One Community, in partnership with the Ashcroft Arts Centre, is holding a Volunteer Certificate Presentation, at 6.45pm on Wednesday 8 June 2016 at the Ashcroft Arts Centre, Osborn

Road, Fareham PO16 7DX. Certificates will be presented by the Mayor of Fareham to volunteers who either live or volunteer within the borough. Following the presentation, drinks and nibbles will be served.

To qualify volunteers should have given a minimum of 100 hours service or have volunteered for a year. One Community News How does the voluntary sector know it is doing a good job? Most of us continue to work with our clients week after week, adapting our services in response to need or requests for changes, and we know we are making a difference. However, the sector is often questioned on providing evidence of the outcomes of our work – this is not simple. By ensuring an older person can use a voluntary transport scheme (Dial-A-Ride or Good Neighbours) to go shopping each week, we argue, that service helps keep that person independent. But if they don’t go out, can I prove they will become frailer and need increased care? No. But when one of your service users says, “I couldn’t do without you,” you know why you do it and that you are doing a good job.

Here at One Community we are trying to become a littler greener. We have signed up to the Waste Not UK Campaign which is about reducing food waste.

There are a few things you can do to have a positive impact on the planet, and we share these with you every month. Please let us know of any you have to include.

Love the yellow stickers Every large store will have a discount section where they put produce that is about to go over its sell by date. Here you can get some great discounts on food that will be fine for a lot longer than advertised. This stops chain stores throwing away lots of produce which is perfectly fit for consumption.

Goodbye to Maureen Davis Volunteer Centre Assistant Those of you who have had dealings with the Volunteer Centre at One Community over the last six years will very likely have had contact with Volunteer Centre Assistant Maureen Davis. Maureen has left us for a “sort of” retirement, though she’s not ruling out finding something closer to home—she will certainly be keeping up with her volunteering! We wish Maureen well and thank her for her hard work and commitment over the years. Her successor will shortly be appointed.

Sainsbury’s Broadcut is looking for a charity from the Fareham area to support—nominations close on 9 May so you just have time.

Over the next couple of months Sainsbury’s stores will be making a shortlist of charities for customers to vote for as part of their Local Charity of the Year scheme.

The wining charity will then receive a year of support from the store, which includes fundraising and awareness raising. Customers vote in-store 13-26 June.

Phil Bridgewater, store manager of Sainsbury’s Broadcut, said, “There are so many fantastic charities in the local area who do brilliant work in our community. We’d love to hear from charities we haven't supported before.”

Information Foster Carers Needed for Kittens

Jan Jarvis, fostering co-ordinator at Stubbington Ark, is desperately calling for more foster carers to look after kittens.

As with most animals, this is the time of year when the feline population reproduces, and in spring the Ark faces a huge increase in the number of kittens needing to be re-homed. However, before they can go to their forever homes they have to be weaned from their mothers and cared for until they are eight weeks old. With limited resources at the cattery, the RSPCA charity relies on volunteer foster carers to work with them and care for the kitten litters until they are ready to be re-homed.

They are desperate to recruit more cat foster carers. People who are experienced cat owners, who can foster kitten litters, either with or without their mothers.

You need to have your own transport so that you can collect the kittens and bring them along to the Ark every two weeks, where their development can be monitored and relevant vaccinations and treatments given.

Everything you need will be provided: cat carrier, litter trays, bowls, litter, food, toys, beds and bedding.

Volunteers are asked to spend time with the kittens, to handle them so that they will be well socialised and ready to move into their permanent home.

Trading Standards Warning About Cold Callers Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning the public to be wary of cold callers at the door offering paintings and artwork. The cold callers are claiming they are deaf students. Reports have been received from the Fareham and Eastleigh areas, but the warning applies to all of Hampshire.

Consumers have statutory rights when buying at the door, including a 14 day right to cancel for goods over £42, the right to a refund, replacement or repair if the goods are faulty, falsely described or not fit for purpose. However, those rights can only be exercised if the seller is a trader, and if they give full and correct contact information. Trading Standards recommend residents do not buy goods at the door.

Macmillan Cancer Support Information Service Thursday 19 May, 10am-4pm, West Street, Fareham Precinct (Outside Wilkinsons) Macmillan Cancer Support’s mobile service will be visiting Fareham, with cancer information specialists on hand to answer questions and offer information.

The team encourages anyone with worries or concerns relating to cancer to stop by, whether you’re living with or beyond cancer, or are a carer or loved one of someone who is. Cancer can impact on all aspects of your life, and the mobile service team is available to provide information on issues ranging from how to deal with the side effects of treatment, what local support is available for carers, where to turn if you are struggling with your finances, and information on where to get travel insurance.

Let's take the Oops out of Poops Fareham residents are invited to pop into the Civic Offices and pick up a week's supply of dog waste bags for free as part of the Council's new initiative aimed at tackling dog waste in the borough.

Up to seven free bags can be taken at any one time.

“Let's take the Oops out of Poops” is a campaign designed to inform dog owners that don't already pick up after their pets that they are giving all dogs a bad name, as well as causing potential health hazards. Posters of Bagsy, a very cute but slightly embarrassed looking dog, have been put up across the Borough to remind people of the need to “Bag it and Bin it”. The message will also feature on some of the Council's refuse lorries.

Job Vacancy: Employment Support Officer for Volunteers SCRATCH Charity is recruiting an Employment Support Officer for volunteers. know more about the technique and Jungian theory that underpins it. The Advanced course is open to anyone who has completed the Foundation course. The Hedley Foundation The Foundation will only make grants to UK Registered Charities. It makes grants to small charities working with young people in the areas of Recreation, Sport, Training, Health and Welfare, Support and outdoor Education of young people between the ages of 11 and 25.

The Foundation is particularly keen on open air and adventure-type activities and the funding of appropriate kit and equipment. The Foundation is keen to support small charities that can demonstrate achievement in persuading and deterring at-risk young people from proceeding further down the pathway to custody.

14 May-16 July—Heads and Tales Exhibition Explore the past 2000 years of English Royalty through objects, interactives and a special Royal Bloop family trail that highlights the strange and horrible history of Kings and Queens.

The show tells key stories from each royal reign, including tales of resolution and revolution, dignity and despair. Visitors can delve deeper into their local history at this Westbury Manor Museum exhibition, through a special focus on the Tudor period, the English Civil War in the reign of Charles I and the remarkable Wriothesleys. Supporters of Henry VIII, patrons of Shakespeare, at odds with Elizabeth and friends of King Charles I, the Wriothesley family lies at rest in Titchfield Church.

Events Celebrate your 90th with a Royal Celebration!

Fareham residents who were born in the same year as HM The Queen are invited to a tea party in honour of her 90th birthday this year.

As part of The Queen's birthday celebrations, the new Mayor of Fareham for 2016/17 will be holding a special tea party on Monday 13 June for residents who will celebrate their 90th birthday in 2016.

Deputy Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Connie Hockley, who will become Mayor of Fareham on 12 May said: "If you or someone you know was born in 1926, come along and celebrate with us! It will be a pleasure to spend the afternoon together and hear some of the stories from the past nine decades. We will all have a wonderful afternoon in honour of HM The Queen's landmark birthday, and, at the same time, give our own nonagenarians a tea party to remember."

Marks and Spencer are kindly providing cakes for the event which takes place on Monday 13 June from 2.30pm at Ferneham Hall.

Need help with your hanging baskets or focus with your florals? The Fareham in Bloom team has organised a free workshop where you can learn how to perfect your own floral display and beautiful hanging baskets. There will be demonstrations, practical help and advice.

Bards Without Borders will bend all borders be they national, spiritual or literal! This night sets the record straight on how Shakespeare, really, shines a light on our very own experiences of journey, loss, joy and displacement.

Events Bursledon Brickworks Family Fun Day—Sunday 8 May A day of activities aimed at children aged 3 -90! All kinds of things to do with child focused entertainment for the day. The entry price includes the museum which will be all steamed up and the old machinery working. The trains will be running (subject to weather) and the café open.

Dementia Friendly Sunday—22 May Why not come along for a visit to the museum and enjoy a day of reminiscing. We are allowing anyone with dementia in for free … including one carer. If you thought that going to a museum was too difficult you might well be surprised at how rewarding it can be.

We are a very robust place and very little involves “no touching” signs!

Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War—30 March 20 July An exhibition that gives a maritime perspective on the First World War. It provides a unique window to an otherwise unseen and often forgotten aspect of our nation’s maritime heritage. Exhibition is included in the price of museum visit.

Safe and Sound A presentation by Trading Standards Tuesday 17 May, Stubbington Library at 6pm Each year, millions of people in the UK fall prey to a scam. Everyone is at risk. Trading Standards Officers are working hard to protect the public.

Come to a presentation on avoiding scams, dealing with nuisance phone calls and doorstep cold callers. ''We do not buy goods or services at the door'' stickers, Safe and Sound booklets and ''Buy with Confidence Directories'' will be provided after the talk.
