ummer is on the way—you can tell by the number of event volunteering opportunities we have to offer! There are plenty of other opportunities too—those listed here in this newsletter are just a drop in the ocean. Can You Put up a Gazebo?

One Community staff, usually two at a time, attend many events throughout the year with the One Community gazebo. We are looking for a volunteer who can help us to put up the gazebo (we have the skills but need an extra pair of hands), and take it down later. Travel expenses paid. The next such event is the Fryern Funtasia on Bank Holiday Monday – 7 May. We need someone at 10am for 15-20 minutes and then again at 4.30pm.

After that there is the Eastleigh Mela on 22 July. If you can help we’d love to hear from you.

One Community Day Centre Volunteers Volunteers are needed at One Community Day Centres: Maunsell House in Eastleigh on a Monday, Hillside in Chandlers Ford on a Wednesday and Friday, and Rodbard House in Bursledon on a Thursday. The times are between 10am and 3pm but are flexible to meet the volunteers’ availability.

Volunteers help with the general running of Centres, which provide a service for frail older people. This involves helping with activities, setting up the room, making tea and coffee, serving lunches, washing up and chatting to the clients.

Each Day Centre aims to provide an enjoyable and stimulating day for those attending.

Guest speakers and entertainers visit the centres and some time is spent in fundraising to finance special events and outings on occasions throughout the year.

The Day Centres are looking for volunteers over the age of 16 who are patient, caring and

have an empathy with older people. You will need to be willing to learn and to work within One Community guidelines. A sense of humour is essential along with the ability to focus on the needs of the members.

Winchester Hat Fair

Join the team and help the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts come to life!

Hat Fair Festival 2018 is coming to Winchester city centre from 29 June to 1 July and the organisers are looking for volunteers to get involved with this year’s event.

Volunteers are vital members of the team, working on key areas of the festival including: event set-up, artist liaison, fundraising, social media and more.

You'll receive training from theatre professionals, gain really useful experience, plus get to see amazing outdoor performances and be part of one of the UK's most respected festivals!

The programme this year features performances from around Europe as well as home -grown artists, all performing in the nooks, crannies and streets of Winchester city centre from car parks to cathedral grounds.

Volunteers are wanted for the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge at libraries across the borough, from mid July to mid September. Volunteers will be talking to children about the books that they’ve read, inputting data and awarding certificates on completion of the challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme provided by the Reading Agency and delivered for free throughout Hampshire’s Volunteering Matters Page 2

libraries. It is designed for children aged 4-11 with the aim to keep them reading during the school holidays.

You will:  be working with children, their parents and carers.  explain how to take part and register children with the scheme.  talk to them about the books they have read, encouraging them to share their views and hand out reading rewards such as stickers and medals.  assist with general administration and help customers by referring enquiries to relevant members of staff.

Volunteers have an induction session to complete before they start.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual scheme running from mid July to mid September.

Days and hours required will depend on the opening hours of your local library.

Fair Oak Carnival Volunteers are needed for the 2018 Fair Oak Carnival, which will take place on 30 June 2018.

Organisers are calling for local residents to come forward and help on the day. Volunteer roles will include marshalling, helping to set up the arena and judging.

Volunteer Drivers Needed for Eastleigh Good Neighbours Eastleigh Good Neighbours is a local charity and is looking for volunteers with access to a car to join its team of volunteer drivers, who provide transport to people in Eastleigh town who are unable to get out and about.

You may be able to spare only an hour here and there but all help is welcomed.

Volunteers help with shopping and collecting prescriptions, taking clients to the doctor, hospital appointments or the dentist, or to visit friends and relatives in residential homes or hospital.

The Co-ordinator liaises with the volunteer to do a task - if you are unable to do it you only have to say so! Passengers pay a contribution towards their journey in an envelope provided for the purpose, and volunteers are paid

a set mileage rate of 45-50p per mile from the group's central funds.

Free Befriender Training Course in June Friends of the Family is recruiting now for new volunteers who would like to start befriending a local child this summer. The charity’s 5s to 13s Befriending Service will be running its next twoday training course, taking place in Winchester, in June. Men and women, over the age of 23, who enjoy spending time with children and would like to make a positive difference to a child’s life are encouraged to apply.

The two-day training course will equip volunteers with all the skills and knowledge needed to befriend a child who is facing difficult and challenging circumstances. Befrienders offer support and friendship to the child and the child’s family for two hours a week, for a period of 12 months.

In addition to the initial training course, volunteers receive paid travel expenses, on-going training opportunities, weekly supervision and the chance to meet other volunteers at regular gettogethers.

Sam Hunt, 5s to 13s Befriending Manager, said: “The summer months are the perfect time to start volunteering as there are so many activities that befrienders can enjoy with the child they are supporting. Whether it’s taking the child to their local park, playing a game indoors, helping with homework or being a listening ear, befrienders can have a huge impact on the child’s life. I’d encourage anyone who is considering volunteering to contact us to find out more about this rewarding role and our forthcoming training course.”

Hampshire Conservation Volunteers Hampshire Conservation volunteers are out most weekends, working on a wide variety of sites in Hampshire which are valuable for wildlife and public access to it.

In the spring and summer their tasks often involve the construction or maintenance of paths, boardwalks and fences, while autumn is traditionally the time for maintenance of ponds and water meadows. Autumn and winter months

see the management of woodlands, heathland and downland by coppicing, hedgelaying and scrubbashing, usually with a roaring bonfire.

The majority of the work is for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Butterfly Conservation, Hampshire County Council, local councils and various charities. HCV works for a few private owners who are dedicated to looking after sites for their nature conservation value.

New volunteers are always welcome and no previous experience is required. Before work starts, training is given in the safe use of tools and any potential hazards are explained. Experienced volunteers will explain and demonstrate work techniques.

HCV will do their best to arrange transport for you if required.

You can go along and give it a try before deciding to join as a member.

CLIC Sargent Charity Shop The Clic Sargent Charity Shop in Eastleigh is looking for volunteers to help raise money for children and young people whose lives are affected by cancer. A variety of opportunities includes working the till, keeping the store presentable for customers, helping with the preparation of donated stock and/or steaming.

Hours are flexible, anything from one morning or afternoon Monday – Saturday depending on your availability and the needs of the business.

Volunteers are particularly needed on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the moment.

Join the Team at Bursledon Windmill Hampshire Cultural Trust is recruiting volunteers for the following roles at Bursledon Windmill:  Trainee millers  Tour Guides  Learning assistants  Digital volunteers  Gardeners You’ll be part of a friendly and dedicated team playing a part in the mill’s history, keeping this very special site open. Volunteers also receive two free admission tickets for every three month period worked and are eligible for special concessionary rates to events. Full training is given.

Volunteers Needed for The Point & The Berry

For further information The Point Theatre in Eastleigh and The Berry Theatre in Hedge End are currently calling on all local people passionate about the arts to apply to volunteer at these venues.

The Point is particularly on the lookout for volunteer ushers to work at a series of exciting summer events including outdoor arts festival Eastleigh Unwrapped (see below), as well as professional shows across the season. Duties are varied and wide-ranging, including handing out programmes, assisting audience members and providing correct show information. The role is flexible and ushers will often be able to usher at the shows of their choice.

Becoming an usher at The Point and The Berry Theatre is a great opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of a successful professional venue, and volunteers will be able to meet some of the country’s leading visiting companies. This role is perfect for people passionate about the arts, as well as those looking to forge a career in the industry.

Ushers must be 16 and over and be confident dealing with members of the public.

Volunteers for Eastleigh Unwrapped Eastleigh Unwrapped 2018 will be on Saturday 23 June.

There will be around 10 shows/acts mainly on the park area of Eastleigh, and The Point will need people to steward each show, and act as a information point for visitors and audiences.

In the past the event has attracted over 3000 visitors.

Volunteers, who should be enthusiastic, active and good with people, need to be available from 10am on the day, possibly until 4pm. Refreshments and light food will be provided
