Readers for Southampton Talking Echo
Little Pixies Parent & Toddler Group
For more than 35 years Southampton Talking Echo has been providing a free audio newspaper covering local news, events and magazine articles for blind and partially sighted people, mainly within the Southampton/Eastleigh areas. They are a member of the Talking News Federation, and were one of the first Talking Newspapers to use digital technology. They are looking for volunteer readers, people who could come to the Southampton studio during the evening to record a digest of local news in the Southampton or Eastleigh areas. You will need to attend an audition to see if you can sight read a selection of articles, by speaking clearly at a moderate pace. The audition is very informal and allows plenty of time for you to become familiar with the microphone and studio. You’d be on a rota once every six weeks to attend the recording studio on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 7.30pm onwards for 2-3 hours.
Help is needed setting up and running the children’s activities, eg craft workshops, storytelling, singing and providing refreshments at Little Pixies. The group runs on a Tuesday morning 9.30am-11.30am term time only at Pavilion on the Park, Eastleigh.

Cycles4All Are you interested in cycling? Can you spare two hours a week? Do you want to give something back during your free time? Cycles4All, based at Pavilion on the Park Eastleigh, is looking for help with customer service, money handling and bike maintenance. Cycles4All has a range of cycles which are easy to ride, even if your balance, your use of your limbs, or your ability to learn new skills is challenged. They run regular inclusive cycling sessions at Pavilion on the Park, where helpful support and encouragement is offered to get people riding. The range of cycles includes tandems, hand-cycles, trikes, power-assisted cycles and wheelchair bikes. They also have two-wheel mountain bikes so parents, carers and family members can all cycle together.
Volunteer Induction Helper - West Hampshire Healthcare Services West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has an opportunity for a number of patient / service user / carer representatives to support them to welcome new employees into the organisation and ensure that patient-centred care is at the heart of all that they do. Inductions are held every two months, part of which focuses on values. Volunteers would support the induction by helping with a workshop about how the CCG maintains their values at work. By sharing your stories, you could be part of ensuring that new staff understand the importance of the core values of the organisation and that the needs of the patients, families and carers, must be at the centre of all that the CGC does. This role includes helping with small group discussions and sharing how it feels to be a carer or patient.
Part-Time Secretariat for Volunteer-Led Environmental Organisation

Environmental Protection UK is a well-respected, charity organisation that has been working to protect the environment we all live in for over 120 years. Barnardo’s works with Health Visiting Teams across eight areas in Hampshire. Each area runs a variety of community based programmes, led by a Barnardo’s Community Health Development Worker (CHDW), who is supported by a cohort of volunteers. They have different opportunities available within the ‘Hampshire Healthy Families Community Volunteer’ role:
Independent Visitor - Children's Services Young people may have a range of professionals working with them. However, it is recognised that having someone impartial to talk to and offer support can make a difference to self-esteem and engagement. The Independent Visitor Volunteer Scheme is a statutory service for children who are “looked after” by the local authority. It is for those children who would benefit from having an independent adult in their life. This scheme is voluntary for the young person, which means that they can choose to have an Independent Visitor at any time from age 8 years, up until they turn 18. The scheme is provided by volunteers who want to befriend and support a young person on a long-term basis. The offer is made in order to give young people the chance to spend time and build a relationship with an adult, who is not involved in their lives as a professional or carer and that can see them throughout their time in care. The IV volunteer will form part of a package of interventions to help the young people whilst in care, supported and supervised by a Hampshire County Council volunteer co-ordinator. Volunteers will be matched with children/young people and offer one to one support. This is likely to include meeting up face to face and supporting them to engage in positive activities. A crucial aspect will be the ability to build positive relationships which allow children and young people to feel listened to and supported and continue as long as needed.
Group and activity support - to support project staff and health visitors to deliver services and activities to children, parents and carers. You could: Help run a Ready Steady Mums group (social walking group) Promote the Five to Thrive approach to families, and help support workshops designed for new/first time parents Support the HENRY programme (Health Exercise and Nutrition for the Really Young), promoting a healthy start in a child’s life Help run health roadshows and other relevant activities provided by Healthy Families that promote healthy outcomes for children across Hampshire Child health clinic support - to support health visitors and families during clinic sessions – eg breastfeeding clinics, baby and child weigh and play clinics, etc. You will be expected to: Support the health visiting teams to create a welcoming, friendly and safe environment for families Set up and help run safe play activities Help to ensure Health and Safety requirements for the sessions are met Actively promote key public health messages (resources and appropriate training given where required) Peer befrienders - to support parents, carers and families in the community who may find it daunting to access health services, groups and activities in their local community. For example, you may meet someone outside a toddler group, clinic etc, and go into the activity/group with them. This role will enable the family to access community groups. Would I be right for the service? Volunteering with Barnardo's is a great way to help vulnerable children and support families. Volunteers help to extend and enrich the charity’s work by bringing a diversity of skills, experience, community knowledge and service opportunities. In return, volunteers have the opportunity to enhance their existing skills and gain new experiences. Do you have: A desire to volunteer with children and adults Good listening skills with an empathetic approach Patience and strong relationship-building skills? Are you: Willing to take direction from project staff and health visitors A people person who can be open and encouraging Non-judgemental and flexible in your approach Willing to volunteer a minimum of one 3-hour session per week Able to travel around your local area and willing to help others access different services within their community, often by public transport Willing to provide an online summary of what you have done each time you volunteer (this usually requires access to a computer or smartphone) Happy to provide satisfactory references and for Barnardo’s to complete a DBS check before you start your role? With the support of the Volunteer Coordinator you will be guided through the first few weeks by completing a full Barnardo’s volunteer induction, and then receive on-going support throughout your time as a volunteer. You will receive: Full volunteer training: including Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity, and Professional Boundaries Access to additional training via Barnardo’s Volunteer Academy Regular supervision and support from the Volunteer Coordinator Support from the Hampshire Healthy Families team whilst you are volunteering Barnardo’s will reimburse reasonable expenses (travel costs, parking, etc) on a regular basis.
