“Y el título es plural, por que pocas cosas he visto más plurales que ese país. 17.000 Islas, innumerables religiones, tradiciones, mentalidades, gentes , animales, playas y un sin fin de culturas y ritos hacen de Indonesia el país de nunca acabar.
“And the title comes from the meaning of the word. I haven´t seen nothing more uncommon that Indonesia. Is not just 17.000 islands. Is all the countless religions, traditions, minds, peoples, animals, beaches and mix of cultures what really make Indonesia like the never-ending country.
Ir saltando de isla en isla con la gente local, vivir como viven ellos y recorrer el país solo me hace sentir como cuando era joven y tenía un mapamundi al lado de mi cama. Un forajido, un intrépido sin final ni frontera que solo espera ver para seguir, sin parar en el creer.
Jump among the islands with/and like the locals, live with them and go over through the country just make me feel like i was a kid facing the world map next to my bed. I really felt like an outlaw, an intrepid without frontiers and is just waiting to see how everything goes and want to keep on the way not thinking, not relaying. Just going.

Éste proyecto nace de la obsesión por los gemelos idénticos. María Zarazúa explica “siempre me ha parecido fascinante la idea de que exista otra persona que pueda ser, en apariencia, un doble exacto a nosotros mismos. Por eso planteo esta serie como un juego confrontado de armonía y disonancia intentando que cada espectador finalice la narrativa de las imágenes.” Con este proyecto propone una reflexión sobre lo que ella llama “los límites de la identidad entre las personas que tienen entre sí un conocimiento íntimo”.
This project stems from the obsession with identical twins. María Zarazua explains, “I’ve always found fascinating the idea that there is another person who may be, apparently, an exact double of ourselves. So that is the reason of why I put this series like a game of harmony and dissonance faced trying to make every viewer finishes the narrative of the images.” With this project she proposes a reflection on what she calls “the limits of identity among people who have an intimate knowledge of each other.”
Es interesante como emplea el concepto de identidad para referirse tanto a la condición de igualdad entre ambos y a la voluntad de diferenciarse e identificar rasgos que caracterizan la personalidad propia. Este conflicto, no evidenciado en la escena, genera una situación inquietante en el espectador.
It’s interesting how she uses the concept of identity to refer to the condition of equality between both and the will to differentiate and identify features that characterize the personality. This conflict, not shown in the scene, creates a disturbing situation in the viewer.

“Mis fuentes de inspiración son las cosas que nos rodean del día a día, cualquier elemento insignificante tiene algo de inspiración para mí. Aunque en mis ilustraciones me baso mucho en mis sueños donde todo es un caos, una maraña de colores y formas llamativas, las represento con líneas blandas y orgánicas haciendo que llame la atención el conjunto, la composición, pero si nos fijamos y nos adentramos más en la obra descubriremos una infinidad de detalles que son desapercibidos a simple vista. De ésta manera consigo que el público interactúe con la obra, que distinga algunos elementos, e incluso que se mueva entre ellos.”

“My sources of inspiration are the things that surround us everyday, any insignificant element has some inspiration for me. Although I draw in my illustrations a lot of my dreams where everything is a mess, a tangle of bright colors and shapes, I represent them with soft and organic lines catching the public’s eye into the set of elements, the whole composition, but if we look and move more into the work we will discover a myriad of details that are undetected by the naked eye. In this way the public interacts with the work, distinguishing elements, and even moving between them.”

“El trabajo de Santos Román no es simplemente una recopilación de retratos de mascotas. Su obra es un trabajo psicológico completo y reflexivo que utiliza como excusa el mundo animal para conectarnos con actitudes, conductas o experiencias que nos ligan al mundo que vive fuera de nosotros y que en el fondo no es tan distinto al nuestro propio. Es difícil enfrentarse a estas imágenes sin identificarnos con el animal retratado y encontrarnos parecidos y similitudes como si de un ser humano se tratara. La verdad del universo es que nuestro mundo está vinculado inseparablemente al ser humano y moldeado por sus acciones. Y partiendo de esta idea del retrato psicológico, Santos Román, ha conseguido reflejar un mapa de expresiones faciales, miradas profundas y gestos complejos que nos permite vislumbrar la “personalidad” del sujeto adentrándose en una comprensión del mundo animal profunda y apartándose de la fría mirada de la mascota como objeto decorativo de salón. La formación de Santos Román como psicólogo ha sido determinante para la realización de estas fotografías. Tanto si retrata mascotas y animales como cuando se enfrenta a la naturaleza, consigue rasgar la arrugada piel del objeto para llevar al espectador más allá, para llegar a los rincones más íntimos del alma.”
“Roman Santos’s work is not simply a collection of portraits of pets. His work is a thoughtful and psychological work that uses the animal as an excuse to connect with attitudes, behaviors or experiences that bind us to the world that lives outside ourselves and which, at the end, is not so different from our own. It is hard to deal with these images without identifying ourselves with the animal portrayed and find similarities as if they were human. The truth of the universe is that our world is inseparably linked to human and molded by their actions. And from this idea of the psychological portrait, Santos Roman, has managed to reflect a map of facial expressions, depth look and complex gestures that offers a glimpse of “personality” of the subject plunging into a deep understanding of the animal world and seting aside from the pet’s cold eye as a living room’s decorative object. The Santos Roman training as a psychologist has been instrumental in the realization of these photographs. Whether portraying animals and pets or when confronted with the nature, he manages to rip the wrinkled skin of the object to take the viewer beyond to reach the inmost recesses of the soul.” Text: Teresa Collazo Lugo
