MARIEN GLERUM • BENELUX MANAGING OFFICER DENTONS

‘Whatever else happens, accessibility and diversity are hot topics in Zuidas’ Marien Glerum, Benelux Managing Officer Dentons

In 2017 the law firm BOEKEL merged with Dentons to continue under the name Dentons Boekel. Dentons was already the largest law firm in the world and BOEKEL experienced an immediate click with the transnational heavyweight. Judging from the numbers, the internationalization of BOEKEL’s more traditional office proved a good move, pushing turnover up by more than half in 2018. We sat down with Marien Glerum, who has been working at the firm’s centrally located premises on Gustav Mahlerplein almost nine years and was recently appointed Dentons Boekel’s Benelux Managing Officer. He told us what it’s like to be responsible for day-to-day management of a hundred lawyers when you don’t have a law degree. You have been working at Dentons Boekel for nine years all

This will enable AFC to gear up for the future and realize its ambitions. We are grateful to all those who have worked so many years to achieve this.’

DNB: BANKS CAN REJECT CLIENTS ON GROUNDS OF LEGAL TAX AVOIDANCE Zuidas - De Nederlandsche Bank (the Dutch central bank – DNB) wants commercial banks to keep an eye out for clients who may be avoiding taxes. In its newly published recommendations for banks on how to handle client tax risks, DNB has determined that legal avoidance may be grounds to refuse clients. Banks are not happy with this decision, with tax experts accusing DNB of unjustly conflating permitted tax planning with illegal tax evasion. In consultations, banks had stressed that tax avoidance should not be classed among these risks, as avoidance is legal. The regulator has decided differently.

EMPLOYER QUANDARY: DISMISS STAFF BEFORE OR AFTER 1 JANUARY? Zuidas - The date on which the Dutch Balanced Labour Market Act (WAB) will take effect is fast approaching. Employers and employees are well advised to take the new law into account, according to the advice of Pascal Besselink, labour law expert at legal service provider DAS. Although costs may not be the decisive factor in dismissals, it may constitute a big financial difference whether staff are given the boot before of after January 1. In principle, the transitional compensation or redundancy payment an employer is required to provide upon terminating an employment contract will go down substantially. This goes particularly for employees aged fifty or older who have been on the payroll for more than ten years. As from 1 January, everyone is entitled to at most one-third of a month’s salary for each year of their employment. At the moment, the rate is one-sixth of a month’s salary for every half-year of employment in the first ten years, plus a quarter month’s salary for every additional half-year – or a half month’s salary for employees aged over fifty. These amounts may accumulate rapidly.

NS ORDERS NEW TRAINS FOR BRUSSELS SERVICE Zuidas - The Dutch Railways (NS) has placed an order for 18 new trains for its intercity service between Schiphol Airport and Brussels. They are ready to put into commission within six years, reported the Dutch NOS broadcasting foundation. The contract for €200M has been awarded to French manufacturer Alstom. The trains can be operated in both the Netherlands and Belgium and will provide more than eight thousand additional seats for the high-speed service to Belgium.

PUBLIC SPACE

GOT A MINUTE?

On Friday 28 June it was time once more for the Zuidas Culinary Summerfest, which was on Zuidplein by Hello Zuidas and WTCafé de Blauwe Engel. It was a sun-drenched evening and visitors packed the square to sample the culinary creations on offer at food stands catered by a line-up of local restaurateurs: Baresco Amsterdam, Che Buono, Crowne Plaza, De Nieuwe Poort, Het Amsterdamse Proeflokaal, Holiday Inn, Loetje, Novotel, Ox & Bucks, Sushitime, Symphony’s, Wagamama, We Canteen and Wineboutique. Completing the summer vibe was live music by Joel Borelli, Jill Helena, Quincy, DJ Theo and DJ Mar’one. We polled four visitors about the event.

ALBERT GAST Owner of Think+DO ‘I got an invite from Hello Zuidas and I think it’s a great initiative. The ambiance is super and I know a bunch of people here. Just before this we had a sustainability meeting. Afterwards we all came down to have a drink here. I’ll go score a salad somewhere later, but right now I’m thirsty for a good beer!’

SASJA ALBERSEN PropertyNL ‘The Zuidas Culinary Summerfest is a great festival which grows bigger every year. It’s definitely an event that draws locals together. I had another reason for coming this year, which is Jurgen’s farewell. He was the manager at Ox & Bucks, among other things, but has taken a job in Suriname. Zuidas will really miss him!’

FINAL DECISION ON ZUIDASDOK DELAYED TILL 2020 Zuidas - Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen has informed the Dutch House of Representatives that she plans to take a final decision regarding the design and realization of Zuidasdok in the first quarter of 2020. First, she wants a detailed study on the ramifications of various problems that have surfaced. Project contractors Heijmans, Fluor and Hochtief, united in the ZuidPlus consortium, have had to suspend preparatory work. With construction initially set to start in 2020 and finish in 2028, there are now fears of a major delay. The project was awarded to the ZuidPlus consortium in January 2017 for a contract sum of €990 million.

AFC MAKES ROOM FOR NEW RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD Zuidas - The Amsterdam Football Club (AFC) is relocating within Zuidas. With a shift to the north, the club will add five new artificial turf pitches and a new clubhouse, designed by Paul de Ruiter. It is widely hoped that the signing of the contracts will put an end to a years-long, protracted discussion about the country’s most expensive sports club. The land on which the club is established within the Goed Genoeg sports park belongs to the municipality (only the clubhouse belongs to AFC) and has an estimated value in the range of €800 million to €1 billion. The new pitches will still occupy the priciest slice of Holland after the move – and slated completion of Zuidasdok – but its current location, comprising the area between De Boelelaan, the A10 ring road and Beethovenstraat, will be freed up for the construction of 1,500 homes and a school.

SOMALIA MOGADISHU WHY? This beach was off limits for years during the reign of extremists. Finally, the local population got it back, so they can enjoy the sea and all sorts of games. Every Thursday and Friday, their serious, weekend soccer matches are being played. WHAT? In the background, ruins remnants of the civil war. A guard with an AK- 47 makes sure peace is kept. Several months after I took this picture, the beach was attacked again. But the next day the beach was busier than ever as a statement to Al-Shabaab.
