any of us are preoccupied with the giving of gifts at this time of year, what will suit each person on our list and can we afford it? The greatest gift we can give, which needn’t cost a penny, is our time. Giving the gift of time can make such a difference to someone who needs a bit of help, support or companionship, or to an organisation struggling to provide a much needed service or to raise vital funds.

The gift of time can bring a great deal of pleasure to the giver, too, as it always does when you are able to give someone exactly what they need. In this newsletter are just a few examples of volunteering opportunities currently available.

Stubbington & Hillhead Voluntary Drivers As it has got more and more difficult for people without personal transport to access their medical appointments, the Stubbington and Hillhead Voluntary Driver Service has become more and more busy. The service takes people to dentists, opticians and physiotherapists, as well as their hospital and surgery visits. The volunteers wait and return the client to their home. Clients make a mileage based donation, which covers the driver’s costs, so the only cost to the driver is their time. The service depends on a large number of local people willing to give a little of their spare time, by choice, for the benefit of their neighbours. If you feel you could donate a little of your spare time occasionally for this important job you will find it is much appreciated.

Volunteer Community Court Member (aged 14-25) Hampshire Constabulary is looking for young people, aged between 14-25, to assist with the operation of a Community Court to hold young people who commit offences in the community to account by deciding appropriate outcomes, as follows: 1. To become a community court youth juror, judge, usher, community/victim advocate or respondent advocate.

2. To attend and hold community court hearings as requested, involving young people in the community who have committed antisocial behaviour or low level crimes.

3. To listen to the circumstances of the offence, the views of the respondent, the victim and the community to impartially and fairly recommend an appropriate outcome. This will be based on the community court motto: Where crime hurts, justice should educate, rehabilitate and restore.

4. To help with ideas for restorative justice approaches to community problems.

5. To become a community court ambassador to the public and media and join in with community activities, peer mentoring and other community court tasks.

6. To complete initial and updated training to serve effectively in community court services.

7. To give regular and effective service.

Treasurer for Portchester Hub Portchester Hub is situated in the main shopping area in Portchester, offering many different community activities, such as: art class, preschool, toddler group, badminton, toy library, community learning, lunch club, kurling, petanque, social club, craft group, tea dance, job club, a second hand book shop and much more.

A treasurer is needed to support the book keeper and trustees. This is a very interesting role with a popular community team. Some of the role can be done from home, although there is office space available if you prefer to work onsite. Some treasurer experience would be good, but is not essential.

The group is looking for someone who is good as part of a team and has good admin skills.

Treasurer experience would be an advantage.

Help in Bereavement

Help in Bereavement was founded in 1979 as a response to the perceived needs of those suffering the grief, loneliness and social isolation caused by losing someone they love.

Help in Bereavement recognises that we are all individuals with differing needs. The charity’s visitors, many of whom have suffered bereavement themselves, are especially trained to recognise the needs of the bereaved, regardless of when the bereavement happened.

More volunteer visitors are needed to be trained to provide a confidential listening ear. No qualifications are required, but the role is subject to a DBS check. Reasonable out of pocket expenses are met by HiB.

The Rainbow Centre – Volunteering Roles The Rainbow Centre, based in Fareham, provides a specialist integrated programme of learning for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, and adults with Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s and those who have had a stroke or brain injury.

The Centre has the following volunteering roles: Admin support - is needed for the busy office.

Tasks will include answering the phone, using a computer, letter writing, filing, dealing with enquiries and counting cash donations.

Occasional event volunteers - (both inside and outside) to promote the work and services of the Rainbow Centre. You might be asked to man a stand at a shopping centre, or help set up a marketing event. This is a varied role with valuable results and a time commitment of only a few hours per month.

Fundraising Team Member - to work as part of a team in the local area to organise different events, and to increase awareness of the services available from the Rainbow Centre and the impact that more funding could have.

Rainbow Centre Charity Shop, West End Volunteers are needed to assist in the general running of the West End shop, which helps raise much needed funds for The Rainbow Centre. There are lots of different roles within the charity shop, from helping to sort donations, pricing and steaming stock, keeping the shop looking clean and tidy; as well as dressing the windows and serving customers. PCaSO Prostate Cancer Support Organisation – Volunteering Roles PCaSO Prostate Cancer Support Organisation provides support, guidance and advice to patients and their families affected by prostate cancer. The organisation has the following volunteering roles: Social media volunteer: “We need someone who knows about social media and can tell us what we should be doing, and then doing it for us! We are on Twitter @PCaSO1, but a Facebook page would be useful. The website is full of junk and links that don't work, and worryingly, some information that is now wrong.” Access to a home computer needed.

PSA Volunteer (Prostate Specific Antogens): to coordinate the charity’s programme of testing stations. These are free opportunities to offer men the drop test to see the likelihood of developing prostate cancer. This volunteer role is to look after and book stands at events across Hampshire, communicating the arrangements with the whole team including trained phlebotomists, nurses and counsellors. This role literally helps save lives with possible early diagnosis. Just a few hours a week, worked from home, engaging with venues and event organisers will provide more testing station places and increase the opportunity to flag up possible problems. Access to a home computer needed.

Secretary: The new club secretary will process membership forms, write letters and mail out brochures, fliers and newsletters. The role will also involve preparing agendas and typing minutes for the committee. You will need good computer skills; knowledge of Excel would be an advantage. You'll

need to have good people skills and be happy talking on the phone. Most of the work can be done from your own home. Meetings currently take place in Otterbourne and Waterlooville.

Committee Members: to promote this highly valuable charity at different events - fetes, shows and community centre. Volunteers with good people skills who are willing to promote the organisation, challenge the NHS (ask questions, seek out treatment options), and provide a listening ear. No gift of time is too small. There are all kinds of needs that you can provide support with, dependent on your skills and availability.

Fareham Area Active Blind (FAAB) Fareham Area Active Blind is a self-help group for the visually impaired. The group meets twice a month in the afternoon in Fareham. They plan trips, meals out, guest speakers, evening social meet ups, etc. They have a couple of current volunteering vacancies: Treasurer: someone to act as treasurer, providing support in relation to the group’s finances. A computer user who is familiar with Excel, Outlook and has at least basic knowledge of book keeping.

Secretary: someone to take minutes and help with the general administration of Fareham Area Active Blind. A computer user who is familiar with Word and Outlook. Ideally someone who has experience of note taking and producing minutes.

Age UK Charity Shop – Fareham The Age UK Shop has been in Fareham for over 15 years. The shop has many very loyal customers.

Volunteers here are long established but they would welcome some new faces to join them. The role involves preparing items for sale by ticketing, steaming and displaying them. If you'd like you can be on the till serving customers and generally making people feel welcome.

Weekend Till Volunteer – Headway Shop Fareham The Headway Charity Shop in Fareham needs a weekend volunteer to assist the manager with stock selection, and preparing goods and clothing for sale. This role includes all general shop duties and the volunteer would need to be confident with the till and cash handling.

Public Speaker for Make-A-Wish By giving talks in your community you’ll be raising awareness and spreading the word about Make-A-Wish. These talks can be the first step in building strong, long term links with community groups, schools and businesses. You’ll inform and inspire your audience by introducing Make-A-Wish and talking about the wishes they grant.

Make-A-Wish UK grants wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. A wish gives a desperately ill child and their family time away from the daily struggles of living with a serious condition. The charity is looking for friendly, positive and outgoing volunteers, with access to the Internet and confidence in using it.

Royal Victoria Country Park – Heritage Event Volunteers The Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley will be running monthly heritage events to engage the public in different elements of the Netley Military Hospital history. Event Volunteers will help to deliver a variety of different events from planning and preparation to setting up and running activities on the day. The days will be fun and informative and aim to encourage visitors to return to the park. This is a varied role and could include many different activities such as:  Setting up and clearing down the event, preparing signage and activities, moving tables and chairs etc.  Providing a welcoming atmosphere – manning the car park, meeting and greeting the visitors, directing them to activities, managing an exhibition and talking to visitors about it/asking any questions, encouraging them to take part in events.  Assisting or running an activity – supervising crafts, handing out heritage trail sheets, running stalls, cash handling.  Being aware of the health and safety of the public at an event.

Taking a record of how many people take part, handing out feedback cards/questionnaires and encouraging visitors to complete them.

Along with having great communication and interpersonal skills, volunteers should be willing to learn about the history of Netley Military Hospital.

Westbury Manor Museum, Fareham Westbury Manor Museum in Fareham needs volunteers to help with cataloguing artefacts, transferring information from paper to screen and assisting current volunteers with general museum based duties.

Volunteer Centre One Community

One Community Visiting Scheme Volunteer visitors are needed across the Borough of Fareham to visit socially isolated, mainly older people in their own homes, simply to provide a bit of company and, where appropriate and with the support of the scheme’s coordinator, to signpost clients to other services that might be of benefit. Training and support is provided, and expenses are paid. Volunteers only commit to eight visits at a time.

This role is subject to a DBS check.
