CHRISTA WIERTZ-WEZENBEEK • PRESIDENT OF THE AMSTERDAM DISTRICT COURT

‘When I look from my window, I feel proud’

Christa Wiertz-Wezenbeek, president of the Amsterdam District Court At the end of 2020, the Amsterdam District Court will be moving into a new building, which is currently erected on the site of the old courthouse on Parnassusweg. Construction got underway some time ago and the contours of the building are taking shape. In the meantime, the court is conducting business in temporary premises on Frederik Roeskestraat. The new courthouse is injecting a massive impetus for the further development of Zuidas as a whole. BUILDING THE FUTURE

THE PLATFORMS AND THE TRACKS ARE GONE

TIMELINE All the foundation piles are now in the ground. The first section of the tunnel roof was supposed to be pushed into place on the night of 8-9 June, but this proved infeasible. The massive concrete slab (70 metres long, 12 metres wide, 2 metres thick) is now killing time on Arnold Schönberglaan, behind the Streets of the World exhibition, until a date can be determined to slide this first part of the tunnel roof into place underneath the tracks. That will require another set of road and rail closures.

ADDITIONAL TUNNEL FOR CYCLISTS, PEDESTRIANS AND WILDLIFE While we’re working on this additional passageway beneath Amsterdam Zuid Station, we’re also building the Vivaldi tunnel not far away. ING SUCCEEDS ABN AS THE BEST BROKER IN BENELUX Zuidas - In this year’s Extel Awards, Bijlmer-based ING once again unseated ABN AMRO as Best Benelux Broker. The industry award is based on a survey held among clients, including analysts, asset managers and companies. ABN and ING have been trading first place in the Benelux for many years running, with ABN taking the title in 2018, and ING in 2017. Neither one of the Dutch banks is a global contenders. Exane BNP Paribas was voted Best Developed European Broker, and UBS won Best Overall Research.

‘SMES NEED TO INVEST IN INNOVATION’ Zuidas - With the current strong growth trend unlikely to hold over the mid-long term and costs looking set to continue rising over the years ahead, small and mediumsized enterprises are advised to invest in innovation, cautions accountancy firm SRA, following its annual survey into the financial position of the SME sector as a whole. ‘SMEs have built up a buffer, so now is a great time to invest in further growth’, advises SRA board member Harry Marissen. ‘IT is a part of that equation, because data are crucial for organizing processes more efficiently, staying on target and innovating.’

PUBLIC SPACE

GOT A

MINUTE? In mid-May, Zuidas celebrated the official opening of the new and improved Vijfhoek park! This pentagonally shaped park is the capstone on a long development project. Redesigned as part of construction of the underground Strawinskylaan bicycle parking facility, the park has now been given back to residents and their kids and, of course, to the Zuidas office crowd looking for a spot to relax and recharge. The municipality hopes the park will become a place that brings the Prinses Irenebuurt and Zuidas communities closer together. What do people on the street think of the results? ARJAN TOOL WITH GUIDE DOG HEBAS External clerk at the Amsterdam District Court ‘I can’t see the park, of course, but I can use it. I don’t walk my dog here though; I do that on Minervalaan, near the bridge across Stadionkade. But I do sit here when the weather is nice. The park’s redevelopment made it tricky for us, because there were different routes and new closures every week. Plus, Hebas hasn't been with me for long, so it was also a challenge for him. But it was certainly good training!’

JEROEN PONSEN Works at TD Bank N.V. in WTC Amsterdam ‘It’s sad that so many trees were chopped down, but we got something nice in return and it still looks very green. I eat my sandwich here occasionally with a colleague. It’s a pleasant spot to be. I wouldn’t change anything about it now, because it’s got just what a city needs: sun, shade and quiet.’

CEES KUPPERS AND NINA FRANCOLINI Pupils at the Amsterdam International Community School Cees: ‘I live near here, so I know this spot well. Before, it was more of a football pitch, but oddly shaped. I think it looks nice now, but it’s quite grey. And will that sand actually be used? It would be cool if the square could be a bit greener, with maybe a permanent artwork in the middle. I do come here regularly during lunch, but I think the park could be made more attractive.’

KIMA ELIYO Trainee at Hartman LMH ‘I’m in my fifth month of a work placement at Hartman, a civil-law notary firm. I love being able to sit here in the park, and lots of my colleagues come here too, especially when it’s nice out! Because it’s not so busy here, it’s very restful. Our office is super hectic, so it’s a relief to be able to come here for some down time. We like to sit on the benches outside Rituals sometimes, or, if it’s raining, we seek refuge in the WTC lobby.’

RJB GROUP: ‘VALLEY WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US’ Zuidas - RJB Group of Company’s principal reason for acquiring the Valley building in Zuidas was less the building’s green design than the opportunity to invest in new residential stock in Amsterdam’s Financial Mile. However, it will be very much a ‘trophy building’, said RJB Board of Directors member David Beesemer during a session at PropertyNL Lounge. Valley is a new landmark in Zuidas, rising along Beethovenstraat across from the ABN AMRO head office. Designed by MVRDV, the complex has 196 apartments plus a commercial programme, including 22,000 m² for offices, 3,500 m² for restaurants and retail, and a 1,200 m² museum. Belowground there will be a 375-space car park (on 20-year lease to Q-Park) and at the very top an 800 m² sky bar. Of the office space, a lease for approximately 16,000 m² has already been sealed with John Fentener van Vlissingen’s BCD Travel.

MYRIAD SIGNS FOR 2,700 M2 IN SYMPHONY TOWER Zuidas - Myriad has signed an office lease for approximately 2,700 m2 in the Symphony Tower on Gustav Mahlerplein. The company offers pay-television services through subsidiaries in sub-Saharan Africa and is also active in e-commerce and other internet services, content-related protection technology and print media operations. Joining forces for efficient waste processing at New Amsterdam A group of businesses in the New Amsterdam building have been working to optimize a smarter, more sustainable and more efficient approach to waste processing and disposal. The key is joining forces, thus consolidating suppliers and allowing for sustainable procurement. Calvin Choi, the owner of the Market33 food court, reached out to Hello Zuidas to ask if we could set up a case study on this initiative. That led to discussions with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, which deployed research student Stijn Kuhne to tackle the project. We talked to Calvin and Stijn about their findings. BEACH CREATURE

Walking around Zuidas, you may have noticed some large artworks on display. The sixth edition of ARTZUID, aka the Amsterdam Sculpture Biennial, recently kicked off, to continue through 15 September 2019. This larger-than-life art trail offers eighty artworks to admire along a 2.5 km route. The heart of the expo is in the tree-lined Apollolaan and Minervalaan neighbourhood, part of Berlage’s historic ‘Plan Zuid’. Set along the leafy lanes are theatrical structures with modern and contemporary figural sculptures, alternating with interactive installations. The ARTZUID Art Route is free and open to the public 24/7. A section of it runs through Zuidas, where a variety of works are on view, including one of Theo Jansen’s world-famous Beach creatures.

PAULINE LEMBERGER

During May the Zuidas Business Ride sped through Zuidas for the annual racing cycle tour in which numerous local companies take part. Entrants once again put pedal to the medal for a worthy cause – this year, to raise money for WereldOuders. Part of the international NPH organization, this is a charity devoted to the millions of children in Latin America who grow up without a loving family and parental care. They have nowhere to call home, don’t get enough to eat, don’t attend school and have to work to survive. Their prospects are grim: a life of poverty. What these little ones need is family, and WereldOuders gives them that family. VU Giving successful start-ups room to grow on the VU Campus For most people, the name Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) is synonymous with the campus and all of its students, and that of Amsterdam UMC (VUmc), the hospital. What many people don’t realize, is that both institutions are also home to dozens of scientists and students who are working daily on important research and major issues facing modern society. Some research projects or ideas have such an impact that with some help, they can be used in our society. Demonstrator Lab is the entrepreneurship laboratory at VU Campus where students or researchers are able to transform ideas into a tangible product or service.
