Volunteering matters june 2018

June 2018 June 1-7 is Volunteers’ Week, a chance to acknowledge the amazing contribution made by volunteers and to say a resounding THANK YOU! It also a great time to get involved in volunteering if you aren’t already. You can also browse our volunteering opportunities on the do-it website: www.do-it.org You will receive day to day support from the library and on-going monthly keep in touch meetings will be held by VIVID to discuss any learners you have seen and offer overall support.

Volunteers are wanted for the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge at libraries across the borough, from mid July to mid September. Volunteers will be talking to children about the books that they’ve read, inputting data and awarding certificates on completion of the challenge.

Young people aged 14-18 are invited to volunteer for the Summer Reading Challenge (Youth).

Volunteer Centre Outreach

Digital Mentors Could you help people to develop their online skills by showing them how to send and receive emails, use a search engine, browse the web and complete online forms safely?

Vivid housing association is looking for digital mentors to help people who need that little bit of extra support either using a computer in the library or being shown how to use their own device that they might bring along to a session.

You don’t need to be technical genius. As long as you’re patient, good at explaining instructions and comfortable working with people from all walks of life.

All sessions will take place at Eastleigh library at present and Vivid offers travel expenses and an induction at the beginning of the placement.

 

Twyford Waterworks Twyford Waterworks Trust (The Trust) is a registered charity set up to preserve and to manage the Edwardian buildings, machinery and grounds that comprised the original water processing station (the Waterworks). All the management, planning, restoration, maintenance and visitor facilities are entirely run by volunteers, and the Trust does not employ any paid staff directly (although some project work is outsourced). Volunteers are therefore at the heart of all the work carried out by the Trust, and absolutely crucial to the organisation, in turn giving the Waterworks its unique friendly atmosphere.

The range of activities offered to volunteers includes: steam or diesel engineering; boilers; carpentry; site or building maintenance; office administration; customer service; painting and decorating; horticultural maintenance; track laying; running machinery; help with selling admission tickets; preparing and serving food in the tea room – there is room for you in any of these and many other capacities.

One Community Day Centres Volunteers are needed to assist with the general running of One Community Day Centres, particularly Laburnum House in Hedge End, Rodbard House in Bursledon, Maunsell House in Eastleigh and Hillside in Chandlers Ford. The Day Centres, which are open on different days through the week between 10am and 3pm, provide the opportunity for members to get out and socialise while giving their carers a break. Volunteers help with the general running of the Centres, with the various activities, setting up the room, making tea and coffee, washing up and chatting to clients. The Day Centres are looking for volunteers over the age of 16 who are patient, caring and have empathy with older people. A sense of humour is essential, along with the ability to focus on the needs of the members.

Co-ordinator Eastleigh Good Neighbours A co-ordinator is needed by Eastleigh Good Neighbours to match requests for help (transport or gardening) with available volunteers. The role is undertaken from home, as requests are picked up remotely from the group’s answerphone. All Volunteering Matters Page 2

expenses are covered and full training and support are provided by the friendly team – all volunteers.

Co-ordinators take the role up in turns – usually a week at a time. You’ll need good telephone skills and the ability to record activities on a computer system.

Clearing Himalayan Balsam from Monks Brook Can you spare some time to help protect a local waterway that is a rich wildlife habitat?

TCV (The Conservation Volunteers charity) is working with local community groups, council staff and volunteers to tackle an invasive plant, Himalayan Balsam, on the Monk’s Brook, which runs through Chandler's Ford, Fleming Park and alongside Stoneham Lane.

They’d love volunteers to help at various locations on 14, 21 and 28 June and 5 July.

Theatre Royal Winchester The Theatre Royal Winchester welcomes Front of House volunteers to make audiences feel welcome and comfortable, and ensure they leave with a smile on their face. You don’t have to commit to a lot of time (unless you want to!).

They are also currently looking for a volunteer Painter/Decorator to join the maintenance team two days a week. This volunteer position is ideal for anyone who has DIY or painting knowledge.

Blue Cross Short Term Foster Carer for Pets Become a volunteer short term foster carer for pets at Blue Cross and help improve the welfare of the animals in their care. As a volunteer foster carer you will look after needy animals in your own home while they are recuperating from operations or illness, or young kittens or puppies until they are able to find a permanent new home.

Mottisfont Abbey National Trust property Mottisfont Abbey has a number of volunteering roles on offer, such as House Guides (weekends only), Gardeners, and Café Helpers, plus the following: Family Activities Volunteer: Friendly, engaging volunteers to support family activities during the school holiday and on some weekends.

Historic Interiors Recorder: The House Conservation Team enhances the public's enjoyment of the National Trust's properties by ensuring they are presented in the best possible way. This role involves working with the house team to record the interiors at Mottisfont.

Car Parking Assistant: Help is needed with car parking at peak times. Shifts to be agreed with the volunteer manager. No experience necessary. You will learn on the job with the help of the staff team.

Visitor Reception Assistant (weekends only): This role involves making everyone welcome, answering questions about Mottisfont and the Trust as a whole. Helping if people ask, and thinking about the best routes around the property, especially for disabled people and families. Finding out what’s on offer at Mottisfont and other local sites, so you can promote The Trust, and encourage people to join. Keeping in touch with the wider team, so you know what’s happening each day. Getting to know the processes for enrolling new members, like direct debit or card payments, and setting up subscriptions. Keeping the reception area inviting, up to date and a hub of activity. Getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures.

Befriending Volunteer – Hampshire Hospitals As a volunteer befriender your role will be to provide social companionship to patients who have a chronic or life limiting illness and are lonely and isolated. You will be visiting the patients in their own homes. In building a trusting relationship you can help to restore emotional well-being, confidence and feelings of self-worth. Regular social companionship can often help. Travel expenses are paid and full training is offered.

Regular support and supervision meetings are provided.

Support4SEND Support4SEND is a free and confidential service provided by Hampshire County Council offering impartial information, advice and support on issues relating to a child's or young person’s special educational needs or disability. They work with parent carers, and with children and young people from 0 to 25, in Hampshire. They have a number of

volunteering roles: Administrator: In this role you would be:  the first point of access for parents and young people when they telephone the service  carry out telephone surveys to obtain feedback on S4S work done and work on collating other questionnaires relating to feedback  prepare materials for events  support with the SEND information day  post information onto the Support4SEND Facebook page  administration of Independent Parental Supporter paperwork  update records of cases on the database  other tasks to support the S4S Administrator Champion: This role would involve:  giving talks and presentations on Support4SEND to groups, schools and colleges  distributing leaflets at schools and colleges and meeting with SEND staff  networking with local agencies and professionals  helping with organising events Independent Parental Supporter: Could you help support a parent in a meeting with educational professionals? Or can you see yourself visiting a parent at home to help them to write their views about their child's educational needs? Your role as an independent Parental Supporter would help the parent to put across their views, help take notes to remind them of what was said and really help the parent to feel confident that their child is getting appropriate support.

Independent Young person Supporter: Could you help support a young person in meeting with educational professionals? Your role as an Independent Young Person Supporter would help them to put across their views, help take notes to remind them of what was said and really help the young person to feel confident that they are getting appropriate support. Parents and young people really appreciate the support that an IYPS gives. This is an interesting and rewarding role and you can choose to do as little or as much as you would like. The role involves supporting young people to be confident in their views, helping a young person to find out information about SEND, Volunteering Matters Page 3

supporting a young person to understand their options for education and training, accompanying a young person to visits and meetings, helping a young person to understand information that they are given and helping make telephone calls or write letters / complete forms.

Telephone Adviser: Could you help support parents and young people who contact the service? As a Telephone Advisor you would be providing information and advice about special educational needs and disabilities. Main tasks:  make a follow up call to parent or young people who have contacted the service  give parents general information about special educational needs and disability related to education  refer parent and young people to S4S staff when more specialist advice is needed  update records on the database Volunteer Co-ordinator: This is a new role which will help Support4SEND to expand its service in supporting parents and young people. The main tasks will be to:  promote the volunteer roles within the service via online resources and printed material  be the first point of contact for potential volunteers and assist in all aspects of volunteer recruitment  ensure that recruitment checks are undertaken/followed up  attend events to promote volunteering for Support4SEND  arrange volunteer training and induction  ongoing support for volunteers

Don't let Eastleigh go to Waste!

Volunteers are needed to help welcome new arrivals to two new housing developments in the Eastleigh area and to encourage them to adopt good recycling habits that keep Eastleigh clean. Hampshire County Council is running a pilot to test how home visits to new residents impacts recycling rates in the county and is looking for a small number of brilliant volunteers for the project, which would only take up a few hours of your time.

Are you knowledgeable about the Eastleigh area, willing to spend up to four hours visiting new developments and enjoy creating positive in-person connections? Are you well-informed or willing to learn a little bit about recycling and contamination (no expert knowledge on this topic is required!)? If so, this is a really exciting opportunity for you that has the potential to shape how the council encourages better recycling behaviours across the county.

You would need to:  Complete a short training session  Be available for up to four hours in mid-late June to visit new housing developments  Spend 15 minutes with each house you visit, welcoming them to the neighbourhood and explaining what makes good recycling behaviours in Eastleigh  Be able to travel to developments near Burlesdon and Fair Oak Join us and help keep Eastleigh and Hampshire clean and green!
