Fareham/Gosport Diabetes UK Fareham/Gosport Diabetes UK is looking for volunteers to help in a number of roles: Committee Members—to help achieve the future success of the Fareham/Gosport Diabetes UK support groups. You should be keen to help a few hours a month to plan, set up and promote the groups to local people affected by diabetes.

Committee meetings are kept to a minimum and locations vary. However the enthusiasm and the need for the groups remains a constant. Ideally you need to have some knowledge of diabetes, but this is not necessary as training will be given. Join a team who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable as well as keen to relaunch the group across the area, with your help.

Social Media Volunteer—this is a rewarding volunteering role, as you are potentially supporting many local people to understand more about their diagnosis and guiding them to a level of understanding. Diabetes affects many individuals and families and social media offers a support network which goes alongside the support groups held locally. This volunteering role can be done from home, but the volunteer will be part of the bigger team and where possible attend some events. The plan is, over a short time, to develop

an online social support network which will provide inclusion and peer support across all ages.

This would include using Facebook, Twitter and linking with the group’s own local website.

Ambassadors and Event Volunteers—support is available for everyone affected by diabetes, but making people aware of that support can be tricky.

The role of ambassadors and event volunteers is to assist with manning tables at events, and signposting people to the Facebook page and the support groups, and providing them with immediate peace of mind. Do you like meeting people and providing help? Could you commit to just a few hours a month and man a table at a local library? Events? In shopping centres etc? Support and training given and a real sense of achievement guaranteed.

Collection Box Coordinators Hope for Tomorrow is a national charity dedicated to bringing cancer treatment closer to home.

Mobile Chemotherapy Units are provided to the NHS in a unique partnership so that they can take vital chemotherapy treatment closer to the homes of cancer patients. The role of collection coordinator involves:  identifying and placing collection boxes in suitable locations.  talking to the shop owner, receptionist etc at the location about how the boxes will help Hope for Tomorrow and what the charity does  emptying boxes every 4-6 months (as they get full) and banking the income with the paying in slips provided. Giving a receipt and letter of thanks to the hosts.  keeping a written record of the location of all boxes for your Regional Fundraiser, the dates they are emptied and the dates/amounts banked.  moving boxes to a better location if they aren't collecting much. Your Regional Fundraiser may also ask you to remove boxes.  reporting any stolen boxes to Hope for Tomorrow Head Office Tetbury.  spotting the potential for further fundraising amongst the box holders for the Regional Fundraiser Volunteering Matters Page 2

All volunteers must be 18 or over. Induction to Hope for Tomorrow will be provided.

Titchfield Haven Front of House/Reserve Volunteer This public-facing role plays an important part in caring for Hampshire’s countryside and making it accessible to visitors. At Titchfield Haven, the information point and shop is a very busy place and often the first point for visitors to find out about the National Nature Reserve and the surrounding area. You will welcome visitors to the site and assist with providing customer service, care and security for the benefit of visitors and the local community. As part of the role you will spend time in the visitor centre, selling entry tickets, membership sales and shop merchandise. Outside of the centre you will patrol the reserve.

This is a varied role with a mixture of tasks which include: cash handling and event booking, patrolling the reserve to assist visitors with bird ID and checking tickets, opening up or locking the reserve, litter picking in the hides/reserve, welcoming and interacting with the public to ensure all visitors have the best possible experience.

Mystery Shopper Volunteer mystery shoppers are needed to ensure that Hampshire Library and Information Service provides a consistently high standard to customer service. Tasks and duties include visiting a group of Hampshire libraries posing as an ordinary customer and engaging with the staff based on a supplied scenario and questionnaire. You will need to provide a written evaluation of your experience.

You will have a confident attitude and good memory; good verbal and written communication skills; a full driving license and access to your own car. Attention to detail will be required to carry out the visit and complete the evaluation form.

No experience is necessary. A full induction will be given. Commitment: two days every three months. Duration: a year in the first instance.

Summer Reading Challenge The Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme provided by the Reading Agency and delivered for free throughout Hampshire's

libraries. It is designed for children aged 4-11 with the aim to keep them reading during the school holidays. You will be working with children, their parents and carers. As part of the tasks and duties, you will:  explain how to take part and register children with the scheme  talk to them about the books they have read, encouraging them to share their views and hand out reading rewards such as stickers and medals  assist with general administration and help customers by referring enquiries to relevant members of staff As a volunteer you will:  be enthusiastic about reading  possess good interpersonal skills, enabling you to talk and listen to young children in a friendly and patient way  remain calm at busy times but cope when things are quieter Training: volunteers have an induction session to complete before they start.

Commitment: the Summer Reading Challenge is an annual scheme running from mid-July to midSeptember. Days and hours required will depend on the opening hours of your local library.

Storytime / Rhymetime Volunteer Almost all Hampshire's libraries regularly hold free rhyme times aimed at the youngest library members. Many libraries also host story times for slightly older children to develop their listening skills and love of reading. As a volunteer in this role you will:  prepare the area where the session takes place and also help to choose the rhymes or stories  welcome the families of small children and babies and oversee buggy parking  by joining in, encourage parents and carers to do the same and when the session ends, you'll talk to them and promote the book stock  clear up after the session.

As a volunteer you will:  be approachable and enthusiastic  have good interpersonal skills enabling you to talk and listen to young children in a friendly and patient way Volunteers have an introductory session to ensure

that this opportunity is the right choice for them before they start volunteering on a regular basis.

Commitment: your local library will have a specific day for these activities. You're expected to attend all events at which you're assisting punctually.

Home Library Service The Home Library Service provides library material to people who are unable to make a personal visit to the local library and have no-one to do it for them. Home Library Service volunteers select and deliver material to suit the reading preferences of the customer and then also return items to the library. Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed but must be agreed in advance with library staff.

All volunteers have an induction session which includes basic manual handling techniques.

Once appointed, an identification card will be issued to the volunteer, which must be worn by the volunteer in the library and when visiting customers.

Commitment: at least one visit per month to at least 2 or up to 5 customers, with the date and time of visits to be agreed between volunteer and customers.

Engineering Volunteer – Bursledon Brickworks An engineering volunteer is needed at Bursledon Brickworks to help maintain and run the historic steam engines at the museum, as part of a team, and to talk to visitors about them. Typical tasks and duties involved in the role:  helping to clean, lubricate and generally maintain the historic steam engines at the museum  helping to steam up and run the engines on Event days and occasional other days, eg for a group visit, as necessary  talking to members of the public about the engines  helping other members of the team prepare the boiler for the annual inspection  carrying out other manual tasks around the museum as necessary for the running and development of the organisation, eg putting up signs The volunteer would need some knowledge of engines and working machinery; be able to work as part of a team. And have a commitment to safety.

Collections and Archive Volunteers Bursledon Brickworks Could you help care for and catalogue the fantastic collection of objects related to Bursledon Brickworks, brickmaking in Britain and other clay based industries, which are housed at the museum. It is a very varied collection, from chimney pots to photographs, bricks to books and spades to steam engines.

To make the collections more accessible to the public, and for research, help is needed with organising the objects, record keeping and collections care. Collections Volunteers will be supervised and supported by the Collections Manager. Typical tasks and duties involved in the role:  assisting with on-going cataloguing to help create a record of the objects on site  moving objects into storage areas and around display areas as necessary  inputting and updating object details on a computer database  housekeeping and pest monitoring to museum standards in display and storage areas  labelling artefacts with an identification number  housekeeping and the presentation of the site and museum

Community Link Fareham Fareham Community Link offers tailored programmes of activity to adults with learning disabilities; supporting and enabling people to improve their skills for independent living and encouraging community access and integration. They have premises at Bath Lane, Fareham and at Wynton Way. Admin Volunteer—Could you spare a couple of hours to help with admin? The team is able to be flexible and fit the role round the time that you have to give. Community Link is looking for support with answering the phone, photocopying, filing, PC admin, etc.

Away Day Volunteers—Away Day Volunteers make all the difference in helping build relationships within a group and enabling groups to have new, fun and fulfilling experiences. You may be looking after a small group or providing one to one support for an individual.

Baking/Cooking Group Helper—Baking and Cooking groups are held at both Community Link’s venues. Give a group a time of joy through baking and cooking; working as part of a team to produce a tasty result at the end. The role involves supporting the team to cook by working together while providing a friendly face and helping hand and observing hygiene regulations.

Lunchtime Helper—Join the small team who prepare the lunch each day—a useful daily task to engage the group. With your assistance they could be involved with peeling and preparing vegetables etc, laying the table and feeling a really valued part of the team.

Wynton Way Horticultural & Craft Helper—Our horticultural and woodwork site needs some 'crafty' people! Are you friendly? Enjoy fun times? Are you enthusiastic about helping people with a learning disability to gain new skills in all areas of horticulture?
