There are a number of reasons why we come to be working in the voluntary sector, whether we are volunteers or in paid work.

Some people wish to make a contribution to their local community, some people want to make friends or learn new skills, some people may hope the experience helps them to find paid work; whichever describes your experience we all know that the voluntary sector is a vital part of the community.

One Community on its own cannot stop global warming or poverty or solve all the problems people face; but we can, with your help, make a difference locally.

If you need any advice or help we have many guides in our toolkit as well as being able to answer direct questions, so please ring or email any of the team. We are here to help. Let’s make 2016 a great year.

Not buying more than we need Due to the way big supermarkets promote and offer deals, we can often end up with more than we planned on buying. This is a false economy and research shows we are unlikely to use produce before the best before date and so you are wasting money and food by buying into so called ‘deals’. Make a list before you go to the supermarket which includes quantities and stick to it.

This service operates seven days a week in most of the Borough and is available if you are either attending a medical appointment or visiting friends or relatives in hospital. This service will try to accommodate wheelchair users.

Make sure you keep your receipts then take them, along with your appointment letter and proof that you are receiving one of the qualifying benefits, to the hospital cashier’s office or Patient Advice and Liaison Service to claim your reimbursement.

Can I have patient transport?

The NHS national criteria says that non-emergency patient transport services are intended for patients who have a health condition that prevents them travelling to hospital by any other means. This is usually patients who are in some way immobile (eg wheelchair or stretcher bound) or patients who are very vulnerable due to their health condition (for example they are on renal dialysis or having cancer treatment).

High Sheriff of Hampshire Community Awards

The High Sheriff of Hampshire 2015/16 Lady (Louisa) Portal has announced the launch of the High Sheriff Community Awards and is calling for public servants, voluntary groups and individuals to submit their entries for the annual awards. The awards are designed to showcase the vibrant culture that is alive in Hampshire, and inspire others to make Hampshire a better, safer county for us all.

The deadline for nominations is 26 January.

Shortlisted nominees will be contacted at the end of February and the awards will be presented on 16 March 2016 at the Great Hall in Winchester.

Older People’s Cancer Voices The Older People’s Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) have released a series of short films bringing to life their programme of advocacy support for older people affected by cancer. OPAAL’s Older People’s Cancer Voices project, funded by Department of Health, supports older people affected by cancer to engage

with health and social care professionals to raise awareness of the issues that are important to them, and to disseminate messages about the benefits of advocacy support.

This project is about amplifying the voices of older people affected by cancer so that health and care practitioners and commissioners see the value of advocacy.

Pension Wise Helping you to understand your pension

Up and running for more than eight months, the government-backed Pension Wise service offers free and impartial information to people about their options with defined contribution pension schemes.

Across the network, Citizens Advice has delivered over 12,000 face-to-face appointments and high satisfaction scores from clients across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire have been reported.

Sarah Carter, Operations Manager at Citizens Advice Rushmoor, explained what is offered at a typical Pension Wise appointment. “Some people come to the service with very specific questions whilst others just want an overview of what they can do with their pension savings. We try to take account of the individual’s general personal and financial situation as this can have a huge bearing on what decision to take and when to start withdrawing their pension.

“For some people, their pension savings will affect their claim to means -tested benefits like pension credit – even in cases where they decide to defer taking any money from their pension until they are older. Others are worried about how taking their pension as a single lump sum or via one of the new flexible ways of drawing it may affect their tax situation.

“We don’t give financial advice or tell people what to do with their money. However, we can refer people to their local Citizens Advice office for advice and benefit checks and signpost them to other ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 5

Also by talking through the implications of the different options available we try to ensure people understand their pension more clearly and to explain what the jargon means. Some of the language used such as the ‘Open Market Option’, which simply refers to the option individuals have to buy their annuity from another pension company, can obscure what choices are available. In the past the majority of people who bought an annuity didn’t shop around for the best deal and lost substantial amounts of money as a result.

“One of the most common scenarios we encounter is people visiting Pension Wise who are keen to continue working beyond the age of 55 and to build up a larger pension pot for the future to finance their retirement. We talk them through how a defined contribution pension scheme works and suggest useful questions to pose to their pension companies to check how much the provider is charging them to look after their money and how successfully they are investing their pension funds.

“One aspect of the new pension freedoms, which affects everyone, is the steady growth of financial crime. All our guiders try to ensure that none of the people who come for appointments with us fall victim to financial scams. Clearly, anyone who does not understand how their pension arrangements work or what the rules are with regard to issues such as tax are more vulnerable to these sort of scams. As well as providing more information on pensions, we give helpful tips on how people can protect themselves more effectively.”

OPEN Eastleigh: How we’re tackling malnutrition ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 6

A step in the right direction towards healthy nutrition Older People’s Essential Nutrition (OPEN) is a project, supported by Wessex Academic Health Science Network, that looks to reduce the number of older people who are malnourished (undernourished) in Eastleigh.

We often see the problems of obesity in the media, yet malnutrition is a serious condition which costs the NHS over £19 billion every year. If you’re malnourished, you’re more likely to need to visit your GP, go into hospital more often, and stay in hospital for longer.

We want to change this by preventing and treating malnutrition.

As 93% of people with malnutrition live in the community, you probably know someone at risk; or may even be at risk yourself. If you’re worried about yourself or someone else, what can you do? Information Equal Access to Health Information It’s fair to say there’s no shortage of information about cancer available to people today, however we have been told that Macmillan have on their website six new videos exploring the experiences of people with cancer who are deaf, blind or have a learning disability. The Borough of Eastleigh has been named in the Top 20 places to live in the United Kingdom A study of quality of life indicators, published Friday 18 December by the Halifax banking chain, puts the borough at number 18 in the national rankings. Factors including employment levels (Eastleigh has the third highest nationally at 85.3%), life expectancy and health, crime rates, average earnings - and even the weather - were taken into account in compiling the survey.

The south east scores highly, accounting for 27 out of the top 50 districts in the study. Hart and Winchester are the other two Hampshire local authority districts to feature in the top 20.

Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, Councillor Keith House, welcomed the survey findings. He said: “We are pleased that Eastleigh Borough has been included in the top 20 places to live in the United Kingdom. The Borough Council’s corporate plan commits us to promoting prosperity, environmental sustainability and the health of our residents and it is good to see that these ambitions are mirrored in the Halifax study.”

Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said: "Many areas in south eastern England … perform well in terms of average earnings, employment rates, health and the weather. But the South doesn’t have it all its own way, and there are areas in the North which score highly on school exam results, and physical environment characteristics such as low population densities and low traffic flows."

Training Effective communicating strategies to manage resistance and negativity Tuesday 22 March 2016, 9.30am-12.30pm This clinical training session will look to address the often difficult scenario of interacting with individuals who present as being resistant and challenging.

Drawing on over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr Richard Maddicks will identify some of the common behaviours associated with resistance, such as arguing, denying and interrupting as well as look at thoughtful ways to prompt and encourage individuals in a way which reduces the probability of a hostile or negative response.

A large segment of the strategies discussed will be underpinned by motivational interviewing techniques and a very interactive approach is always key to this training.

The Trust does not maintain a website or an email address and does not have a formal application form. Applications must be made in writing by providing a summary of the proposed project alongside costings, financial accounts and details of fundraising activities. The Percy Bilton Charity Grants are made to organisations and individuals in need throughout the UK. Organisations assisting disadvantaged youth, people with disabilities and older people may apply for grants towards capital expenditure. Social workers may apply on the behalf of individuals who have a disability or mental health problem, or who are over 65, for grants to purchase basic furniture, equipment and clothing. The Sarah Kinsley Fund The Sarah Kinsley Fund can assist with the purchase of special equipment or services that are not available from the National Health Service or Department of Education or other statutory body. To enable the Sarah Kinsley Fund to provide help and support they require a referral from a professional, such as a Doctor, Social Worker, Paediatrician or Educationalist who knows the child and understands their specific needs and requirements. All possible avenues of statutory funding should already have be explored and exhausted.
