The last 5 years working with you has been an honour, and I feel privileged to have been a part of a service you have invited into your lives to help make life a little easier where possible. I wish you and your families the very best moving forward and the fondest of farewells.

Come and join in the fun at SenseCere’s family workshop for Parents/Grandparents/ Carers and the child you look after with additional needs. Siblings can also come if other arrangements cannot be made.

After identifying a need for a Sensory workshop from your feedback and SenseCere’s family workshops coming highly recommended from a Carer registered with us, they have developed a bespoke one day family workshop for Carers in Eastleigh by compressing 3 shorter separate workshops into a day of fun and interaction.

Looking through the eyes of your children you will explore what you and they may be experiencing in a sometimes overwhelming sensory world, how the senses can affect behaviour and how to manage these and reduce the effects of smell, taste, touch and the environment. You will also have an opportunity to learn how the senses can be used to your advantage in the support of your children.

Meanwhile, the children will be supported to have fun whilst exploring these senses through a variety of activities to match their needs. They will be supported by understanding, experienced and DBS checked staff.

To book your place please call us on 023 8090 2421. Bookings secured on receipt of a “Child Need” form (to provide appropriate support for your child on the day) and a deposit of £10.

N.B. Final numbers are required no later than Friday 8th May 2015 after which any deposits will be non refundable.

Solent Dolphin Boat Trip for Carers and the person you care for!

2pm to 4pm on Wednesday 27th May AND Thursday 2nd July Solent Dolphin is a charity which operates a boat, the M/V Alison MacGregor, for the sole purpose of taking people with disabilities out for trips to sea on Southampton Water.

There will be one member of staff from the Carers Centre as well as five or six crew members on board and the boat caters for people of all ages and disabilities including wheel-chair users, although attendees would be responsible for themselves and their loved one.

The boat trip departs from Hythe Marina and we will supply a map and directions to those who need it.

Carers Week is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign and aims to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for.

Have your say!

As part of Carers Week, which takes place every June, we will be holding Carers focus groups at all of our June groups to capture your evaluation of, and ask for your input on, developing the Carers Centre, review our requests for donations towards services where possible and in identifying any unmet local needs (e.g. Would you like a group closer to your home?)

We would be grateful if you could let us know if you are coming by calling on 023 8090 2404 so we can ensure we have enough biscuits!

In addition to the Carers Centre focus groups in June (see page 4), we will have the following guests at some of our groups in the coming months: 

On Tuesday 12th May, 10am to 12pm at The Wells Place Centre, Wells Place, Eastleigh SO50 5LJ, Quality Solicitors Knight Polson, will be joining us to run a short presentation followed by a general question and answer session. We recently ran one at Blackthorn Carers Group after identifying a need for information on Power of Attorney which went very well.

Please be aware they will not be able to give you personal and tailored legal advice unless you formally instruct them, however they can offer the aforementioned information and outline their services and charges.

Please also be aware we do not recommend any solicitors over others, but have approached Quality Solicitors Knight Polson in Eastleigh to attend on this occasion as One Community have worked with them before and they have offered free legal awareness sessions for Carers.



West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reviewing the future use of Moorgreen hospital site and want to find out what local people want. Come along on either of the following dates to find out more, participate in a short survey and a general chat: Wednesday 10th June, 2pm to 3.30pm at West End Surgery, Moorgreen Rd, West End, Southampton SO30 3PY or Wednesday 17th June, 10am to 12pm at Blackthorn Health Centre, Satchell Lane, Hamble-le-Rice, Southampton SO31 4NQ

Join us to catch up with a Carers Support Worker and meet others in a similar situation over a cuppa!

If you would like to attend our groups, events, outings or workshops but are unable to due to your caring responsibilities, transport issues or any other reason, please contact us to discuss your situation so where possible we can outline options that could help you access support services.

Carers Centre Information & Support Groups All of the groups listed on pages 6 and 7 are drop ins so you can come for as long or as little as you like. Come to whichever groups you like!

As well as providing the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and have a relaxed cuppa with some friendly, familiar and new faces, a member of the Carers Centre Team will be there if you want to talk through anything you are finding challenging and the information and support services that may be available.

Evening Support Group For all Carers!

This group will run exactly the same as all of those running in the day (see the introduction on the top of page six).

We initially piloted this group to reach people caring for someone with a mental health problem, as we found they attended one to one support but not many groups. After consulting with them and to ensure all of you who would like to access support in the evenings can, this is now a group for all Carers, so please come along.

In addition to providing information and support for all, we will continue to stay true to the roots of the group by providing mental health information, details of local support and invite guest speakers/session runners where possible.

Taking place 6.30pm to 8.30pm at One Community, 16 Romsey Road, Eastleigh, Hants, SO50 9AL on the following Wednesdays: 6th May, 3rd June, 1st July, 5th August, 2nd September, 7th October, 4th November and 2nd December

A Group for all Carers and those living with Dementia One Community’s Carer Centre, Eastleigh’s Dementia Advice Service (Andover MIND) and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Hampshire run a monthly get together for:  

All Carers and People living with Dementia and their family and Carers

One Community’s Carers Centre’s Emotional Support Scheme is now APS accredited!!

Do you ever feel that with what ever support or information you have, sometimes what you really want is a weekly chat with a friendly face over cuppa?

You might not feel you need our counselling or one to one support, but instead want someone who you can vent to or talk to about anything other than the stress of everyday life?

Our Emotional Support Scheme is just that!

The scheme matches people looking after someone with a supportive volunteer for weekly visits of up to eight weeks to provide positive emotional support.

This much needed support service was recommended to apply for the three-year Approved Provider Standard (APS) and was successful! APS is the national quality standard designed specifically for all types of mentoring and befriending projects and supports safe and effective practice.

Bobbie Jones Carers Award One Community is delighted to announce a new One Community Award to be presented annually in memory of our One Community Trustee, Bobbie Jones, who passed away last year.

Bobbie championed the cause of carers throughout her many years on the Board of Trustees so, in a fitting tribute, the award will recognise a carer who has gone above and beyond in their caring role.
