Corporate Volunteering Tasks

Following a successful Business Meets the Community event in February, organised by Rotary Club of Eastleigh, One Community, Eastleigh Borough Council and the Eastleigh BID, we now have an updated directory of corporate volunteering tasks, ranging from helping to create a community garden to painting a charity shop.

If you work for a company who would like to release its employees for a time to undertake a community project, please get in touch for a copy of the directory. Group projects are good for team bonding and staff morale, and give local charities a huge boost.

Eastleigh Museum

Volunteer Centre Drop-Ins



There are vacancies for three volunteers at Eastleigh Museum, one on a Tuesday morning, 9.30am till 1pm; one Wednesday afternoon 12.45pm until 4pm, and one on alternate Saturdays 9.30am until 2pm.

One Community volunteers provide a warm welcome to visitors, and information about exhibits. Duties include serving light refreshments in the small cafe and selling items in the shop.

The museum is a hub of community life, preserving Eastleigh's heritage and putting people in touch with local services, activities and events.



Volunteers needed for Eastleigh Good Neighbours Co-ordinators are urgently needed to match clients with Good Neighbour volunteers.

The co-ordinator is the first point of contact between the client and the volunteers. Once the client has requested a service from Eastleigh Good Neighbours, the co-ordinator will match the job to a volunteer. The co-ordinator's role is undertaken at home and would only take up the time you feel you can give, when you want to, and will be worked on a rota basis, shared with the other coordinators. All expenses will be paid. The service runs Monday to Friday.

Can You Spare 2 Hours a Week to Befriend a Child?

Friends of the Family is looking for volunteers who can spare two hours a week to befriend a child in need of support and friendship. The charity’s 5s to 13s Project was established in 2009 to provide trained volunteer befrienders to children and families across the Winchester district who may be isolated, vulnerable or facing challenging situations.

The next training course takes place over two days in May and will equip volunteers with the necessary skills to become a befriender. Following training, volunteers are carefully matched to a child whom they visit once a week for a two hour period. Volunteering takes place either after school or at the weekend. Applicants for the course must be aged 23 and over, be kind, nonjudgemental and enjoy spending time with children. In addition to the initial training course, volunteers receive regular supervision, paid travel expenses, opportunities for further training and invitations to volunteer get-togethers.

Volunteer befriender, Claire, said: “Friends of the Family is a fantastic charity making a real difference to children and their family’s lives. They are incredibly supportive. The training and the ongoing support really is superb.”

Nutritional Signposter A local GP practice is running a 6-month pilot scheme in their surgery, where older people will be offered an opportunity to talk informally about their diet and eating habits when they attend the surgery.

One Community is looking for a volunteer to work with us in this new role. Could you talk to patients about their weight loss/gain, take height and weight measurements, talk about the social issues regarding weight management like mobility, cost and ability to cook? Could you signpost the elderly to other services? If so then this role could be for you. No medical knowledge required, full support given, opportunity to accompany patients to new social activities if interested.

Volunteer Evening Receptionists—Relate Would you like to help Relate to make a positive difference to the lives of local couples and families while gaining useful experience?

The Relate Centre in Eastleigh House, Upper Market Street, Eastleigh is seeking friendly and discreet volunteers to meet and greet clients arriving for counselling.

The commitment required is once or twice per month on weekday evenings. No experience necessary as training is given.

Receptionists are also required in the Southampton area.

Sensory Play Helper—Eastleigh Sensory play helpers are needed at Pavilion on the Park in Eastleigh in their Sensory space. The role involves supervising children and adults with disabilities to engage with the fun and interactive sensory equipment. No experience is needed as full training is given.

This role is on an as and when basis. When a session is booked, the worker will ring around the volunteers to see who is available, so the commitment is very flexible.

Mencap—Volunteer Sidekick Would you like to help people with a learning disability to make friends, become more social and have fun?

Mencap is looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to become Volunteer Sidekicks in Eastleigh, and support people with a learning disability to enjoy their hobbies and interests.

You will be matched to a person Mencap supports and will get to know them alongside Mencap staff. The activities you do together will depend on both of your interests but could include going out for a coffee or enjoying a pint, swimming, football, visiting museums or the cinema.

We hope that as a Volunteer Sidekick you will help make a difference to someone's life by helping them to enjoy their passion more often, as well as providing companionship and fun. To be a Volunteer Sidekick you need to be:  Over 18 years of age  Friendly and approachable  Good at communicating and listening  Able to volunteer for 4-8 hours per month This is a flexible volunteering opportunity, where the hours are agreed by you and the person Mencap supports. However, they do ask for a commitment of at least 6 months.

Please note, Mencap will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check for all successful applicants.

As a Mencap Volunteer you have the opportunity to develop your personal skills and experience. You will also get the chance to volunteer within a supportive team and be part of a comprehensive induction and training process.

Hampshire Home Library Service The Hampshire Home Library Service provides library material to people who are unable to make a personal visit to the local library and have no-one to do it for them. At least once a month, volunteers select and

deliver material to suit the reading preferences of the customer and then also return items to the library.

Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential and a personal interest in reading is recommended. The role includes some lifting and carrying of library material. Volunteers using their car will need to have a valid driving licence and appropriate insurance. Any reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed but must be agreed in advance with library staff. All applicants must be aged 18 or over.

All volunteers have an induction session which includes basic manual handling techniques.

The role requires a DBS check which can be completed online. Two references are also required. Once appointed, a head and shoulders photograph will be required so that an identification card can be issued and worn by the volunteer in the library and when visiting customers.

Commitment: At least one visit per month to at least two or up to five customers.

Days and hours: Date and time of visits to be agreed between volunteer and customers.

Blackbird Café Helpers Volunteers are needed to help in the Blackbird Café in the Nightingale Annexe, a very attractive addition to the Pavilion on the Park in Eastleigh with views over acres of parkland. Tasks include food preparation, customer service and till work. There is always a member of staff on duty and full training is provided.

This role offers a great opportunity to develop catering skills and gain experience in a working café.

The café is open Monday to Friday 9am3pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Volunteers are asked to start half an hour before the shift and finish half an hour after the café closes, though volunteers don't have to stay all day. Work experience students of 14+ are welcome.

Fleming House, Eastleigh

Fleming House, a residential and nursing home for older people in Eastleigh, has a number of volunteering roles to offer, all aimed at making life more interesting and enjoyable for the residents. Timings are very flexible as the home is open seven days a week.

Garden Maintenance – Fleming House has a courtyard garden, where the residents can sit or stroll, or look out onto from their bedrooms. While contractors do the heavy work, there is a need for someone to take a regular interest in keeping the garden up together, trimming back, weeding and maybe introducing some new planting. Tools are provided. Having the garden looking nice makes a big difference to the residents’ enjoyment of it.

Nail Bar – Fleming House has just fitted out a small room to create a very attractive nail bar, where residents can go and have a manicure, a hand massage and have their nails painted in their choice from a wide array of nail polishes. Volunteers, maybe with some training as a beautician, are needed to come along and provide these pampering sessions at times to suit the volunteer.

Fleming Arms Pub – Fleming House has its own traditional-style pub within the home, which is very popular with residents and their visitors. It is currently open 5-7pm on a Thursday. Volunteers are needed to serve drinks, on a donation basis, and to keep the bar area tidy. If more volunteers are recruited, then the pub could open at other times.

Tea & Talk – Volunteers are needed to come into Fleming House and take cups of tea round for the residents and to sit down and have a bit of a chat with them.

Fundraising – Volunteers who have any ideas for raising funds would be very welcome. All monies raised from cake sales and other events go into the Amenities Fund which helps to fund equipment, craft items, activities, Christmas gifts for residents and occasional treats, such as a fish and chip supper or curry night.
