FROM ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO ACTION The Dutch Cabinet acknowledges the existence of institutional racism. Recently, that headline was all over the media. Having been part of Dutch society for more than forty years now, it felt to me like a mind-blowing admission. Still, the mere act of saying it on the record does nothing for the victims of institutional racism. To me personally, born on an island of many cultures, it was only natural that cultural diversity was celebrated at school, at the music academy, at football and tennis clubs. My secondary school was like one great daily United Nations assembly. Today, I witness the same thing in Amsterdam and, to an extent, in The Netherlands other big cities as well. In my last column, I wrote about the interim evaluation I got back in 1982 as a drama academy student in Maastricht. “Due to your black skin colour, Dutch companies will not accept you into their ranks. You would do better to return to the Caribbean.” I realized I was experiencing exclusion. Nowadays, this kind of exclusion is more relevant than ever. The negative evaluation I received as a student falls under the same kind of labelling applied to victims of the Dutch childcare benefits scandal. Only, the nature of these negative assessments is more painful and the tenor harsher than ever. This is an insupportable situation. It’s bad not only for vulnerable groups, but also for employers, our government and for a society premised on democratic values and fundamental rights. Many organizations have good intentions for promoting workforce inclusivity. But good intentions alone won’t cut it. One widespread problem is, that whilst organizations hold out the prospect of equal opportunities for job applicants and employees, their internal

systems don’t accommodate diversity. Systems need to be radically overhauled to create more room to value differences. If we want to stride into a new era, we have to pursue diversity now. In Zuidas, it may feel as if diversity and inclusion skipped our part of the city. In every other neighbourhood, the diversity of the population is real and tangible. The challenge for our district now is to build diversity into our business culture, in keeping with the SER Diversity Charter. According to widely respected professors Ghorashi and Schaeffer, there are exciting times in store. Amsterdam’s new municipal executives have earmarked funds for diversity and inclusion in their Coalition Agreement for 2022-2026. That’s commendable, but the Zuidas district says it’s working on this, too. It would be so much better if these parties combined forces. Another positive point is that VU Amsterdam hosted a hugely successful celebration of Black Achievement Month in 2021, with an event showcasing a wealth of young talent. That’s a hopeful sign. As a black man living in one of Europe’s most amazing cities, I am also hopeful that 2022 will see us close the gap on workplace diversity and inclusion. Acknowledging that institutional racism exists is just the beginning. Now let’s get it right by achieving the opposite – starting right here in Zuidas!

Hello People

HELLO PEOPLE

GOT A MINUTE? Are diversity and inclusivity getting the attention they deserve in Zuidas, and how

are local companies doing on this front? We asked people on the street to find out. Here, five workers and visitors in Zuidas share their thoughts with us.

Miranda Brugman (55) “In my opinion there is not enough diversity and inclusion in Zuidas. Looking at the social classes here, there is a striking lack of diversity and inclusion. Zuidas is a place with a high concentration of professionals, so I think an ideal scenario where not everyone’s in suits would be unrealistic, as that’s reflective of professionals in Holland. I’m rooting for efforts bringing in a wider variety of businesses, , not only on the high end scale, but also more common shops, like maybe a nice greengrocer.Something for everyone. As a self-employed career coach, a lot of my work is about helping everyone to be involved and feel good.”

16

Hello People

Dominique Schilling (41) “When you see all the men in suits walking around in Zuidas and compare that to how few women work at companies here, you could safely state that Zuidas has a ways to go on diversity and inclusivity. I work in a male-dominated organization myself, where the difference between men and women in the workplace is noticeable. If I could set an objective, I would like to see more women and fewer men in suits. It’s a long-winded process, but I’m hopeful we’ll gradually shift towards stronger diversity and inclusivity.”

Odede Lion (48) and Yaoendé Perets (53) “We’ve been working in Zuidas for 15 years. Diversity and inclusivity have definitely grown during that time, which we are very happy about. To me, diversity and inclusivity in Zuidas are about what the location offers, such as places to go for lunch. There are a ton of food shops of different nationalities, like a Mexican salsa shop and a kebab place. There’s more variation and that’s the spice of life. At our office we also have people of various different nationalities, and that only makes work life more interesting.”

Nazha (58) “I absolutely think there is enough diversity and inclusivity in Zuidas. I feel totally at homet here. Obviously, there are lots of smartly dressed people, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. You should look smart and professional on the job. It’s only logical! I don’t make any distinctions between people, whatever they’re wearing or whatever they look like.. There’s plenty of diversity and inclusivity where I work and we really value it.”

Zuidas Home Tour

ZUIDAS HOME TOUR

“Living and working in Zuidas is my ideal combination” Zuidas is a distinctive part of the city and in high demand among house hunters. Between now and 2040, some 8,000 to 9,000 new homes will be built here. Once known mostly as an office location, more recently Zuidas has been shedding that image in a complete metamorphosis. When Zuidas is finished in around 2040, a projected 15,000 people will call it home. In this section, we ask residents to tell us where they live and how they like life in Zuidas. This time, we talked to businesswoman Bianca Smits, owner of Blush Beauty & Skin Clinic. Based in Zuidas for 16 years, her professional clinic offers a range of services and is specialized in improving and optimizing skin condition. Recently, Bianca moved into a new apartment in the mixed-used Valley building. She tells us all about her brand-new apartment, her work and living in the area.

Liveability vital for sustainability Then came the final presentation to a four-judge panel. Like true professionals, the pupils set out the whys and wherefores of low-traffic communities, water-retraining green strips (acronymed ‘WADI’ in Dutch), rooftop gardens and the use of circular construction materials. Most impressive to Zuidas chief designer Paco Bunnik, however, was that they had clearly also put careful thought into local quality of life. Art, a jazz café and public school squares were all conceived to contribute to community building. Which – the youthful urban planners stressed – is a vital part of any sustainable neighbourhood. After all, liveability is part of sustainability, too.

ZUIDAS SUSTAINABILITY AWARD Floriade Expo, Almere 17 May 2022

Green Business Club Zuidas, Amsterdam Zuidas and the Hello Zuidas Foundation recently joined forces to present the first-ever Zuidas Sustainability Award. On a sunny May afternoon, all of the nominees and invitees boarded electric buses to the Floriade Expo – a flower show held every ten years – for the short ride to the festive event in Almere. As with earlier Sustainability Reports, the award seeks to showcase the myriad projects that are actively helping to make Zuidas more sustainable and inspire new initiatives. With the Floriade Expo in full bloom, it was the ideal spot for the award celebration. Very fitting, the theme of this year’s show just happens to be ‘Growing Green Cities’! A panel of discerning judges consisting of Prof. Jacqueline Cramer, Margreet van Gastel, Yvette Watson, Chahat Gawdi and Ruth Jansen carefully reviewed all of the

David Cristobal Litago’s arrangement of Antonin Dvorak’s 9th Symphony for eight saxophones brings a whole different sound to this iconic work, whipping up a supercharged maelstrom of nostalgia and hope on stage. I’m convinced there are multiple factors at play. First off, that organizations are thinking carefully about who to appoint and are creating more opportunities for women to advance. ‘Seeing is believing’ is also instrumental. With more women as visible role models, others will be

Lotte Lobé Founder of Topsales Amsterdam “Focus on the power of your personality and capabilities. Male or female, that’s what it all boils down to in the end. If you feel powerful, it shows, whether you’re conscious of it or not. We still have a way to go, but if there’s anything at all that you can change or be an inspiration in within your field, organization or team, that will absolutely help! What works best for me is showing that things can be done differently. No need to waste too much time talking about it. Claim your position and do not apologize for it.”

that, cultivating goodwill is also an important part of it; if you go out of your way for other people then they’ll do the same for you. I swear by that and so I always make time to help someone else if they ask me.”

Katja van Kranenburg Partner at CMS “In the current market there are lots of employment opportunities for those wanting to take a career step. Take charge of your own career. If you want to get higher up, or if you have some other ambition, put together a business plan – use the Business Model Canvas to get started – and work out each step. Then, find a critical (and optimistic) thinker who can analyse your plan, talk to people who are a step ahead of you, and hone your plan. Taking a career step often also requires making new choices on the home front. Talk it through, delegate tasks and let some things go. There is no ideal work-life balance. Let the laundry pile up and savour the mayhem at home. It’s a work in progress and the re-tuning will come naturally in time. Do not put it off until the time is ‘ripe’, because that won’t ever happen. Take that step, be proud of yourself and motivate others to do the same.” Monique Soe-Agnie Deputy Director for Amsterdam Zuidas “Having female leadership in top jobs is essential, in my view, because it has been proven to create a healthy balance in organizational management and policies. And, apart from the male-female ratio, I see wider diversity in management as being equally important, for the same reason. Keeping the public discussion around this issue going is hugely important, in addition to the laws, rules and quotas. Putting a bigger focus on female role models who are at the top (or on their way there) can also have an empowering effect. For the rest, this topic has to be a fixed item on corporate and institutional agendas.” Tips and tricks “My personal motto for success comes from my favourite writer, Maya Angelou: ‘Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it’. I take this to mean that selfconfidence and grit are essential to get to the top. No woman that I know, or at least very few, would say success came without any effort. The reality is that you have to work hard for it, and sometimes you also suffer. Apart from that, it’s just as important to recognize an opportunity when you see it, and to seize it with both hands. Even if the next career step feels big or beyond your comfort zone, you need to tell yourself ‘I’ve never done it before, so I think I can’, and not ‘I can’t do it because I’ve never done it before’.’’

A space for radical self-care & deep healing Science backed & transformational health and well-being on the Zuidas!

Recently, Renessence opened its doors on the George Gerschwinlaan. Seventeen months ago, the idea for this relaxing space was born out of a deep desire to transform preconceived notions of well-being, enable self-optimization and enhance human potential. With curiosity and an open mind, the founders considered what it meant to live and thrive fully; physically, mentally, and spiritually. This exploration led them to combine ancient wisdom with the progress and innovations of modern science, intertwining past and future to develop a space for radical self-care and deep healing. We caught up with Marjolijn Meijer, both a co-founder of Renessence and owner of the Clubsportive and TrainMore gyms.

Zuidas is best known as Amsterdam’s business district, chock-a-block with skyscrapers and scores of offices. More recently, however, the district has grown into a veritable urban neighbourhood and a great place to live and hang out. Many businesses have also discovered Zuidas, and with their arrival, the district has added a wide range of services and amenities, including shops, schools, fitness centres and places to drink and dine. Powering each of these establishments are entrepreneurs and employees with their own special, personal stories that we’re eager to share with you.

Hello You

HELLO YOU

HAP&TRAP @ ZUIDAS

17 June 2022 The new culinary cycling event of Zuidas was a true spectacle! With a lightning-fast sprint through the Claude Debussylaan and a finish on Mahlerplein, it became immediately clear who really is the fastest company of Zuidas. But it was also an enjoyable afternoon for the non-sprinters: with stalls from local catering and retail, a bar, stage and DJ, it truly was a party for everyone.

Van Lanschot Kempen:

“IT’S ESSENTIAL TO YOUR INCLUSION & Van Lanschot Kempen is a renowned name in the financial world and one of the oldest financial institutions in the Netherlands. Though it has been in business since the 18th century, the company says it’s essential to adapt to change with the times. And that’s reflected in the firm’s growing focus on workplace inclusion and diversity. Ibo Metz, head of HR, talked to us about their approach and ambitions. “Having been in (fin)tech for years, I got used to working in highly international and diverse settings”, Ibo says. “I brought that mindset with me to Van Lanschot Kempen, and in the past few years we’ve been able to put inclusion and diversity firmly on the agenda.” Not only to attract and retain talent, he notes. Client expectations are also evolving, making these factors more important than ever. “Wealth transfers to the next generation, and hence to new clients. Those clients are more diverse, resulting in new profiles that our company needs to be mindful of and cater for.” Allies Apart from client considerations, Ibo is quick to stress that the wellbeing of their own staff is paramount. Being from a minority background himself, Ibo says it’s easier for him to see things from someone else’s perspective and what they have to contend with in the corporate world. And also that he feels a personal mission to build strong ties between diverse communities: “You can take a

“Diversity and inclusion is a key topic in our profession and workplace” As the son of a mixed Dutch-Italian couple, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Country Manager Marco Fossatelli knows just how important it is to be accepted for who you are, both in daily life and in the workplace. Having worked as a scientist, chemist and researcher at various pharmaceutical companies, Marco helped set up Alnylam Netherlands four and a half years ago. The global biopharmaceutical company, which now employs fifty people of twenty different nationalities at its premises in Zuidas, is specialized in developing medications that treat rare diseases by employing a self-developed revolutionary technology, able to stop the production of harmful proteins. We met with Marco at Alnylam’s offices in the Cross Towers to talk about the organization’s history and its take on diversity, equity and inclusion. Impact on patients and families

It’s positive for them as they get satisfaction out of their work, but also for the company as a whole since people contribute more, the quality of their output is better and they might even carry on working longer as well. “THE TIME FOR CHANGE IS NOW” Green Business Club Zuidas’ 10th anniversary bash

After twice being postponed due to Covid restrictions, this year Green Business Club Zuidas finally celebrated its tenth anniversary. For the 130 or so guests from Zuidas who attended the celebration at Ox & Bucks, it proved well worth the wait. The GBC Zuidas team had put together a lovely evening, with time to talk shop, reflect on great projects and share drinks and dance moves. Long time no see For people from Zuidas, it was an evening of reconnecting with familiar faces. Joris Kurk, also part of the GBC Zuidas team, hosted the thematic part of the programme on-stage, which included interviews with current and former board members and captains of sustainability such as Maurits Groen. Discussion touched on the organization’s multifarious impact, rooted in hands-on, practical action, and the rather special fact that GBC Zuidas was the very first club and blueprint for a now 16-strong nationwide network of local Green Business Clubs.

50

Sustainability

Voice of a new generation A conversation with Neele van den Bongardt of VU’s Green Office and Nadieh Wesseling’s pointed column on behalf of GBC Young Professionals brought the voice of the club’s new generation to the event. The Pretvormers struck a festive note greeting guests on arrival, while spoken word artist Benjamin Fro stirringly highlighted the urgency of the sustainability challenge: “the time for change is now”.

GBC team as entertainers There was also plenty of hilarity, with an anniversary Zuidas-themed quiz led by quiz master Diederik Imfeld and first and current GBC Zuidas chairs Annelinde van Dijk-van Eck and Roland de Vlam as team captains. Roland de Vlam was crowned ‘GBC-er of the decade’ and he and Director Eline Kik joined in thanking the many assembled guests for all their efforts and commitment over the past ten years. The party and dancing continued well into the night, powered by the inspired cocktails Nina van den Berg mixed at the bar.

Sustainability hall of shame and fame The evening’s guests applauded the team with a lovely banner reading: “Hats’ off for your ongoing, enthusiastic and concrete actions on sustainability issues in and around Zuidas. You’re making real impact together.” There was also a lot of talk around a box in which party-goers could anonymously drop their stories of sustainability shame. Confessions were revealed at the dance floor, variously drawing supportive cheers and appalled boos. The sustainability hall of shame ran the gamut from “I take public transport to work but also fly at least three times a year”, “I take nightly baths with my baby” and “I drove here by CAR” to “I bought a bikini on Shein”. There still is enough to accomplish, but working together in Zuidas will make that change happen.

Rose, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your career? After growing up in Amsterdam and studying in Wageningen, I started my career twenty years ago in Paris within the insurance industry. MEMO BOARD From suits to tracksuits

On 1 July it was finally time again for the Zuidas Run! Set up to raise money for a good cause, this racing event challenges people to trade their tailored suits for running gear. Participants in the 5K ran a course through Beatrixpark and up De Boelelaan, with an added Amstelpark loop for the 10K runners. Having made it to the finish, everyone gathered for some well-deserved R&R on Gustav Mahlerplein, which was transformed for the occasion into ‘Zuidas Run Square’. A Cooling Down After-Party rounded out the day, where colleagues joined the athletes to celebrate their exertions.

ENGLISHLANGUAGE COURSE FOR UKRAINIANS In an initiative to help Ukrainian refugees, G&S Vastgoed, Taalcentrum-VU and Zuidas Publishers are teaming up to offer a basic skills course in Business English. The course will cover language and professional skills such as composing emails, making phone calls and more, and is designed to help participants hone their communication skills. This initiative will give them the possibility to grow and integrate in the Dutch society.

PROVADA 2022 On 14, 15 and 16 June, the annual Provada trade show returned to RAI Amsterdam. This is the largest property event in the Netherlands, with a programme of virtual and in-person activities revolving around networking, real estate knowledge-sharing and inspiration. Interesting guest speakers at this edition included Marja Appelman, executive director of the Housing Market Directorate within the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. As well as a chance to connect with numerous property sector players at their stands, conventiongoers could attend networking meetups, enjoy a great lunch and stay for drinks.
