Hampshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge

Headway offers training in brain injury and the practical considerations of working with people that have a brain injury. They run sessions from 10.15am to 12.45pm—ideal for people with kids at school.

Counsellors for Moving on Group The Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme provided by the Reading Agency and delivered for free throughout Hampshire’s libraries. It is designed for children aged 4-11 with the aim to keep them reading during the school holidays.

You will be working with children, their parents and carers. As a volunteer you will:  explain how to take part and register children with the scheme.  talk to them about the books they have read, encouraging them to share their views and hand out reading rewards such as stickers and medals.  assist with general administration and help customers by referring enquiries to relevant members of staff.

Volunteers have an induction session to complete before they start.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual scheme running from mid July to mid September.

Session Support Volunteer Headway Portsmouth and SE Hants Headway works with people in the community who have experienced brain injury. Part of their therapeutic work is to run social inclusion sessions, supported by volunteers and peer mentors, where people can begin to take their place in community activities and make friends. They brand themselves as the pub without alcohol— a safe place to have fun and meet with others who understand.

Session volunteers need to be friendly and outgoing, willing to have a laugh, but also able to help people to come to term with life-changing disability and work with them to find ways to do what they want with their lives.

This is a fairly physical role, from putting out chairs and tables and serving tea and coffee to pushing wheelchairs and helping people stand up

Are you a good listener? Are you nonjudgemental? Do you have or are you studying towards a Diploma in Counselling? The Moving On Group is always interested in new volunteer counsellors wanting to join their team. You must be willing to work with young people on all issues.

As a minimum you need to be studying in the second year of your Diploma, although the group very much welcomes fully qualified counsellors.

The Moving on Group is a charity offering a counselling service to children and young people aged 11-25. They have a 94% success rate. This is partially due to their training and supervision for counsellors, which is free.

Ferneham Hall Stewards The Ferneham Hall Stewards are a group of volunteers who undertake front of house duties at each performance or function at Ferneham Hall.

Stewards form part of a team who are responsible for the safety of the public during performances.

Other duties may include selling programmes, merchandise and ice-creams and generally assisting the public.

Each team of Stewards is led by a Senior Steward who reports to the Duty Manager.

Stewards can also join in social events and monthly coffee mornings to catch up with fellow stewards and Ferneham Hall staff.

Becoming a Steward enables you to be part of the theatre and have the opportunity to meet like-minded people. But most of all, support your local theatre and ensure its continued success.

Westbury Manor Museum Fareham’s Westbury Manor has been closed during restoration work which will transform the museum into a vibrant focal point in the heart of the community. It will shortly reopen and needs more volunteers to match its enlarged facilities. As a volunteer you would play an important part in welcoming visitors to Westbury Manor and

keeping it open to the public.

Front of House Volunteer - you will work in the café/shop greeting visitors on arrival, ensuring high standards of presentation, serving customers and assisting with stock management. Typical tasks and duties might include:  till operation and money handling. Engaging with customers, answering questions and directing them accordingly.  stock management – keeping shelves well stocked, stock rotation, checking dates etc.  light cleaning duties including dusting, hoovering, surface cleaning.  assisting the Visitor Services Assistants to meet the venue targets for retail, catering and donations.  café specific – basic food prep, table clearance, occasional table service.

Event Volunteer – you will work with the Visitor Services Assistants and Manager to market and run an interesting and exciting event programme and support the programme of local temporary exhibitions.

Local History Research and Digitisation Volunteer - you will work with the Visitor Services Assistants, Manager and Collections Team to index and catalogue, update and digitise the local resources archive held at Westbury Manor. Typical tasks and duties might include:  research to update information on key topics.  indexing and referencing information.  data entry to database.  scanning text, photos etc.

Museum Engagement Volunteer – you will work with the Visitor Services Assistants, Manager and Collections Team to develop a range of activities to engage visitors in the exhibitions and collections including, but not restricted, to guided tours, handling sessions, and specific events/activities.

Fareham Community Link Fareham Community Link offers tailored programmes of activities to adults with learning disabilities, supporting and enabling people to improve their skills for independent living.

Community Link would like volunteers to assist with preparing lunch, cooking/baking sessions, horticultural and craft activities. Help with admin would also be welcome.

Receptionist, Breast Cancer Haven Wessex A Haven receptionist works front of house, greeting all visitors, staff and families and dealing with general enquiries.

You'll need to direct visitors and provide hospitality when needed. Light admin duties are part of the role, as well as answering the phone. The daily schedule for volunteers could be: 9.30-10am – housekeeping (refill therapy rooms, set up meeting rooms where appropriate).

10-10.30am – open & distribute post. Pull out files to go with GP letters to nurses and log files out 10.30am-12 noon – administration. Depending on the day of week this could include: update posters, complete GP info request letters, archive old files, input data onto central database.

12-1pm – print next day’s schedule and pull files ready for the following day. Includes input of data onto Initial Consultation Sheets 1pm onwards – cover reception lunch break, answer phones and deal with general enquiries.

Handback over to reception and then finish.

Locks Heath Communicare Coffee Shop Helper Can you help cover a morning session at the Lockswood Centre Coffee Shop, Locks Heath?

Volunteers are invited to join the existing team on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. Helpers usually work in pairs preparing and serving light refreshments. Duties include:  preparing tea/coffee/hot chocolate/bacon rolls  serving cakes/biscuits/sweets  taking money  clearing tables  washing up as required The cafe is open during the week 9.30am to 12 noon (except Wednesdays and Sundays) extended to 2pm on Saturdays to cover events at the Lockswood centre.

No catering experience required, but good people skills are needed along with a friendly personality, basic money handling/mental maths skills, and a clean, presentable appearance,.

Volunteers need to be willing to work as part of a team.

One Community Visiting Scheme Volunteers are needed across the Borough of Fareham to visit socially isolated people in their own homes to provide a bit of companionship. The time required need only be a couple of hours a week, and volunteers only commit to eight visits at a time, so the relationship is not unending. With the help of staff, visitors might be able to engage the person they are visiting with other services and activities, the idea being to relieve isolation and help people to achieve a better quality of life.

Full training is given and support provided. Mileage expenses are paid. This role is subject to a DBS check.

Special Needs Scouts Assistant th

The 17 Fareham Scout Group is looking for a volunteer to provide support to scouts who have extra support needs on a one to one basis. You will also be helping the whole team with support and getting involved with activities. These include days out, hikes, camping and weekly meetings. You will need to be physically fit and ideally experienced in working with children with additional needs.
