Emergency Wristband Initiative One Community has launched a new service, which is destined to transform the lives of anyone who has concerns for their health and wellbeing while they are out and about.

The One Community wristband is comfortable, visible, durable, waterproof and washable and has a unique ID for each customer.

If you get into any kind of difficulty while you are out anyone who comes to your aid can call the emergency number on the band and quote the ID number.

Highly trained operators, available 24/7, will instantly know your name, where you live and will be able to access the instructions for assistance you have given for such an occasion.

One Community is always on the look out for ways to help people maintain their independence and get the most out of life, while providing peace of mind for customers and their loved ones.

This simple and effective system is already proving popular with customers. It can be used as a standalone service or in conjunction with a Lifeline alarm system for the home.

When you sign up for the service, you will receive a personal alert wristband, ID registration and set-up, a 12-month monitoring charge and unlimited calls 24/7.

One Community News Celebrating Volunteers’ Week I love Volunteers’ Week, each year. It’s very busy but a great opportunity to get all our volunteers together just to say thank you, as One Community could not function without their dedication, support and compassion.

I often reflect on why people volunteer. I started aged 15 doing my Duke of Edinburgh Award and visited a charming lady called Lily. She was quite a character and had many lovely stories to share with this young girl who went to see her to read her post.

(Not necessarily what we would ask a 15 year old to do now, but it was a long time ago!)

I have continued to volunteer and still take time outside my day job to offer free time. So why do we do it?

Some of us want to learn new skills, some to make new friends, some to have a sense of community and play a part in the local area.

At a time when we have atrocities such as we’ve seen in Manchester, a desire to unite together is even more important. So a big THANK YOU to everyone reading this because, I suspect, you all volunteer somewhere, at some time.

Green Tips There are a few things we can all do to have a positive impact on the planet, to avoid waste, conserve resources and fight climate change. Here’s our monthly tip: Summer Green Tips Summer has just arrived, so this month I want to suggest some simple eco-friendly tips that will save you energy, water and money.

conditions. Rather than leave your heating set to keep a constant temperature, many of you will be able to turn your heating off altogether and just wear a jumper on those early mornings while the house warms up.

Let in some light. Why waste electricity in your house or workplace, when all you need to do is open the blinds and you’ve got light!

Air dry your clothes outside rather than tumble dry. But given the unpredictability of our weather, and if there’s no one home when it rains, you might want to position the washing under a covered area if available. It is also possible to get a covered rotary dryer.

Why not pledge to use your bike more often, particularly when travelling short journeys? You won’t need to pay for fuel or anywhere to park and you will get some exercise. Very often these journeys are quicker door-to-door than by car.

If you are a nervous cyclist or haven’t been on a bike for a long time, there are groups out there to help you improve your cycling techniques. https://myjourneyhampshire.com/cycle. Eastleigh Borough Council offers Cycle Training for Adults at the offer price of 2 hours for £5 for anyone that lives or works in the Borough. https:// www.eastleigh.gov.uk/cycling There are regular guided routes organised by British Cycling volunteers and Breeze offers women only sessions. You can beat the dry periods by getting a water butt, but there are other ways to water your garden. When you’ve finished washing up reuse the washing up water on your plants. The same can be done for bath water, but the water transfer might be more difficult!

When planning your garden think about native and water resilient plants. They will survive our dry periods with minimal water. Cover the earth with mulch or bushy plants. Any water that makes its way into the soil will be partially protected from the sun and help the surrounding plants.

Recycle for Hampshire has teamed up with Get Composting to offer great value Compost bins and water butts https://getcomposting.com/. But you might be able to pick up a cheap one at the Household Recycling Centre or even make one by upcycling other materials.

One Community News Community Showcase Re-Scheduled

Showcasing voluntary and community activity in Eastleigh One Community is planning to hold a Community Showcase day to celebrate the amazing diversity of voluntary and community activity in the Borough of Eastleigh. The idea of the day is to promote the services provided by the voluntary and community sector, the activities people can get involved with and the volunteering opportunities available.

Our original venue for 17 September 2017 has fallen through, but we’re working on alternative dates and venues, so please watch this space.

Meanwhile, our second Community Showcase for the Borough of Fareham will be held on Saturday 1 July - details below.

Commemorating the End of Southern Steam We are very excited about a forthcoming event on 15 and 16 July, which will include the appearance of a real -life steam engine, right in the middle of Eastleigh among other attractions.

This town centre event links with an exhibition at Eastleigh Museum running from 8 July to 9 September.

The Exhibition: Come and find out about the Watercress Line's flagship steam engine, Canadian Pacific. This fast and powerful engine was built in Eastleigh Works in 1941 by a workforce made up of male and female workers. Affectionately nicknamed CanPac or CP she has had a fascinating 75 year life that began during the Second World War and when restored will continue.

The restoration of this magnificent engine is part of a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project costing approx. £1.5 million.

Throughout this exhibition there will be a fun train themed trail through the museum for children to enjoy—free—with prizes for all correct entries.

Horizon 20:20 More & Better is an arts intervention programme running in Hampshire’s six local authority-led Education Centres (PRUs). The aim of the project is to prove the positive impact that arts and culture has on young people within non-mainstream education.

This programme has been running since September 2016 and already there has been a whole array of exciting and inspiring activity taking place. Protect your organisation from a cyber security attack

By NCVO/Knowhow Nonprofit As a charitable organisation you’re constantly dealing with the sensitive information and data of your most precious asset – your supporters, members or donors.

Their personal details and donations could be at risk if you don’t suitably protect your computers. There is a bewildering array of malicious software out there: from worms to Trojans and phishing. These often masquerade as trustworthy web sites, but all to trick you and acquire your sensitive information.

According to security experts—despite the threats— many charities do not secure themselves properly, which obviously could result in a breach of security, loss of data or just wasted time as you try to recover the situation.

There are ways to safely store the information your charity holds, covered in this article, but what about software that can protect your PCs? The following steps will help you take precautions.

Things you'll need Your computers—running Windows, Apple iOS or Linux.

Install anti-virus software  It is the job of your anti-virus software to keep track of the latest security problems and shield you from their effects. It should detect known viruses on your computer and eliminate them.

In some cases it will also stop viruses getting on to your machine.  Windows Defender is built into the latest Windows operating system, but there are also many well respected anti-virus software packages available.  Symantec and BitDefender are available at heavily discounted prices for charities from Technology Trust. AVG and Avast are free for personal use, with discounted rates for charities.

They all have different strengths and weaknesses. Look at reviews and ask for up-todate expert advice.  Clamwin is an open source free virus killer which can be used at home or in the office free of charge.

If you already have anti-virus software on your computer you should NOT install a new program before you uninstall the old one. Rather than doubling ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 5

Governance Guidance your protection, the one is very likely to treat the other as hostile and cause problems.

Many charities can set their anti-virus or spyware software to scan the internet more frequently—hourly in some cases—for new threats, or download security patches more regularly. Others set their anti-virus software to protect their web gateways, often forgotten, as well as email.

Keep your system up to date If your Operating System is not updated regularly it will not be able to protect your computer from the latest security threats. Anti-virus software may not prevent this, so you must keep system files up to date too.  The Windows Update feature should be enabled by default which will work in the background to download and install updates at a suitable time when you know the computer is on, but not in use. Devices running Apple IOS and Linux have similar features. Don't skip applying these updates when the operating system asks to download them.  Often a restart will be required for the updates to take effect.  Also allow programs or apps (such as your Office Suite) which run on your computer or device to be updated when requested.

Install Spybot and Ad-aware You can tackle almost all spyware or malware by installing specialist software on your computer, much of which is free and relatively easy to install and keep up to date.  For example, a piece of software called Spybot – Search & Destroy can detect and remove malware of different kinds from your computer.

An alternative is Ad-Aware, that provides advanced protection from known data-mining, aggressive advertising, and other forms of malware.  Alternatives to Spybot include Windows Defender, which is part of the latest Windows operating systems. Makers of popular anti-virus software such as Bitdefender and Symantec also have anti-spyware products which you can pay for (although at a discounted rate for charities via Technology Trust).

NOTE: Always back-up your data before installing anything new; these sites are safe but it is a good policy to adopt.

Firewalls Firewalls also prevent threats from reaching PCs. These prevent software installed on a PC from communicating with the internet unless specifically allowed to. This stops software containing malware from broadcasting personal information to hackers over the internet.

Firewalls come in two varieties: hardware that might be incorporated into your router or internet modem; and software. Experts recommend running both because some laptops can be used away from the office hardware firewall.

Block pop-ups  When using a browser such as Firefox or Edge to access the internet you may notice that lots of small windows "pop up" over the page you’re visiting—containing anything from promotional material to obscene material. These may be distracting, confusing or offensive, but if you click on them they can also download hidden malware such as viruses and spyware.  Pop-up blockers block these extra browser windows and the latest version of most browsers now contain one, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox. Google also offers a reliable pop-up blocker that is easy to install and use. It adds a toolbar to the top of your browser window and comes with access to other Google tools such as a news reader.

Working away from the office As a modern, accommodating organisation, you more than likely have many volunteers, employees working from home or out in the field, whose computers are much harder to protect from hackers and malware.

However it is as important to take precautions on these computers too.

If staff are using their own PC ensure they follow these guidelines to protect it and ask them to sign an Acceptable Use policy.

Ask users to set strong Usernames and Passwords including use of special characters (e.g. £ $ ! symbols) for sites they access and consider encryption of files as an extra precaution should a device get lost or stolen. Websites should not allow an unlimited number of attempts to enter usernames and passwords.

Be aware of connecting to untrusted or unsecured WiFi networks (e.g. in Cafes) which could open up your computers to attacks or expose data

Governance Guidance/Information transferred to the Internet.

Some organisations may issue employees with a key, a key ring or card which displays a security number that changes every 60 seconds on an electronic display. As well as entering a password and username, a remote user must submit that security number to verify who they are.

Hampshire Prevent Partnership Board Survey The Hampshire Prevent Partnership Board has asked for assistance in circulating an on-line staff survey on Prevent to voluntary and community organisations across the Hampshire County Council area.

Hampshire County Council is undertaking the survey as part of the run up to a planned external review of local Prevent arrangements taking place in July.

The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete. The purpose is to gather information from front line operational staff across a range of organisations to ascertain the current awareness and understanding of PREVENT and related processes, where concerns about possible radicalisation are identified.

The survey is not a test and names will not be recorded. The information gained will be used by the Prevent Partnership Board to help develop further information and training. The survey will close on Friday 16 June 2017.

Hampshire Trading Standards Service Doorstep Callers – Property Maintenance Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning the public to be wary of cold callers at the door offering property maintenance work, including roof work. Reports have been received from the Hedge End and West End area, but the warning applies to all of Hampshire.

Consumers have statutory rights when buying at the door, including a 14-day right to cancel for goods over £42, the right to a refund, replacement or repair if the goods are faulty, falsely described or not fit for purpose. However, those rights can only be exercised if the seller is a trader, and if they give full and correct contact information. Members of Hampshire County Council Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme are fully audited to ensure their trading practices are legal, honest and fair. All members have been checked for trustworthiness and compliance with consumer protection laws. Goods range from cleaning products, toiletries, clothes, toys and a range of other items that can be used to:  Give to people you support  Clean and maintain facilities  Fill goody bags for events Although not a traditional funder, In Kind Direct helps charities to save money on everyday essential items.

Charities can then use the money they’ve saved for other more important projects/outgoings.

In regards to how they work, charities pay a small handling charge for the service. This helps contribute towards the costs of running a warehouse, staff, packaging and delivery. There’s no extra charge for delivery. Registration is free!

Police, the British Red Cross, and the Lord Mayor of Manchester are urging people wishing to help to give to the We love Manchester appeal, launched by the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s Charitable Appeal Trust or to other registered charities.

The British Red Cross, which has been active on the ground in Manchester and has extensive experience of coordinating large fundraising operations, is supporting the appeal. Other genuine appeals launched to support people in Manchester are understood to now be pointing people towards the We love Manchester fund. The Manchester Evening News, who launched the We Stand Together, have joined forces with the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

The fund will support people who have been injured or bereaved by the attack. Donations will help alleviate suffering and ensure victims and their families do not face short-term financial difficulties.

The Commission is taking the unusual step of encouraging people wishing to give to donate to the We love Manchester fund to reduce the risk of fraud and ensure funds donated reach those they are intended for.

The Fundraising Regulator, which regulates charity fundraising, has joined calls for the public to give safely.

Check before you give Charity Commission Advice 

Advice on Charitable Giving Generous public should make sure donations go to genuine charities supporting the victims in Manchester, says charity regulator The Charity Commission is encouraging people wishing to support the victims of the terrorist attack in Manchester to donate to a genuine charitable appeal.

It says that the great British public are always generous in their support for charities and this has already been reflected via the many giving sites set up to support the victims and families of the appalling attacks in Manchester.

If you do not wish to give to the recommended appeal, make sure you are still giving to a registered charity. To do this, check for a charity registration number. You can verify this on the online register of charities.

Be more cautious about people collecting for general charitable causes, such as ‘for sick children’ – make sure you’re giving to a registered charity.

When approached by collectors, check whether they are wearing a proper ID badge and that any collection tin is sealed and undamaged.

If in doubt, ask the collector for more information—a genuine fundraiser should be happy to answer questions and explain more about the work of the charity.

Never feel under pressure by a fundraiser into making a donation immediately.

Local Autism Directory For Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth  The Local Autism Directory (LAD) is a free online directory. You can find the directory on the Autism Hampshire website. Funding/Events

Round 3 of the Solent Community Grants Programme is open for Applications Closing date for Round 3 of Grant Applications is Friday 16 June 2017.

This programme has been created by Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and Round 3 is supported by the European Social Fund (ESF), HIWCF fundholders, Hampshire County Council and Portsmouth City Council. The fund provides grants of £10,000 to £30,000 to organisations working in the Solent LEP area who are able to reach and work with economically inactive individuals with complex barriers to employment, enabling them to move closer or into employment.

The grants are available from projects running between 1st October 2017 and 31st March 2018.

Round 3 has £213,000 available for applications specifically targeting inactive participants, this includes people who are not seeking work and not currently available to work such as long-term sick, people with disabilities, and those caring for family, moving them into job searching or employment.

Only projects directly benefiting Solent LEP residents within Hampshire and Portsmouth will be funded.
