Fareham’s First Mascot March

Saturday 24 March saw Fareham’s first Mascot March, organised by One Community to celebrate our 40th anniversary, promote local groups and voluntary activity and to raise awareness of support available from voluntary and community sector organisations in the borough.

With the Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham, Cllr Geoff and Mrs Tina Fazackerley, in the lead, the mascots and their friends marched down West Street, to the accompaniment of the Gang Show, via boombox, and shopping trolleys doubling as mini floats.

Watch That’s Solent’s video on Facebook here While the Mascot March was going on, a Country Market at the One Community Information Centre in Osborn Mall, Fareham Shopping Centre, attracted well over 200 visitors.

One Community News For many of us April is a new financial year which brings its own pressures as well as opportunities for new activities. Getting on top of the end of year accounts and adhering to SORP can be daunting (see page 4) but putting it off only causes more pressure and risks losing that essential invoice or two.

Treasurers who normally cope with this are a treasure in themselves and are getting harder to find.

I am sure you will contact our Volunteer Centre (023 8090 2458 or volunteer@1community.org.uk) if you are currently looking for someone but if you have skills to be a treasurer and have some time to spare do please contact us, even if you do not want to take on all responsibilities of attending board meetings.

2018 continues to be a birthday celebration for us, March saw our first mascot march in celebration of our 40th anniversary (see front page), and to raise awareness of voluntary and community groups. In April we raise the new One Community flag at 10:15am on Saturday 7 April in Eastleigh Recreation ground. Please come and say hello.

Lastly, do let us know what events you have planned for the summer and if we can we will try to come along and will certainly be happy to advertise them for you.

Green Tips There are a few things we can all do to have a positive impact on the planet, to avoid waste, conserve resources and fight climate change. Here’s our monthly tip from our environmental friend: Environmentally Friendly Eggs At Easter thoughts inevitably turn to eggs, so here are a few ideas about being environmentally friendly with eggs.

Easter Eggs Chocolate Easter eggs are one of the most overpackaged products we can buy. It’s good to take that into account when choosing your Easter eggs minimising the plastic and looking at recyclable materials.

Composting Eggshells Egg shells are rich in calcium and other minerals that help your garden thrive. Crush egg shells into tiny pieces and use them as compost.

Deterring Slugs Putting a circle of crushed egg shells around a single plant is an old favourite way to keep the slugs away from your tender seedlings.

Using Up Eggs Keep an eye on the use by dates of your eggs, and use them up before they are wasted. You can always whip up a cake or a quiche for the freezer is you can’t eat them straightaway.

Left Over Egg Whites If you’ve used a recipe that only required egg yolks, you can use up the whites by making meringues or a classic chocolate mousse: https:// www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1266/mousse-auchocolat Left Over Egg Yolks If you’ve used a recipe that required only egg whites, you can use up the yolks by making lemon curd, mayonnaise, custard or simply to enrich your pastry.

Governance Guidance Governance Guidance If you are an Organiser or a Committee Member then you are most likely a Trustee for your organisation and you should be aware of your responsibilities and requirements. At One Community we realise the complexities of your roles and this regular column is designed to support you with this.

“Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: Directors, Board Members, Governors, Committee Members.

Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run.

Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.”

The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do Updated 1 March 2018 9. Ensure your charity is accountable You and your co-trustees must comply with statutory accounting and reporting requirements. You should also: 

be able to demonstrate that your charity is complying with the law, well run and effective



ensure appropriate accountability to members, if your charity has a membership separate from the trustees



ensure accountability within the charity, particularly where you delegate responsibility for particular tasks or decisions to staff or volunteers

9.1 Complying with accounting requirements All charities must produce accounts and provide a copy of the most recent to anyone who asks. (You can charge to cover your costs.) The commission will take regulatory action against charities that persistently fail to provide copies of accounts when asked by members of the public or a regulator.

Exactly what accounts your charity must produce depends on whether the charity is a company and how much income it receives. Different rules apply to exempt charities. Find out more about accounting and reporting requirements for charities.

Charities whose income is over £250,000, and all charitable companies, must prepare their accounts and trustees’ annual report in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice - Accounting

Governance Guidance/Information and Reporting by Charities (Charities SORP).

Find out more about the Charities SORP. All registered charities must also provide information annually to the commission. The rules vary according to your charity’s size and structure. Registered charities with: 

income up to £10,000 should complete the relevant sections of the annual return, which include updates to trustees



income above £10,000, and all CIOs, must prepare and file an annual return form



income above £25,000, and all CIOs, must also file copies of their trustees’ annual report, accounts and external scrutiny report (audit or independent examiners’ report)

Failure to submit accounts and accompanying documents to the commission is a criminal offence.

The commission also regards it as mismanagement or misconduct in the administration of the charity.

Providing timely, accurate and informative financial information that will help funders, donors, beneficiaries and others to understand your charity and its work will encourage trust and confidence in it.

Hampshire's "State of the Voluntary Sector" Survey Action Hampshire, with the support of the district Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS), including One Community, recently carried out some research into the state of the voluntary sector in Hampshire.

An on-line survey was circulated around Hampshire’s voluntary and community sector organisations in November/December 2017. A range of questions were posed, most of which were asked in relation to the organisation’s position three years ago.

478 responses were received commenting on issues including demand for services, capacity to deliver services, financial security, volunteering and planning for the future.

Community Gardening Challenge Remember, those trustees who sign the trustees’ annual report and accounts are signing on behalf of the whole trustee body so all of the trustees are responsible for the accounts.

Your charity may also have to report to other regulators, for example, if its activities include providing social housing, education or social care.

Companies must also submit accounts and annual returns to Companies House annually.

Fareham in Bloom encompasses a whole host of initiatives from project work and community gardening to environmental and landscape improvements, all with a focus on horticultural excellence. The Community Garden Challenge gives residents, businesses and allotment gardeners the opportunity to show off their gardening skills with 21 categories to choose from.

Judging takes place 9-20 July, with entries judged on individual merit. Awards range from Bronze and Silver to Silver Gilt and Gold. All participants will receive discounts and promotions at St Margaret’s Nursery in Titchfield and be invited to a celebratory gala evening on 21 September at Ferneham Hall.

Training One Community Training, Workshops and Information Service

MOVING AND ASSISTING PEOPLE FRIDAY 20 APRIL 2018, 9.30AM – 12.30PM This course is suitable for staff and carers who move and assist people or for those who have a supervisory role in a care environment. The course helps to manage the risk of injury and ill health and reminds learners of the need to maintain dignity and to safeguard people.

On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:  Operate within the legal boundaries with regard to the Manual Handling Regulations and the moving and assisting of people.  Carry out risk assessment (PEACE) and understand biomechanics.  Understand safe and unsafe moving and positioning techniques.  Carry out safe sitting to standing and assisted walking techniques.  Select, use and inspect equipment.  Understand the correct use of wheelchair, rotunda and electric stand aid.  Understand and comply with company policy and procedure.

GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION (GDPR) AWARENESS WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY 25 APRIL 2018, 9.30AM11AM Potential issues discussed during this informal awareness workshop will be tailored to the requirements of the learners and may include:  basic definitions of data protection and the drivers behind the GDPR  policies and privacy notices ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 6

obtaining data and consent storage and retention of data access to, sharing and processing data security – data, physical, IT, remote.

By the end of the session learners will have an understanding of what processes they need to put in place before the introduction of the GDPR, and their responsibilities from May 2018 onwards.

On successful completion of this course the learner will be qualified to:  operate within the legal boundaries with regard to the Manual Handling Regulations  use safe manual handling techniques  recognise and avoid injury caused by poor manual handling.  employ good handling techniques using biomechanical principles  carry out manual handling risk assessment  use and carry out visual inspections of handling equipment  understand the types and uses of equipment The second part of this course gives learners the mandatory knowledge and skills required to prevent fire from starting, to effectively react to a fire incident and to act as a fire marshal in the workplace.

The course is aimed at managers and all staff within the workplace. It is tailored to be workplace and premises specific and focuses on the

On successful completion of this course the learner will be qualified to:  Operate within the legal boundaries with regard to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations.  Recognise hazards in the workplace.  Carry out and implement risk assessment.  Manage COSHH.  React to electrical, gas and water emergencies and how to maintain security within the workplace.  Understand how to comply with policy and procedure.

FREE ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS SESSION FRIDAY 25 MA Y 2018, 9.30AM – 10.30AM This awareness session is for those who work with or meet elderly people as their front line clients or in a voluntary capacity, in their home or in a group setting. It will give an insight into the problem of elder abuse:  what is elder abuse?  how to spot it  what to do if you have any concerns Financial abuse will also be covered in the session.

FREE DEMENTIA FRIENDS INFORMATION SESSION TUESDAY 12 JUNE 2018, 9.30AM - 11.30AM Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society led initiative which aims to increase dementia awareness and change the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about dementia.

A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended a one hour information session and has committed to an action that will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts from helping someone to find the right bus to

FUNDING Veolia Environmental Trust Veolia Environmental Trust is now accepting applications for projects taking place this autumn/ winter. Grants of up to £75,000 are available in three areas: community buildings, outdoor spaces, and play and recreation for projects located with five miles of a Veolia Environmental services facility.

Arts Council Project Grants The Arts Council is now accepting applications to its new £97.3 a year programme. The Project Grants programme is replacing Grants for the Arts as well as absorbing some elements of other Arts Council England funds, which have now closed to applications. The programme has been designed to be more open to supporting those working in creative and digital media than the previous Grants for the Arts programme.

Funding/Events Baily Thomas Charitable Fund The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund http:// bailythomas.org.uk/ is a grant making registered charity which was established primarily to aid the research into learning disability and to aid the care and relief of those affected by learning disability by making grants to voluntary organisations working in this field.

The submission deadline for applications seeking funding in excess of £10,000 is 1 April 2018 for consideration at the June 2018 meeting.

If your application is considered under the Small Grants procedure (i.e. if the appeal is for £10,000 and below), then this will be reviewed by the Trustees ahead of the usual meetings and there is therefore no deadline for submitting an appeal.

Meeting point is at Salterns Car Park, Hill Head near to the Rotary Club Wheel House.

The car park has no postcode – the nearest for SATNAV users is PO14 3LR. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Wallace & Gromit's Children's Charity Wallace & Gromit's Children's Charity provides grants to hospitals and hospices to transform the lives of children across the UK. Grant applications are now open and will close on 30 April 2018, with applications reviewed in June 2018. Guidelines on the application process for the above can be downloaded here.

A display of new work in textile and stitch by members of Solent Embroiderers’ Guild. Showing off widely varied techniques and subjects, some on the theme of Titchfield village and all expressing individual interests and skills.

Rotarail 2018 10.30am-5pm, Saturday 28 April Fareham College, Bishopfield Road Fareham PO14 1NH Sixth Rotarail run by Fareham Rotary Club in conjunction with Fareham College. There will be 21 layouts of different gauges and scales with full trade support. There is free on-site parking, full disabled access and refreshments are available in "Eat at 141" in the William Price Building next door where you will also find "Children'’s Corner" provided by Fareham & District Model Railway Club. Cost is £6 for adults whilst children aged 5 to16 will pay £2, in aid of Hampshire based charity FLAT SPACES who provide purpose built holiday and respite accommodation for the less abled, their carers and families.
