It was with a touch of pride that my friends and I crossed the finish line of the Yet Zuidas Run. Once again, they had wangled me into signing up. And I was actually psyched to go after a few sessions with Clubsportive trainer Richey Speelman. To be honest, I don’t like running at all, but I was happy to make an exception for the Yet Zuidas Run. It’s brilliant to see this big event held year after year! There were 3,600 registrants from Zuidas plus a waiting list to nab any unclaimed race packets at the last minute. For run organiser House of Sports, the event was a great success. And afterwards the fun continued with a post-race party on Gershwinplein! I saw that registration is already open for next year. So, who knows.
In this issue we’re aiming a spotlight on two hot topics: Diversity & Inclusion and, for the first time, Tech & AI. We talked to a range of fascinating companies and got great interviews! On the cover is Vebego CEO Ton Goedmakers. Vebego is the D&I trailblazer in Zuidas, if you ask me. In our interview with Ton, he shares what drives the company and what it’s like to head this family business.
Our next issue will be zooming in on Living & Area Development. Got a great idea for our magazine? Please drop us a line!
We wish everyone a beautiful summer!

Grachtenfestival Amsterdam and Hello Zuidas have been working together successfully since 2012. Over that time, our partnership has produced many wonderful performances, from percussion to brass and DJs to string quartets, at special indoor and outdoor locations in Zuidas. On 28 August, the Zuidas Botanical Garden will host the 50th concert, where Koosje and band will play their own neo-soul, folk jazz and bossa-inspired compositions. Other venues to enjoy the festival include the Zuidas Market, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, De Thomas and Loyens & Loeff. I highly recommend coming along to one or more concerts. Hello Zuidas, connecting the city!

Managing director of Hello Zuidas
Age: 44
Hobbies:
My family, running and our family business (my ikigai) Favorite spot in Zuidas: Our office in Tower 10 with a terrace I go to Zuidas with: A good mood and my bike Zuidas tip for readers: Step out of your bubble and have a real chat with the cleaner, receptionist, or handyman at the office!
As CEO of Vebego, Ton Goedmakers heads a family business that started out in 1943 as a window cleaning company, founded by his grandfather. Since then, Vebego has grown into a facility services market leader, specialised in cleaning, care services and grounds maintenance, and one of the largest employers in the Netherlands. As the third generation heading the company, Ton is adamant about providing meaningful employment, particularly for people who are at a disadvantage in the labour market. He developed an interest in diversity and inclusion early on, while working side jobs as a cleaner. Ton underlines the value of an inclusive working environment, one in which people from different backgrounds can work and grow together. Vebego’s office in the newest tower of WTC Amsterdam is strengthening their visibility and involvement in the community.
Ton, can you tell us something about the origins and history of Vebego?
“Vebego has a unique origin story. My grandfather, Tonny Goedmakers, began a window cleaning company in 1943, during the Second World War. He did it out of necessity in order not to have to go work in Germany. The company grew rapidly after the war, with DSM and Philips being our first big clients. Pretty soon, the company was expanding, spreading its wings towards, Switzerland and the Benelux. Our focus shifted to facility services, care services and landscaping. Today, we are the market leader in facility services, even though our name is not widely known.
That’s one objective for the years ahead: that everyone will recognise us.”
Vebego is a family-owned company. At what point did you realise you wanted to take a place in Vebego?
“I kind of fell into it. I always enjoyed working with people from all walks of life and cultures. After some cleaning jobs and work experience, my uncle asked me to join Vebego. I took charge of all our operations in Switzerland and lived there for eight years. I returned to the Netherlands in 2018 and now I’m CEO of the company. What I have always enjoyed most of all, is being able to work with my enthusiastic colleagues.”
You are at the head of the organisation, but to an outsider there seems to be no hierarchical structure. Why do things this way?
“When starting out during the war, my granddad hired a ton of people straightaway so he could build a solid business within a short time-span. That spared him the ordeal of having to go to Germany, and obviously he was very grateful to his employees for that. That gratitude is in our DNA. Having a decent job is very important for people, especially vulnerable people. We do all we can to make it feel right for them and enable them to work in a safe environment. Our clients aren’t paying for me to do my job, but for the services my colleagues provide. It’s important to stay aware of that.”
Why open an office at this location?
“We opened an office in Tower Ten to be closer to our clients and strengthen our presence in Zuidas. As a facility services provider, we want to make the work our people are doing more visible and allow it the spotlight it deserves, both for them and for our clients. Just recently, we signed
a letter of intent with the municipality of Amsterdam to guide fifty people to paid employment every year. Even before signing, we had already successfully placed 26 people. Vebego is very proud of that.”
You would like to share your knowledge about D&I with other organisations in Zuidas. Why is this important to you?
“Diversity and inclusion is rooted deeply into our DNA, because we believe a divided society is not conducive to a better world.
We have eighty years’ experience as one of the largest employers of disadvantaged workers. We see it as our duty to share our knowledge and inspire other companies on the value of inclusiveness. It all begins with awareness, and Vebego is happy to contribute to that.”
Do you see opportunities in Zuidas?
“We see a variety of opportunities around diversity and inclusion that are currently not being fully exploited in Zuidas. Though gender ratios and the mix of nationalities
are improving, the group of disadvantaged workers continues to be a challenge, as does the inclusion of vocational graduates. Getting companies to see the value of this diverse talent pool is essential. Zuidas shouldn’t be only for university-educated professionals. Inclusion is crucial for a thriving society. We need to provide support, not only for those who are doing well, but also for those who need it.”

This was the second walk-in meeting after the presentation of the draft designs in September of last year. Around fifty people came to view the updated designs for DUET. There was also plenty of information about the design of the surrounding public area. The buildings have been designed by Zecc architecten, commissioned by the Eigen Haard housing corporation. Talks with local residents, future occupants and between the City of Amsterdam and the architect have resulted in changes to design of the building and the public space surrounding it.
Modifications to public space design
‘The ground floor will include smallscale group housing for people suffering from dementia, coordinated by the OdenseThuis Founcation (in Dutch)’, says landscape architect Lars den Admirant. ‘This kind of facility needs to be safely separated from the area around it. How to achieve that has proved to be something of a challenge.’ The original idea was to install a boundary in the form of a wall or hedging. But during the talks a different suggestion emerged. ‘The idea is to have a softer transition to the public space. The
outer areas of the building and the public space will merge almost unnoticed into each other because of all the planting, but there is a separation in the form of vertical panelling between the plants. This will provide protection and safety for residents, but will hardly be noticeable from the street side.’
Connection to Zuider Amstelkanaal
The buildings will be tiered in shape, featuring two collective roof terraces pointed towards each other on the sixth floor. On the terraces and façades, there
will be plenty of room for plants and other greenery. Other design features will also help to ensure that the buildings merge with the surrounding public area. The choice of plants to be positioned around the buildings will aim to create a link between what is growing in Fred. Roeskestraat and the plants on the banks of the Zuider Amstelkanaal. Den Admirant: ‘On both sides of the building, there will also be spacious pathways amid the planting, and these will form the physical connection between the street, the green banks of the Zuider Amstelkanaal and the pedestrian bridge leading to the Stadionbuurt. We have opted for minimal street paving.’ Thirteen trees will be removed, partly because of their condition and partly because of the two new residential buildings. ‘We will compensate for the loss of these trees by adding more in the future public space.’
Zecc architecten have also made modifications to the building’s design. For
example, the façade of DUET facing Fred. Roeskestraat and the Zuider Amstelkanaal has been made more transparent, by combining and adding windows. The colour differences between the two buildings are now more nuanced than in the previous design: the same bricks will be used, but there will be different accents featured in the grouting, the window frames and the use of materials in the outdoor spaces.
The Eigen Haard housing corporation is developing the around 180 social rental apartments in DUET between the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the De Fred housing complex. The building on the north side, bordering the Zuider Amstelkanaal, will include ninety homes for the elderly. The adjacent building in Fred. Roeskestraat will feature ninety regular apartments, with one to three bedrooms. As mentioned above, the ground floor will include small-scale group housing for people suffering from
dementia. Both buildings will have several homes for wheelchair users, a communal area and an integrated bicycle’s storage facility. It is also expected that there will be a health centre with a general practice in the building in Fred. Roeskestraat.
The definitive design for the residential buildings will be completed this year and construction is expected to start in 2025. If all goes well, the definitive design for the public space will be ready in the summer of 2025. Both the building and the public space are expected to be completed in 2027.

This is a comment you’ll hear from a certain group of people who want to take the easy way out, dismissing topics to shut down thorny conversations. There’s also a group of people who genuinely don’t know anymore what is and isn’t acceptable to say, and so say nothing at all. ‘Whatever the reasoning, neither is desirable’. To bring about real, systematic change, everyone has to feel free to speak up and make mistakes.
We all know that diversity and inclusion are sensitive topics. This causes some people to be extra cautious, afraid to tread on slippery ground. Take the reaction one woman executive got after a big presentation for a C-level audience: “I say, you looked splendid up there on stage. That lovely bracelet really matches the rest of your outfit.” It’s a compliment many consider harmless. Nice to hear. Right? Not according to this recipient.
The first group of people would say: what’s the world coming to if you can’t even give an innocent compliment anymore? You can’t say anything these days.
If you ask me, the solution is twofold, and both sides have a responsibility. For the person on the receiving end, it would help not to get too defensive. Instead, if someone makes an unwelcome remark, try giving some constructive feedback. In the case of this particular executive, for example, by explaining she would rather hear about the substance of her presentation than her appearance. After all, the latter is why she was on stage.
Lashing out could discourage the other person to the extent that they sidestep any such future discussions. Which is overshooting the mark. Ignorance is not a crime, but an opportunity to learn something new, certainly if a person is actually curious.
The willingness to learn is essential, however. It means asking questions like: “could you explain to me why this is offensive? I want to understand.” Then they might learn that comments about appearance were outside the scope of what this executive was trying to convey and that focusing on her looks could make her feel like she’s not being taken seriously in her work.
Sadly, an inquisitive mindset is exactly what’s seems to be lacking in that first group of people I mentioned –the ones who shut down discussions and play the victim. They ignore problems around diversity and inclusion with the excuse that “everything gets taken the wrong way”. This aspect is more problematic, although insecurity often plays a big role here, too. When confronted with this type of person, instead of responding defensively, it can be helpful to ask the right questions. What assumptions is this person making? And what are they based on? JIt is just possible that, you’ll plant a seed of self-reflection and curiosity in the other person.

Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) is an important theme in the Zuidas district. Not only for the top executives within companies but also for the employees who work here. The more diverse the people around you, the more ideas, perspectives, and influences there are. Members of diverse teams see and experience things in various ways and look at them from different viewpoints. They are more likely to see new and different possibilities and opportunities. We spoke to four people in WTC Amsterdam and asked them if they find the Zuidas inclusive enough.
David Price
Floor manager at Brood Baas
“Zuidas could be more diverse, if you ask me. Previous to my job at Brood Baas I worked at several other companies that were more diverse. Still, we do get lots of nationalities stopping in to grab a sandwich in the World Trade Center during lunchtime. Diversity is very important to me, because it means you encounter all sorts of cultures from different countries.”
Ingeborg Ramos
Receptionist at World Trade Center
“I think it is plenty diverse here, because there are so many expats. WTC tenants and managers are also doing a lot about inclusion. And people with disabilities are encouraged to work in the WTC. I think that’s great, as this group are often overlooked, whereas here the focus is on what they can add to the kind of work that’s on offer for them. I think it’s wonderful to have people from various backgrounds working here because it enables Dutch employees to learn about other cultures as well. For me, more diversity and getting to know different people and cultures raises the bar on my job, and I think it’s brilliant that the WTC is investing a lot into bringing all sorts of people, local businesses and social institutions together.”
Cleaner at World Trade Center
“I think you see plenty of different sorts of people in Zuidas. As a cleaner, I obviously see lots of people in passing. It makes no difference to me where you’re from or what you do. Everyone in the building behaves very kindly towards to me. You get a lot of newcomers here too, and if they don’t speak any Dutch yet, I try to point them in the right direction. That’s part of my job. I think diversity is good for the Netherlands because it exposes people to other languages and teaches them to tbecome aware of different perspectives. I see newcomers walking around here a lot and my group of colleagues is also very diverse.”
Arda Satici
Business student at University of Amsterdam
“There are lots of different kinds of people working in Zuidas, so I would say Zuidas is very diverse. I also see loads of people from other countries, especially from Germany, Asia and Turkey. Diversity, to me, means having a range of backgrounds and so nationalities. I think diversity is important because it brings different opinions and perspectives to the fore. It can also help companies to be more efficient. There are a ton of international students at the University of Amsterdam. I think working in a diverse environment is good, because you’re dealing with different sorts of insights and it ups your game.”
At this year’s PROVADA in RAI Amsterdam, the editorial team of Hello Zuidas were on hand as always to network and get a taste of the latest real estate sector developments. PROVADA is the biggest real estate trade fair in the country. With more than 200 exhibitors from the sector and representatives from over 70 municipal, provincial and national authorities, the fair offers unparalleled opportunities for public-private partnerships. This year, we asked exhibitors: “To what extent is the theme of this PROVADA – ‘real connections create real value’ – important to you?” We spoke to a variety of real estate leaders.
Ronald Huikeshoven
Managing Director of AM
“This theme is crucial for us as impact developers. Real connections are needed to achieve our three core missions: creating social impact for both new and existing residents, becoming climate-positive by 2035 and promoting wellbeing in our projects so people live longer and healthier lives. At PROVADA we are presenting how we’re doing this through daily impact talks and activities promoting wellbeing, such as workshops with the Dutch Heart Foundation and fitness sessions.”
Onno Dwars Director of Ballast
“Real connections create real value. And even with a good policy and vision, it is still people who make the difference. The administrators, developers and builders are the ones who put policy into practice. Collaboration and character are essential in area and project developments. We are working with government and private partners to solve the housing crisis and realise high-quality, sustainable urban developments.”
Maurice Meijer
Manager Residential Property at Kroonenberg Groep
“As owner and property investor, we are very actively involved in our projects. Because we develop for our own portfolio, we invest personal attention and quality into every detail. We are showing this at the PROVADA with top-quality projects and our focus on sustainable long-term investments.”
Sake Pleiter
Director of Transactions and Consulting at BNP Paribas Real Estate
“Meeting each other in person allows for a deeper connection than conferencing online. Our entire team will be at the PROVADA fair for three days to make those connections and present our comprehensive services, from property services to mobility and financing solutions.”
Charlotte Harmsen Head of Marketing & Business Intelligence at Savills
“This year’s theme of ‘real connections create real value’ fits perfectly with our own motto, which is ‘property starts with people’. PROVADA is the single best opportunity to network and connect in person with fellow professionals. After the fair, my colleagues always return completely re-energised. And, besides new energy, those face-to-face connections also generate valuable business opportunities.”
Paul Riemens CEO of RAI
“RAI wants to connect Amsterdam with the rest of the world, and vice versa. We’re doing this by organising events and making the area more sustainable, creating not only economic, but also social value in terms of housing, mobility and energy. PROVADA offers a perfect opportunity to promote this vision.”
Rick Sturckenboom, Asset manager at a.s.r real estate
“At a.s.r real estate, we invest in real estate with perpetual value, focusing on sustainability and the community. Our projects, like Cube House, incorporate social spaces for local initiatives, fostering connections beyond office users. This approach ensures we create both financial and social value, reflecting our commitment to people and their environment.”

At 26, Julia Verbij is a social media manager and content creator with over 170,000 followers on Instagram, who went from life on a farm to living in Zuidas. After attaining a degree in language and communication, she embraced the digital world. Since moving to Zuidas with her boyfriend in 2023, Julia has been finding plenty of professional inspiration here and loving the vibrant urban lifestyle.
What brought you to Zuidas?
“After moving house in Amsterdam four times in five years, my boyfriend and I decided to settle in Zuidas. He wanted to live here and my work is flexible. So when we found this apartment on Gustav Mahlerlaan in 2023, everything fell into place. The lively vibe and the inspiring people make life here really special. It’s more than just a place to work. Zuidas has a friendly charm that motivates me to go the extra mile.”
A lot of what you post on Instagram is about getting organised. How did you get into that?
“I actually started out posting fashion content, but after a while I realised I was buying new
clothes every week. Apart from it being expensive, it meant my closet was overflowing. That was a shame, because you don’t need new clothes every week. As I have always been crazy about organising and tidying, I decided to share this passion on Instagram. I also love light, beige hues, so that’s something you see reflected in my interior and content.”
Have you had any memorable experiences as a content creator in Zuidas?
“Not yet, but I will definitely remember this interview, as I always read this section of ‘Hello Zuidas’ first. It’s fun to share my experience living on Gustav Mahlerlaan, that makes it extra special.”
What is your favourite spot at home?
“My favourite spot at home has to be my workspace with wall panels. That is where I spend my working days. I have redone this corner loads of times, but now it’s finally just the way I want it. As well as making my place more atmospheric, it’s also where I am most productive.”
What is your favourite spot in Zuidas?
“My favourite is The Breakfast Club. I love going there for brunch and adore their
amazing granola and pancakes. For dinner, my top spot is Ferrilli’s in Valley, where the service is excellent and the atmosphere is always great. Another favourite is the botanic garden. The fact that everything is in easy reach by metro, from Amsterdamse Bos to Schiphol and the city centre, makes this into a fantastic neighbourhood.”
What do you hope the future holds for Zuidas?
“I hope that Zuidas becomes greener. And it would be nice to have a bakery in the neighbourhood, so we could have fresh bread within walking distance.”
Do you want to stay in Zuidas for good?
“I would still love to live abroad for a while – some place nice and warm. The flexibility of my work means I can work anywhere, so who knows what the future holds.”
Are there any downsides to living in Zuidas?
‘The parking situation can be a challenge which means friends and family don’t visit as much as they might, which is unfortunate. I also miss having a nice grassy field to walk my dog when he is staying at our place.’
In the last episode of ‘Nature as a partner’ we explored the various dimensions of corporate collaboration with Amsterdamse Bos, emphasising the financing of nature, biodiversity conservation, and nature education initiatives. In this second episode we focus on technology in forestry, and innovative financial instruments.
Amsterdamse Bos stands as one of the largest city forests globally, spanning over 1,000 hectares. This urban oasis embodies the commitment to placing nature at the very core of societal and personal life. Amsterdamse Bos isn’t merely a green space; it is a living testament to the city’s dedication to intertwining the urban fabric with the natural world.
This is not a romantic worldview. The latest innovations in forestry mark a significant shift towards intertwining technology and nature. Some examples:
In an era where corporate social responsibility is at the forefront of business strategies, the integration of nature as a partner has gained prominence. A city forest like Amsterdamse Bos with its rich biodiversity and potential for climate adaptation offers a unique opportunity for corporate organisations to forge partnerships that not only benefit the environment, but also contribute to research, education, sustainable development and corporate image.
In 2024 Amsterdamse Bos joined the ARISE project. Research Institute Naturalis, in collaboration with the universities of Amsterdam and Twente, and the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, is building an infrastructure that knows and recognizes all (multicellular) Dutch species. Every species, every sample, every way, quickly - and with all data connected. This is an enourmously ambitious project, making Arise one of the biggest and most important projects in the 200+ year history of Naturalis.
Amsterdamse Bos is currently exploring the intersection between AI and biodiversity knowledge and conservation. We examine how AI is transforming the field of biodiversity.
In December 2022, governments agreed on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), aiming to stop and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. The framework consists of four goals for 2050 and 23 action targets for 2030. These actions involve
protecting 30% of the planet, restoring 30% of degraded areas, reducing the loss of high biodiversity areas, and stopping the extinction of known threatened species caused by humans.
AI can help achieve these targets, as monitoring biodiversity comes with its challenges, in all steps: observation, estimation, detection, and attribution. In recent years, AI has been applied to each of these processes in various ways. In the observation step for example, machine-learning algorithms are used to analyze large datasets of biodiversity observations, such as those from satellites, sensors, and cameras.
AI-based methods can help to identify changes in the distribution, abundance, and traits of species over space and time. Overall, AI and machine-learning have great potential to enhance our understanding of biodiversity and our ability to monitor and protect it. By combining traditional methods and datasets with these new approaches, we may gain insights into complex ecological processes making more informed decisions about conservation and management.
While many are willing to write off technology as the antithesis of nature, Nadina Galle is swimming against this current. She is one of our keynote speakers during our symposium about the future of Amsterdamse Bos in september, later this year.
Nadina is on a mission to uncover discrete technologies as groundbreaking tools to proactively manage greenery, increase access to the outdoors, and connect children and their families with nature. Since 2017, she has met hundreds of innovators developing
and deploying technologies to create nature-rich communities around the world. She traced a founding generation of these “technoecologists”, changing how we relate to the ecology that sustains us. She calls her quest: Internet of Nature (IoN) – a holistic concept for using technology that is restorative of nature, rather than exploitative.
Another example of the innovative practises in Amsterdamse Bos is the pilot for the production of biochar. Used for centuries in indigenous farming practices in the Amazon basin, biochar, also known as terra preta, is a type of charcoal that is created by heating organic materials, such as wood or agricultural waste, in the absence of oxygen. This process, known as pyrolysis, breaks down the organic material into a stable form of carbon that can be used for a variety of purposes.
Biochar has the potential to sequester carbon in the soil for hundreds or even thousands of years, helping to mitigate climate change. By sequestering carbon in the soil, improving soil quality, and providing a sustainable waste management solution, biochar can help fight climate change, increase agricultural productivity, and protect natural resources. Biochar has the potential of addressing many of the environmental and agricultural challenges we face today.
Biochar has gained recognition for a potential carbon offset solution. At the same time, the creation of the carbon market came forth as a tool for managing, controlling, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, combining environmental responsibility with financial incentives.
Photography: Tom Zwerver
The practical and cost-effective establishment of carbon credit standards is crucial for the integration of biochar into carbon trading systems, thus encouraging investments in the biochar industry, while promoting sustainable carbon dioxide sequestration practices on a global scale.
So in research and pilots the Amsterdam Forest focusses on how biochar effectively generates carbon credits. We are currently discussing the evolving carbon removal marketplace. Furthermore, we address knowledge gaps, areas of concern, and research priorities, regarding biochar implementation in carbon credits, with the aim of enhancing our understanding of its role in climate change mitigation.
Amsterdamse Bos positions biochar as a versatile and scalable technology with the potential to contribute significantly to carbon credits, aligning with sustainable development goals. It calls for continued research, transparency, and public private partnerships to explore the full potential of biochar in climate change mitigation efforts. If you would like to contribute to these developments, please contact us.
Partner with Amsterdamse Bos to protect urban nature for current and future generations. We rely on corporate partners to increase the health and resilience of this outstanding natural area, so close to the business district of Amsterdam. We connect people with nature, and strengthen the environmental workforce with the help of volunteers. From event sponsorship to grantmaking and employee engagement, we have a variety of ways for your company to make a lasting impact.
Direct Financial Support: One of the most straightforward ways for corporations to partner with city forests is through direct financial contributions. These long term funds can be earmarked in foundations for specific projects or goals, like biodiversity initiatives, reforestation projects, and the maintenance of ecological balance within the forest. Establishing a dedicated fund ensures a long-term commitment to the well-being of the city forest.
Project Partnerships: Corporations may take their support a step further by sponsoring specific areas, activities or scientific projects within the city forest, or securing naming rights for trails, groves, or educational facilities. This not only provides financial support, but also creates a visible association between the business and the conservation efforts, enhancing brand visibility.
Employee Volunteer Programs: In addition to monetary contributions, partners of Amsterdamse Bos can encourage employee engagement by setting up volunteer programs within the city forest. This not only contributes to the physical wellbeing of the forest, but also fosters a sense of environmental stewardship among employees. Corporate volunteer programs can also involve activities connected to the expertise of a partner, like media, research, or financial innovation, but it can also involve outdoor activities such as tree planting, habitat restoration, and educational outreach.
In a groundbreaking move, Amsterdamse Bos is in the proces of developing premium carbon credits, a novel financial instrument to raise capital for the city forest. This innovative approach invites expertise from the financial world, encouraging corporate partners and impact investors to explore investment opportunities that align financial goals with ecological sustainability, reinforcing the notion that nature is not just a partner, but a viable investment for a resilient and sustainable future.
Amsterdamse Bos welcomes your team in the middle of nature. You can go here for relaxing walks, active team bonding experiences and special activities that stimulate creativity.

In today’s workplace, there’s a beautiful mix of ages. Some people are still building their careers, while others are preparing to pass the baton to a new generation. Helen van Empel, director of Yet, notes that this results in a dynamic melting pot of experience, knowledge, and perspectives, where employees of various ages collaborate and learn from each other.
“Older generations bring valuable experience and wisdom, while younger generations contribute innovative thinking, and a deep understanding of modern technology,” Helen notes. This generational collaboration creates an engaging work environment, where everyone experiences different life stages and challenges. Helen emphasizes the importance of acknowledging these stages and understanding their impact on mental wellbeing: “It’s crucial to recognize and understand how these phases can influence your mental health.”
Awareness of this workplace diversity is essential, according to Helen.
“It’s important to acknowledge that empathizing with others can be challenging, precisely because everyone is
so different and has a unique perspective. Realism is key; striving for complete empathy is an unattainable ideal. That’s why it would be wise to occasionally bring in an external expert with specific expertise.” Leaders and colleagues play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive and positive work environment where every voice is heard and every contribution is valued, regardless of age or experience.
Helen stresses, “A company culture that encourages openness about mental wellbeing is invaluable.”
“Sometimes the environment alone isn’t enough to help you overcome obstacles that prevent you from reaching your full potential,” Helen asserts. “Therefore, it’s crucial to have easy access to external help to strengthen your mental wellbeing.” “Remember: it’s not helpful to strive
to all be the same,” Helen advises. “Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, regardless of their life stage or background. Trying to conform can lead to mediocrity and disengagement. By recognizing that everyone is different, generic training and advice often fall short. Rising stress levels are a warning sign. When you pay attention to this, you can find a tailored solution for both the individual and the organisation in this specific situation.”
In this way, stress can become a helpful force. “Don’t wait, take control. A conversation with an expert can make a world of difference. You’ll be surprised at what one focused hour can achieve.” Helen concludes, “At Yet, we strongly believe in the power of change through action. Everyone hits a roadblock sometimes, and it’s okay to need help. With Yet, there is always an expert available to look at the issue you’re currently facing. Completely confidential, personal, and practical, so you can move forward, no matter what stage you’re in.”
Yet is an online platform offering experts in mental well-being, personal development, and situations at work and home—all in one place. You can book an online session with the expert of your choice anonymously and without waiting times. Yet is accessible, so you can get help in time and prevent a situation from becoming overwhelming. Yet uses a unique approach. The experts at Yet—such as psychologists, leadership coaches, and career coaches—work with the proven Single Session Therapy (SST) method. Simply put, Yet provides you with insight for the next step toward growth and development through one clarifying, goaloriented session.
By fostering an environment that supports mental well-being and encouraging proactive conversations, Yet aims to help individuals navigate their professional and personal challenges effectively, promoting a healthier, more resilient workforce.

Regus, Spaces, The Office Operators and Signature: International Workplace Group is the global leader in hybrid work solutions and workplace brands. We create personal, financial and strategic value for companies of all sizes. From the world’s most energizing companies and well-known organizations, to independent professionals and the next generation of leaders. All leverage the power of International Workplace Group’s hybrid work platform to increase their productivity, efficiency, agility and market proximity. Their high-end Signature brand, which includes Strawinskyhuis on Amaliaplein, is well known for luxury and a high standard of service. We caught up with Zuidas and Amsterdam-Zuidoost City Manager Eline van der Horst and Senior Area Sales Manager Lucas Floors, both of whom work for all IWG brands, as well as Country Manager Luc van Opbergen, who joined later. According to Luc, “We currently have 111 locations in the Netherlands, and IWG Netherlands’ vision is to double this number in the coming years”.
Unique level of service at Strawinskyhuis
Strawinskyhuis, a building that once housed part of the Amsterdam District Court, has been transformed into a new state-of-the-art office building over the past year. In January, law firm DLA Piper moved into one section of the building and office supplier IWG’s high-end brand Signature moved into the other. “Our local staff regularly visit tenants here to make sure everything is up to scratch”, says Luc. “The standard of service is very
high in that respect and everything is kept nice and tidy.” Eline: “Expectations are high and we have to meet them. We therefore had a rigorous selection process for staff. We started recruiting internally five to six months beforehand, first offering advancement opportunities to existing staff.” Luc adds, “What differentiates Signature is a truer form of hospitality, with more of an emphasis on community and being together. We put a lot of time and energy into creating the perfect setting”.
Advantages of Signature in Zuidas Signature’s interior designers have given the premises a unique style and there are a variety of facilities available. Eline explains, “One absolute must-have was a room for standup meetings, where teams can gather for short standing sessions. This is one of the unique selling points of this location.”
Lucas: “Employee wellbeing is key. The large windows, good air quality and abundant use of wood creates a tranquil atmosphere. This building promotes a healthy mental working environment.”
In addition to office space, Signature in Zuidas also has a Club Lounge and meeting rooms that companies can use. Eline: “They’re available to everyone, even if you don’t lease an office here. Simply use our app to check in at any IWG location worldwide. This is a feature our clients really appreciate.”
“According to Luc van Opbergen, country manager for IWG Netherlands, IWG and Signature have ambitious plans for the future. We are taking an important step in Amsterdam with the opening of the new Signature office location in the Strawinsky House. Our strategic location, connecting Southax and Old-South, responds to the growing demand for professional workplaces close to where people live. We remain committed to further expanding the number of workplaces in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands this year.”
IWG and Signature have ambitious plans for the future. “Our vision is to increase the density of our locations in the Netherlands with our four brands: Spaces, Signature, Regus and The Office Operators. Signature is our high-end brand that offers iconic buildings like Strawinsky in Amsterdam, Holbeinhuis in Rotterdam and a Signature in Centre Utrecht. Spaces is about a community spirit, whilst Regus represents the business office concept for all. We currently have 111 locations and 150,000 m² of office space, but want to double this and expand in all regions of The Netherlands. Our focus is on a wider distribution of locations.” Luc says there
are plenty of prospects in Zuidas. “We see opportunities everywhere. The flexible office market is still growing. People want to work close to home and no longer spend hours in gridlock. This is what we can offer and is an area in which we aim to grow.”
“Building ties with people can be difficult sometimes because there are so many options out there. But at IWG you can start out as a receptionist and work your way up. We want to invite people to come work a trial day
here and experience our wonderful workplace and clients for yourself. Just sign up at the reception desk or online at www.regus.nl and you can test drive our Business Club for a day free of charge. If you like what you see, we’ll invite you to work a trial day and match you with the product we think would suit you best.”

The O|2 Lab Building, located on the buzzing campus of VU Amsterdam at de Boelelaan 1108, is living up to its reputation as a world-class medical science laboratory. Home to over 850 researchers and Master’s students from both VU Amsterdam and the Amsterdam UMC, the impressive facility is one of the first to bring scientists together, to collaborate on important human health and life sciences issues.
Inside the state-of-the-art building are a variety of specialised laboratories, including biochemical labs, synthesis labs, a radionuclides lab and an ML-3 lab. The building has been designed with a focus on sustainability and functionality. A striking architectural feature is the cut-out section that allows daylight into the building’s core, thus reducing the need for artificial lighting. The steel ‘mikado’ columns enhance the open and transparent feel of the interior.
Built for flexibility and efficiency, the laboratory facilities are cooled by water from the nearby Nieuwe Meer and powered
by the VU/Amsterdam UMC energy centre. The green sedum roof helps to insulate the building while also absorbing water.
In addition to its impressive sustainability credentials, the O|2 Lab Building also houses space for gatherings and interaction. On the ground floor is the Science Café, where staff and visitors can break for breakfast, lunch and coffee, as well as space for informal meetings and presentations.

Roan Lamp has been with De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek for more than twenty years and is now a partner in the firm. As a specialist in financial crime, he mainly assists companies in national and international enforcement cases.
Roan emphasises the value of diversity and inclusion within organisations and is actively involved in making De Brauw and Zuidas more accessible to diverse talent.
As a partner in the firm’s regulatory and criminal enforcement department, Lamp says, “I mainly deal with financial and corporate criminal law. We primarily advise companies, both domestically and internationally”. Lamp started his career in Curaçao and has built up a wealth of experience at De Brauw. “De Brauw is a firm where lawyers gain experience in a broad array of matters early on in their professional lives. This is of great value. You are able to play a much bigger role in cases because of this.”
Diversity and inclusion are key topics at De Brauw. Lamp: “Our teams perform better when they are able to draw upon many diverse perspectives. Ideally, our firm reflects society at large, which means working on both gender and cultural diversity. Although our team of lawyers is split 50/50, at the beginning of this year only 27% of our partners are women. This has increased from 13% in 2018, and we
are committed to further growing this percentage. Retaining and promoting talent within the partner group is essential in this respect, as well as for improving diversity in the broadest sense. Talent from all backgrounds should feel they can belong and succeed at our firm. We have programmes and initiatives that are helping with that, such as our inclusion committee, which contributes to a diverse working environment.”
According to Lamp, diversity and inclusion need to be promoted more throughout Zuidas: “We need to listen and better understand why diverse talent perceives us as too remote. We have a responsibility to close that gap and make everyone feel welcome, regardless of background. Making diversity visible and enabling everyone interested in a career in Zuidas is crucial.”
Lamp regularly works from Shanghai: “If you don’t live abroad or travel abroad often, the international dynamics are hard
to understand. We are a Dutch firm, but operate from multiple specific locations including Shanghai, Singapore, Brussels and London. The experience in Asia is very different from that in Europe.
Next to his job as a lawyer, Lamp is also a professor at VU Amsterdam. He enjoys being among students. “There are lots of different views on diversity, equity and inclusion amongst students, some more polarising than others, but all truly engaging. I really like the passion and energy of students. I am optimistic about the diversity of students and of opinions at the VU.”
What Lamp particularly wants to emphasise is that all professionals working in Zuidas work at truly great companies. It is a cliché, but with privilege comes responsibility. “Let’s actively work to break down barriers and create an open environment for everyone.”
“Greenberg
has an incredible number of talented and interesting people to learn from.”
Ambitious, enthusiastic and bursting with energy, Sabine Schoute joined Greenberg Traurig five years ago as a partner in their finance and restructuring practice. What appealed most to her were the firm’s entrepreneurial spirit and international presence.
Five years ago, Sabine got a WhatsApp message from the firms’ management team in Amsterdam, asking her to drop by for coffee and a chat. “They told me they were looking for an experienced lawyer to set up their Amsterdam finance and restructuring practice. The entrepreneurial aspect of the proposal really appealed to me.” But there were some challenges. “I started my new adventure at Greenberg Traurig five weeks before the pandemic started. And then I discovered that I was pregnant with my third child. Nevertheless, Sabine managed to build a successful practice. “At our firm, it is definitely possible to combine your personal life with a successful career and a relentless focus on clients and results.”
Sabine says that most of the time there is a good balance between her busy job and her personal life. “It obviously varies and sometimes the balance tips more towards family, other times towards work or commuting. You need to be flexible, or you’ll always be playing catchup. Being a lawyer at our level is never a 9 to 5 job and it shouldn’t be. And at the same time the job offers a tremendous flexibility.”
The most important thing, she explains,
is to really enjoy your work and that it never feels like a chore. “I am lucky that my husband is very supportive. I couldn’t do what I’m doing without him.” Sabine has built a strategic and efficient team, enabling her to focus on her own talents. “I bring people with different qualities and expertise together and optimize the synergy of their skills in order to best serve our clients.”
For young professionals who are just starting their careers, Sabine says it pays off to do an internship first to see what energises you. “It’s hard to judge if the legal profession suits you if you haven’t gotten a taste of what it actually entails”, she explains. Sabine also underlines the importance of building a network early on in your career. “Talk to as many people as you can and keep your eyes open. The network you build can be very valuable later on. Once in the job, it is vital to have one or more role models, Sabine says. “As a result of our size and international presence, Greenberg Traurig has an incredible number of talented and interesting people to learn from. In general, it is valuable at every stage in your career to benefit from the experience and skills of others. A great example of our own
network full of role models is our recent Legal Ladies’ Lunch with international colleagues. It was wonderful to see what a diverse and large group of talented women the firm has.”
Code-V
Greenberg Traurig was founded in Miami in the 1960s by people who were experiencing prejudice on the job market. “Diversity and inclusion have been in Greenberg Traurig’s DNA from day one. Harnessing talent in the broadest sense is essential and the firm is marked by a strong entrepreneurial culture. In addition, we have a reputation for offering an open and safe work environment. Our firm is regularly praised for its continuous commitment towards successfully fostering diversity and inclusion in leadership positions and throughout the workplace.” Greenberg Traurig Amsterdam participates in Code-V, in which Sabine is personally involved. “It’s a powerful initiative in which over 80 parties from the government, financial industry and advocacy sector – have joined forces to promote equal opportunities for women in entrepreneurship. It truly shows the effect of commitment and collaboration when addressing an important economic and social issue. We’re proud to be part of it.”

Last year was the first-ever edition of Inclusivity, an event featuring a variety of speakers presenting their insights into what inclusivity entails and how to promote it in your workplace and wider environment. Thanks to the resounding success, a second edition is now in the works for September! Here, the organisers and partners open up about why this topic matters to them.
Tessa Meesters (left)
HR Diversity & Inclusivity project team,
Nationale Postcode Loterij & VriendenLoterij
“Inclusivity 24 chimes well with our core values and vision for an inclusive and diverse workplace culture. By taking part, we want to demonstrate that we are serious about creating a working environment where everyone feels safe and valued. And, of course, we hope the event will contribute to making Zuidas more inclusive. For our part, we’re interested in what we can learn from other organisations. Sharing best practices can really help ours to become even more inclusive. The Postcode Loterij itself will be presenting our Diverse Talent programme, set up to encourage our departments to welcome diverse people on board. I’m hoping for a high turnout and looking forward to exchanging experiences and being inspired. This topic also means a lot to me personally, as I myself got the opportunity to join and develop at the Postcode Loterij after a long period of illness.”

Diversity & Inclusion project manager, Hello Zuidas
“Vebego kicked off last year with Inclusivity 23. It was a inspiring event that we attended as well, and straightaway we were keen to talk about potentially partnering for this edition. As a community builder and communication partner, Hello Zuidas works to reach all of Zuidas. We feel it’s important for Zuidas to be an inclusive area where everyone feels at home.”
Sophie-Anne Onland (right)
‘Inclusivity 24’ moderator
“I’m participating in Inclusivity 24, because I believe inclusivity is powerful and necessary in all aspects of our society. Representation plays a crucial role. It is essential that everyone can see themselves represented in all different areas of life, whether it’s in the media, the workplace, in politics or education. When people see themselves represented, they feel more accepted and valued, and that boosts their self-confidence and self-esteem. I have experienced this for myself and want to share it at this event.”
“My main motto is ‘There is no such thing as disadvantaged workers, they are gogetters!’ The reason this matters so much to me is that it means that everyone can play a contributing role in society. Companies are the ones now with a disadvantage to the labour market. I know there are loads of opportunities and I only need to show them the possibilities and present examples. The important thing is that we all start thinking in terms of opportunities instead of limitations. I am proud to say that Vebego employs more than 5,000 people in the Netherlands who were once labelled as ‘disadvantaged’.”

On Thursday, June 6th, during International Pride Month, the Pride Cinema Zuidas event was held at Rialto VU. The film ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ was the main feature and attracted many enthusiastic visitors. Drinks and snacks were provided, and after the film, there was a friendly gathering at Bar Boele. The event was free and open to everyone, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere and a successful celebration of diversity and togetherness.
VU Amsterdam is celebrating a notable achievement: no fewer than six of its lecturers have been awarded prestigious Comenius Fellow grants. Awarded by the Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO), the grants enable Fellows to pursue their education innovation projects and put their teaching visions into practice. Associate Professor Yvette Taminiau has received a Comenius Senior Fellow grant in the amount of €100,000. She will be teaming up with Janneke Waelen, director of the VU Centre of Teaching & Learning, to launch Professional Companion, a project pairing talented VU students from multicultural backgrounds with mentors in Zuidas. The next step? Finding fifty Zuidas mentors for these students. Yvette: “We want this project to help make Zuidas even more vibrant. We’ve got the talent!”
Connecting students with companies
VU students from multicultural backgrounds have a harder time making connections in the Zuidas business community. Yvette and Janneke want to change this and are pulling out all the stops to get these connection made. “After winning a teaching award, I talked to Janneke about tapping my network in Zuidas for our students”, Yvette explains. “I have been at VU for twenty years and done a lot of work with Deloitte, PWC, KPMG and EY. These firms are happy with the matches we’ve made with master students from the department of organization sciences. In the second year the master students of the law faculty will also be able to join the program. It would be brilliant if we could add some nice companies in Zuidas to our roster.”
The key to successful mentorship
“An important aspect of being a mentor
is providing a safe basis. You have to challenge a student to think further and bigger, but at the same time show a caring side. It’s all about taking a sincere interest in and paying attention to them as a person”, Janneke says. “Advising is also important, for example by recommending courses that helped you. And there is an element of learning from one another. The mentor can learn from the student about their life and what would make them feel at home in an organisation.”
Yvette: “We learn a great deal from our role models by hearing about how they built their careers, whatever their role in an organisation. These mentorships consist of three meetings with a student and one day of shadowing. It feels very doable to us. In addition, VU wants to organise an annual student-mentor reunion day: an event featuring inspiring speakers and giving mentors and students an added opportunity to meet and network.”
Nitesh Krishnadath, VU graduate, now employed at EY:
“Having a mentor can be a huge help when making professional and personal life choices and a mentorship is valuable for both the student and the mentor. Let’s connect our talented students with experienced professionals and grow together. Attracting students from other cultural backgrounds continues to pose a topic for firms in Zuidas. EY is a very diverse firm, fortunately, and the standard image of the Big Four also tends to be wrong. They employ many internationals and Dutch students from immigrant backgrounds. But there’s still a leaky pipeline. People are coming in, but it’s equally important to provide them with the right opportunities once they are in. At EY, there is a strong emphasis on providing these opportunities.”
Mentoring for all
For now, this initiative is open only to students from other cultural backgrounds. Yvette: “Many companies are working on cultural diversity, but we also need practical initiatives like this project. It offers students a chance to discover Zuidas, network and learn from experienced professionals. Students from immigrant backgrounds in particular often don’t have role models they know who work in Zuidas. This project gives them a buddy and entry into this world.” VU Amsterdam De Boelelaan 1105 1081 HV Amsterdam www.vu.nl +31 (0) 20 598 98 98

This year, RAI Amsterdam, VU Amsterdam and Vebego are sponsoring the 2024 Zuidas Sustainability Award. The organisers (Hello Zuidas, Green Business Club Zuidas and Amsterdam Zuidas district office) couldn’t be more delighted! All three sponsors were Zuidas Sustainability Award winners last year, in the following categories: Society & Economy (Vebego), Mobility & Logistics (VU Amsterdam) and Public Choice (RAI Amsterdam). Here, we introduce you to these organisations and their sustainability projects.
All three parties start off by talking about their winning Sustainability projects from last year: Rientz Mulder (RAI Amsterdam): “We won the award for our local and plant-based event catering. This project, called ‘Heartwarming Amsterdam’ (Hartverwarmend Amsterdam), aims to reduce the carbon
footprint of our events by offering more plant-based menu options. We work with local suppliers and source seasonal and organic ingredients from them to make flavourful and sustainable dishes. The project has successfully reduced CO2 emissions and food waste and also increased awareness and acceptance of
plant-based food among our visitors.”
Roy Ploum (Vebego): “Zuidas still has a long way to go when it comes to inclusion, and we are applying our corporate philosophy to help change that. Vebego offers meaningful roles for everyone – for our ‘go-getters’, as we call them. We want to share our knowledge and experience with all of our of our companies in Zuidas and to offer our people a chance to find work in and beyond Zuidas, in cooperation with partners like the municipality of Amsterdam. What if we were to think in terms of job market prospects instead of limitations? To focus on what people can
do instead of what they cannot?”
Rooske Gaal, Diederik Leusink and Insa Duvos (VU): “VU won with our ‘VU Green Travel Grant’ last year, which gives students an incentive to travel by train to their exchange destinations”, says Insa Duvos of the VU International Office. “Last year, students who travelled by train received up to 185 euros, depending partly on the destination. For the upcoming academic year, we have increased the amount to 212 euros. We hope this will help convince still more students to travel sustainably.”
What does sustainability mean to your organisation?
Rientz Mulder: “Sustainability is an important core value within our organisation. We are striving to balance economic growth, environmental protection and social responsibility. This translates into practical measures such as minimising waste and using energy more efficiently. We are always looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact and make a positive contribution to our community.”
Roy Ploum: “From the very beginning, almost eighty years ago, our motto has been ‘Great Work’. Vebego offers work with meaning. We are proud to help our 40,000 people build independent, meaningful lives and make positive contributions to
society. This applies especially to our more than 6,500 people who are disadvantaged in terms of background or employment. Sustainability is genuinely part of our company’s DNA.”
“Sustainability is one of our priorities”, says Rooske Gaal, head of Sustainability at VU. “Our research, education and operations are all working towards a fair and liveable world and sustainable solutions to the challenges of our time. Among our current objectives is to make the whole campus natural gas-free.”
Diederik Leusink, director of Campus Development, explains: “We are investing in heat and cold storage to sustainably heat and cool buildings. Cold air is stored underground in winter to be used for cooling in summer, and the other way round for heating. In addition, we use 100% green electricity, have a ‘Zero Waste VU’ programme to eliminate waste, have green-blue roofs, worm and bee hotels and much more.”
How do you see the Zuidas Sustainability Award?
Rientz Mulder: “The Zuidas Sustainability Award is important because it recognises organisations that are working towards a more sustainable future. It is a platform that showcases inspiring initiatives and motivates others to take similar steps. We see the award as a valuable incentive for
companies to be creative and steadfast in their sustainability efforts.”
Roy Ploum: “On the one hand, the Sustainability Award is about recognising what companies are doing on the sustainability front. On the other, it’s raising awareness among all companies operating in Zuidas about how and in what ways people can contribute to a better and brighter world.”
“We applaud any effort to make Zuidas more sustainable”, says Diederik. Rooske adds : “Exchanging knowledge is vital to that and is also stimulated by this award.”
RAI, Vebego and VU Amsterdam are sponsors of the Zuidas Sustainability Awards this year. Why is supporting this award important to you?
Rientz Mulder: “As a winner of the award, we feel a responsibility to continue promoting sustainability. By becoming a sponsor, we want to encourage other organisations to develop and implement their own sustainable initiatives.”
Roy Ploum: “We believe that this award has real impact. That’s why it’s important to keep organising this event and challenging even more companies to pursue sustainability in whatever way they can.”
Diederik Leusink: “For VU, it is one way to highlight sustainability and the great initiatives that are contributing to achieving goals both at VU and elsewhere.”

No matter the industry or role you are in, determining your position on AI is crucial in today’s business world, according to AI experts from nlmtd. Don Fontijn, Maxime Lubbers and Koen de Brauw help organisations navigate the AI revolution. But where do you start? What is relevant to your business? What do you need to know, and how do you do this responsibly? Schiphol Airport, Nationale-Nederlanden, SVn, and Techleap, with Dutch Prince Constantijn as special envoy already started with nlmtd, based in EDGE Olympic on Fred. Roeskestraat.
Why having an opinion on AI matters
According to Don “We should compare AI with electricity, not the Metaverse. This is not going to blow over and knowing how to leverage its capabilities is critically important. 67% of all jobs are expected to be augmented by AI and we see this as a massive opportunity for all companies.” Koen: “Companies that embrace AI will perform better than its peers who will not. We guide companies on that expedition to figure out how to do it and what to watch out for. From thinking about AI to acting on it.”
Responsible AI?
AI could pump an additional €85 billion into the Dutch economy over the next ten years. And although we are all aware of the huge economic opportunity, we also make sure to align the ambition with the social, legal and sustainability context. Maxime: “In order to act responsible it’s key to understand the technology to a certain extent,
be aware of the risks and change the mindset into an expedition mindset. Don: “Helping people from customer support to the boardroom with this will pave the way for a successful AI expedition.”
AI support for Zuidas
“AI isn’t just about tech; it affects your entire business model” says Koen. We are big believers in doing, so we sit down together with clients, connect their challenges to the capabilities of AI and design solutions. Next, we test those in small experiments and strategize for the long-term impact and value. Do you want to know how AI impacts your business model? “Mahler Capital’s mission is to raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of investing in crypto”
Exactly one year ago, crypto experts Viennie Ramlal, Renske de Bruine and Joël Happé launched Mahler Capital: a cryptocurrency investment fund dedicated to generating superior returns for its investors through an actively managed crypto portfolio. The three first met via investment trade shows and have been building their fund ever since. Now that everything is up and fully running, they are looking to get the word out. Here, they share more about their own backgrounds and the vision driving Mahler Capital.
Origins of Mahler Capital
Back as a communication student, Joël had been doing a lot of work with technology: “I read something about bitcoin and efforts to create a digital currency without an intermediary getting in between”, Joël recalls. “Eventually, this personal interest grew into a serious activity.” At an investment trade show in 2015, Joël got acquainted with Viennie, whose stepfather was one the biggest crypto miners at the time. The two met Renske at another trade show in 2022. “With my background in digital entrepreneurship, crypto caught my interest straightaway”, Renske says. “Joël and Viennie told me they were making returns of +21 per cent, even in a falling market. After investing in their strategy,
this convinced me to partner with them.”
In September 2023, the trio officially launched as Mahler Capital, with the aim to build a solid foundation and a bright future for the crypto market.
Building awareness and trust in crypto Mahler Capital has a clear mission: to raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of investing in crypto. “We believe crypto can be an excellent investment for everyone”, Joël explains. Their unique strategy has enabled them to generate good returns even through difficult market conditions. “Both private and corporate clients can invest with us starting from 100,000 euros.” While so far most clients have come through their network, Mahler Capital is looking to raise its profile, Renske
says. “On 11 July we are hosting an inperson event to inform people and give them a chance to get to know us personally.”
With its AFM-registered fund, Mahler Capital offers clients trust and accessibility. “We have been independently rated as one of the best crypto companies”, Viennie notes. At the moment, there is a growing push within the crypto market towards regulation. “There are two sides to regulation”, Viennie sums up. “Though it undermines the original vision behind crypto, MiCA regulation will provide for a more mature and safer market.”
On 16 May, a group of Hello Zuidas members joined us for a lovely evening on Amsterdam’s canals. We enjoyed a leisurely late afternoon cruise on two luxury ‘salon’ boats operated by Flagship Amsterdam, with delicious snacks and refreshing drinks along the way. Back on dry land, we all headed over to De Japanner for their grand opening party, where our members were welcomed like VIPs and treated to delightful drinks and nibbles. It was the perfect kickoff for our summer programme!
Radiate who you are on the inside. Leanne Wong, KNMG Cosmetic Doctor and owner of Cosmopolitan Clinic Amsterdam, can help you do just that. While the online world is constantly bombarding us with offers for fillers and injectables, personal real-world advice is often lacking. Based in Zuidas, Leanne Wong’s Cosmopolitan Clinic wants to enable everyone to make a fully-informed and well-considered choice. Not only about whether a treatment is needed, but which clinic and doctor is the best match.
Leanne Wong studied medicine and thereafter gained two years’ experience in general surgery and four years in plastic surgery. She subsequently completed a two-year specialisation in cosmetic medicine, and now focuses all of her experience on providing non-invasive aesthetic treatments, particularly facial treatments. Leanne Wong is one of only 166 specialised cosmetic doctors granted a protected KNMG title in the Netherlands.
Cosmopolitan Clinic stands for quality and protects the health of its clients. Leanne regularly sees both young and older adults who opted for extreme treatments, such as large amounts of lip fillers, Botox and tear trough fillers for eye puffiness, but came to regret it later. If not
done properly, such treatments can cause permanent damage, she emphasises. “It is of crucial importance that consumers are well informed and make the right choices about cosmetic treatments. Unfortunately, it’s often the clinics which make the biggest noise and offer the biggest discounts that win.” Leanne wants more education for consumers so they know which clinics work with certified medical specialists who prioritise health and quality, rather than selling as many treatments as possible.
“There are simple treatments I can do in the clinic that make a tremendous difference”, says Leanne. “There’s often no need for invasive treatments to get the result clients are after. For example,
treating frown lines with botulinum toxin lets me give people a fresh, youthful look in 15 minutes. And fillers around the mouth/marionette area can give a much softer facial appearance, with an average recovery time of just a few hours.”
In the Netherlands, all doctors who perform cosmetic procedures are allowed to call themselves cosmetic doctors. Cosmetic doctors with the letters KNMG (Royal Dutch Medical Association) after their name have completed the official specialisation in cosmetic medicine and are registered as specialists.

“By going for ‘green kilometres’ and embracing flexibility, we’re not only creating a more sustainable workplace but also strengthening our community.”
Astrid Hendriks, HR Services & Specialties manager and Jeske van Spreuwel-Verhoeven, Facility Management manager, are both involved in developing mobility policy at Van Lanschot Kempen. Jeske focuses on the facilities end and accessibility of the firm’s office locations, while Astrid is responsible for employment conditions. At its most recent meeting, on 4 July, ‘Taskforce Bereikbaarheid Zuidas’ discussed mobility and parking. Guest speaker Van Lanschot Kempen presented their employee mobility policy and how it operates in practice.
After harmonising and modernising their employment conditions in 2020, Van Lanschot Kempen set to work on its mobility policy. The coronavirus pandemic highlighted the importance of hybrid working, so this was fully integrated. Van Lanschot Kempen wanted to take a sustainable approach and worked closely with its sustainability team. This resulted in a mobility policy that is not only sustainable ,but also flexible, giving employees the freedom to travel and work responsibly and efficiently.
In addition to its headquarters in Tower Nine of the WTC in Amsterdam and its head office in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Van Lanschot Kempen has another twenty-five locations across the Netherlands. Most are in the vicinity of railway stations, encouraging the use of public transport. The firm’s policy is focused on promoting sustainable travel by means of ‘green kilometres’.
“For us, it’s all about employee wellbeing. Ensuring that our offices are easy to reach and working conditions are flexible is key to creating an optimal working environment.”
At Van Lanschot Kempen, mobility policy is always a work in progress. Last May, the firm started offering lease bikes (both electric and traditional). Before this, employees already had
the option to buy bikes with a tax deduction. This new scheme has proved to be popular. The firm has seen a marked increase in the number of bikes stalled and demand for e-bike charging points has also been growing for some time. The Amsterdam WTC has its own large bike parking facility and other offices also offer secure bike parking.
Compared to other organisations, Van Lanschot Kempen has a modest fleet of leased vehicles. The firm has made sustainable agreements for this fleet, under which every new car purchased is fully electric. Lease drivers are offered the flexibility of also being able to take the train to the office or clients instead. Parking is limited at the main office locations, which incentivises sustainable choices. Its electric lease policy, introduced a few years ago, has led to the expansion of charging points in the car parks.
Employees are regularly asked to weigh in, either through the firm’s Employee Engagement Scan (with an eNPS of 19 and a response rate of 84% in 2023), a targeted questionnaire, or membership in its Works Council or sounding board groups. Internal employee surveys show flexibility to be one of the most important elements. This flexibility was therefore built into the firm’s modern employment conditions and later applied to its mobility scheme as well, which combines a wide range of options with a low-threshold approach.
On Thursday, May 30, the official opening of Stepstone took place, organized by Woonstichting Lieven de Key. Stepstone is the first social residential tower for young people on the Zuidas. This project provides more than 200 young people aged 18 to 28 with affordable housing and an opportunity to take their first steps in the housing market. With a strong representation of Hello Zuidas members, the event was marked by a festive housewarming where residents, partners, and guests came together to celebrate this milestone.
Upon arrival, guests were welcomed with an impressive photo exhibition. Portraits of residents provided insight into their experiences and perspectives on living in Zuidas. Tours were organized, giving guests the chance to take a look at the modern, furnished apartments and the rooftop terrace with sports facilities. Guests could participate in a fitness challenge on the sports roof, guided by a personal trainer from the nearby gym TrainMore. Residents proudly opened their doors and gave personal tours of their homes. One of the highlights was a beautiful maisonette on the 22nd floor, with a stunning view over Amsterdam.
Following the tours, the official opening ceremony was conducted by Bart Vink, district chairman of Stadsdeel Zuid, Karin Verdooren, director-general of Lieven de Key, and the community builders of Stepstone. In their speeches, they emphasized the importance of affordable housing for young people in the dynamic environment of the Zuidas. After the speeches, all attendees raised their glasses together to festively celebrate this milestone.
While enjoying snacks and drinks, residents and guests engaged in conversations. Live music was provided by singer-songwriter
Rose Marin, adding to the pleasant atmosphere. A silent disco was also held in the communal work and study space. Guests had the opportunity to capture the housewarming event by using the photo booth, which was equipped with various accessories for fun photos.
The official opening of Stepstone marks an important step in the development of affordable housing for young people in Amsterdam. The event was a great success and a promising start for the residents of Stepstone. The realization of this 80-meter high residential tower is the starting point for an eventual total of approximately 2,500 homes in the Knowledge Quarter.
Banks aim to be there for everyone, ensuring that customers can use all products and services as naturally as possible. The Dutch Banking Association (NVB) regrets that research commissioned by the Ministry of Finance reveals that customers do not always experience this. Earlier this year, banks already announced various improvement actions to eliminate experiences of discrimination. They will continue these efforts with customers and other stakeholders and will intensify these actions further. The presented research provides important points of reference for this purpose.
Medy van der Laan, chairman of the NVB: “We stand for a broadly accessible range of services and products that take into account the differences between all people, regardless of their background. That this is not always experienced as such, we take very seriously, and we are doing everything we can to improve it.” A concrete example of this is the collaboration with the independent national reporting center Discriminatie.nl, which the NVB recently announced.
Banks recognise the findings of the research commissioned by the Ministry of Finance, partly from recent conversations with (representatives of) customers and entrepreneurs with an Islamic and/or nonWestern background. The research makes clear that other groups also experience discrimination. Banks regularly contact many social organisations representing these groups. Banks will discuss possible solutions with these organisations to address and prevent discrimination.
Source: nvb.nl
Simultaneously with the Ministry of Finance, the Dutch Central Bank (DNB) conducted research, also published today. This research concerns the measures banks take to combat discrimination in compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and CounterTerrorist Financing Act (Wwft). The NVB will thoroughly study this research and incorporate DNB’s recommendations into the development of current and future actions.
Previously, banks announced their increased commitment to excluding discrimination following their own research into discrimination within the context of legal customer research. Through the mentioned conversations with customers, entrepreneurs, and organisations, banks have gained further insight into experiences of discrimination in bank contacts. Additionally, collaboration with Discriminatie.nl helps lower barriers for customers to report perceived
discrimination. Banks aim to learn from such reports to take quicker action.
Moreover, banks have intensified and broadened their activities to prevent discrimination. They have started sharing knowledge and experiences internally to make any (unconscious) biases discussable and address them themselves. The NVB is also exploring possibilities to supplement existing Sector Standards in the implementation of Wwft, so that as many entrepreneurs and not-for-profit organisations as possible can be included. Further initiatives that have been picked up or will be launched are:
• Investigating possibilities to incorporate cultural differences in payment behaviour and payment transactions into KYC processes.
• Further implementing inclusive and accessible language in KYC processes.
• Internal research into unintentional and indirect discrimination in processes.
• Qualitative research into causes and methods in account blockades.
• Further development of existing activities and tools to keep employees aware of potential biases and customer experiences.
The European financial markets feature numerous financial products with characteristics such as ‘green’, ‘ESG’, ‘sustainable’, ‘climate’, ‘transition’, ‘impact’ or similar. But when is it fair to name or label financial products as such? In this article we provide a brief update on relevant EU financial markets law and the position of EU financial regulators, as well as point out implications for the financial markets in relation to loans, bonds, investment products, insurance, benchmarks and other financial products.
Greenwashing in the financial markets generally On 4 June 2024, the EU authorities for the banking and insurance sectors along with the securities markets EBA, EIOPA and ESMA considered the concept of ‘greenwashing’ in the financial markets against a background of concerns that financial products, such as loans, bonds, investments and insurance, were all too easily promoted as ‘ESG’ or ‘sustainable’. In their respective final reports, the ESAs published their common high-level understanding of “greenwashing” as a practice whereby sustainability-related statements, declarations, actions, or communications do not clearly and fairly reflect the underlying sustainability profile of an entity, a financial product, or financial services. The European authorities stress that financial market players have a responsibility to provide sustainability information that is fair, clear, and not misleading.
For fund managers and financial advisers, the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) sets out requirements for disclosure of information and investment objectives to investors, regarding the promotion of financial products with environmental or social characteristics (Article 8 - Products) or with sustainable investment as their objective (Article 9 - Products).
For example, according to the SFDR, a sustainable investment is an “investment that contributes to an environmental or social objective, as measured by key indicators or a reference benchmark; does not significantly harm any of the environmental or social objectives; ensures that the investee companies follow good governance practices, such as respect for human rights, anti-corruption and antibribery measures, and sound management structures.” For further information on this subject.
In addition to disclosure requirements applying to the activities and performance of such Article 8 or Article 9 funds, asset managers of regulated investment funds under UCITS and alternative investment funds under AIFMD must also be careful with the naming of such funds. On 14 May 2024, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published Guidelines on funds’ names using ESG or sustainabilityrelated terms.
ESMA distinguishes 3 levels of recommendations for funds names: I. all funds with names that include terms related to green, social, governance, transition, impact, ESG, SRI and other environmental, impact, sustainabilityrelated terms:
a. should invest at least 80% in investments that meet environmental or social characteristics or sustainable investment objectives as set out under SFDR; and
b. should apply the CTB exclusion criteria under BMR; II. funds with names that include environmental, impact or sustainability-related terms should apply also the PAB exclusion criteria under BMR; and III. funds with names that include sustainability-related terms should commit to invest meaningfully in “sustainable investments” as defined under SFDR.
The guidelines published by the ESMA will be translated into the official EU languages and published on the ESMA website. After the publication, national competent authorities must notify ESMA within two months whether or not they comply with the Guidelines.
For climate benchmarks, the EU Benchmark Regulation (BMR) sets
out the basis on which benchmark administrators may classify benchmarks, such as indices, as Climate Transition Benchmarks (CTBs) or EU Paris-Aligned Benchmarks (PABs). Essentially, BMR prescribes both (A) exclusion criteria for CTBs (exclusion of controversial weapons, tobacco, and violators of UNGC principles and OECD MNE Guidelines) and additional exclusion criteria for PABs (additional exclusion of companies involved in certain hard coal, lignite, oil & gas and GHG intense emission) and (B) disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions of the underlying assets and the relevant methodology.
Effective December 2024, bonds issued in the EU may be designated and labelled as ‘EU green bonds’ if they meet the requirements of the EU Green Bond Regulation (GBR), which also includes provisions relating to ‘sustainability linked’ bonds. For more information on the GBR.

In view of the recent and expected developments on greenwashing for financial products, and taking into account upcoming review of UCITS and AIFMD, financial market participants should consider whether to update product disclosure, marketing materials, pre- and post-contractual information, prospectuses and other disclosures in relation to any ESG and sustainability related products, as well as to update internal processes, training and monitoring of client preferences in this area.

Zuidas is best known as Amsterdam’s business district, chock-a-block with skyscrapers and scores of offices. More recently, however, the district has grown into a veritable urban neighbourhood and a great place to live and hang out. Many businesses have also discovered Zuidas, and with their arrival, the district has added a wide range of services and amenities, including shops, schools, fitness centres and places to drink and dine. Powering each of these establishments are entrepreneurs and employees with their own special, personal stories that we’re eager to share with you.
"Everyone thinks it's wonderful work to be doing and I'm glad that I get to do it.'
Two years ago, Gerwin Appelman started working at the Salvation Army, where he combines his love of cooking with his passion for helping people. From the kitchen at the Holiday Inn in Zuidas he cooks meals every day for Ukrainian refugees. Where previously he worked in the hectic world of airline catering, now he has a daily ninety-minute cycle to work and back and a routine he enjoys.
Gerwin joined the Salvation Army after a surprisingly laid-back job interview: “It felt more like a coffee break. Next thing I knew, I was hired. Gerwin and his team prepare between 1,000 and 1,500 meals daily for the organisation’s range of locations. ‘The meals are meant for residents of the various Salvation Army homes’, Gerwin explains.
‘We also work with participants, offering daytime activities they can do with us. We train people as cooks and they get a basic certificate. Every morning, we run through the day, discuss which participants will be coming in and what needs to be cooked for each site.’
‘We do a whole variety of meals, from Dutch home cooking to Asian dishes.’ The reactions are almost invariably enthusiastic, Gerwin says. ‘Every day here is a treat for me and the feedback means a lot.’ One of the biggest challenges Gerwin has faced so far, is the upcoming relocation in September. ‘We’ll have to leave this site and relocate to a smaller production kitchen near Westerpark.’ Also important for Gerwin is checking in with participants to see how
they are doing. ‘Just recently, I helped out a participant who was afraid to take the metro. She hadn’t been in for several days, so I rang her up and offered to take the metro to work together. After the second time, her fear was gone.’
Gerwin feels his work is having a strong positive impact. The wintertime shelter for homeless people, where they can always get a hot meal, is one initiative that is close to his heart and a source of satisfaction.
‘Everyone thinks it’s wonderful work to be doing and I’m glad that I get to do it.’
Being based in Zuidas means Gerwin is also indirectly making connections in this highpowered area. ‘We also prepare lunches and are looking to expand that, which will make a positive contribution to the community.’
