KARIYUSHI

Master-plan Futenma

To solve the high-density residential district of the surrounding of the Futenma Base and prefecture-wide traffic issues, I envisaged a future city (KARIYUSHI) where a new air traffic terminal is based. The site is located in Okinawa where U.S. military is based since the end of the war and is hugely linked to the local industries.

Hence, the principal proposition of the project is to give Futenma new functions and roles assuming the Futenma Base is returned to Okinawa. Put simply, this design seeks to make the maximum use of a returned large green area and airspace over the site. KARIYUSHI means "celebration" and "cooperation" in Okinawa dialect.

Traffic Network

Heavy Traffic Area

In Okinawa, orbital transportation network has not developed well because of limited flat areas. It cause an excessive car-oriented society and bad traffic conditions. Here, I proposed a new air traffic system (hydrogen-and-electric-powered airship named Sky Whale) to connect between islands. In this plan, Futenma will be positioned as a new medical, sightseeing and logistics hub.

High Line View

The Sky Whale Terminal is located in the center of the city, which is situated 45 meters above ground. Ring-shaped decks conecting to the Terminal (named Sky Deck) spread across the city at the same level of the terminal. The decks are designed to connect not just areas in the city but also the surrounding areas of the city.

Its building construction has arches and catenary frames that transfer load toward cores. This makes it possible to achieve a long span of 75m-100m, producing 92% of green area. All the electricity in the city is generated by Vertical Axis Wind Generator on the Sky Deck.
