A new concert hall in Kyoto was to be designed as a reconstruction of an existing hall. The site is located in Kita-ku, northern area of the city, on a site which presently is a hall only for classical music and citizens have limited use of the hall. The theme of this project is to promote the use of the hall not just during performance days but also in the weekdays as a community center.

The new hall is composed of 5 main programs - music hall, theater, studio, service functions and restaurants. The building is buried 3 floors under ground due to landscape regulations. Visitors go down the exterior stairs to the lobby and access to the music hall and theater. Integrating service functions to one side makes it possible to perform services such as carry in/out efficiently.
Foyer View
Features of a concert hall such as sound reflector, sloping tiers of seats and rehearsal room are apparent to the exterior parts which can be used as community lounges on weekdays. For example, the outdoor stairs is used for guiding as many as 1,200 audiences on a performance day, and for outdoor amphitheater on weekdays.
