Student Volunteering Week 20-26 February If you are a student, getting involved in voluntary work can benefit you in a number of ways – apart from the buzz of making the world a slighter better place. Equipment Hire Volunteer Volunteers are needed to provide equipment to people in need within the local area; items such as wheelchairs, perch stools, walking frames and commodes. Volunteers work in pairs to ascertain client's needs and to record equipment loans. Just two hours one morning a week can provide local clients with life supporting equipment, which may not be available otherwise.

Volunteers need to be able to read and write, be confident in talking to people and answering the phone.

This opportunity is for the British Red Cross Equipment Loan Centre behind the Health Centre, Osborn Road, Fareham. A trial shift is available.

Expenses will be paid. Some light lifting is required as some of the equipment is on shelves.

The Red Cross welcome volunteers with outstanding support in the form of local training.

Volunteering Opportunities at Westbury Manor Westbury Manor Museum is going to be dramatically remodelled this year, closing on 11 February. The new-look museum will provide exciting opportunities for many more volunteers, who are being recruited now to prepare for the big re-opening in June.

Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) provides indepth induction for all it volunteers, including health and safety and operational procedures plus on-going support and refresher sessions. You’ll be part of a friendly and dedicated team with the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and pass on your own experience. Most importantly, you’ll be playing a part in keeping this very special site open.

Volunteers receive a Culture Card which entitles them to free entry to HCT venues where admission is charged and a 10% discount in all HCT cafes and shops. The museum will be open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm and Sat 10am-4pm.

Event Volunteer You will play an important part in delivering a wide variety of events and supporting the exhibitions at Westbury Manor. As an Event Volunteer you will work with the Visitor Services Assistants and Manager to market and run an interesting and exciting event programme and support the programme of local temporary exhibitions. The aim is to supplement the normal visitor offer at Westbury with an engaging range of events, exhibitions and activities designed for children, families and adults. Typical tasks and duties might include:  Marketing – creating leaflets/posters for events/exhibitions, distributing these locally, helping promote events/exhibitions on social media  Event set up and take down including site cleaning and presentation  Assisting at events on site e.g. running children’s activities, stewarding performance/re-enactment events  Providing support for exhibition set up and take down (includes some light DIY)  Providing a friendly welcome to Westbury Manor for all visitors  Serving customers and occasional till operation and money handling  Engaging with customers, answering questions and directing them accordingly Front of House Volunteer As a Front of House Volunteer you will work in the café/shop greeting visitors on arrival, ensuring high standards of presentation, serving customers and assisting with stock management. The aim is that visitors have an enjoyable and interesting visit to Westbury Manor whether it’s visiting the exhibitions and events, popping in the shop for a gift, or enjoying a relaxing cup of tea/coffee in the café. Typical tasks and duties might include:  Providing a friendly welcome to Westbury Manor for all visitors and serving customers  Till operation and money handling  Engaging with customers, answering questions and directing them accordingly  Stock management – keeping shelves well stocked, stock rotation, checking best before dates etc

 



Light cleaning duties including dusting, hoovering, surface cleaning Assisting the Visitor Services Assistants to meet the venue’s targets for retail, catering and donations Café specific tasks – basic food prep, table clearance, occasional table service

Local History Research and Digitisation Volunteer As a Digitisation Volunteer you will play an important part in ensuring the local resources archive is catalogued, updated and accessible to as many people as possible. You will work with the Visitor Services Assistants, Manager and Collections Team to index and catalogue, update and digitise the local resources archive held at Westbury Manor. The aim is to enable the widest possible access to this unique local archive by creating a flexible, searchable digital resource.

Typical tasks and duties might include:  Research to update information on key topics  Indexing and referencing information  Data entry to database  Scanning text, photos etc Museum Engagement Volunteer As a Museum Engagement Volunteer you will work with the Visitor Services Assistants, Manager and Collections Team to develop a range of activities to engage our visitors in the exhibitions and collections including, but not restricted, to guided tours, handling sessions, and specific events/ activities. Our aim is to supplement the normal visitor offer at Westbury Manor with an exciting range of options for children, families and adults that explore our collections in more detail. Typical tasks and duties might include:  Developing ideas for different ways to engage visitors in the collections including designing guided tours and handling sessions plus other events or activities  Leading guided tours of the museum and running handling sessions regularly for visitors  Providing a warm welcome and engaging with customers, answering questions and directing them accordingly  Assisting/leading on collection-specific events e.g. town trails or walking tours

OPAL Home Visitor

Age Concern Hampshire’s OPAL scheme offers the opportunity for you to help isolated older people link to activities in your community. You will arrange and attend home visits and research help available to clients. You will provide information on appropriate organisations and may accompany clients to try a new activity. The role is very flexible and works on an as and when basis and will only take a few hours each month.

No specific qualifications are needed, but experience of dealing with older people is useful and volunteers must be over 18 years old. An enhanced DBS check and references will be taken up. Full training is given, but you will need to:  Relate well to older people  Have a non-judgmental attitude  Be able to communicate effectively  Have excellent listening skills

Stubbington Community Care Volunteer Drivers If you are looking for a way to contribute to your local community, why not consider being a volunteer driver? All you need is a car and the willingness to help. Costs are covered by a mileage allowance and you choose the type of appointment you are willing to cover and the time or date you are willing to allocate. This may be of interest to someone who has a part-time job.

The group only covers medical appointments (which includes dentist, physios, etc). The volunteer driver takes the patient to their appointment, waits for them and takes them home (unlike a taxi). With fewer bus services, local journeys just to the GP’s surgery need to be covered as well as the longer journeys. You will find your help is much appreciated and you will make new friends in the community.

The group is also recruiting Befrienders, who visits the housebound or provide shout-term respite to a Carer.

School Governor Locks Heath Infant School The governors of this school represent various elements of the local community and are appointed for a four-year term of office. The governing body has a legal responsibility for the school and takes an active part in its life. The governing body has a responsibility for overseeing the ethos of the school. Governors are consulted about matters such as policies for the curriculum, behaviour and equal opportunities and for considering the overall aims of the school. The full governing body meets twice a term. Governors visit the school on a regular basis and have links with a particular class. Governors also lead and support committees, which focus on school improvement and curriculum, finance and personnel, and site and buildings. The school welcomes the support they give to both teachers and the life of the school.

They are looking for volunteers with a commitment to education and the ability to question and think strategically. Full training will be given.
