2-8 November 2015 is Trustees’ Week. Trustees are the people in charge of a charity. They play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity's work. Trustees' Week is an annual event to showcase the great work that trustees do and highlight opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved and make a difference.

One Community News I’d like to use this month’s Trustees’ Week to commend the work of our member groups, focusing particularly on trustees. I’d like to acknowledge the committees and boards whose work is often behind the scenes and whose contribution is sometimes unseen by the beneficiaries of the services provided by the groups they manage.

The work of the chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary and so on is vital to the operation of each and every one of the widely different organisations that make up the One Community membership.

Many different roles are also reflected in the make-up of an organisation’s trustees, including those who lead on IT, safeguarding, building management and many other issues.

Please remember that whatever your role in your voluntary or community organisation, my team are here to support you and to provide you with advice and information.

Eastleigh Visiting Scheme

Cops and Coffee Mornings The Cops and Coffee mornings that are held at Eastleigh Museum have been extended until the end of the year.

Every other Thursday, between 11am and midday, pop in and you can meet your local neighbourhood Policing Team. The dates for the coffee mornings are 5 November, 19 November, 3 December and 17 December.

Enjoy a coffee, discuss your concerns, get crime prevention advice and tell us your policing priorities. Eastleigh Museum also has some free purse and bag Lanyards. Please pop in to collect yours.

One Community News Tasks for Employee Volunteering Days We are looking for one off tasks for groups of volunteers—such as painting a room, clearing grounds, tidying a beach, etc—we’re open to ideas!

This is your golden opportunity to get a big job done for free!

In the Volunteer Centre we work with several local businesses who give a day or two a year for their employees to go out into the community and volunteer—should they wish to. For the business it addresses their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and provides opportunities for team bonding among their staff.

Please email your requests to the Volunteer Centre on volunteer@1community.org.uk giving a brief description of what the task entails and who from your organisation the company should contact.

In addition to volunteer day tasks, we are also looking for skill share tasks. Could someone from a local business help you with an IT, marketing, finance or legal issue? As above, email us your wish list and we’ll do our best to match you with a local company.

One Community Garden Share There’s a two to three year waiting list for allotments in Eastleigh— up to seven years in some parts of the borough— and there are lots of people keen to grow their own fruit and veg, so One Community has come up with a Garden Share Scheme where people with no land can be matched with those who have a garden but can no longer manage to look after it. The benefits on both sides are enormous. It is distressing for those who look out on a once cherished garden and haven’t the means to look after it, and it’s frustrating not to be able to get gardening for want of the space. Both can benefit from the produce. For a small administrative charge we can match would-be gardeners with a garden in their area. Before you start - make sure you are eligible

Trustee Facts and Figures There are just over 180,000 charities in England and Wales registered with the Charity Commission, and perhaps another 80,000 that do not have to register, (usually because they are too small). These charities are all different, but one thing they have in common is their reliance on trustees.  There are over 1,000,000 trustee positions in England and Wales;  Estimates suggest that almost half of charities have at least one vacancy on their board;  Just 0.5% of trustees in England and Wales are aged between 18 and 24, (compared with 12% of the population as a whole);  The average age of trustees in England and Wales is 57, two thirds are aged 50 and over.  43.4% of trustees are female, and 56% are male.

(Each trustee is counted only once, though some are trustees for more than one charity. The figure for female trustees should be treated as a minimum as only those whose titles are certainly female are included).

About Charity Trustees From the Charity Commission Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as:  directors  board members  governors  committee members Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 4

From the Charity Commission You must be at least 16 years old to be a trustee of a charity that is a company or a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), or at least 18 to be a trustee of any other sort of charity.

You must be properly appointed following the procedures and any restrictions in the charity’s governing document.

You must not act as a trustee if you are disqualified under the Charities Act, including if you:  have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception (such as fraud)  are bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement (eg an individual voluntary arrangement) with a creditor  have been removed as a company director or charity trustee because of wrongdoing There are further restrictions for charities that help children or vulnerable people.

Trustees’ 6 main duties From the Charity Commission 1. Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit You and your co-trustees must make sure that the charity is carrying out the purposes for which it is set up, and no other purpose. This means you should:  ensure you understand the charity’s purposes as set out in its governing document  plan what your charity will do, and what you want it to achieve  be able to explain how all of the charity’s activities are intended to further or support its purposes  understand how the charity benefits the public by carrying out its purposes  Spending charity funds on the wrong purposes is a very serious matter; in some cases trustees may have to reimburse the charity personally.

2. Comply with your charity’s governing document and the law You and your co-trustees must:  make sure that the charity complies with its

Registered charities must keep their details on the register up to date and ensure they send the right financial and other information to the commission in their annual return or annual update. 

3. Act in your charity’s best interests You must:  do what you and your co-trustees (and no one else) decide will best enable the charity to carry out its purposes  with your co-trustees, make balanced and adequately informed decisions, thinking about the long term as well as the short term  avoid putting yourself in a position where your duty to your charity conflicts with your personal interests or loyalty to any other person or body  not receive any benefit from the charity unless it’s properly authorised and is clearly in the charity’s interests; this also includes anyone who is financially connected to you, such as a partner, dependent child or business partner 4. Manage your charity’s resources responsibly You must act responsibly, reasonably and honestly.

This is sometimes called the duty of prudence.

Prudence is about exercising sound judgement. You and your co-trustees must:  make sure the charity’s assets are only used to support or carry out its purposes  not take inappropriate risks with the charity’s assets or reputation  not over-commit the charity  take special care when investing or borrowing  comply with any restrictions on spending funds You and your co-trustees should put appropriate procedures and safeguards in place and take reasonable steps to ensure that these are followed.

Otherwise you risk making the charity vulnerable to fraud or theft, or other kinds of abuse, and being in breach of your duty.

5. Act with reasonable care and skill As someone responsible for governing a charity, you:  must use reasonable care and skill, making use of your skills and experience and taking appropriate advice when necessary  should give enough time, thought and energy to your role, for example by preparing for, attending and actively participating in all trustees’ meetings 6. Ensure your charity is accountable You and your co-trustees must comply with statutory accounting and reporting requirements. You should also:  be able to demonstrate that your charity is complying with the law, well run and effective  ensure appropriate accountability to members, if your charity has a membership separate from the trustees  ensure accountability within the charity, particularly where you delegate responsibility for particular tasks or decisions to staff or volunteers

The BBC Trust has launched a questionnaire to discover audiences' opinions of the government's proposals for the future of the organisation.

It also asks viewers to rate potential replacements for the licence fee.

"The most important voice in the debate is that of the public," said Trust chairwoman Rona Fairhead. "We'll ensure it is heard."

Information Electric Blankets This advice from Hampshire County Council is designed to provide basic guidance to consumers. It is not a complete or authoritative statement of the law. Please pass on to those in your groups who may be at risk.

Every year there are about 1,000 fires caused by faulty electric blankets when around 20 people die and 250 are injured.

It is thought that almost all blanket fires are caused by blankets over 10 years old. If your blanket is over 10 years old, we suggest you replace it with a new one.

 



Only wash or clean your blanket in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Check the blanket frequently for detached tie tapes, frayed edges, scorch marks and loose electrical connections.

Phone the manufacturer to see if they carry out tests, and how much a test would cost, it may be cheaper to buy a replacement periodically.

Buying an electric blanket Ensure that it carries a recognised approvals mark, such as the British Electrotechnical Approvals Board (BEAB) mark, or the International Standard number EN 60967. It will be CE marked.

There are different types of electric blankets including underblankets and overblankets, preheating blankets and all-night blankets. Check what is best for you. Pre-heating blankets are designed to pre-heat the bed and must be switched off or disconnected whilst the bed is occupied. All-night blankets have controls that allow safe all-night use.

Don't buy or use a second hand electric blanket.

Using an electric blanket  Read the instructions and use the blanket correctly.  Check the blanket is not scorched, soiled or wet.  Do not use underblankets on top of the bed covers (ie above the occupant of the bed).  Make sure it is laid flat as folds or creases can damage the internal wiring and cause overheating.  Make sure the lead and controller switch of underblankets are hanging freely and not caught up in the blanket or damaged, and the blanket is securely fitted to the bed.  Switch off or unplug pre-heating underblankets before you get into bed.

Information Twiddlemuffs for Dementia Patients

Do you knit? Have you heard of ‘twiddlemuffs’?

They’re knitted muffs with items attached to keep dementia patients’ hands active and busy. They contain strands of textured ribbons, beads, and various fabrics attached both inside and outside.

People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep their hands occupied. It provides a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation, and keeps hands snug and warm at the same time.

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust is hoping that people will come forward to put their knitting skills to good use to help them to create more twiddlemuffs as part of their dementia awareness work. Don’t worry if you are not an expert; the pattern is very simple.

The Eastleigh Men’s Shed (EMS) is a workshop and social centre for older men living in and around the Borough of Eastleigh.

Eastleigh Men’s Shed is holding a Repair Cafe every Thursday 2-4pm at Pilands Wood Centre, Chamberlayne Road, Bursledon, Southampton SO31 8DT. For further details please phone, 023 8040 5119. Repair Cafes are community led projects designed to reduce waste by repairing faulty household items, which might otherwise be thrown away and go to landfill.

Bring your items along and they will do their best to see if they can be repaired.

Feedback to the CQC The Care Quality Commission is encouraging organisations and groups to let them know at any time what they think about the quality and safety of local health and care services. This means that local people have the opportunity to help inspectors decide when to inspect a service and what to look for. If through the course of your daily work you frequently hear feedback (good as well as bad) about a particular local service, please tell the CQC. If there are recurrent themes, or particular services are regularly discussed, you might consider gathering feedback more formally.

They do have a feedback form on their website but this is not essential. It sets out three short general questions about local services and then a short table which you can use to have your say about specific services. www.cqc.org.uk

NHS Free Health Check The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check of your heart health. Aimed at adults in England aged 40 to 74, it checks your vascular or circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling – but preventable – illnesses. Think of your NHS Health Check as being your "midlife MOT". It checks that some of your body's most important systems are all running smoothly. Among other things, your blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI will all be checked and your results given to you. Crucially, your NHS Health Check can detect potential problems before they do real damage. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented. Your NHS Health Check will assess your risk of developing these health problems and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it. A Tribute to Eastleigh's Railways Book Signing 7 November, 10am-2pm Eastleigh Museum Roger Hardingham, who launched his new book at Eastleigh Museum in August is returning to the museum on 7 November to sign copies of the book for customers. A Tribute to Eastleigh’s Railways is devoted to photographs from the Norman Cox collection. The 128-page book is full of rare black and white photographs collected by Norman while he was working for the railway as a steam engine driver.

Norman collected a vast array of photographs of many subjects to do with transport, but it is his collection of Eastleigh railway photographs that we see in this first volume, covering numerous locomotive classes with views around the station, locomotive works and running shed.

The hardback book, which costs £25, is split into various chapters to include views from the locomotive works dating back to its beginnings and up to the end of steam traction in the south in 1967. Also included is a large collection of fascinating scenes at the locomotive depot in Campbell Road covering locomotives in LSWR, SR and BR times.

Breathe Easy Big Breakfast Breathe Easy Hedge End is holding a Big Breakfast as a fundraising event for the British Lung Foundation.

Twenty-six members of the Hedge End Breathe Easy Group are going to be at the Harvester, Windhover Manor (opposite Tesco off the Bursledon roundabout), at 10am on Tuesday 3 November for breakfast. The group will have lots of leaflets covering all lung conditions – and of course their donation tin.

The event is being held as part of the world COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) month, and the manager at Harvester has kindly offered to accommodate the group and allow them to invite customers to find out more information and hopefully donate to the fund. There will also be a raffle, the proceeds of which will go to the fund.

New Music Makers—Not Just a Choir The New Music Makers are a friendly bunch of people who come together on a Thursday evening to have fun and sing together. They are not just a choir though – they love getting together to enjoy socials, visiting and taking part in numerous musical events and entering fun musical competitions. They've sung at a wide variety of venues, such as The Berry Theatre, Hedge End Village Hall, Hinton Ampner House, Botleigh Grange Hotel, The Ageas Bowl, Brambridge Garden Centre, Bursledon Brickworks, The Thornden Concert Hall, Romsey Abbey, Lulworth Castle, Winchester Cathedral, and many other places.

This year they entered the Karl Jenkins competition on You Tube, joined in the 'Big Sing' at the Hedge End D@rt and put on their usual summer concert. Members can choose whatever they wish to be involved in – so it's a very relaxed atmosphere.

Each week there is the opportunity to enter the New Music Makers 'Bonus Ball', which is a fun lottery run by the choir and, yes, it can be quite lucrative!

The music they sing encompasses virtually every genre – rock, pop, jazz, musicals, choral, ballards, acapella, film theme tunes re-arranged for voices, etc. Every choir member can suggest songs he/ she would like the choir to sing, so members can get to sing their favourite piece – they are very democratic! They also have a large library of scores to choose from.

You don't have to be able to read music to join the choir, just be able to 'hold a tune'. Everyone is fully supported by other choir members in learning their pieces and they also have an online music player, CDs and MP3 downloads to help too. They are ably ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 10

helped along by their musical director and deputy musical director (Michael Goldthorpe and David Farnell). Michael has a wealth of experience when it comes to singing. He was a tenor on the international stage, sung for the BBC Singers, and currently teaches singing in London and locally. David too comes from a solid musical background, singing tenor, and is an accomplished brass band musician. Both make practising and learning great fun and their different conducting styles are most refreshing.

The choir meets in the hall at the back of the Methodist Church, St John's Road, Hedge End, on Thursday evenings 7.30 to 10pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served half way through the evening. The membership fee is £12 a month. The 'singing year' starts in September, after a month's break in August.

Emergency First Aid

Safeguarding Children: Meet the LADO Date: Thursday 5 November 2015 Time: 9.30am-12 noon Venue: Fareham Community Church Cost: £15 The course will provide an opportunity to meet the Hampshire County Council’s Designated Officer (LADO) and aims to give confidence about dealing with concerns with the safeguarding of children, including how to report them and an overview of the process that will follow. This is the only course available that is specifically for Safeguarding leads in voluntary organisations.

At the end of the course attendees will have demonstrated competence in basic life support skills and increased their awareness in managing a first aid incident. Hampshire Substance Misuse Strategy Developing Recovery Capital Workshop Date: Tuesday 17 November 2015 Time: 9am-12 noon Venue: Fareham Community Church, West street, Fareham The 4th in the series of workshops supporting the implementation of the Hampshire Substance Misuse Strategy 2014-17 is being hosted by Hampshire DAAT on 17 November in Fareham Community Church, Fareham between 9am and 12pm. Further details and an agenda for the day will be coming out closer to the date. The theme for the workshop will be “Developing Recovery Capital” and will consider how service users can be supported to achieve recovery through development in the following areas:  Social capital - the resource a person has from their relationships (e.g. family, partners, children, friends and peers);  Physical capital - such as money and a safe place to live;  Human capital – skills, mental and physical health, and employment;  Cultural capital – values, beliefs and attitudes held by the individual.

Applications for grants, not normally in excess of £500, are invited from individuals aged 30 and under or from small groups of young people who believe their actions to be in pursuit of the aims of the Trust. Trustees will meet twice a year to consider applications.

All applications for support will be judged on their own merits and in relation to how they expect to achieve or further the aims of the Trust.
