Kyoto has set out to be an environment-friendly society since the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. In Kita-ku, Kyoto, this new library is to be designed as a model in an environmental society. The library would also have a new attractive functions in addition to the so-called "accumulation of information".
I used Kitayama-cedar, a local breed of ceder, as the column which includes steel stock passing through the center. The wood serves not just the structure but also as a fire-resistant film for the steel. The attachment bracket at the top of the column serves as a joint between column and beam, which is adjustable depending on the pitch of the roof.

The horizontal louvers make it possible to block out direct daylight in summer, and conversely, allow daylight into the room maximally in winter. The chimney effect in the open ceiling space allows indoor air to be ventilated. These basic ideas create the characteristic architectural form.

The grand stair connects all functions such as reading, reference, multi-purpose, office and research. It promotes exchanges of various visitors. The sub entrance on the opposite side of the lawn space permits access to multi-purpose rooms when the library is closed.
