Volunteering matters june 2016

June 2016 1-12 June 2016 is national Volunteers’ Week, providing the opportunity to celebrate volunteers and volunteering, and to say thank you to those who transform our communities by the time, effort and skills they give freely for the benefit of others.

If you want to get involved, there is no better time. Give us a call, drop us an email, arrange to meet up with our staff at a time convenient to you, or come to our Volunteer Drop-In at Eastleigh Museum on Tuesday 14 June, 10am-12 noon (2nd Tuesday of every month).

During Volunteers’ Week you can visit our Volunteer Fair at Eastleigh Museum, Saturday 4 June, 10am-2pm, and talk to local organisations about the volunteering opportunities they offer. Organisations represented will include Friends of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Eastleigh Good Neighbours, Eastleigh Fun Days, Eastleigh Museum, CIS’ters, 4 Youth, Canadian Pacific Preservation Project, North Baddesley Youth Cub, Hexagon Centre, Eastleigh Disability Forum, Oxfam Charity Shop, Community Transport, and Volunteer Centre One Community (with information about a huge range of volunteering opportunities).

Helpers for Eastleigh’s Royal Street Party Helpers are needed for the Royal Street Party on the 4 June in Eastleigh High Street. This will involve serving food which will all be in lunch boxes. Five volunteers are needed from 11am to 4pm.

Car Park Marshals for Eastleigh Fun Days An Eastleigh charity is in need of volunteers for their Under Fives Fun Days to act as parking attendants. The Fun Days will run from 10am-2pm on Botley Recreation Ground, on Monday 13 June, and on The Pavilion on the Park, Eastleigh, on Friday 24 June.

Eastleigh Fun Days Group is a small charity which organises and runs free Fun Days for children under five years of age (accompanied by their parents or carers) in the Borough of Eastleigh every summer term.

The request for help is the result of increased popularity of the Fun Days which last year saw over 400 people attending. Without extra volunteers to act as parking attendants the fun days will not take place.

Connect to Support Hampshire New Online Directory Connect to Support Hampshire will be an online information and advice guide and directory of local services for adults with care and support needs. It will provide a one stop shop for adults in Hampshire looking for information, community support and care options.

Project leaders are looking for volunteers to help them shape and test the Connect to Support Hampshire site. They are interested in feedback on the functionality and user experience of the site from a range of perspectives.

Eastleigh Library Code Club Eastleigh Library is starting a code club to help 9-11 year olds develop their confidence with entry level coding – initially on Scratch, and then maybe moving on to Python. The ‘terms’ run in 12 week blocks, preferably matching with school terms. The time commitment is one hour per week (3.45-4.45pm on a Tuesday afternoon) + prep time. This is coaching children in a club, not delivering the lesson to the whole group at once.

Volunteers should be 18+. No formal IT qualifications are required, but reasonable IT competency is a must.

Prior experience with ‘Scratch’ desirable (free online) or at least the ability to go through the modules self-taught in advance, in order to help with confidence.

Trustee/Chair for 4Youth 4Youth is looking for an individual from within the wider Hampshire community who shares their commitment to young people and has the skills and experience necessary to help achieve the best possible outcomes for as many young people as possible. As a volunteer Director for 4Youth you can expect the organisation to welcome you to a friendly and dedicated team, ensure you have a clear role and understand your responsibilities, provide you with access to the information you will need in order to carry out your role and, where appropriate, provide opportunities for you to further develop your own skills and knowledge in relation to this role. Board Members must be aged 18 or over and cannot be disqualified from holding the position of Charity Trustee or Company Director.

Eastleigh Community Games, 18 June Volunteers are needed to help at the Eastleigh Community Games on Saturday 18 June, 12 noon to 4pm. The Community Games is a community engagement event delivered by a team of local exGames Maker volunteers for the last few years.

The event was inspired by the 2012 London Olympics as a way of encouraging local communities to become more physically active and also to become more involved through volunteering.

The free event provides more than 20 taster activities to the local community to encourage them to get more active within their communities.

It aims to be totally inclusive and support anyone with any disability, long-term illness or life-limiting illness to take part. In the past taster activities have included sports such as Wheelchair Rugby, Boccia and Volleyball, recreational activities such as Cycling and Baton Twirling, and leisure activities such as Art and Craft.

The taster activities are delivered by local clubs who want to increase awareness of their activities and encourage more people to participate. People who try an activity that they would like to participate in regularly will be signposted to local clubs that they can join. As well as taster activities there’s a programme of events including an opening ceremony with performances from local groups and clubs and fete-style stalls.

The event has a number of attractions to encourage families to attend and participate including a smoothie-bike and climbing wall.

During the event the volunteers will

encourage people to take part by using a passport card system; participants will get a stamp on their passport card for each activity they try and are rewarded with a certificate after completing six or more activities.





Barnardo’s Miss U Service Volunteer Barnardo's Miss U service completes return interviews with children/young people who have been reported missing. The aim is to prevent future missing episodes and will sometimes require short term 'keep safe' work.

The role involves:  Working with children and young people on a one-to-one or group basis, using a variety of interventions, to identify needs and to achieve positive outcomes.  Undertaking return home interviews after an episode of being missing; identifying the push and pull factors around their missing episode and identify concerns in relation to CSE.  Undertaking assessment of young person's needs through the effective use of the SERAF/PRAT risk assessment framework and guidance.  Co-delivering individual programmes and group work to address issues of personal awareness, social and life skills, power and control, abusive relationships, sexual health, exploitation, grooming and risk.  Maintaining positive and meaningful relationships with children and young people at risk of or abused through sexual exploitation  Actively encourage the participation of children and young people in the design, delivery, monitoring and review of planned work packages, working at the pace of the individual child or young person.  Working in partnership with different agencies and professional networks.  Attending multi-agency meetings for children and young people who have gone missing or assessed as at risk of CSE.  Accessing different agencies, completing referrals and engaging young people in alternative support services.  Advocating children and young people's

views and wishes.

Providing training to multi-agency professionals working with vulnerable children and young people across Hampshire.

Providing advice and assistance to other agencies, professionals and community groups.

Barnardo’s Trafficking Service Volunteer This is a service for young people under the age of 18 who have been trafficked into the UK from abroad (or up to the age of 24 if they have been in care) who need help with keeping safe, dealing with relationships and issues affecting their lives.

Young people can talk to volunteers and staff about staying safe, and trafficking issues such as debt bondage, power and control. They can receive information to access services such as housing, benefits, education etc, and be provided with support and advocacy in accessing these services if required.

Child trafficking is child abuse. Children are recruited, moved or transported and then exploited, forced to work or sold. They are often subject to multiple forms of exploitation.

Many children are trafficked into the UK from abroad, but children can also be trafficked from one part of the UK to another, for sexual exploitation, benefit fraud, forced marriage, domestic servitude such as cleaning, childcare, cooking, forced labour in factories or agriculture, criminal activity such as pickpocketing, begging, transporting drugs, working on cannabis farms, selling pirated DVDs, and bag theft.

Office Volunteer Prince’s Trust The Prince’s Trust office in Southampton needs a volunteer to help things to run smoothly. The role will include maintaining client/volunteer records (electronic and paper), communicating with young people, filing, data entry, producing letters, helping with newsletters and mailings. There may also be the opportunity to get involved with other areas of work, including supporting with events.

Disability Challengers – Play or Youth Scheme Volunteer The role of Play and Youth volunteers is to support the leaders, staff and other volunteers operating the schemes. The organisation looks for friendly and enthusiastic people who want to support the children and young people on the scheme, to enable them to have a fun filled and enjoyable day. The role might include:  Being part of the Challengers play and youth team that provides a high quality, safe, fun and friendly play and leisure service for children aged 3-12 and young people aged 13-25.  Supporting the scheme Leader, Deputy and other staff in all aspects of care and supervision of children and young people who attend Challengers – encouraging and supporting children to fully realise their abilities and providing a safe and happy play environment.  Being a team member, supporting others volunteering and working on the scheme.  Helping the team keep venues and sites clean, tidy and secure, and supporting the team to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act (information available from Challengers).  Attending training sessions and meetings that are needed to carry out the role.  Reporting any concern about a child’s welfare or safety in accordance with Challengers Child Protection Policy and Procedure.  Conducting yourself and representing the charity in a manner which reflects all the values and principles of The Challengers Approach.

Do you like working with children? Do you want to help encourage them to read over the summer? Eastleigh Libraries need volunteers during the school summer holidays to listen to children talking about the stories they have read. You will help them fill in a registration card, which you will keep in a file, and give them stickers, a certificate and a medal. The children are aged 4 to 11 years old. You can come in for as little or as often as you like. Volunteers must be 15 or over. The scheme runs from 11 July to 13 September.

Helpers for Local Revitalise Charity Shops Friendly, observant and patient volunteers are needed to help at the Revitalise charity shops in Bursledon, Hedge End and West End. Other skills are learned on the job, including till use and basic health and safety. A handy person, maintenance support volunteer is also needed to undertake light DIY tasks across the shops.

The shops raise funds for the charity that has been providing short breaks for disabled people and carers at accessible centres in the UK since 1963.
