ooking for something new in your life? Volunteering is a great way to kick start your career or your social life, by trying a new activity and meeting new people. We have hundreds of volunteering roles to offer, at Volunteer Centre One Community, and those on these pages are just a few of them. You can arrange to come in for a chat with staff to discuss the volunteering opportunities that might suit you, come to one of our regular outreach sessions (see below), or visit the Volunteer Centre/One Community stand at Eastleigh Mela: Sunday 30 July—Eastleigh Mela, Leigh Road Recreation Ground, 11am-4pm shared with the other co-ordinators, so you are not volunteering every week. The service only runs Monday to Friday and all expenses are paid.

Here are two volunteering roles with Eastleigh Good Neighbours, both home-based – the organisation has no office base. The group meets five times a year, during the evening, in central Eastleigh. The friendly committee provides full support, plus social events and get-togethers.

Coordinator—The co-ordinator is the first point of contact between the client and the volunteer at Eastleigh Good Neighbours. The client will ring the answerphone service and leave a message requesting a service from EGN. This could be for a medical appointment, gardening or DIY. The client will leave the date and time of the service required, together with a contact number. Each day, the co-ordinator will take the messages from the answerphone.

Once the messages have been recorded by the co-ordinator they will match the job to a volunteer using an excel spreadsheet. This involves phoning the volunteer to confirm their availability for the task and, if they agree, recording this on the spreadsheet. The coordinator will then phone the client back to confirm the details together with the name of the volunteer.

The co-ordinator's role is undertaken at home and should take approximately 10 hours per week and will be worked on a rota basis,

Marketing Officer—Eastleigh Good Neighbours is looking for a new committee member to take responsibility for marketing. The role would be to raise awareness of the group to both potential volunteers and potential service users, through events, press releases, leaflets and posters. The volunteer would need good communication skills to market Eastleigh Good Neighbours.

Eastleigh Youth and Community Trust at the Pavilion on the Park, Eastleigh Eastleigh Youth and Community Trust is looking for volunteers to help them with an exciting history project, tracing the development of the charity and all it has been involved in since the 1960s.

The project will involve collecting stories and information from the local community and then sharing it through an exciting, month long presentation at the Pavilion on the Park to mark the charity’s 55th anniversary on 29 November.

There are so many opportunities to help with this project. It needs people who are interested in:  researching archives and records  interviewing people with stories to tell  recording stories (with video, photographs and sound)  sharing the project’s progress through local and social media  designing the final exhibition and celebration Volunteers don’t have to be experts, as an exciting part of this project is about sharing skills and learning new things together, whilst making a really important contribution to the work.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Dog lovers wanted in Southampton, Winchester & Fareham! Could you welcome a gorgeous hearing dog puppy into your home for 14-16 months? With the support of Puppy Training Instructors you would socialise them and teach them new skills and obedience.

You will learn how to train your puppy at weekly puppy classes and you’ll receive visits to your home from your trainer on a regular basis.

They’re just on the end of the phone for any puppy -related questions or concerns you may have.

The puppies must get used to a variety of everyday situations such as travelling on public transport, meeting other people and animals or settling in cafes. All of this prepares them for their later life as a working hearing dog.

This fun and sociable role is perfect for dog lovers who have a keen interest in training, and lots of spare time to give! Not only do you get to look after an adorable puppy and help it on its journey to becoming a life-changer, but you meet lots of like-minded people along the way.

Speaker—Are you confident and engaging when talking to groups of people? Could you help spread the word of Hearing Dogs?

IT Volunteers for Eastleigh Library Eastleigh Library is looking for volunteers who are able to teach individuals the basic skills required to use a computer, such as sending emails, social networking, online security/passwords, browsing online and basic knowledge of the mouse and keyboard. They are looking for people with:  Computer skills  Good communication skills  Previous volunteering experience (preferably)  Time to commit at least an hour a week

Apply for Befriender Training this October Friends of the Family If you’re considering volunteering and you’d like to work with children, then this could be the perfect training course for you. Friends of the Family is a Winchester-based charity which offers support to children and families who are going through difficulties and are in need of friendship. The charity trains volunteers to become befrienders to children aged between 5 and 13.

Following training, befrienders are carefully matched to a child whom they visit once a week for a two hour period. In addition to free training, Friends of the Family offers its volunteers regular supervision, paid travel expenses and invitations to

get-togethers where volunteers can share experiences and offer each other support and advice.

Caroline, who is a volunteer befriender with Friends of the Family said: “Go for it! It’s wonderfully rewarding, professionally organised and you will gain so much more than you give.”

If you are over the age of 23, enjoy spending time with children and you have two hours a week to spare, then please get in touch to apply for the next befriender training course which takes place on 9 and 16 October.

Eastleigh Young Carers Eastleigh Young Carers has a number of opportunities for volunteers to get involved in a service which makes a great difference to young people aged 8 to 18 who have caring responsibilities for a family member. The aim is to empower young people and provide them with positive experiences in a safe and fun environment where they are free to be themselves.

When: Term time Tuesdays – Clubs in Eastleigh. Varying times from 4:30pm. Thursdays – Club in Hedge End. 4:30pm-7pm. Extra opportunities can come up from time to time but these will mainly be weekday evenings and rarely weekends. Young Carers also runs an extensive activity programme over the school holidays, with a minimum of two trips/activities every week of the holiday. They can be scheduled for any week day and the occasional weekend. The holiday schedule is confirmed two months before the first day.

Skill Sharers – talented people who would be happy to share and teach their skills to others. This may be through a one off session or over several sessions. Whether it is an art & craft skill, sporting skill, technological knowhow or an interesting hobby, we’d love to hear from you and arrange for you to come to one of our clubs to run a session sharing your skill. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid and the costs of materials met.

Young Carers Driver – providing transport to respite clubs in the Eastleigh area. This involves collecting young carers from specific pick up points, transporting them to the activities, collecting them at the end of the club and transporting them back home.

You might also be asked to transport young carers to events and outings, if you are available.

These take place during school holidays throughout the year. You will also be invited to attend training sessions and volunteer meetings as appropriate.

Reasonable travel expenses will be paid, and volunteers must have a full, clean driving license, access to a car and relevant insurance. A DBS check will be required for this role.

Youth Workers – Fun and friendly people to help the activity workers deliver a varied activity programme. Staff offer many opportunities to young carers but with more volunteer support they could expand on the existing provision. There will be varying time slots available, so any amount of spare time you have to commit to volunteering would be gratefully accepted.

Reasonable travel expenses will be paid. A DBS check may be undertaken for this role, and being available for relevant training is essential.

Fundraiser – a passionate, outgoing person with excellent communication and organisational skills to raise much needed funds and source new free equipment for Young Carers. Someone who can both identify potential companies and organisations who may wish to donate to, or sponsor, particular activities and someone who can help to organise the odd fundraising event.

This is a flexible role when it comes to working hours and with discussion has potential, for the most part, to slot around your schedule.

Buddy Scheme Volunteers – responsible, friendly people to support young carers to access the project. There will be varying time slots available so any amount of spare time you have to commit to volunteering with Young Carers would be gratefully accepted. This role involves:  Accompanying and encouraging the young carers at clubs/trips/activities, until they are confident enough to access the project on their own.  Being a driver’s mate - providing assistance to drivers transporting young carers to clubs/trips/activities.  Accompanying staff members on the occasional home visit to meet young carers who may like the extra support from the buddy scheme.  Being available for the occasional, relevant Volunteering Matters Page 3

training and volunteer meetings.

This role requires a long term commitment, and a DBS check may be undertaken. Reasonable travel expenses paid. Being available for relevant training is essential.

Chair of Trustees Winchester Science Centre Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is an educational charity created to advance the knowledge and understanding of the public in general, and the young in particular, in science and technology. The Centre welcomes 172,000 visitors a year who interact with over 100 exhibits and experience the largest stand-alone planetarium in the UK. The Centre is seeking candidates with strong leadership skills to Chair the Board of Trustees and lead the Charity through an exciting period of expansion and change. Candidates, who need not have a science and technology background, must send in their applications by midnight on 18 August. They are looking for a chair with:  Strategic and forward looking vision in relation to the charity's objects and aims  Independence of judgement  Clear understanding of the role of non-executive directors  A clear understanding of effective governance processes  The experience and authority to command the respect and confidence of senior representatives of external bodies, Board members and the senior executive team  The ability to balance tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise  The ability to deal with conflict constructively and diplomatically  Good understanding of financial issues and of risk management  Strong skills of networking, influencing and advocacy The initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of up to two further three year terms, subject to approval by the Board.

The position of Chair is unremunerated. The time commitment may vary according to circumstances but subject to a minimum of 2 to 3 days per month, which may include occasional evening and weekend commitments.

Farm Hand for Manor Farm

Volunteer Centre

Manor Farm has many animals, including pigs, cows, sheep, chickens and rabbits for visitors to enjoy and learn about. Volunteer Farm Hands support farm staff and volunteers to look after the animals and the farmyard. A range of tasks and duties includes feeding and providing water to animals, mucking out of shelters and enclosures, dealing with enquiries from members of the public who are looking to buy an animal, and general farm yard duties.

No previous experience is needed as many of the tasks can be shown to the volunteer by existing staff and volunteers. You'll need to be confident working closely with and handling animals, enjoy working outdoors, have a basic level of fitness and good interpersonal skills.
