Welcome to our Spring Carers Newsletter.

Coming up over the next few months we have lots planned which we hope you can attend.

We are holding two life skills workshops, details on page 6, Dementia Awareness and Managing challenging behaviour in young people.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Kate O'Connell's Christmas Decoration Fused glass workshop so she is running two further courses making items with fused glass in the Spring.

Our friends at Itchen Valley Country Park have put together another wonderful itinerary for a spring woodland activity morning, we can’t wait to get cooking on the campfire again!

For those of you who receive our newsletter by post, please look at details of our new computer cafe starting in Chandlers Ford library. We send lots of information out to carers via email which people who don't have an email miss, it would be great to get more people accessing the online world—please give it a go if you can - we promise to be gentle with you!

Carers Workshops were held for respite and creativity to prepare for Christmas.

Carers produced some lovely Glass Christmas decorations in a 2 hour workshop run by volunteer, Kate O’Connell at One Community’s building in Eastleigh. Amazing individual pieces were developed from various scraps of glass and then fused together in the kiln back at Kate’s studio.

The Christmas Wreath Workshop held in the lovely setting of the Itchen Valley Country Park Adult Carers Christmas Wreath making Barn, gave carers the chance to step workshop – out and be ‘at one’ with natural ITCHEN VALLEY COUNTRY PARK materials and to produce these 26 November 2015 brilliant wreaths. They were shown by workshop leader, Kim Peters, how to bend a framework of reeds to support the foliage, dried fruit, cinnamon sticks etc., used to decorate the wreath.

I think the Christmas Wreath Workshop was an absolutely fantastic morning which I really enjoyed (can we do it next year too?). The lady leading the group was really friendly & helpful. We all had so much fun and needed to keep out of each other's way while winding the very long willows into our wreath shape. Once our willow ring was made we could come together, then create our own individual master pieces and have a bit of a laugh, at the same time along with eating mince pies and drinking mulled wine. It was a truly fantastic fun, relaxing and chilled morning in good company.”

WELL DONE! Funds raised for Mayor’s Charity Appeal and Carers Centre Thank you to all of you who contributed to supplying materials and made Christmas Stockings to help us decorate the Grotto at the museum.

The Stockings were filled with candy canes, and chocolate coins and afterwards were sold from the Carers Centre stand at The Ageas Bowl Christmas Carol Event on Sunday 13 December. This raised a further £100 towards Carers Centre funds.

Carers Christmas Party 2015 at the Fleming Park Bowling Centre. Everyone received a Christmas gift which was kindly donated by the Carers Action Network. One of our carers, George Wilson, was ‘Singing Santa’ for the day and was very entertaining. Here are some photos of us enjoying the festivities. Photographs courtesy of Pete Lisle Photography.

We had a ‘Crazy Christmas Accessory’ Competition. Caroline (below) was the winner but there were a lot of creative entries.

1st Our wonderful ‘Singing Santa’, AKA George Wilson, got everybody joining in and having fun, especially with his brilliant rendition of ‘12 Days of Christmas’

All in all, it was a fun day with good food (all be it a bit too watery gravy for a some tastes!), great company and a relaxing atmosphere.

News Your spotlight on local services

Healthwatch Hampshire has sponsored One Community to gather information representing the views of the public. The aim of local Healthwatch is to give citizens and communities a stronger voice to influence and challenge how health and social care services are provided within their locality. Many thanks to those of you who completed and submitted the survey in our October Newsletter, some of the highlights are below The good news is that the majority of responders felt that their GP understood their and their cared-for persons needs. 

The predominant response regarding experiences of GPs was positive with 58% believing their doctor understood their health needs, as well as their cared-for person’s, with 23% disagreeing and the remainder neither agreeing nor disagreeing.



12.5% believe that the GP practice does not provide all the information needed to fulfil their role as a carer.

The areas of concern appear to be transport and extra time to talk. 

30% of the feedback group have transport issues with 46% finding it hard to leave the cared-for person on their own in reception, and 46% do not feel that their doctor can give them extra time to talk should they need it.

Do you care for someone with Dementia?

Derek Healey from Carronade Care Training will be running a Dementia Awareness Course to help you learn about the practicalities of living with a person with dementia. This includes communication, coping with differences in behaviour, understanding the different stages of dementia and how to enjoy spending time together. Events coming up ...

Helping Young People to Manage Their Behaviour and Emotions Positively Thursday 10 March 2016 or Wednesday 4 May 2016 10.00 am - 2.00pm Venue: One Community, 16 Romsey Road, Eastleigh Managing Strong Emotions and Behaviour Positively with Lorraine Lee (Dip. Child Psychology) This exciting new workshop will help parents and carers to understand the strong connection between emotions and behaviour. It will look at the strongest emotions that young people feel and how these emotions can build up and eventually spill over. Parents and carers will gain tips on how to stop small issues becoming big emotional episodes. This workshop will provide attendees with information on age appropriate behaviour (including additional needs) followed by practical tools and strategies for managing challenging behaviour.

Topics covered : Recognising triggers and parents’ own stress points; what happens in the brain when we get angry; interrupting anger at the right point; techniques for verbal and physical anger; how to put things right after an angry episode; which behaviours will parents need to support children/young people in; boundaries and limits—and helping children to understand them. Get Crafty! A chance to make a few presents ready for Easter and/or Father’s Day or just to treat yourself!

Glass Workshops with Kate O’Connell, at One Community, 16 Romsey Road, Eastleigh SO50 9AL.

Tuesday 1 March 2016 – 1.00 - 3.00pm – making fused Glass Jewellery pendants and sun catchers ready for Easter.

Wednesday 13 April 2016 – 10.00am - 12.00pm – make coasters or sun catchers, perhaps ready for Father’s Day! A fee of £6.50 per person to cover your materials and firing time costs will be collected on the day.

Please note your objects will take approx. 2 weeks to be fired after making and we have allowed for the first date to get items back in time for Easter.

Care & Respite Tel 023 8090 2455 Offering carers a few hours respite from their caring responsibilities each week, with trained staff providing activities for the cared-for person, preparing a light snack if required, or a trip out in a car, coffee and cake, depending on capabilities and interests.

Day Centre Services Tel 023 8090 2407 With 6 day centres which offer a range of activities for older people to help them to live independently, socialise, while providing respite to carers. The centres cater for people who have dementia or physical disability. Requires an initial assessment made at home.

Mops & Shops Tel 023 8090 2455 This service is for anyone who is unable to do their own housework for whatever reason. The Home Support Workers can only undertake housework and shopping tasks; e.g., general cleaning, vacuum cleaning, changing beds, washing and ironing.

Lifeline Tel 023 8090 2416 or 2417 A telephone linked support service aimed at vulnerable people living independently. In an emergency, the client presses a panic button, worn on the person, alerting by telephone a 24-hour control centre where assistance can be summoned immediately. Key safes also provided and fitted.

Eastleigh Garden Share Tel 023 8064 1202 This scheme brings together growers who would love the space to grow their own fruit and veg with garden owners who can no longer manage their gardens but would love to see their gardens more productive again.

Eastleigh Visiting Scheme Tel 023 8090 2400 Volunteers visit people in their own homes for an hour or two to offer some company, and is for those who live on their own and are unable to get out easily. A referral is required via a professional agency, GP, social worker , community care or social group. Referral forms are available from One Community.

Community Transport Tel 023 8090 2414 Transport can be provided for group transport (minibus hire) for community and charitable organisations who are registered members of One Community.

Dial-A-Ride Tel 023 8090 2450 or 2432 A door to door transport service for people living in the borough of Eastleigh, for transport throughout the borough, who find it difficult or impossible to use ordinary bus services. Operates 6 days a week and 3 days a week a service to West Quay Shopping Centre, Southampton.

Hedge End Park Minibus Tel 023 8090 2432 Provides door to door transport for people with disabilities to take them from home to the superstores at Hedge End, Monday-Friday.

Parish Link Minibus Tel 023 8090 2414 Supplies a Thursday service linking neighbouring villages in the parishes to shopping facilities in Eastleigh town centre.

Young Carers Tel 023 8090 2465 Support for carers aged 8 -18 years who live in the Eastleigh Borough. Giving them time off from caring and an opportunity to make friends with other young people in a similar situation. Aims to empower Young Carers and provide them with positive experiences.

One Community Information & Support (OCIS) Tel 023 8090 2405 Provides information on benefits, services, help with forms, advocacy and referral to other agencies as required.

Community Development Team Tel 023 8090 2400 Offers a service to all local voluntary and community groups to provide information, advice and guidance for the running of a local group or charity. DBS service available.

Volunteer Centre Eastleigh Tel 023 8090 2458 Promotes volunteering, matching volunteers with volunteer-involving organisations.
