One Community Research Department - fulfilling your research needs

Previous projects What do we do?

One Community undertakes a variety of research, both on our own behalf and that of our members, and through commission.

We have been commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Hampshire for the last two years to look into specific issues that sit within the police and crime plan.

In particular we look at what is working well, what needs to be done better, and what changes can be made to make sure people are at the centre of procedures and change.

These research projects have been of mixed methods, utilising both quantitative and qualitative tools such as questionnaires, focus groups, one to one interviews, and reviews of previous academic work.

The aim of the research was to find out about the social value for all the people involved in running St Thomas’s lunch club. This club was chosen as it was thought to be a standard example of a self sustaining club. Results showed the benefits were great for attendees and volunteers alike.

Once Called, Twice Shy Assistant PCC, Robin Jarman, approached us to undertake a six week project looking into the victim experience of the police response in domestic abuse cases. In that short period we spoke with 30 victims across the county, thanks to our contacts with specialist services, and came up with reccommendations for the OPCC to consider.

Neighbourhood Watch Engagement Project Hampshire and Isle of Wight Neighbourhood Watch Association and the PCC comissioned One Community to undertake a three stage project. The first stage was a research report in which professionals, members, and the public were consulted. The second stage comprised creating a toolkit for NHW members to use to broaden engagement with hard to reach groups in their areas. The final stage was for the toolkit to be implemented alongside recommendations.

Positive Steps The first project undertaken for the PCC was to look at what provision was available for 11-19 year olds living in Hampshire who had experienced Domestic Abuse historically. This was a very sensitive topic, which needed to be approached with great care.

Our researcher met with over 30 different organisations across the county to build up an accurate picture of support available and also spoke to over 20 victims, and held 3 focus groups. The resulting report helped the PCC ascertain where there were gaps in support geographically across the county and highlighted which interventions were best suited to the needs of young people.

Eastleigh Good Neighbours Research undertaken on behalf of Eastleigh Good Neighbours comprised a survey of the voluntary group’s service users to identify the needs of the client group and to consult with them about possible additional services, outings and activities. The response rate was very high and informed Eastleigh Good Neighbour’s plans for future service provision.
