We wish all our readers a very happy Christmas!

Host Families for Christmas Christmas is a time to be around family and friends, but hundreds of international students across the country are likely to spend the festivities alone on a closed-down University campus. HOST arranges for volunteer hosts to invite a student from Christmas Eve until 27th December, turning an otherwise lonely Christmas into one of celebration and warmth. If you would like to invite an international student to stay for a few days at Christmas or any other time of the year, we can put you in touch with HOST.

Volunteer Helper at Youth Drop In Groundwork South and Breakout Youth are offering a new pilot service. The Energy Hub will run from Friday 3 November 2017 through to Friday 29 January 2018 @ 2pm- 5pm from Energy Youth Centre They aim to offer accessible support for 1625yr olds in a relaxed and suitable environment.

The service will offer: -

Housing support and information Money management CV writing, job applications, apprenticeships/ education/job searches– computer access Sexual health advice- condom distribution/ pregnancy tests Signposting to wider services Basic bank referrals and other welfare services Shower/washing facilities Cooking skills and facilities If you feel you could spare a couple of hours to help on an odd Friday, please get in contact for more details.

Do You Have a Spare Room Available?

Step by Step are looking for hosts who can help support a young person at risk of homelessness achieve a fresh start?

Are you someone who could develop a young person's confidence, improve their everyday life skills and support them to be more independent?

Do you enjoy the company of young people, and like taking on rewarding challenges? This role gives you a chance to make a real difference to a young persons life. Step by Step cover all costs and provide a support worker and 24 hour phone helpline to support volunteer hosts.

Lunchtime Helper Bursledon Lunch Club provide food and entertainment for about 15 elderly people who come to the club on a Wednesday from 11.00 until 2.00pm. They need someone to help serve coffee and lunch, to assist the cook if she needs it (no Volunteering Matters Page 2

skills required,) and to help clear up afterwards. In amongst all that there is time to chat to the members, some of whom do not get out and talk to anyone during most of the week. This would be a good role for someone who likes to talk, and enjoys the company of older people.

Art & Craft Organiser Velmore Art Group are looking for an enthusiastic, creative volunteer to assist in the running of this monthly arts and crafts group. If putting a smile on someone's face gives you satisfaction, this could be a role for you. The group currently consists of 6 adults with mental health or learning difficulties who come together for friendship, support, art and craft and a cup of tea on a Friday afternoon.

Drivers for Contact the Elderly Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people, through regular face to-face contact. Supported by a network of volunteers, Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people aged 75 and over, who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. For this role, you need your own car, and a little bit of time on a Sunday afternoon. You will be asked to collect between 1 and 3 elderly people from their homes one afternoon per month and take them to a host family for afternoon tea. Groups usually meet on the same Sunday each month.

Code Club Programmer Chandlers Ford Library are looking for a computer programmer who could lead the Code Club for children aged 9-11, for one hour a month after school on weekdays or Saturdays. You will need to have computer coding skills and preferably experience working with children.

Library staff can provide some support with running and organising the club. Equipment is provided, coding resources are available online.

Adult Leaders / Helpers for Scouts

Adult Helpers are needed to help organise and run Scout Association meetings for children aged 6-14. Our qualified team leaders need volunteers to help supervise fun and challenging activities for Scouts. If you enjoy spending time with young people, you like being active, and you're full of energy, we would like to hear from you. You'll need empathy with young people and an interest in games and activities. You won't need any qualifications, as full training in teamwork, scouting and management skills will be provided.

The Point provides a programme of arts activities, events and performances for all the community. It promotes dance development in the education and commercial sectors through an effective outreach programme and maintains a pool of expertise for others to draw upon. The Point are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with leafleting and stuffing envelopes. You'll be doing something very useful for a very popular arts centre. This is an ad-hoc role, only available as and when there are large mailings going out at peak times of the season. If you want to get experience in marketing, there is scope to get involved in other activities.

Nutrition and Information Signposter The Nutrition and Information Signposter offers older people an opportunity to talk informally about their diet and eating habits when they attend their GP surgery. One Community are looking for a volunteer to work with us in this role.

Could you talk to patients about their weight loss/ gain, take height and weight measurements, talk about the social issues regarding weight management like mobility, cost and ability to cook, could you signpost the elderly to other services? If so then this role could be for you. No medical knowledge is required and full support will be given. There is the opportunity to accompany patients to new social activities if you’re interested.

Friendly Happy Creative People Needed For a Community Café!

The View Community Café in Netley provides work experience for young people with learning disabilities as well as groups and sessions that benefit the local community. They aim to bring the community together and help tackle unemployment, social isolation and antisocial behaviour. They desperately need more volunteers to learn the ropes and extend the café opening hours. Do you have good communication skills and a positive attitude? Do you have any interests and hobbies that you could share with a group? You don’t need any catering experience for this role, as food hygiene training will be provided. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over.

Case Workers for SSAFA (supporting our forces and their families) SSAFA provides lifelong support for our Forces and their families. Each year they support over 90,000 people through their network of 7,500 volunteers and 850 health and social care professionals. They are committed to supporting anyone who is serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force and their families.

SSAFA are looking for friendly volunteers, with good people skills who are willing to be trained to visit potential clients . You’ll be trained to complete a report including their financial circumstances and a recommendation of the help that is needed. Volunteers will also offer assistance to the client if an obvious claim for state help is suggested.

Volunteers will need to attend a two and a half day course in London covering interviewing skills, state benefits and eligibility (expenses paid.)

Basic computing skills are essential. This as a perfect role for someone who likes to help others.

Blood Donors Blood donors are always needed to save lives, Donations can be given at flexible dates and times.

You should be in good health, aged 17+ and weigh at least 7st 12lbs (50kg). Every minute of every day someone needs blood. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) collect and issue blood from volunteers to meet hospital demand.

The NHS rely on volunteers to give up to an hour of their time freely to donate blood and give the gift of life. They particularly need blood from ethnic minority groups but all donors are very welcome.

If you already give blood and want to help even more, you may be able to give platelets at the Donor Centre next to Southampton General Hospital. Volunteers are also encouraged to join the British Bone Marrow Register and organ donor register.
