Help in Bereavement Open Evening Tuesday 27 June, 6.30-8.30pm Fareham Community Link 1 Bath Lane, Fareham PO16 0DJ Help in Bereavement is a registered charity, and has been helping bereaved people through very difficult times since 1979. It is a listening service and is free of charge for as long as a client needs.

The charity supports adults in Fareham, Gosport, Portsmouth and Havant areas.

The charity is always looking for new Volunteers as the demands on the service are increasing and they regularly get requests for help out of their area.

If you are a good listener, empathic, and have a little available time each week, you’d be most welcome to the Help in Bereavement Open Evening, to find out more about the organisation, the work it does, the training involved and becoming a volunteer.

Westbury Manor Museum Volunteer Recruitment Event 10am-1pm Westbury Manor, West Street, Fareham PO16 0JJ The museum has been undergoing a complete refurbishment and will re-open this summer with new exhibitions showcasing Fareham’s rich and varied heritage, a bigger café and a much enhanced shop, as well as a new programme of events for all the family. There are lots of opportunities for volunteers to help out—come along and find out more.

Citizens Advice Witness Service Project Volunteer Citizens Advice Witness Service is looking for volunteers in the Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester areas to research relevant local organisations who might be able to provide support to witnesses for onward referral. The volunteer would need to:  Make contact with organisations using a variety of methods (phone, email, in person).  Obtain/collect information about what they do, who they support and how to refer.  Produce an electronic and hardcopy file of information.  Provide Witness Service contact details and Volunteering Matters Page 2

information (where required).  Present findings at volunteer team meeting (optional).

The purpose of the project is to:  Ensure that witnesses understand the additional support they can receive from other organisations and are able to access the support they need.  Ensure witnesses are being referred/ signposted to good quality organisations with up to date information and contact details.  Help volunteers feel more confident when talking about onward support.  Increase the percentage of witnesses receiving onward referral.

Volunteers should be 18+ and have computer skills, including the ability to undertake web-based research and use internal IT systems and communication methods. A commitment of 4-6 weeks (flexible hours) is required, and agreed expenses will be paid.

Secretary—Fareham North-West Community Association Fareham North-West Community Association is looking for a home-based secretary to assist with administrative tasks, such as preparing agendas and taking minutes for just four meetings a year.

The Association provides a hall for the local community, the wider Fareham community and beyond that.

School Governor Orchard Lea Infant School The role of school governor can conjure up images of dull meetings in stuffy rooms. School governance requires work and dedication, certainly, but seeing children learn and thrive in a safe, happy school, guided by gifted and enthusiastic teachers is an inspiration and a rewarding experience. There are six meetings per year of the full governing body, but governors are also encouraged to take part in sub-committees (Pay & Personnel, Finance, Curriculum, Buildings & Safety) and to come into school to witness and support events and initiatives. They are more than happy to explain these in more detail to a potential volunteer.

Solid Wood Community Workshop Do you have an interest in painting or craft? A Portchester-based community workshop is looking for volunteers with good attention to detail who like team working. This small group of volunteers sells their upcycled/refurbished furniture from their own studio. They convert pre-used furniture into bespoke items to be proud of. Sometimes a little bit of skill and attention can create something extra special. You could be varnishing, painting, creating, upholstering and even designing if you take on this voluntary role. You will receive training on the wood working equipment and on Health & Safety. All proceeds from furniture sales are donated to charity.

Y Services Bus Driver Do you have the required license to drive a bus? Y Services, for young people in Fareham, needs a volunteer driver for their lovely new yellow double decker bus. The bus needs to be taken from A to B and back a few times a week (very short journeys).

Your role could be just to drive, or to get involved with the Y Services activities if you’d like to, returning the bus the parking area later.

Volunteering with Enable Ability Enable Ability is an established charity dedicated to the care, welfare and advancement of disabled people, operating in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. They have a number of volunteering opportunities: Volunteer Advocates for Enable Ability—Enable Ability is looking for Volunteer Advocates to work with clients who have disabilities and to advocate on their behalf. Appropriate training is provided.

An advocate acts independently of all other services to enable a vulnerable adult to let their voice be heard in situations where they need to get their view across. In this role, you would be helping them do this and also offering the support needed, as required, in a wide range of situations.

The volunteer needs to be:  able to communicate well and listen to the needs of an individual  organised and have some general life experience This is a time-flexible role, with times to be agreed upon application.

PALS Activity Volunteers with Enable Ability— Do you want to make a difference to the lives of others? Then PALS is for you. Young people need your help to take part in the activities organised by PALS, such as wheelchair basketball, arts and crafts, day trips and many more! Experience hugely valuable and varied activities each day, providing moments to treasure. Working alongside staff, you will be encouraging individuals to 'have a go'.

Volunteer and be part of a team that is making a real difference in young people's lives, helping them build self-esteem and confidence.

Volunteers should be warm hearted people who work well as part of a team and can build a good rapport with young people. You will receive one to one support and guidance.

PALS activities are organised on Sundays.

Sports Club Volunteers for Enable Ability— Children can participate in numerous sports activities available for 5 to 25-year-olds based at Charter Sports Academy, Portsmouth. These activities are offered on Friday evenings during term time.

Volunteers are needed to support and encourage young people of all abilities to participate. Working directly on a one to one basis or in small groups, the volunteer teams will be providing support as it is needed.

Cats Protection League, Fareham and Waterlooville The Cats Protection League Fareham and Waterlooville, has a number of volunteering roles to offer: Cat Fosterer—Could you take a cat into your home until a new home can be found? All expenses are paid. Your cat experience, and our support, should ensure that cats are re-homed quickly. Some cats need to be nurtured, to build their confidence, before a new home can be found. Volunteers should have experience with cats. All fosterers will be visited to assess your home, garden etc. Training is provided and all expenses are paid.

Cat Taxi—Assistance is often needed to transport cats. Most journeys are to and from the vet’s or to a new home. Every now and then you might be asked to drive to more unusual locations. Mileage is paid. Two team meeting are held each year, which volunteers are expected to attend.

Cat Protection Supporters—Do you like cats but only have a few hours a month spare? Could you tell people about Cats Protection?

The charity never puts a cat down so they are always needing to raise awareness of their work, to find cat fosterers and generate support. You would only be required to attend events four or five times a year.

Cat Protection Online Media Volunteer—This is a great role for someone who loves cats but wants a role that can be done from home. You'll need to be confident using Facebook and Twitter to promote Cats Protection, their cats, services and events. Regular updates are needed on all social media. The volunteer needs experience of all online social media and needs to be able to keep up with daily posts and updates on homing/missing cats.

The Abbeyfield Fareham Society The Abbeyfield Fareham Society is a charity that provides 'home from home' accommodation for active older people on a non-profit basis. Abbeyfield has a number of volunteering opportunities: Trustees—Abbeyfield would like to recruit new professional local residents, who would like to use their knowledge and experience to support the running of the charity as a member of the Executive Committee of Trustees. This group of volunteers has overall responsibility for the management of the Society and its assets, and for the welfare of the residents.

Maintenance Officer/Trustee—Abbeyfield is looking for a new trustee with experience in premises management and Health and Safety to take responsibility for maintenance of the building.

House Committee Members—The House Committee is a group of volunteers who work to provide additional creature comforts, entertainment and outings for the residents. They are not the Executive Committee of Trustees, which has overall responsibility for the management of the Society. Committee members’ duties include coordinating a busy events calendar with both fundraising events and social events (eg Fareham in Bloom, tea parties etc.); monitoring and evaluation to ensure that a high level of service is maintained; and interaction with the residents, housekeeper and volunteers to ensure quick detection of any problems.

House Visitors—House visitors provide Abbeyfield’s active elderly residents with a chance to mix with other people from different walks of life. House visitors provide a highly valuable service, visiting most of the residents in their rooms, offering residents the chance to chat with someone different.
