offer businesses support in order to maximize the huge potential of bicycles. The event was intended as a kick-off session, to introduce people to the power of the bicycle and to offer useful solutions to current problems. It was also a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of others. In advance, agreements were made with bicycle suppliers about what they could and would offer. The results of both sessions were used to create a custom-made range for employers. 50 X 30

EVA LAUS, PROJECT MANAGER AT VU AMSTERDAM, SABINE RUMMENS, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT ACTA AND DYONNE BROERS, DIRECTOR OF HEALTH AT ACTA
Jentien Vermeulen (MD, PhD) at Amsterdam UMC and projectleader of smokefree UMC performed research on smoking in people with a serious psychiatric disorder. Jentien: ‘We found strong clues to indicate that smoking is a risk-factor for developing psychiatric problems. Especially in this group of patients, it is very important to discourage smoking and treat people who aim to quit. We hope to improve health of all patients, including those who smoke the most. Following the example of the nation-wide ‘Stoptober’ campaign (the annual event to encourage people to quit smoking) Amsterdam UMC now have decided to piggyback onto this well-known campaign and offer patients, employees and students help to quit now. How? By offering a programme for those who wish to quit smoking. Jentien: ‘Amsterdam UMC is the largest hospital in our region and sets an example in our city. We work with many other healthcare, education and academic institutions and this is one way for us to lead by example. We see that announcing a smoke-free site is a major incentive to quit smoking, many employees have already signed up for the support options we offer as an employer. Some have already quit on their own or with help from their general practitioner.’

Prominent law firms such as Allen & Overy and Van Doorne have already reached the tipping point, with more than 30% female partners, according to diversity experts. ZUIDAS SWITCHES OFF Last month, a group of VU Amsterdam students specializing in Science in Society, conducted research into light pollution in Zuidas. Light pollution is a nuisance caused by too much light during the night. It affects both the sleep cycles of the area’s residents and those of the neighbourhood’s animals such as herons, bats and insects. The students began by investigating which businesses were already doing the right thing by turning their lights off at night. What motivated them to take this step? And how did they go about it? After all, turning off the lights may seem like a small thing, but you only need to drive through the area at night time to see that apparently it’s not that easy. Based on the information obtained through their research, the students plan to make a number of recommendations so other companies will find it easier to turn off their lights as well.
