olunteering Matters provides a monthly round up of volunteering opportunities in the local area, provided by Volunteer Centre One Community. These are only a few of the many available, and we are here to help you find a role to suit you. PACT—Meet at the Gate Mentors Pact is a national charity that provides support to prisoners, people with convictions, and their families through a range of services. Meet at the Gate Mentors meet with service users, prior to their release from prison, on the day of their release, and approximately two weeks after release. They work alongside the prison and probation service supporting vulnerable adults on their release from custody. To do this role will you will need to be: non-judgemental/ non-discriminatory, approachable and friendly, flexible, reliable and punctual, organised and able to use your own initiative. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to respect confidentiality and to work as part of a team. Experience of working with vulnerable people would be helpful. Full training is provided by PACT. Pre-agreed expenses will be paid. This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Red Cross Mobility Aids Service The Red Cross mobility aids service provides valuable short-term support to vulnerable people in the UK. Mobility Aids Volunteers deal with wheelchair requests and enter details onto a database, all while providing excellent customer service. The role includes:  Issuing and receiving wheelchairs (or other mobility aids equipment)  Demonstrating how to use and look after our wheelchairs

Dealing with enquiries from people wanting to borrow a wheelchair (or other equipment)  Using a computer-based stock control system  Receiving payments / donations and issuing receipts  Giving information about other Red Cross services or other providers where appropriate The minimum commitment is 2 hours a week.

Woodland Volunteers The Observatree project aims to protect the UK’s trees, woods and forests from new pests and diseases – either arriving or spreading across the country. The earlier these are spotted, the higher the chances that outbreaks can be eliminated or controlled. Volunteers play an essential role within Observatree. They help carry out early surveys for tree pests and diseases, they complete Tree Alert reports to enable scientists to carry out a correct diagnosis, and they provide further accurate data allowing scientists to identify trends in the spread and appearance of pests and diseases. Observatree volunteers are trained annually by tree health professionals and scientists. Training enables volunteers to correctly identify signs and symptoms of Observatree’s 22 priority pests and diseases as well as carry out effective site surveys. Volunteers are also trained to collect samples; record accurate grid references; and follow good biosecurity. Volunteers gain new skills and experiences that have led to new opportunities. Surveyors involved with the project have even gone to work or study within the tree health sector.

Branch Treasurer The Parkinson’s local group is run by volunteers and offers friendship and support to people living with Parkinson's, their families and carers across Fareham. Regular activities include coffee mornings, exercise classes, singing, reflexology and other social activities.  The Branch Treasurer leads the financial activity of the group. working Volunteering Matters Page 2

closely with the Branch Chair, the role involves:  accurately recording financial activity, keeping the group and the Parkinson's UK Office informed of the group's financial position and keeping up to date on Parkinson's UK's financial policies and sharing them with the group  providing regular reports to the committee on the financial status of the group including final accounts at the annual general meeting  engaging with local staff and volunteers to meet the needs of local people affected by Parkinson's  dealing with financial administration for the group, including sending annual financial returns to the UK Office, ensuring volunteer expenses are paid accurately and working within the guidelines provided being a signatory on the group's bank accounts  working with the Volunteer Co-ordinator to enable the group to operate within Parkinson's UK's guidelines to bring forward the day when no one fears Parkinson's Previous accounting or finance experience would be helpful but not essential.

Community Centre Trustee Fareham North-West Community Centre provides a hall for the local community, the wider Fareham community and beyond. Situated close to Henry Cort School, their first remit is to provide a site for community events and clubs, but the building is also available for hire by businesses, private functions, weddings, parties, classes and group meetings. The central aim is simply to provide an available space for whatever local people need it for. A passionate community minded person is needed to join the trustees who run this valuable local resource. This is a very rewarding role for someone who enjoys making a difference to the local area.. This is a busy community hall, run by a passionate group of local people who would welcome a new member. Trustee meetings are held four times per year.


Fareham Senior Citizen Lunch Club Helper The club meets on a Monday at Holy Trinity Parish Centre, West Street, Fareham, for a home-cooked lunch. It is so popular, there is a waiting list to join. Organiser Carol Cheesmore said: ‘For some of our members it can mean that it is the only time they get out during the week. It can often be the only time they have a conversation with anybody else and they really enjoy meeting with other people and being able to talk about their interests.’ The group has around 50 members and is run by around 40 volunteers. The volunteers do everything from cooking the meal to the entertaining, to driving the members there. They are in need of some extra help with setting up chairs and tables before the club starts, and then helping to pack them away at the end. This is a reasonably physically demanding role; you will need to be able to lift tables and chairs.

Befrienders - Fareham Good Neighbours Befrienders are needed to visit lonely people across the borough of Fareham. Many people find themselves isolated and lonely, particularly if they have become housebound. Volunteers can change someone’s life simply by being there and listening. Volunteers usually visit once a week, and can visit for many months or even years. Referrals for this valuable service are on the increase so more volunteer are needed. You only need a couple of hours to spare a week to make a real difference to someone who is lonely in your area. No expenses can be paid, but most clients are nearby. The day and time of visits will be arranged to suit you. Fareham Good Neighbours is a group of volunteers who visit the lonely or infirm in the borough of Fareham. They visit people throughout the Fareham local area, but if you don’t drive a car they can usually arrange that your contact is local to you. Some of those who are visited live in residential homes, the remainder live in their own homes.

Shop Assistant— Naomi House Shop Fareham Naomi House shops are manned by a wonderful group of volunteers who give up their time to help raise funds for children supported by Naomi House

& Jack’s Place Charity. Shops are a vital source of income for the charity which supports and cares for local life limited and life threatened children, young adults and their families. They are looking for volunteers who would enjoy working in a shop, whilst helping make a difference towards a really worthwhile cause. At the Naomi House charity shop in Fareham, duties include sorting, steaming, pricing and selling goods as well as keeping the shop tidy and wellstocked. If you enjoy meeting new people, are 18 years and over, and are able to be a part of a team but also work under your own initiative, then this role could be for you.

Friends of the Rotary The Rotary Club of Whiteley comprises a group of professional people, living and/or working in and around Whiteley and Fareham, who are keen to put something back into the community and enjoy themselves at the same time. The club was formed in 2003 and consists of approximately twenty members, both men and women (about 50/50). To keep the new club dynamic and successful, they are looking for more people who will be interested and able to contribute to the activities of the club. Friends of the Rotary help at various events within the local area such as serving tea/coffee, marshalling, collections with the annual Father Christmas events and fireworks/concerts. You will need to be reasonably physically fit.

Admin at Ashcroft Arts Centre Ashcroft Arts Centre is a vibrant arts centre with its own café bar, and it offers a broad range of events and classes. The programme includes live drama, music, dance and comedy alongside films and festivals and a packed timetable of classes and workshops for dance, exercise, arts, crafts and stitching to appeal to all ages and abilities. Could you help with some office administration to assist with the smooth running of the Ashcroft Arts Centre? Join a friendly team in a pleasant environment. Roles include mailings, data cleansing and general office tasks. Free parking is available, hours can be arranged to suit you.

Information Stand Volunteer - Action on Hearing Loss Outreach Information Volunteers raise awareness and understanding of hearing loss and deafness by running information stands at a variety of venues. They provide information on hearing loss and tinnitus to deaf and hard of hearing people, their families, carers, community groups and professionals, encouraging independence and reducing feelings of isolation. This role will involve:  Setting up information stands using display boards and arranging leaflets on a table, etc.  Answering questions from visitors and handing out leaflets as appropriate  Taking details from enquirers if unable to supply the information, and following up enquiries at a later date Action on Hearing Loss is working for a world where hearing loss doesn’t limit or label people, where tinnitus is silenced and where people value and look after their hearing. This role is key to help people access the support and advice that Action on Hearing Loss can provide and to help people protect their hearing. To do this role you will need knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing people. You will need to be friendly, reliable and approachable, and have the ability to listen to questions and to answer appropriately - making a note of questions for Action on Hearing Loss staff if you are unable to answer in full.

Sue Ryder Charity Shop Volunteers Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. For over 65 years their doctors, nurses and carers have given people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can. They take the time to understand what’s important to people and give them choice and control over their care. This might be providing care for someone at the end of their life, in a hospice or at home. Or helping someone manage their grief when they’ve lost a loved one. Or providing specialist care, rehabilitation or support to someone with a neurological condition. Sue Ryder has charity shops in Fareham, Stubbington and Portchester which work to raise money for this valuable charity. They are all looking for Till Volunteers and Stock Processing Volunteers. Till Volunteers - This role involves welcoming and serving customers as well as taking payment. Full training will be given on how to use the till, payment by cash & credit cards, and gift aid receipts. You will need to be able to stand to do this role. Stock Processing Volunteers - Are you someone who enjoys looking for bargains? Do you have an eye for what will sell? Would you enjoy being part of the team looking through the stock that comes into the shop. You'll be trained on what to look for and how to prepare items for sale. This is a key role as processing items and getting them onto the shop floor is paramount. You will need to stand at the stock processing table to do this role.
