Queen’s Award for One Community One Community is to receive the highest accolade for voluntary groups in the UK, The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The 2018 awards were announced today, Saturday 2 June, following a rigorous process of assessment and selection. We believe we are the first CVS in Hampshire to achieve the award.

Chair of One Community Sri Kandiah said: “We are deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award in recognition of One Community’s work. Voluntary service lies at the heart of all we do, and our many services that support local people depend on the efforts of our

170 volunteers.”

One Community News We are publishing Network a couple of days later than usual in order to include the wonderful news you have probably already read on the front page. In Volunteers’ Week, One Community is delighted to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the work of our amazing team of volunteers – supporting members in our Day Centres, sorting out scooters in Shopmobility, providing front of house services in the museum and information centre, visiting lonely people, supporting young carers, undertaking research projects or admin work in our offices, fitting Lifelines, driving minibuses, and being responsible for our governance as Trustees - and more besides - and always with a smile.

We all know that without the contribution volunteers make to society, the country will collapse, and so we will be accepting the award on behalf of every volunteer we work with.

I have been a volunteer for over 40 years, taking on various roles since my school suggested doing the Duke of Edinburgh award. I was asked to visit Lily, a lovely lady who lived alone and needed help to read her letters. Over time my whole family helped Lily, Dad fixed her kitchen door, Mum did her shopping when it snowed, and Uncle Roy took her to the hospital. I still remember Lily with affection.

The world still has many Lily’s of all ages. When you volunteer and you know you have helped someone else, that is a unique feeling. So on behalf of One Community and all the Lily’s out there: Thank you to all volunteers, young or old, whatever you do, it does make a difference.

The Great British Bee Count Join the Friends of the Earth bee survey running until 30 June 2018 and discover how to help bumblebees and solitary bees this summer.

Friends of the Earth have produced a free app to help you identify and record different species.

You’ll also get a handy bee-friendly plant guide, and tips for creating pollinator habitats.

The Great Stag Hunt The magnificent stag beetle needs your help. This endangered species has become extinct in many parts of the UK, but together we can protect those that remain, before it is too late. Nominations for the award must be made by someone from outside the group and be supported by two letters – in our case these came from a civic leader and a beneficiary of one of our services. Local assessment panels look at all the nominations and decide which ones to send to the National Award Committee. The committee makes recommendations to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which sends a final list to the Queen for her approval.

We had already planned a programme of events and activities to celebrate our 40 th anniversary year, but this crowning achievement – in Volunteers’ Week – is a marvellous surprise and an honour that will remain with us always.

Our Day Centre managers had a stall at the Reminiscence in the Park event to raise awareness of dementia, on Sunday 20 May at Royal Victoria Country Park (picture below).

Out and About This Summer

One Community has already been out and about this summer, popping up at various events around the borough. We took our gazebo to the Fryern Funtasia (pictured above) on the early May Bank Holiday at Fryern Recreation Ground; and to the WI Festival on

All these events give us the opportunity to talk to the public about our services and give information about volunteering and voluntary sector support.

Coming up we have the Eastleigh Mela on Sunday July 22 on Leigh Road Recreation Ground, Eastleigh; the Pumpkin Festival on Saturday October 13 at Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley; and the Christmas in Eastleigh event in November—plus others in between.

New Welcome Pack for Charity Trustees

If you are an Organiser or a Committee Member then you are most likely a Trustee for your organisation and you should be aware of your responsibilities and requirements. At One Community we realise the complexities of your roles and this regular column is designed to support you with this.

“Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: Directors, Board Members, Governors, Committee Members.

Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run.

Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.”

A new welcome pack is available for charity trustees which focuses on the main duties of the role.

It provides essential information to help you understand governance basics, financial filing requirements and how the Charity Commission can offer support. It also suggests practical steps that can be taken to carry out trustee duties effectively.

Since 30 April the pack has been emailed to all new trustees who register their email address with the charity Commission. You can sign into their change charity details service and add email addresses for trustees.

The content of the welcome pack has been tested with many stakeholders from across the charity sector. The feedback was that the content would be useful for existing trustees, so the Charity Commission has made it publically available on their website to use as refresher training.

Community Governance Review Have your say - Eastleigh Borough Council is carrying out a Community Governance Review and the proposed changes may affect which parish you live or work in.

Community governance refers to the most local level of decision-making, which is carried out by parish and town councils in England.

From time to time it is important to review these arrangements, including boundaries and the number of councillors in each area, to check that they are working effectively and efficiently.

Eastleigh Good Neighbours Turns 30 One Community would like to congratulate Eastleigh Good Neighbours, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. The group was formed by Eastleigh Churches Together back in 1988 when the existing Boyatt Wood Good Neighbours Scheme and the newly formed Central Eastleigh Good Neighbours Scheme came together. The new group was called the Eastleigh Good Neighbours Scheme and set out to help the community of the central Eastleigh area.

Eastleigh Good Neighbours is a non-profit making community group of volunteers with an aim to help members of the community who are unable to get out and about for whatever reason, are unable to access public transport, or need a bit of help with basic DIY tasks or gardening.

Eastleigh Good Neighbours has been making an enormous difference to the lives of the residents of Eastleigh town for three decades, providing door-todoor transport to medical appointments, or to visit loved ones in hospital or residential care, and by taking people out to do their shopping or to the hairdressers.

The good neighbourly support provided by the scheme also does much to combat social isolation.

In 2017 Eastleigh Good Neighbours did over 1,000 tasks for it’s 180 clients, allowing them to maintain some independence in their lives and in 2018 the group expects to do more.

Vital Resources Available Free of Charge Charities and community groups can now benefit from receiving free resources, courtesy of businesses donating their surplus stocks. The only requirement is that the charities and community groups register at www.givingworldonline.com. There is even an option to request certain products that would truly help the local community, completely free of charge.

Giving World receives goods from businesses all over the country, and advertises the items on the website for charities to request and pass on to their beneficiaries.

Partnership Opportunities Giving World wants to expand its reach by creating partnerships with charities to become accessible to more people in desperate need. By working together, we can minimise delivery costs and pool resources to ensure that people get the help they need.  Do you demonstrate expertise and have a proven track record in working with disadvantaged communities?  Do you have in-depth knowledge of local areas and already established links with other local community groups and charities?  Do you display a similar ethos and values to Giving World, sharing the vision of realising people’s potential and creating a fairer society?

Using Conditional Cautions for Hate Crime From Superintendent Alison Heydari Hampshire Constabulary Lead for Hate Crime The Director of Public Prosecutions has agreed support for three police forces including Hampshire Constabulary to explore the opportunity to apply Conditional Cautions to Hate Crime. In order to do so, we need to understand and secure evidence of community feedback by consulting as widely as possible.

Hampshire Constabulary and the University of Portsmouth are seeking guidance and feedback through a survey. This consultation aims to gauge interest and support for the use of the process and prosecution outcome of a Conditional Caution with

Scheme.

The scheme provides funding and volunteer support to projects that help and improve local parkrun communities. From May 2018, and for the following 12 months, they will provide up to £25,000 to be shared across successful projects. If you’re a UK parkrunner, you can apply for the chance to make a difference to your local parkrun community.

It’s easy to use. By just entering a postcode and choosing an advice topic anyone can find tailored information for their local area, including details of independent advice organisations who can help get the advice and support they need.

Advicelocal helps with questions relating to: welfare benefits and tax credits; council tax; debt and money advice; housing and homelessness; employment and work issues, disability and social care; and asylum and immigration.

FUNDING Leeds Building Society Parkrun Community Reward Scheme Leeds Building Society knows that parkrun plays a huge role in helping people engage with their local communities throughout the UK. Because of that, they want to help improve your local parkrun community through their Community Reward

The Women’s Vote Centenary Grant Scheme is a £1.5 million government fund that will support local and community groups across England in celebrating the centenary of women gaining the right to vote. Sports Relief - Safe, Secure Settled This initiative will invest in projects that are using sport to improve the lives of young people without a safe or secure place to live, helping them to gain the skills and resources to lead safe and positive lives.

A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended a one hour information session and has committed to an action that will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts - from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media.

Come along to this free session to learn more about dementia, what it’s like to live with dementia and how to turn that understanding into action.

Cost: Free Venue: One Community, 16 Romsey Road. Eastleigh SO50 9AL EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT WORK WEDNESDAY 11 JULY 2018, 9.30AM – 4.30PM This one day training session will cover all aspects of Emergency First Aid at Work. At the end of the course learners will have demonstrated competence in basic life support skills and increased their awareness in managing a first aid incident in the workplace. A certificate of competence will be issued and is valid for three years.

Chrysalis Training Chrysalis offers training on all aspects of gender identity and gender reassignment. Contact them for bespoke training by emailing office@chrysalis-gii.org.

Their basic cost is £100 per hour plus expenses, and they will tailor the training to your requirements.

They also offer regular training sessions for a maximum of 8 people, held on the 2nd Thursday of each month in Southampton. Sessions are for three hours, with a break in the middle, tea and coffee are provided. They are held in the afternoon from 2-5pm, or in the evening from 6-9pm.

The forthcoming sessions for next month are:  June 14, 2-5pm, Introduction to gender awareness  June 14, 6-9pm, Working with Transgender clients All attendees will receive brief course materials and a CPD certificate.

They recommend that you only take the Working with Transgender Clients session if you have already taken Introduction to Gender Awareness, as the second course requires a certain level of knowledge. However this session may be booked

Training/Events separately if you feel that you are sufficiently well-informed. Please contact Chrysalis if you wish to discuss this further.

Cost: £40 per person per session. Concessions: £20 per person for voluntary organisations, £10 per person for students and unwaged. If both sessions are booked together they offer discounted fees of £60 per person, or a concession rate for charities of £30 per person.
