“A KEY OBJECTIVE IS SYNERGIZING THE DIVERSITY THAT ALREADY EXISTS IN ZUIDAS” Annelies van Eenennaam – Executive Board Chair at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a premier school for the arts, training talent from around the globe for artistic careers. Recently, the academy completed a major addition to its premises on Fred Roeskestraat. Executive Board Chair Annelies van Eenennaam regards this expansion as part of her personal legacy. A shared past and a common future Exactly 55 years ago, I became aware of the fact that my mother and my father share more or less the same history. A history in which slavery looms large. A history of people who were enslaved and of people who kept slaves. Though never explicitly mentioned before my sixth birthday, terms like discrimination, preferential treatment, white and black, and colonialism stick out clearly in my memory. I remember thinking: there’s something wrong with this picture. As time progressed and shaped my consciousness, I started paying closer attention to what was happening around me. In primary school, my teachers talked about myriad issues surrounding the legacy of enslavement. Martin Luther King’s name came up a lot. The emotions it elicited were tangible. Eventually, my parents told me much of the history of slavery as it unfolded across Curaçao, Suriname, Saint Kitts, Nevis, England, the Netherlands and the United States. Every Sunday, my dad would take my sister Netty and me on a tour of the island’s history, ending up at one of its beautiful hotels for a fantastic lunch. In 1982 I came to the Netherlands to study. I was eager and excited, bound for the drama academy in Maastricht. My time there wound up being a kind of snapshot that would shadow me all my life. Partway into the programme, I got an interim evaluation advising me to quit the programme. The reason: my ethnicity. “Due to your black skin colour, Dutch companies will not accept you into their ranks. It would be better for you to return to the Caribbean.” The advice hurt. What I was experiencing, I realized, was exclusion. And so my activism was born. I began a struggle for myself and my fellow black people. Since then, my activism has rooted deep, and the rest is history. Years later, I met Rufus Collins. A black theatre maker

John Leerdam is a Dutch film and theater director and former politician. He was a member of the parlement for the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) from 2003 to 2012.

from the United States, he urged me to broaden my knowledge of the history of slavery. He offered me a work placement and an opportunity to learn more about black theatre and the legacy of enslavement – among other places, in Haiti. His production of The Kingdom was an eye-opener for me, and oh so instructive! That past is after all also threaded with my parents’ shared history. After this, I decided to do my principal work placement in New York, specializing in ‘black theatre’. Recently, my own ABN AMRO Bank publicly apologized for their involvement in the slave trade, plantation slavery and the trade in goods produced by enslaved people. Their apology for the suffering of those who were enslaved, the ripples of which are still felt by many people today, is an act of compassion and a first step towards mutual solidarity. It is a basis from which to strive for the power of diversity and inclusion, and on which to build a shared history that enfolds 180 nationalities. This is how shared history becomes common history. ABN AMRO Bank’s apology further reinforces my belief in the need for a formal national apology. As we contemplate the future, Zuidas could be the symbolic catalyst. Developments in the creation of a National Slavery Museum can show us the way. ABN AMRO has taken a crucial step. Which other multinationals in Zuidas will follow their lead? I am excited to see what happens next!

Business In The Spotlight

Enterprise Netherlands

RENTING IS THE SMART WAY OF SHARING When Thomas Wolters, director of the Dutch division of Enterprise, first set out to introduce the US car rental company’s concept in the Netherlands, he never would have dared to dream that after opening multiple locations across the country the franchise would continue to expand. Its newest location in Zuidas is proof of an ever-growing company, but also of how very rapidly the world of modern mobility is changing as car sharing and rental become more and more popular. Thomas told us all about Enterprise Netherland’s plans and their outlook on the future of mobility.

Hello People

HELLO PEOPLE

GOT A MINUTE?

Talent comes in so many varieties and can be expressed in all kinds of ways – personally, professionally, and in hobbies. That got us to wonder: are people more inclined to showcase their talents in the workplace? We heard from five workers and visitors in Zuidas about their talents and whether they’re expressing them on the job.

Yolandi Jordaen (59) “I am from South Africa originally, but have been living in the Netherlands since I graduated from university. I’m very dedicated to my job as an accountant, I work well under time pressure and have a keen eye for detail. These things are crucial for my job, because an accountant has to make sure everything adds up and is done correctly. And all within a specific time frame. I enjoy my work because it lets me express my talent and do what I’m good at.”

Linda Schot (41) “I graduated from VU Amsterdam with a degree in art history and I am working for the municipality now, as an area coordinator in Zuidas. Our organization compiles reports coming in from the district, so the municipality can take action on them. My job is also about connecting people within the community. If someone has ideas or plans I can help with, I step in to make a link. I consider uniting people to be my personal talent and I am able to express it in my job. It’s what I get to do every day.”

16

Hello People

Loes Mohringer (49) “I started out with a teaching degree in physics, and then got another in remedial education from the University of Amsterdam. At the moment I’m working as a secondary school physics teacher and a technological design team manager. Being a good organizer, distilling the information that’s out there to the level of a teenager and explaining complex topics clearly is my main job. Besides that, being good at sport and accepting of everyone, and giving everyone a chance, is what I consider to be my talent. I teach physics at school and it can be a tough subject for many pupils, but with the use of I’m able to coach pupils through it and help them pass with high marks.”

Martijn van der Pauw (34) “My masters in sustainable energy put me on the path to a job as a business development manager for solar energy projects. Latching onto a specific goal and then building and expanding it in the form of a project is something in which I can invest my enterprising personality and motivation. It’s a talent I can only really use in this job, and it’s actually precisely what is called for: listening a lot, taking people seriously and then taking the next step.”

Femke Schuddebeurs (44) “After grammar school I finished a medical biology degree at university. I apply my talents daily in my job as a biology teacher at a secondary school. It is really great to connect pupils with each other. I’m also good at organizing and presenting. These talents serve me well in the classroom. Organizing excursions is also something I enjoy doing. It’s a fun and educational activity for pupils and for me. My job guarantees I won’t lose sight of my talent.”

Zuidas Home Tour

ZUIDAS HOME TOUR

“I jumped at the chance to live in Zuidas” Zuidas is a distinctive part of the city and in high demand among house hunters. Between now and 2040, some 8,000 to 9,000 new homes will be built here. Once known mostly as an office location, more recently Zuidas has been shedding that image in a complete metamorphosis. When Zuidas is finished in around 2040, a projected 15,000 people will call it home. In this section, we ask residents to tell us where they live and how they like life in Zuidas. This time, we talked to Stephanie Mulder (24). She loves the corner apartment she first moved into as a student, with its fantastic view and central location in Zuidas. These days, she’s living her passion for motorsport as a marketeer at the Pon Porsche Dealergroep.

Stephanie Mulder lives in The Gustav

Favourite spot in Zuidas “I often visit Rocycle for my workouts, and Back, which is a healthfood restaurant and one of my favorite hotspots.” Favourite spot/object at home “My favorite part of my apartment is the kitchen, where I enjoy cooking with friends. When I’m home alone, I love lounging around on the sofa. My place has a cabinet that has a special meaning to me. It’s made of wood from a former monastery and handcrafted by my dad.”

Stephanie, tell us something about yourself... “I am from Badhoevedorp originally. When I turned 18 I started studying business administration at the VU. During my third year, I lived in Montréal, Canada, to achieve my minor in marketing. After finishing my masters degree, I started my career as a marketeer at the Pon Porsche Dealergroep where I’m responsible for our dealers in Amsterdam, Leusden, Groningen and Rotterdam.” What brought you to Zuidas? “When I started studying in Amsterdam I wanted to leave home and live in the big city. I didn’t actually move until I was 19, initially with a friend in Oud West. I had a great time living here as a student. A few years later I got the opportunity to move to the Gustav Mahlerlaan, and of course I jumped at the chance. In March 2020 I finally moved to Zuidas.” What makes Zuidas a nice place to live, in your eyes? “I would not have seen myself living in Zuidas initially. But it’s really nice here. Zuidas has many new and cool buildings, which was a big draw for me. Lots of young and nice people reside in my building, so I’m in my element. My apartment has a great view and I can see across the whole district. Zuidas has really come to feel like home.” Is there anything still missing in the area? “There’s less to do in Zuidas at weekends because the area is still primarily oriented to the office rhythm. Now that more houses are being built, I think small businesses are more likely to consider Zuidas as a location. And once we get more residents and places like that in the area, it will automatically become more dynamic during the weekends. Beatrixpark is also a great spot and the perfect place to get a sense of community going. Who wouldn’t love to come to the park with friends on a sunny summer day to check out all the food and beverage trucks?”

Russ Porter has been working in the finance and accounting profession for almost three decades. So, when he joined IMA (Institute of Management Accountants) as CFO and senior vice president last year, he brought years of valuable experience to the table. IMA - the worldwide association of accountants and financial professionals in business focuses exclusively on advancing the management accounting profession by offering members opportunities to keep on learning and advancing throughout their careers. While in Amsterdam for a flash visit to IMA’s European headquarters, Russ told us all about his ambitions and the value of staying on track with the latest developments in his profession. We are in the transformation process now, so we hope to repurpose this first municipal building in the area and plan to relocate there in the summer of 2023. At that point the AICS will be more or less at our maximum capacity to grow and accommodate as many students and families as possible. TIC-TAC-TOE: 75 MID-MARKET RENTAL HOMES IN RAVEL NEIGHBOURHOOD Walk south down Beethovenstraat, underneath the A10 motorway and past the iconic Valley, and you come to an empty expanse. This is the future site of Ravel, a low-traffic residential neighbourhood of some 1,350 predominantly family homes. The first residential complex to be developed here is Tic-Tac-Toe. Designed in earth tones, the building is attuned to its surroundings yet also stands out, thanks to the striking play of exterior lines and eye-catching balconies. But the real distinguishing feature is that all 75 apartments, with an average 80 square metres of floor space, are being marketed first to middle-income households with children. COLLIERS “WE’RE HELPING CLIENTS REINVENT THE OFFICE” Time is the new space. According to real estate consultancy Colliers, maximizing a building’s potential opens up a whole range of possibilities. Aside from that, I am seeing more intrinsically motivated professionals who are trying to change their organizations from the inside. These changemakers can win people over to the story and show that sustainable practice works. Once this realization sets in, you see the impact that companies can make is a good deal greater than people assumed. I envisage impact goals as becoming embedded in the core of every organization and being supported by employees.’’ What is needed to change the economic system? Interview

HELLO ZUIDAS INTRODUCES

RENÉ TEEUWEN Chair of the Zuidas Accessibility Task Force René, could you tell us about yourself? “I started out as a political scientist, but these days mobility runs through my veins. I have wide experience from doing many projects in this field and it’s a domain that really fits me. There is a wealth of developments and innovations. It’s a challenging playing field for people involved and mobility is instrumental in society.” “As well as chairing the Task Force, I am also a mobility broker. The most crucial thing, as I see it, is a sound strategic approach and then the follow-up to a successful roll-out. I tackle this somewhat differently from the customary pathways. I admire people like Elon Musk and, closer to home, Daan Roosegaarde. They’re classic out-of-the-box thinkers who come up with ‘moonshot’ projects but are also down working in operations and persevere for as long as it takes to get the result they’re after. That describes me, too. ‘Never give up’ is my motto. Which may also

MEMO BOARD THE CITY FROM

ON HIGH

On Saturday 26 March, Amsterdam celebrated another edition of its annual Open

Tower Day. Some 13,000 visitors came to admire the city from on high, making the event a soaring success. As the tenth anniversary, this was also an extra special edition. With a grand total of 19 towers opening their doors, visitors not only got to enjoy panoramic views, but also attended talks and joined a variety of guided tours. Five urban sketchers were invited to render the day’s fabulous views from the WTC Amsterdam, and the organizers hosted a photo contest. If you missed this year’s Open Tower Day and the chance to see the city from a more elevated perspective – don’t despair! The next edition is already in the works, though you’ll have to wait until March 2023. It promises to be another fun and festive event, so keep an eye on the social media channels for details.

ZUIDAS SUSTAINABILITY AWARD Hello Zuidas, Amsterdam-Zuidas and Green Business Club Zuidas are joining forces this year to hand out the first-ever Zuidas Sustainability Award. The aim is to reward people and organizations that are actively striving to make Zuidas more sustainable. The organizers invited submissions of innovative and impactful projects, from smallscale neighbourhood initiatives to major building projects to partnerships that are having positive local impact. Anyone and anything that is helping to make the district future-proof in any form was welcome to enter. The presentation ceremony is set for 17 May in Almere. Electric buses will bring participants to the Floriade Expo to visit the International Horticultural Exhibition, gain inspiration and toast the winners.
