‘Closer to the music’ is the theme of this year’s Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, expected in August. It’s a festival I look forward to all through the spring and summer, because it brings us talented young musicians. What could be better than enjoying the lazy days of summer, paired with music on unexpected locations in Zuidas, when places like the Postcode Loterij open their doors and ABN AMRO hosts concerts in its own courtyard? Ever listened to classical music at Strand Zuid? Or how about listening to jazz at the Zuidas Botanic Garden? Hello Zuidas members are invited to enjoy a special performance by soprano Kirila Kraal and her quartet at Loyens & Loeff. To find out what’s going on near you, go to www.grachtenfestival.nl. Food conglomerate Kraft Heinz, most famous for its Heinz Ketchup, but also the company behind household names such as Honig, Brinta, De Ruijter, Venz and Karvan Cévitam, recently relocated its EMEA headquarters from Zeist to Zuidas. Great news for our district! Its employees are already settled at NoMa House, where the company occupies floors 4 to 7. On another note: has the recipe for the iconic Heinz Ketchup ever changed in the last 100 years? ‘Haha, nope! Our ketchup has been around over 140 years, but the essential recipe was never changed. RODERIK BRASSER SERVICE MANAGER, ACCENTURE TECHNOLOGY Fourth year participating in the run. ‘I have a vivid memory of my manager basically handing me a fait accompli. He simply had me and some other colleagues signed up. As it turned out, it was an inspired idea. Even without good training or preparation, we still had a great day, and from that moment I was hooked. The second year a client invited me to train together. So I signed us up with a team and we got in shape. The day of the run was pretty intense: I ran the 16K run with a couple of colleagues, and an hour later I was back at the starting line with my clients to do the 6Kas well. Since then, the run has been a kind of annual party that my colleagues, clients and I all work towards. Every Tuesday we pound the pavement together. I’ve set up a training programme to convince the wafflers, and my goal is to have everyone run that 6K - even if I have to carry them the last few steps myself.’
JASPER HUNTING COMMERCIAL MANAGER/SENIOR SPORTS MARKETEER, HOUSE OF SPORTS First year participating in the run. ‘Because of my work, but also out of personal interest, I’m very much involved in the Zuidas Run. My focus is on getting as many colleagues, companies and teams to take part. As a co-organizer of the event, we’re doing all we can to make this tenth edition into another big success. So for me, it’s about time I joined in the actual race. It helps that I’m fairly athletic. Right now I’m in the middle of tennis tournaments for which I practise two or three times a week, and I also try to get in a loop around the Vondelpark at least twice a week. Nothing beats heading outdoors for a while after work, clearing your head and letting thoughts about work slide away. That always boosts my mood heading into the evening. Am I aiming for a specific time? Not really. The most important thing for me is that it will be a good run, with a good vibe, and with a great after-party at the end of it.’

THE OFFICE OPERATORS TOUCHES DOWN AT NOMA HOUSE Zuidas - The Office Operators has just opened a fourth location in Amsterdam’s Zuidas district. Its portfolio at NoMa House (2,500 m²) offers luxury private offices, flexible workspaces and modern meeting rooms and includes reception services. Upon opening, several units had already been leased, to Fields Group and Kemperink Maarschalkerweerd, among others. The Office Operators runs a network of 27 locations with flexible work and meeting spaces in Amsterdam, Schiphol, Amstelveen, Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Arnhem and Brussels.

NS Stations has acquired 5,400 m² to house its facilities. According to NS (Dutch Railways), after renovation the range of shops and amenities will be on a par with that found at the central stations in Utrecht and Rotterdam. Designs for the new station were drawn up by ZuidPlus, a consortium of Fluor, Heijmans and Hochtief, which will be building it as part of the Zuidasdok project. Commuters will have to be patient however, as the delivery date for the whole project will not be before 2028.

‘If it won’t work at home, it won’t work at the office’
ANNEKE WIELING
Protiviti Netherlands advises a prime portfolio of Dutch and global clients across various market segments. Based in Zuidas for ten years now, this year the company had to make a choice: to relocate or to renovate? Protiviti opted for the latter, giving their floor at the SOM building on Gustav Mahlerlaan a full-scale facelift. Active in 70 offices in over 20 countries worldwide and with a workforce that tops 4,500, the company’s Dutch team brings together experienced, driven management consulting professionals with specific expertise in Internal Audit, Risk, Business & Technology Consulting services. They work together in an informal setting imbued with a strong sense of team spirit, enterprise and professionalism. That informality is key, says Anneke Wieling, Managing Director of Protiviti Netherlands. Hello Zuidas caught up with her at their modernized office.

Protiviti is a global consulting firm that delivers deep expertise, objective insights, a tailored approach and unparalleled collaboration to help leaders confidently face the future. Our consulting solutions span critical business problems in technology, business process, analytics, risk, compliance, transactions and internal audit. We are committed to attracting and developing a diverse workforce of professionals that share the common value of collaboration. As an organization, we believe that by teaming together, with each other, and our clients, we can see beyond the surface of changes and problems organizations face in this fast changing world to discover opportunities others might miss and face the future with greater confidence. Our Mission: Teaming with clients to protect and enhance enterprise value by identifying, anticipating and solving critical business problems.

CLOSING THE DEAL ON SMART LOGISTICS As Zuidas continues to grow, the supply of goods and services to and from the district is expanding too. Hello Zuidas, GBC Zuidas, Bycs and the Accessibility Task Force have joined forces in ‘Smart and Sustainable’, an urban logistics programme designed to maximize access to Zuidas and reduce environmental impacts. A first step was taken during the GBC Zuidas CEO Breakfast, where GBC Zuidas signed the Zero Emission Urban Logistics (ZES) Green Deal on behalf of its members. This entails a commitment to contributing to the quest for smart solutions, whether it’s by grouping deliveries at a hub location or by making the switch to bikes and e-transport. Programme initiators will be investigating the best approach to each traffic flow. The signing of the Green Deal cements broader support for these efforts.
FLYING TO WORK BY E-BIKE Early May, 20 energetic local professionals joined in a new GBC Zuidas e-bike trial, which was part of an effort by GBC Zuidas to motivate people in the Zuidas district to commute to work by e-bike instead of going by car or public transport. Among the participants was Menno van der Linden of the Zuidas Amsterdam Development Office, who lives in Haarlem and traded public transport for an e-bike. ‘Cycling to Zuidas was brilliant! Just 40 minutes from Haarlem – and I went even faster than by train. Other road users aren’t quite used to seeing these bikes speed by, though. On the final night I forgot to recharge the battery, which meant pedalling the last few kilometres the old-fashioned way. That was tough going!’ GBC Zuidas offered participants the use of QicQ bikes free of charge. If there is sufficient interest, another trial will be set up in 2019.
A NEW GREEN GENERATION Green Business Club (GBC) Zuidas believes sustainability should be an automatic part of business processes for the new generation in Zuidas, and wants to get this group even more actively involved in sustainable projects. To reinforce and expand this part of its mission, GBC Zuidas will be launching the GBC Academy this summer. The Green Business Challenge, Circular Office Supplies (in which students advise companies on circular procurement), the Consultancy HUB (in which students help companies solve sustainability challenges), student thesis research on energy conservation issues, and work placements at GBC Zuidas will all be brought together in the new GBC Academy. Interested to find out how the GBC Academy can benefit you and/or your company?

MEMO BOARD CROWDFUNDING FOR INNOVATIVE RESEARCH Dr Ed Eringa and Dr Yolande Appelman of VUmc have launched a crowdfunding campaign in collaboration with the Nederlandse Hartstichting (Dutch Heart Foundation) . Their aim is to raise money for their research into a new imaging technique for small arteries. Their proposed research is said to be groundbreaking. To this purpose, they are currently looking for donors both large and small. The Hartstichting has pledged to match the funds collected for their research. You can support their work by contributing via the website! Go to: https://steunmijnonderzoek.hartstichting.nl /project/appelman-eringa.
SPOTTED: NESTING OYSTERCATCHERS! In spring 2017, Breevast installed a large living roof on one of its properties in Zuidas, made possible through a municipal subsidy and a contribution from Waternet. Not long ago, a nesting oystercatcher was spotted in this green rooftop park! This is the time of year in which oystercatchers are busy hatching and rearing their chicks. Nesting pairs as well as larger fledglings can now be seen and heard, loudly and clearly, in tidal flats and inland areas. But they are also spotted, with increasing frequency, in urban locations, where oystercatchers often nest on rooftops. According to the Netherlands Association for the Protection of Birds, flat rooftops are offering the fast-declining oystercatcher population a lifeline in towns and cities, where they and their nestlings are safe from predators like cats and foxes.
