News from One Community Information Centre Fareham

First Aid and Christmas Wrapping!

On 30 October some of our volunteers attended a One Community Emergency First Aid course at Fareham Tesco’s Community Space. We all enjoyed it and learnt so much.

One of the biggest causes of household deaths is choking, I myself had a very close call in a restaurant some years ago. The vest I am wearing (picture above) is a simple device demonstrating the movement required to assist someone caught in this situation. We would love to raise the ÂŁ100 to buy one for the One Community Information Centre, so we could teach all our visitors.

Come and let us wrap your presents at Fareham Shopping Centre and hopefully we can raise enough. We will be wrapping in the Information Centre for most of December and out in Fareham Shopping Centre on the 19th and 20th.

One Community News The Clocks going back, leaves falling - it’s autumn and often a time when the hard work really starts. People don’t go out as much due to the weather, problems seem to be more daunting when it is raining and dark. But it is also time to take stock, think about 2019, plan what is essential and agree what really needs to be done.

Turn Over A New Leaf Event

Our turn Over a New Leaf event in Fareham Shopping Centre on 5 October was a great success, with a wide range of voluntary and community groups attending the table top event, raising awareness for their services and recruiting volunteers.

Hedgehogs usually hibernate between November and mid-March and need to have enough fat reserves to survive. Making hedgehogs homes in the garden and providing food will help them. Juvenile hedgehogs weighing less than 500 grams during late autumn will need help to survive winter.

One Community Calls Out for Votes to Bag a Share of Tesco’s Bag Fund

One Community is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. One Community is one of the groups on the shortlist in Fareham for November and December—so please support us!

Customers cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

One Community has successfully referred a number of voluntary and community groups to Tesco Bags of Help, such as the Friday Night Club. Their cheque presentation at our One Community Information Centre is pictured above. The club received a cheque for £1,000, which will pay for their hall hire. The Friday Night Club provides activities for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems.

Sadly the Friday Night Club recently fell victim to a devastating theft—see page 5.

Information Charity Devastated by Theft

has been working with the Land Trust to develop facilities at Knowle Haven to host the outdoor activities. The club had laid a track for the buggies, erected a marquee to house the archery activities during the winter and is currently fundraising to build an accessible toilet block at Knowle Haven.

This theft is a tremendous set-back. The charity estimates the cost of the theft and damage as over £10,000.

A Surprise for Caroline—”That’s My Dad!”

On the night of 25 October thieves broke into a container stealing all the outdoor equipment of Fareham’s Friday Night Club, including three off-road buggies, helmets and archery equipment.

The Friday Night Club, which began as a monthly disco at Wallington Village Hall, provides activities for people with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues. The most popular activities are the off-roading and the archery and it is difficult to see how the charity will continue in the shortterm. Members are upset as their outdoor activities are the highlight of their week.

“We are devastated by what has happened after all our hard work fundraising to buy the buggies and equipment,” said Geoff Knipe, the group’s founder and CEO, “Please keep your eyes open and if you spot anything that might look like any of our things contact the police.”

Over the last six months the Friday Night Club

It was a family reunion for Caroline Dinenage MP when she visited the Fareport Talking News stand at the 55+ Info Fest/Winter Warmth event held in the Thorngate Halls, Gosport, on Friday 19 October.

Terry Wilson, FTN Press Officer, said, “Caroline was delighted to see her father, local TV personality Fred Dinenage, patron to Fareport Talking News, on the publicity material displayed on the stand.

“Our thanks and congratulations go to Gosport Borough Council and the Older Persons Forum for all the hard work involved in staging this much valued event. It gave Fareport Talking News the opportunity to present the benefits of our service to the general public.

The first digital code of practice for charities is to launch in November to help the sector improve their tech skills and increase digital take up.

The Charity Digital Code of Practice is funded

by Lloyds Banking Group and Co-op Foundation and is managed by a sector wide group led by independent digital expert Zoe Amar.

The code will be voluntary and free to access and has been developed following a consultation involving a survey of 171 charity representatives.

This survey revealed that 60% want to increase digital skills in their charity, and 49% are already embracing digital but want to take this area of the organisation to another level.

Managing risk is a key area charities are looking for support in, cited by 36% of respondents.

Meanwhile, more than a quarter (26%) want their boards to get behind digital and 16% want more support from their leadership team to improve their charity’s digital capabilities.

Lack of investment is a barrier, with 39% saying they need more funding to progress with improving digital.

Separate versions for small and large charities The code will launch on November 15 and will feature versions for small and large charities. It will set out principles for good practice and has the backing of the government, as part of its Civil Society Strategy.

Among those to respond to the survey was Lara Burns, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Age UK. “As a sector, there is much more we can do to fully embrace the opportunities that digital technology offers and the Charity Digital Code of Practice will provide a welcome structure for this,” she said.

“It will give a helpful direction for leadership and governance, and a potential framework for collaborating across the sector and sharing learnings, whilst the resources will provide practical help for delivering programmes.”

Also responding was Clive Gardiner, the NSPCC’s Head of Digital. He said: “The Charity Digital Code of Practice will be a hugely helpful, timely and topical resource, offering a robust, constructive framework of issues, tips and checklists that organisations of all sizes can reflect upon and consider.

“Having been involved since its inception and through iterations and piloting, it’s wonderful to see it come to fruition with such flourish.

“It will support and complement perfectly the suite of digital strategy initiatives I’m leading at NSPCC this year to ensure that our digital transformation accelerates to match the pace of change in the external world.”

The code’s management group is also urging charities to discuss the code via social media, using #CharityDigitalCode.

FUNDING Action Hampshire Fund Now Open Grants of £500 - £5,000 now available in Hampshire to support organisations and groups working to address the needs of children, young people and families. The fund is targeting existing and new projects, equipment, capital costs and core organisation costs (including salaries), for projects that support disadvantaged or vulnerable families in crisis, reduce the impact of childhood poverty, help families cope with poverty and crisis and that show how funding will make a real difference to their organisation and beneficiaries. Children in Need – Small Grants Grants are for projects working with children and young people of 18 years and under experiencing disadvantages. The new programme offers grants of up to £10,000 per year for up to 3 years. The next application deadline is Midnight on the 2nd of December for a March 2019 decision.

Dementia Friends Information Session Tuesday 13 November 2018, 9.30am – 11.30am Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society led initiative which aims to increase dementia awareness and change the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about dementia.

A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended an information session and has committed to an action that will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media.

Come along to this free session to learn more about dementia, what it’s like to live with dementia and how to turn that understanding into action.

Dysphagia Training Friday 16 November 2018, 9.30am – 12.30pm Cost: Voluntary Sector: £55 Others £65 This course is aimed at health and social care workers and healthcare professionals with a responsibility to provide care or support to people who suffer from dysphagia. It will give the care worker the knowledge and understanding to recognise the different signs, symptoms and complications of dysphagia and the skills required to deal with a choking emergency and to provide ongoing after care.

Training/Events Choir’s Walking in the Air To celebrate four decades of the children’s classic book ‘The Snowman ’written by Raymond Briggs, NEW MUSIC MAKERS choir will be singing the mesmerising arrangement taken from the animated adaptation of the same name at their Christmas concerts on Saturday 8 December 2018.
