olunteering Matters features only a small selection of the current volunteering opportunities available in the Borough of Fareham. It is a widely distributed monthly publication featuring organisations who want to be noticed—they are all just waiting for you!

During August I have been out in the borough and spoken to many different people, some struggling with school holidays and child care, while others don’t know what to do with their time. I have also been linking with many groups and organisations finding ever more volunteering opportunities for you to consider. I hear these dilemmas all the time … “Where could I volunteer?” “When is the best time?” “Who could I help” “What could I do?” Well, that’s what we’re here for, to take all of those questions and point you in the right direction.

In September our thoughts turn to the last part of the year, a time that can be very trying for the older generation. The activities and services provided by voluntary groups are vital to the wellbeing of many. Just think, you could be the one person a lonely older person gets to speak to that week.

Leaders Needed nd 2 Stubbington Scout Group Volunteers are urgently needed at 2nd Stubbington Scout Group to train as Leaders. They need people in all sections from Beaver Scouts (age 6-8), Cub Scouts (8-10½) and Scouts (10½-14). They are a friendly enthusiastic Scout Group who aim to provide exciting programmes for their young Scouts. Anyone over 18 years of age can become a Leader.

You don’t need to have a scouting background – or be able to do knots! Full training is provided.

Locks Heath Communicare Trustees Needed

Locks Heath Communicare is a registered charity providing hospital and other medical transport, lunch clubs, a coffee shop and minibus transport, including shopping trips. The all-volunteer organisation is run by a small group of trustees, and the services are delivered by some 120 volunteers operating in the Western Wards area. The annual turnover is about £40,000.

Trustees The group is urgently seeking new trustees to take on various committee roles. If you are interested the chair will happily discuss with you how you might be involved.

Monday and Tuesday lunch clubs, car coordinators to take telephone bookings a couple of days per month, and car drivers to take people to hospital, doctor or dentist appointments.

Minibus drivers are also needed. The group’s bus is used Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and a few weekends and evenings too.

Helpers are also needed in the Locks Heath Centre Coffee Shop.

Gosport & Fareham Friends of the Earth Gosport & Fareham Friends of the Earth is a friendly and active group of volunteers, campaigning for a better future. The group is looking for help in specific areas of expertise to help spread the word about the work of Friends of the Earth and build support for the group’s campaigns: Graphic Designer The role involves:  Creating eye-catching materials and images that convey a strong message about the group’s work  Working with the campaign and project teams to ensure the group’s materials promote its campaigns and events  Working with the web developer to ensure that the website graphics and layout are simple, clear and powerful  Ensuring that all materials align with the Friends of the Earth brand identity Social Media Expert The role involves:  Building and maintaining a vibrant and powerful social media presence that inspires people to support Friends of the Earth  Finding and creating content that will capture people’s imagination  Working with the campaign and project teams to ensure that social media posts promote their work  Monitoring the effectiveness of social media posts to ensure they have the greatest impact possible  Reacting quickly to comments on social media to engage positively with the public Web Developer The role involves:

Who are they looking for?

Are you:  Passionate about environmental issues?  Keen to help make a difference to the environment locally, nationally and globally?  Interested in joining the group and getting involved in their activities?

If so, the group would love to have your help!

Lifeline Installers One Community is looking for volunteers to go into clients' homes to install and remove emergency lifeline equipment in Fareham and surrounding areas. An installation takes about an hour, as there is a form to fill in with the client's details, but a removal is quicker.

The coordinator will send the client's details to you, so you can arrange to go to the client's home at a mutually convenient time. Lifeline operates across a wide area, but volunteers usually work in one area that is convenient for them, although they are welcome to cover other areas if they are willing. You will need your own transport to get to people's homes, but a mileage allowance and expenses are paid.

This volunteering role could be taken on by a couple, or two friends, one filling in the form while the other installs the lifeline. But most volunteers work on their own.

The installation of a lifeline makes a huge difference to the lives of frail and vulnerable

clients, enabling them to live independently with the confidence that they can summon help quickly when necessary, by simply pressing the button worn around the neck or on the wrist.

A DBS check and references are required for this opportunity.

The Haven, Titchfield The Haven, at Titchfield, aims to improve the quality of life for people affected by breast cancer by providing personalised emotional, practical and physical support. The Haven has a range of volunteering opportunities: Receptionist – to work front of house; greeting all visitors, staff and families and dealing with general enquiries. You'll need to direct visitors and provide hospitality when needed. Light admin duties are part of the role as well as answering the phone.

Lunchtime Coordinator – to prepare and support lunchtimes at the Haven. Recipes are provided from The Haven’s own healthy cook book with guidance from a nutritionist. All ingredients are supplied. You would be assisting to bring this highly valued and much needed service to where it is most needed. Food will be prepared in a stunning, newly fitted kitchen, and lunch enjoyed in a light stylish conservatory dining room. All visitors, family and staff will enjoy the opportunity to eat and relax in this idyllic setting.

Events Support – to support all manner of events, once, twice or more times a year, such as garden parties, quiz nights, balls, carol singing and many others.

Fundraising administrator – to support the small but enthusiastic team of fundraisers in their central fundraising hub, situated in a stunning listed building in Titchfield square. Your role will involve Volunteering Matters Page 3

answering incoming calls/enquiries, filing, sorting fundraising packs including banners and buckets, writing letters, counting money and being the office support when the office in unmanned.

Fundraiser (Internship) – The Haven’s fundraising, communication and operations team is small but achieves great things. Working as part of this team, you will play a key role in enabling them to raise the money required to run their vital services. You will be given full training and experience across a range of fundraising roles including: corporate, community, events, challenge events, trusts and foundations. The internship will provide you with the fundamental skills needed to begin a career in the charity sector.

Home Start Gosport & Fareham Home-Start volunteers help families with all sorts of problems, from the everyday to the overwhelming. Problems such as:  Loneliness and isolation  Relationship difficulties  Coping with twins/triplets etc or several pre-school children  Ill health, disability or special needs  Lone parenting  First-time parenthood or new babies  Coping with bereavement  Post-natal illness  Children's behavioural issues Training is provided twice yearly over 7 sessions, one day per week, plus on-going support and supervision. Volunteers will usually visit a parent in their home once a week for a couple of hours. How they help is really down to the needs of the family. Some might need a sympathetic ear, a shoulder to cry on, someone to have a laugh with.

Others may need help keeping appointments or accessing local services and 'connecting' with their local community. Our volunteers can provide an extra pair of hands to help people cope with everyday parenting situations, or practical help with activities like playing or reading stories. Training runs for seven weeks (excluding school holidays) and courses will run periodically throughout the year.

The only real 'qualification' you need to become a Home-Start volunteer is experience of bringing up children. You will be friendly and understanding and have a practical approach to problems. You don't judge people, you accept them for what they are and then strive to support them as they try to give their children the best possible start in life. You will receive full training on one of our preparation courses, and have an enhanced level criminal records check, before being carefully matched with families where your own set of experiences and skills can help the most.

One Community Visiting Scheme The first cohort of Visiting Scheme Volunteers has begun visiting socially isolated people in the Borough of Fareham. More will be needed as the scheme grows. Could you spare an hour or two a week? Expenses paid, training provided.
