Senior Citizens Fair

Fareham certainly has a lot to offer residents in their later years and the annual Senior Citizens Fair, organised by MP Suella Fernandes, was a great success, giving everyone the opportunity to find life changing support, answers and guidance within their community, while being introduced to Golden Zumba and other fun activities and hobbies. The Fair was held on Friday 17 November, 10.30am-1pm in the Sports Hall at Fareham College.

One Community’s Hayley Hamlett attended, raising awareness of our Lifeline, Wristband and Visiting Scheme services. One Community’s Visiting Scheme provides trained and DBS checked volunteers to visit socially isolated older people at home, to offer companionship and, where possible, link clients to other social or leisure activities.

Lifeline provides 24/7 emergency support via a call centre at the touch of a button (worn on the person), to enable people to live independently with peace of mind. The wristband features a unique customer code and a 24/7 call centre number to ring, should the client be found to be unwell while out and about. The call centre will summon the next of kin.

One Community News Christmas is a difficult time for many, too much to do, too many people to feed, or nothing to do and no one to share a cracker with. It’s certainly a time of reflection.

Do pop into our One Community Information Centre in Fareham Shopping Centre. Come and say hello, tell us what 2018 looks like for you. The team will make you very welcome.

To me the Christmas spirit is about being kind to your fellow man. We give presents, we share time and we wish everyone well. But this generosity if for life and not just for Christmas, with the voluntary and community sector giving week in and week out. So on behalf of all the beneficiaries, thank you.

Green Tips There are a few things we can all do to have a positive impact on the planet, to avoid waste, conserve resources and fight climate change. Here’s our monthly tip from our environmental friend:

‘tis the Season to Recycle Over Christmas the UK produces around 30% more rubbish including 74 million mince pies, the equivalent of 2 million turkeys, 300,000 tonnes of card packaging, 4,500 tonnes of tin foil, 13,000 tonnes of glass and enough wrapping paper to go round the equator nine times. A huge amount of rubbish and we haven’t even mentioned the gifts and gadgets chucked away because they are broken, old or simply not wanted. All this costs us money and a typical household spends over £500 extra in December so reducing our waste will save us money.

I hope most of the rubbish will be recycled but it would be better not to generate so much waste in the first place. You may have heard it before but one ONE COMMUNITY NETWORK: PAGE 2

way to constructively reduce waste is to REDUCE what we buy, REUSE what we can and RECYCLE the rest (if possible).

When organising the festive food and drinks, plan your menus ahead of your shopping trip, thinking about the numbers you are catering for and picking items light on packaging. If you stick to your list it will save you money.

It is likely at some point you will have some leftovers and they can be a timesaver when you can’t face preparing another meal, so make the most of them and store them correctly in your fridge or freezer.

Get creative with present ideas because homemade crafts are a lovely alternative to the usual shopbought stuff. Jams, chutneys, sloe gin and other Christmas treats are often easy to make with a little planning. Some of the ingredients can be easily foraged too. If you don’t have the confidence to make something, perhaps ask for a present which teaches you a new skill and then next year your friends and family will be amazed.

Wrapping paper is often not just made of paper. It can have plastic or even aluminium in it and because it is a mixed material we cannot recycle it, so why not reuse it? The paper from some of this year’s presents is salvageable and can simply be stored and used the following year. Last year’s Christmas cards make a great present label too. Cut the picture out and write on the reverse.

Packaging will be everywhere after Christmas and some of it could be reused. Bubble wrap, plastic containers, glass jars and chocolate boxes could all be used again.

Then when all other avenues are exhausted there comes a time when the item in question can’t be used again and rather than throwing it away, always try to recycle it first. But please be aware of the Christmas recycling traps. The following things should NOT go in your recycling bin:  Plastic chocolate boxes. The only plastic we want is plastic bottles.  Plastic tubs, pots or trays because they are a different plastic to bottles.  Polystyrene because we can’t recycle it.  Wrapping paper because it is often made from mixed paper and plastic.  Tin foil and mince pie foil cases. But they can be

recycled at your local household recycling centre.

Clothes and toys which should be given to charity.

Electrical items should be given to charity, or Freecycled or taken to your local household recycling centre, where they are dismantled and recycled.

Batteries, because they contain chemicals and valuable materials so should be recycled at participating shops.

Real Christmas trees. Cut your tree up and put it in your garden waste collection or look out for details of where you can drop it off in January.

One Community News First Hampshire Young Carers Conference Success Hampshire Young Carers Alliance (HYCA) held their first Young Carers Conference at Eastleigh Football Club on Wednesday 11 November, welcoming over 100 professionals spanning many occupations, including health, education, councils, social services, police, and voluntary sector, to raise awareness of Young Carers’ needs.

The conference kicked off with HYCA Strategic Lead Joanne Miles introducing HYCA and what they do. HYCA is a consortium of ten Young Carers projects across the county who work together to try and provide consistency for Young Carers regardless of where they live. Joanne then introduced the first group of Young Carers who have been working with Lee Culhane from Hampshire County Council over the past few months as part of the Young Carers Action Group (YCAG).

The first group spoke about what it means to be a Young Carer, and then ran some interesting audience participation activities including ‘dance breaks’ which saw all attendees up on their feet cutting some shapes! This part of the presentation represented how Young Carers are often made to do things they don’t want to do, and it went down really well with the audience. They also did an activity where they invited audience members to fill up a jar using various items that represented different areas of the Young Carers’ lives, such as free time, caring, school work, and social time. They then compared the professionals’ version of their ‘jar of life’ to theirs and spoke through how their time is divided up.

stories about their lives as Young Carers. One young person spoke about health professionals not telling her that she was entitled to claim back travel expenses when taking her cared for person to appointments. Another Young Carer spoke about their experience of bullying in school, and another about how six sessions with CAMHS is not a ‘fix’. The audience then had a chance to ask questions.

Many attendees pledged an action to improve support for Young Carers in their institution, and professionals also got a chance to meet and chat with staff from their local project. The police, the CCG and Supporting Families were among the institutions present, and they all expressed an interest in supporting HYCA and Young Carers across the county moving forward.

Daniel Phelps from the University of Winchester also presented his research findings from his analysis of HYCA and the families and young people registered on the projects across the county.

He was very happy to hear that the young peoples’ presentations highlighted the same issues as his research. Heidi Kavanagh from Applemore College, alongside Marie Shotbolt from New Forest Young Carers, also gave a presentation about the Children’s Society Schools Award and how schools can work to better support Young Carers.

The event was well received and one professional commented: “I was humbled over the courage it took for the YCs to share their experiences in the hope that it can impact on the lives of other young carers. I will take this message and be motivated to make changes back at my school.”

Busy in the Information Centre Fareham Men’s Shed had a day in the Centre on 1 December, selling tickets for their dolls house raffle, drawn later in the day in Fareham Shopping Centre.

Second Hand Books and Crafts for Sale We are also selling second hand books and crafts in the One Community Centre, so do pop in and pick up a bargain.

INFORMATION New Guidance from ACAS on Staff with Mental Health Issues ACAS has launched new guidance to help employers manage staff who are experiencing mental health

issues. The new guidance aims to help managers develop the right skills to support employees as well as to create a culture of well-being in the workplace.

It includes advice on:  spotting the signs of mental ill health  talking to a team member that may be experiencing mental ill health  supporting a team member during periods of mental ill health  helping a team member return to work.

The guidance also includes recommendations for managers about how best to have a conversation about mental health at work, including:  moving the conversation to a private space to prevent any disturbances  being open minded and being prepared for the unexpected  allowing the employee as much time as they need  thinking about potential solutions and adjourning the meeting if it’s necessary to think through what has been discussed before making a decision.

ACAS has also updated its guide on “Promoting positive mental health in the workplace” and this can be downloaded from its website: http:// www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=6065m The new guidance follows the publication of a recent survey indicating that while employers are doing more to tackle employees’ mental health issues, they would be receptive to receiving more training and guidance.

Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.”

Legislative changes affecting the Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) From The Charity Commission Published 23 November 2017 Charity Commission guidance about a phased timetable allowing charitable companies to convert to charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs).

Contents  Introduction  Charitable Company Conversion – Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)  Charitable Incorporated Organisations to be included in the Index of Business Names Introduction The Charity Commission has announced a phased timetable allowing charitable companies to convert to charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) following legislative changes in Parliament on 23 November 2017.

The new legislation also means that all charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) will be listed on the Business names index, held by Companies House.

The much anticipated Secondary Legislation under the Charities Act 2011 contains 3 distinct elements:  the Charitable Incorporated Organisations (Conversion) Regulations  the Charitable Incorporated Organisations (Consequential Amendments) Order  the Index of Company Names (Listed Bodies) (England and Wales) Order The Charity Commission (the Commission) is now preparing a programme of work to support these changes.

Charitable Company Conversion – Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) Please note this service will only begin from 1 January 2018. It will then follow the phased implementation timetable (by annual income bracket) detailed below.

Applications will not be accepted before this time.

1 January 2018—Less than £12,500 annual income 1 March 2018—Between £12,500 and £25,000 1 May 2018—Between £25,000 and £100,000 1 June 2018—Between £100,000 and £250,000 1 July 2018—Between £250,000 and £500,000 1 August 2018—Greater than £500,000

Governance Guidance The conversion process should be simple and straightforward in most cases. As part of this process, the new CIO Constitution and Special Resolution will need to be included before submission to the Commission.

The Commission will liaise with Companies House to ensure that necessary records are updated correctly. This will mean that the date of conversion of the charitable company to a CIO – as shown on the public Register of charities – will match the date of removal of the charitable company at Companies House.

To support the Commission’s handling of these arrangements, we ask you to keep separate any additional changes which your charity may wish to make (for example, a change in name or charitable objects) and make them before or after the conversion has occurred.

We will provide more information about these arrangements soon.

Charitable Incorporated Organisations to be included in the Index of Business Names All charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) will be included in the Registrars’ Business Names Index (maintained by Companies House) from 1 January 2018. Charities that are incorporated as companies already appear on this index.

All CIO names will appear alongside the names of companies (and other entities) when a user makes a search through the Companies House CHS or WebCheck service.

This will help protect CIO names. For instance in the event of others looking to set up a company or CIO with the same or similar name.

Following the change in legislation, from 1 January 2018, Companies House will need to check whether a CIO’s proposed name includes ‘sensitive words or expressions’ set out in The Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business Names (Sensitive Words and Expressions) Regulations 2014, that require the prior approval of Companies House.

Where the proposed name for the CIO includes ‘sensitive words or expressions’ applicants will need to email Companies House enquiries@companieshouse.gov.uk to obtain their non-objection before applying to the Charity Commission. Please include ‘CIO’ in the subject line of your email to Companies House.

Before applying, applicants are advised to view Companies House website guidance (Annex A).

This sets out the criteria for approval. Applicants are also advised to view Annexes B and C. Some, but not all, words require applicants to seek the view of a government department or other body before sending their email to Companies House.

This is made clear in Annex A. If the relevant body has no objection to the proposed name it will provide the applicant with a statement of non-objection.

It is important to note  these changes will mean that all new CIOs containing a “sensitive word or expression” in their name - wishing to register with the Charity Commission after 1 January 2018 - will need to attach a letter of non-objection from Companies House to their application for registration as a CIO  failure to attach this letter of non-objection will result in the application being returned as incomplete  any existing CIO applications affected by these legislative changes that were submitted to the Commission prior to 1 December 2017 will continue to be handled in the usual way.

Applicants will be contacted on an individual basis should a letter of non-objection be required  new CIO applications affected by this legislation that are submitted to the Commission on or after 1 December 2017 will need to submit a letter of non-objection from Companies House as part of their application for registration.

Failure to do so will cause delays The Commission will, of course, also check that the proposed name of the CIO is not ‘objectionable’ in one of the ways that are set out in our guidance on choosing charity names. Some of these also overlap with sensitive names requirements.

One Community Training, Workshops and Information Service Trigger Tool Training: Risk Awareness and Supporting Independence Tuesday 9 January 2018, 9.30am – 11.30am FREE training is being provided for anyone who has contact with vulnerable adults in the community through their professional, voluntary or carer role to help people to stay well, independent and safe in their own homes for as long as possible. With a focus on helping people to help themselves, this training introduces the Connect to Support website which offers information and a directory of services for Hampshire residents. The learning objectives of this training are to:  identify some of the risks that adults may have in their homes  feel more confident in talking to the person about these risks  know how to work with someone in a ‘strengthbased’ way to ensure they are able to participate fully in their community and to support their independence  know where you can get support and advice in your local area.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Awareness Workshop Tuesday 23 January 2018, 9.30am – 11.00am Does your voluntary or paid work involve handling and storing personal data?

The General Data Protection Regulation comes into effect on 25 May 2018 to protect personal and business information from being abused, misused or mismanaged. It is vital that all organisations are aware of these changes.

Potential issues discussed during this informal awareness workshop will be tailored to the requirements of the learners and may include:  basic definitions of data protection and the drivers behind the GDPR  policies and privacy notices  obtaining data and consent  storage and retention of data  access to, sharing and processing data  security – data, physical, IT, remote.

By the end of the session learners will have an understanding of what processes they need to put in place before the introduction of the GDPR, and their responsibilities from May 2018 onwards.

Safeguarding Adults and Children Thursday 1 February 2018, 9.30am – 12.30pm The aim of this course is to give learners the essential knowledge and skills required to recognise abuse and how to alert others to abuse. On successful completion of this course the learner will be qualified to:  operate within the legal boundaries with regard to safeguarding adults and children  recognise the categories of abuse  recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse  consider where abuse is likely to occur  understand who may commit abuse  report and alert the relevant authorities to abuse  understand who can make a report and how to go about it.

Moving and Assisting People Friday 23 February 2018, 9.30am – 12.30pm This course is suitable for staff and carers who move and assist people or for those who have a supervisory role in a care environment. The course helps to manage the risk of injury and ill health and reminds learners of the need to maintain dignity and to safeguard people. On successful completion of the course learners will be able to:  Operate within the legal boundaries with regard to the Manual Handling Regulations and the moving and assisting of people.  Carry out risk assessment (PEACE) and understand biomechanics.  Understand safe and unsafe moving and positioning techniques.  Carry out safe sitting to standing and assisted walking techniques.  Select, use and inspect equipment.  Understand the correct use of wheelchair, rotunda and electric stand aid.  Understand and comply with company policy and procedure.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Awareness Workshop Tuesday 7 March 2018, 9.30am – 11.00am

This one day training session will cover all aspects of First Aid at Work. At the end of the course learners will have demonstrated competence in basic life support skills and increased their awareness in managing a first aid incident in the workplace. A certificate of competence will be issued and is valid for three years.

FUNDING William Wates Memorial Trust—Supporting projects that encourage disadvantaged and vulnerable young people to keep away from anti-social behaviour and criminal activity, enabling them to fulfil their potential. This is mainly achieved by supporting charities that engage young people through the mediums of sports, arts and education. http://wwmt.org/ Henry Smith Trust—The Strengthening Communities grant programme is designed to support small charitable organisations working at grassroots level.

Through this grant programme it wants to make sure that its funding reaches the most disadvantaged areas of the UK, targeting places that are economically marginalised and affected by poverty.

The Improving Lives grant programme provides grants to charitable organisations that help people when other sources of support have failed, are inappropriate, or are simply not available. It supports established organisations delivering services directly to beneficiaries.
