Fareham Area Active Blind (FAAB)

Wessex Cancer Charity Shop, Portchester

Fareham Area Active Blind is a self-help group for the visually impaired. The group meets twice a month in the afternoon in Fareham. They plan trips, meals out, guest speakers, evening social meet ups, etc. They have a couple of current volunteering vacancies: Treasurer: someone to act as treasurer, providing support in relation to the group’s finances. A computer user who is familiar with Excel, Outlook and has at least basic knowledge of book keeping.

Secretary: someone to take minutes and help with the general administration of Fareham Area Active Blind. A computer user who is familiar with Word and Outlook. Ideally someone who has experience of note taking and producing minutes.

Open Day: Come along to the shop, 10.30am-12 noon, on Tuesday 23 May to find out more details about volunteering there Friendly, proactive volunteers who enjoy working as part of a team are needed in the Wessex Cancer Charity Shop, Portchester. The role is a varied one and includes serving customers, operating the till, sorting stock and donations, steaming and preparing goods for sale. This is a great opportunity to up-skill, meet new people and raise awareness of the cause. The charity shop, at the centre of the community, raises vital funds and helps provide cancer care and support services to people living with cancer.

You will become part of a valued team helping to make a difference to many people affected by cancer. In return you will receive training and support. This role is very flexible and you can volunteer for as little as two hours a

week, or more if you have time. It is a rewarding role and benefits many people living with cancer and families of people affected by cancer.

Communicare Cooks and Kitchen Helpers

Fareham Library Refurbished, and newly re-opened, Fareham library has some exciting new volunteering opportunities to offer: Makery Attendant The Makery is a creative technology studio with software and equipment that allows members to create high quality projects in different medias - turning your ideas into reality. The Makery needs volunteers with a good knowledge of IT/ equipment who are able to support users with projects. During sessions, groups may need help and education on how to use each piece of equipment. The role will also involve keeping the Makery tidy and ensuring that the equipment is kept in a usable condition and that health and safety guidelines are followed.

Children's Activities Volunteer – The Library’s new Children's Area needs you. Do you like getting mucky, having fun, playing with puppets, singing, dancing and playing games? Volunteers are needed to help prepare and facilitate the library’s fun sessions.

Gardener Volunteer – Portchester Westlands Medical Centre Join a team of enthusiastic volunteers who work together to maintain the grounds around the Westlands Medical Centre in Portchester. All round gardening skills needed, plus enthusiasm, ideas and willingness to be part of a team.

Cooks and kitchen helpers are needed to help run the popular and successful lunch clubs for local senior citizens on Monday at the Sarisbury Green Community Centre and on Tuesdays at the Victory Hall Warsash. Help is needed between 9am and 1.30pm to prepare, serve and clear away for up to 30 lunch club members.

Helpers volunteer in teams on a rota basis once or twice per month subject to availability.

The club does not run on public holidays.

Duties include:  preparing vegetables  serving meals  washing up Volunteers with catering experience can assist with cooking and menu planning.

Locks Heath Communicare Coffee Shop Helper Can you help cover a morning session at the Lockswood Centre Coffee Shop, in Locks Heath?

Volunteers are invited to join the existing team on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. Helpers usually work in pairs preparing and serving light refreshments. Duties include:  preparing tea/coffee/hot chocolate/bacon rolls  serving cakes/biscuits/sweets  taking money  clearing tables  washing up as required The cafe is open during the week 9.30am to 12 noon (except Wednesdays and Sundays) extended to 2pm on Saturdays to cover events at the Lockswood Centre.

No catering experience required, but

volunteers need to have good people skills and a friendly personality. Basic money handling/mental maths skills are necessary, as is a clean, presentable appearance, and willingness to work as part of a team.

Fareport News Sound Technicians / Editors

In his introduction to the Fareport Talking News website, patron Fred Dinenage says: “Have you ever thought how difficult it must be for people who cannot read the printed word to keep in touch with local news and events? Regional TV and radio stations provide a great service but they cover a very wide area. Fareport Talking News, on the other hand, concentrates on matters of a purely local interest. The news, entertainment and information it contains is taken from the Portsmouth News, Southampton Echo and the Gosport Globe and is of immediate relevance to the blind and visually impaired in the Fareham, Whiteley, Gosport, Locks Heath, Wickham and Portchester areas.”

Fareport Talking News, one of more than five hundred talking newspapers in the UK, has recently celebrated its 21st anniversary, publishing its 1000th edition just before Christmas. Recorded weekly on a memory stick at the purpose built studio in Stubbington, it is delivered directly to members’ door by the postal service and is completely free. Fareport Talking News is a selffunding charity relying entirely on the generosity of volunteers, the public and its own fund raising events.

Fareport Talking News is an exceptional service for anyone who is unable to read the paper. Editors and sound technicians are critical to its success. These positions offer an exciting challenge to a creative mind and maybe you have the skills needed by the charity to enhance their communications with the blind and visually impaired. If you do not have any previous experience they can offer training so don’t be put off. This role involves using simple software to edit

the recordings to make them perfect for the listeners. Volunteers will ensure that recordings are clear, flow well and have no repeated sections.

Full training is given.

17th Fareham Scout Group Special Needs Support Volunteer The Scout Association is the UK's largest mixed youth organisation with more than 450,000 members in the UK and more across the world.

The Scouts’ innovative spirit and ability to make things happen plays a vital role in the development of young people everywhere and volunteering with the Scouts will give you the chance to make a big impact on the lives of young people.

The 17th Fareham Scout Group is looking for a volunteer to support scout groups and provide special needs support on a one-to-one basis. You will provide the whole team with support and be involved with activities. Activities include days out, hikes, camping and weekly meetings. You will need to be physically fit and ideally experienced in working with children with additional needs.

The scout hut is behind Holy Trinity Church Hall in Fareham. Training is available.

Kroma Promotional Volunteer—Are you artistic? Are you good at designing fliers/posters etc?

Kroma needs a few volunteers to provide up to date, clearly designed, attractive newsletters and marketing materials. The group needs creative volunteers with an awareness of the LGBT+ community. They are currently using Mailchimp. This role would ideally be done from home.

Group Facilitator—Kroma is looking for a group facilitator in Fareham. You would decide on a weekly topic of discussion, and encourage group participation by all members. This is a very rewarding role making a huge difference to many people, increasing self-esteem and helping to develop social relationships.

Groups are held for approximately 2 hours per week to offer peer support. They are a central point for social opportunities and much more. Groups are usually held in local coffee shops to encourage a relaxed atmosphere.

Facilitators must have a good awareness of LGBT+ issues and be able to maintain strict confidentiality. Each facilitator must attend three monthly meetings.

Home-Based Telephonist—Kroma offers phone support on a week day to direct callers and also for groups and events. Volunteers cover the Kroma phone number from their own home phone. The group needs volunteers with a good clear, calm phone manner who are able to take and record complex phone messages. There are usually about 1-3 calls a day. The Kroma number is diverted to the volunteer's home number. The Kroma calls are identifiable and the volunteer's own number is still usable.

Social Media Volunteer—Kroma is looking for a home based volunteer who would be willing to keep Facebook/Twitter posts active with LGBT+ news from across the globe, as well as signposting local support and events.

Researcher (Gateways to the First World War), Royal Victoria Country Park Gateways to the First World War is a centre for public engagement with the First World War centenary funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This is a research project focused on theatrical and cultural history. Volunteers will be researching plays performed in both the main Royal Victoria Military Hospital theatre (RVMH) and Red Cross hospitals’ recreation huts during WW1. It would add to our understanding of both the social side of life at RVMH and the role of theatre in the rehabilitation of patients.

Activities will include tracing playwrights using genealogy tools, and researching the development of the theatre in the main hospital and Red Cross recreation huts (WW1 and beyond), known performances at Netley (WW1 and beyond), and links through Gateway project to other WW1 plays and playwrights.

No previous experience is needed. Existing volunteers and staff can give training on research. Desirable qualities are:  An existing interest in OR previous study of history  Experience of conducting research, whether on your own family history, for study, or unrelated to history would be helpful  Ability to work in a team with site staff and volunteers  Ability to work on own and be self-motivated  Basic IT skills to scan documents and photographs, carry out desk based research and record data  Good interpersonal and communication skills  Good written skills to record research results.
