Eastleigh Youth Awards

Where else would you find a 7-foot blue teddy bear, a centurion, R2D2 and the Mayor all in one place at one time but at the Community Showcase, Ferneham Hall, on Saturday 1 July.

70 exhibitors demonstrated the full range of voluntary and community sector activities across the borough of Fareham, from CAB to Country Market; Hampshire Conservation to Titchfield Festival Theatre; youth groups to older people’s clubs.

Local choirs provided entertainment throughout the day and 137 men were tested for prostate cancer by PCaSO Prostate Cancer Support Organisation.

600+ visitors found out what’s going on in the borough - new interests and hobbies (from bridge to cosplay); and opportunities to get involved in community life as a volunteer in a huge range of roles.

One Community News While it has been so hot a number of people have said that they have found it hard to sleep, but for most people, in normal temperatures, it is when we have a worry that we find it hard to sleep. This started me thinking what keeps voluntary sector trustees, staff and volunteers awake at night.  Is it the possible changes to zero hours working? (Many groups, including ourselves, have staff on zero hour contracts, and the possible inflexibility of fixed contracts could threaten services)  Is it having enough funding to get to the end of the financial year?  Is it getting a speaker for the AGM? I don’t know the answer to the first two questions, but would like to hear your concerns. Maybe you have other things which prompt you to make a hot milky drink at 4am, if you do and want to share them with a wider audience please contact me.

One Community might have the answers to the last two questions—or at least know where to direct you—so get in touch.

I hope we can all sleep soundly knowing we have made a positive difference through the work that we do.

Green Tips There are a few things we can all do to have a positive impact on the planet, to avoid waste, conserve resources and fight climate change. Here’s our monthly tip from our environmental friend:

Going Green on Holiday When we go on holiday, we shouldn’t leave our green principals at home because our holidays can be the most eco unfriendly period of the year. But what can we do to reduce our impact on the environment?

Here are some tips.

Our chosen destination and method of transport often makes the biggest impact on the environment. But greener travel starts earlier than that, before we even leave home:  Pack light. Not only is it easier getting around but less fuel will be used to transport it.  Carry a reusable water bottle because tap water is far greener than bottled water.  Turn off everything you can at home before you leave, including hot water and heating.

Now let’s talk about travel. Airplanes have a bad press environmentally, for good reason, but they are often the only practical way of getting to far off places. They are also not going to go away, so I’m not going to suggest we stop using them, but let’s use them more efficiently. I support ‘A Free Ride’ which campaigns for a fairer flying tax system that taxes people according to how often they fly.

Buses are the greenest way to travel and often the cheapest too but my preference is to let the train take the strain. Train journeys are relaxing and a great way to travel but it is worth planning in advance to get the cheaper deals. They can be an adventure, too, going abroad. I’ve taken train journeys down to Spain, France and even over to Hungary but I also holiday a lot in the UK. There are still so many places in the UK I’ve never been to.

When at your destination ‘leave no trace behind’ is applicable not only to camping but any accommodation. Buy local and find out what the local recycling possibilities are. Wash clothes only when necessary, hand washing individual items rather than by machine and explore the local area by foot, bike or public transport.

But you don’t have to go away to have a summer holiday because staycations are growing in popularity where day trips and short stays can be just as fun.

Whatever you do this summer enjoy yourself!

One Community News Community Showcase continued from front page Local branches of specialist health groups, such as Parkinson’s UK and Haven Breast Cancer, reported meeting several people who were delighted to find the support they need on their doorstep.

This was the second such event organised by One Community in partnership with Ferneham Hall, destined to be an annual feature of the borough’s life.

One Community extends huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event: Ferneham Hall, and all 70 voluntary and community organisations and choirs who showed the borough what they could do.

The atmosphere was incredible and you could feel the power of all that combined energy harnessed in service to the community.

Next year’s Showcase is in the diary for Saturday 16 June—let us know if you want to have a stand or choir there.

Governance Guidance Governance Guidance If you are an Organiser or a Committee Member then you are most likely a Trustee for your organisation and you should be aware of your responsibilities and requirements. “Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: Directors, Board Members, Governors, Committee Members Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run.

Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.”

The new Charity Governance Code – Essential reading for all trustees

By Sarah Atkinson, Director of Policy and Communications at the Charity Commission I am delighted that the charity sector’s governance code is now in its 12th year and its 3rd edition. The Commission has supported and endorsed the code since its inception. The latest edition has raised the bar in response to the challenges that the sector has faced over the last two years. And awareness of the code is also growing. It’s good news that the consultation on the updated code received over 200 responses including from key players in the sector.

It’s vital that charities get their heads around governance. Following good governance practices, not just paying lip service but really understanding and applying them, could have averted many of the bad headlines of the last two years. It’s more than ticking the boxes. It’s about attitudes and culture, whether a charity puts its values into practice. It’s about how trustees make decisions and how well they understand what’s going on. We have seen the consequences of failing to do that.

But more than avoiding bad, it’s about realising potential, understanding and maximising the difference you make. Everything in good governance should point to your mission and your strategy for achieving it.

In other sectors – the corporate sector, housing, sport, there are potential financial consequences for not complying with the relevant governance code. The Charity Governance Code doesn’t work like that. It’s not enforced by the regulator. The rule is not ‘comply or explain’ but ‘apply or explain’, recognising the diversity of the sector. The same core principles apply to all charities, but they apply in different ways in terms of tailored good practice.

The code starts with a ‘foundation principle’; it should be a ‘given’ that all trustees understand their legal duties (as explained in The Essential Trustee) and are committed to their cause and good governance.

We don’t take trustees’ commitment for granted, but it should be reasonable to expect commitment to translate into finding out about their responsibilities.

In practice this is not always the case, and it’s an area

The code then develops seven principles – leadership; integrity; decision making, risk and control; board effectiveness; diversity; openness and accountability; all underpinning organisational purpose. Why these qualities matter should be selfevident. Many of them are also key drivers of trust and confidence, and can help to demonstrate to beneficiaries, funders and donors that a charity is trust-worthy.

It might look like a lot of detail, but start with the principles – what they are; the rationale – why they matter; and the key outcomes – what difference they should make. How they play out in terms of applying recommended practice will depend on the size and shape of your charity.

The bottom line is, good governance is no longer an optional extra. It’s essential to charities’ effectiveness and probably their survival too. Charities need to be able to demonstrate that they take it seriously, allowing it to change the way they operate.

The Charity Governance Code represents a standard of good governance practice to which all charities should aspire. We encourage all charities to read, follow and apply it proportionately to their circumstances. And if you sign up to the code, go public about it on your website or your annual report.

Be prepared to stand up and be counted, and see the difference that makes.

Serving Hampshire Balancing the Budget Consultation

last nine years. This is due to ongoing national austerity measures; demographic changes reflecting increases in demand for some services; and inflationary pressures.

Through this public consultation, the County Council is seeking residents’ and stakeholders’ views on a range of options for balancing its budget. These include:  reducing and changing services;  introducing and increasing charges for some services;  lobbying central Government for legislative change;  generating additional income;  using the County Council’s reserves;  increasing Council Tax; and  changing local government arrangements in Hampshire.

The County Council is obliged to present all possible options for making savings, regardless of its policy position. At this stage, the County Council is setting out high-level, strategic options, and is not proposing specific changes to services. Any proposals will be informed by feedback from this consultation and subject to further, more detailed public engagement.

Therefore, only examples of potential service changes have been provided.

A detailed Information Pack, providing important background information to the consultation, is available on the County Council’s website. Residents and stakeholders are invited to respond to the consultation online.

Alternatively, paper copies of the Information Pack and Response Form can be requested by emailing insight@hants.gov.uk, and will be available from Hampshire libraries.

Hampshire County Council is running a Serving Hampshire – Balancing the Budget consultation (deadline 21 August).

The Safe & Sound App

Private fostering is very different to general fostering.

If you have someone else’s child in your care, you might well need to let the council know. It could be a “private fostering” arrangement, and the law says the council has to be told about these.

A private fostering arrangement is made between a carer and whoever has parental responsibility for a child, without the council being involved. It involves a child under 16 (18 if disabled) being cared for by someone who isn’t a close relative, for 28 days or more. For example: A single parent with a long-term illness might arrange for their child to be cared for by a friend or neighbour A teenager might fall out with their parents and move in with a friend’s parents If you’re unsure whether a child is privately fostered, ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 8

The safe and sound app is designed to help keep people safe in their own homes. Houses do not catch fire on their own— it is what we do to them that can make us vulnerable to fire.

By completing an easy-to-use questionnaire and reading the personalised report you could reduce the risk to you and your family.

The questionnaire takes approximately 5 min to complete and can be run on a smart phone, tablet or computer.

We will ask for no personal details from you unless you require the report to be sent to you as an e-mail, when we will ask for your e-mail address.

Once sent it is automatically deleted and no one will be able to access it.

The report works on a traffic light system:  green is good  amber mean you have one or two issues  red—please read the report carefully. There are things you can do to make yourself and the people you live with safer If you have had a red signal there is no need to contact the fire service. The report will tell you what you need to do and the fire service will not be contacting you.

Funding FUNDING Arts Council England - Celebrating Age £50,000 - £100,000 Supporting cultural spaces and other organisations to be open, positive and welcoming places for older people; and taking high quality arts and culture into places where older people will find it easier to engage.

Postcode Dream Trust - Dream Fund The Dream Fund gives organisations the chance to deliver the project they have always dreamed of, but never had the opportunity to bring to life. We are asking charitable organisations across Great Britain to think big, be ambitious and collaborate with other not -for-profit partners to deliver their dream project.

The Dream Fund allows charities to apply for up to £1,000,000 to deliver their ‘dream’ project in Great Britain (Scotland, England or Wales) in 20182020. There is a total award fund of £3,000,000.

Youth Social Action Youth Social Action has huge potential to create opportunities and skills development for young people, benefiting local people and places.

The aim of this grant is to raise the level and quality of youth social action. The programme aim is to increase youth social action by 50% by 2020 taking the percentage of young people that volunteer from 40% to 60%.

Social action involves activities such as campaigning, fundraising and volunteering, all of which enable participants to make a positive difference to their communities.

Social action develops the skills and knowledge of young people that employers look for. The definition of young people is between 10 and 20, and up to 25 for disabled young people.

Big Lottery Fund and the Office for Civil Society have invested £2 million this year to fund groups delivering local youth social action opportunities.

Local fundraising is also a key part of the Youth Social Action programme.
